Here's a great tip I found while browsing online. If you're having trouble with the reader, It is most likely because you swiped the same finger the same way all 10 times. Here's what I did.
1 - I only use my thumb print to unlock. Either thumb.
2 - For the first profile, I use my left thumb and swipe each time in slightly different directions as if I would normally unlock it. I even do one where I'd have to open it while someone else is holding the phone.
3 - I do the same for the right thumb with the second profile.
4 - I do another one just to make sure i have all the angles.
5 - Should work much better.
Remember get all the angles you think you're gonna use!
It's also good to re-capture your prints after a weeks use with the phone. Now you got that muscle memory

I used my right thumb for Fingerprints 1, 2, and 3. I got every angle I could imagine, and rotated my thumb slightly a few times. One finger scanned 30 times works way better than three fingers scanned ten times each!

I think each fingerprint actually gives you ability to store 2 fingers. So I did thumbs and index fingers (index finger is much easier when it is laying flat on a table in front of you) and swiped at angles like you suggest. Seems pretty good and I think the update even improved it - no hard evidence, just seems improved.
One more suggestion - do one fingerprint swiping up. Works great and I find it a bit easier one handed.

u can scan one finger 20 times in one imprint... when it gets done with the first 10 it ask if u want to scan the same finger again, that adds to the original scan...
I'll give it a try... I was so frustrated with the fingerprint scanner I even removed the option and started using the pattern lock.

I scan my left tbumb in every direction possible, and different angle, so now it works as good as iphone scanner

I completely agree with op and other posters. My fingerprint unlock is working flawlessly. I did 20 scans each on both thumbs and my right index and all 3 are working.
Make sure you scan each side, literally turn your hand like your giving someone a handshake and do a few scans on the sides. Same for the other side of each finger and the tips as well.
Most importantly if you're using your thumb is to scan the fingerprint sideways from different angles several times. Scan it straight up and down, then at a 90 degree angle 45 degree angle and any angles in between. Do each one a couple times, in particular make sure you're doing it the way that you'll actually be doing it when your unlocking the phone. Hold your phone like you would when you going to unlock it and scan it that way several times. Best of luck hopefully this works well for everyone wanting to use it without any headaches.

I have no issues with my fingerprint scanner but I came from the s5, which I think was a bit more finicky. I had to swipe multiple times and use a glas.tr to keep the button flush. The note 4 reads my thumb every time and I'm very happy with it.
My "tip" for you guys would be to literally use the tip of your finger. If I place my thumb lower as to cover the whole button like it says, it never works. If I just use the very tip of my finger it works perfect every time.
This is awesome! Got mine set up last night and am enjoying this simple security very much! Wish it could be set up to be always on so you can open with the screen off just like the mic for Google Now!

My index finger never fails also. My thumb fails more often now that I have a case on the phone. I'm going to retrain it.

I just thought that I would pass along my experience with the fingerprint scanner. When I first started using the Note 4, I went through the fingerprint setup for my right thumb. I did the 10 times scan, and then, as the setup describes, did 10 more times with the thumb almost at a right angle. The phone stored the fingerprint and everything was OK.
As I used the fingerprint to unlock the phone, I almost always had to scan it several times. Sometimes it took 4 or 5 tries to get it to unlock.
On a whim, I deleted that fingerprint and started all over. This time I did the straight down 10 times, but did not do the additional "angle" scan 10 times and stored the print.
Now I am able to unlock the phone on the first try about 95% of the time. It never takes more than 2 tries to unlock. Yes, I have to scan my thumb straight down, but I think that is a small price to pay to get away from the frustration of having to scan a bunch of times to unlock.
As an aside, I am using the fingerprint scan for apps such as LastPass and they are now a pleasure to use with a scan match on the first try.

Wow. This is actually true I hated the finger print first time. But now I can actually use it with out frustrating. I wish my finger could be in a bit of an angle but if it is it brings that annoying inconsistent.

you mean three different angles of the same finger? or you do different angels of the same finger like 10 swipes of different angle, and so on....?
different angles same finger. I tried to trip it up, total of 60 swipes for all 3 finger prints

The scanner works fine for me. But my wife still cant get hers to work. She is frustrated and keep bugging me.

Only had one finger print scaned. Perfectly scans my finger never had to do more than one swipe. Been using it for a week now.
Index fingers=pretty good
Thumbs=terrible
For me anyway.
Works well for me. Unlocks first try with thumb and index finger pretty much 95% of the time. Very impressed. Works far better than my dads IPhone 5 does for him.

My wife is still having trouble with this finger scanning. I even have to hold her finger and help her do this exercise. Then today it doesnt work anymore. I notice her finger skin is peeling.
You notice it will not work after you wash your hand and dry it? It has to be super dry.

Yep, that is the key! The only failures get now are if I swipe too fast, too slow or don't swipe over the entire key! It's really a lot more accurate than people give it credit for if you swipe it correctly! I can unlock with both my index finger and my thumb.
As winter has dragged on (dry in the upper Midwest) this has gotten much worse for me. Especially if I'm outside in the cold, the scanner almost never works. I think the dry skin is causing it to trip up. I need to re-register my fingers all the time to have a chance.
Just wondering what people thought of the fingerprint scanner? I tried it today and I feel like it works ok. Sometimes it gets it first try and other times its hit or miss. Still though, privacy is important. Only thing I wish is that you didn't have to swipe your finger to get it to unlock. Considering the size of the phone I wish you could just place it down anywhere on the home button and have it work.

At first I thought it was pointless, because it worked poorly for me. Now it reads every time. I'm not sure why the 2nd time took better. I know you can improve the chances by taking several (up to 6 I think) profiles of your finger. I use it with LastPass, which I love, that's good integration. I don't like it for locking the screen, I'm in my phone too much and it's just a slower operation. I agree, the sensor on the iPhone is way better, you don't even think about it. But I like having it for the password management.
I use it because foxfi requires a passcode more than just swipe. I use that. Works pretty good for me. Most times on first try
I absolutely use mine everyday. I think it's overlooked because of the bad rep that the s5 scanner had, this one is much improved. I agree that the iphone scanner is better but this one isn't bad at all granted you understand how to properly set it up. I wish you could lock individual apps with it but other than that I love it.

Just wondering do you know how to reset it and start over. I want it to be able to read my left and right thumbs at different angles. The first time I did it I just used the same up down motion.

Settings>finger scanner>fingerprint manager, once in you can add or delete fingerprints, just delete them all and set up as you wish.
I used it, until I noticed that I had a bunch of really thin vertical scratches on the button. Haven't used it since. Now I'm using the pattern for my lock screen.
I must have really abrasive fingers or something.

i flashed a tmobile rom on DE, forgot to clear FP scanner. Now i am back to stock, i can't set it up or enable it.i get an error. so i'm doing the connect the dot unlock; i kinda like it cause its fast and i can use both hands.
I like the security of the finger print scanner. I tried removing it and using the the swipe to unlock feature, but found myself constantly using the finger print scanner out of habit so I just activated the feature again lol
I couldn't live without this feature now that I have it set up. This plus private mode have completely changed the way I manage my content and privacy. I love it.
i've honestly tried the fingerprint scanner so many times, and i always end up turning it off because it's frustrating and rarely reads my finger print.
Any tips?

Nope. Its one of like 47 useless (for me) features on my Note 4. It's simply, here's what I want: large screen that also looks awesome, removable battery, memory card slot, and lastly root. That's it, and I would possibly be even will to give up one, MAYBE two of those things. The Nexus 6 has one of the 4. The Note 4 has 3 of the 4, thus here I am, patiently waiting for root of the d.e. to get back in stock.

Have tried it on my note 4 and my previous S5. Maybe im just to lazy to take the time to get used to it, but in the short time ive used it the thing just infuriates me. sometimes requiring several swipes to unlock. I do like apples approach to the scanner better. Huawei has a phone with one like apples but on the back. i think its the perfect solution. the whole Swipe part of it is what sucks. The whole thing will be a moot point for me when lollipop hits the note 4 as I will simply make my Gear S a trusted device and not have a code at all as long as it is paired. I really only need security in case i lose my phone or it gets stolen. Until then I'll just stick to the pattern unlock.
I like to swipe my thumb sideways because it's easier to do with one hand. This worked well when the phone was naked, but my seidio case lifts my thumb as I slide it and makes an unreadable scan most times. I've stopped using it as a result.

Is the scanner only useful for logging in to the phone? The scanner on my HP laptop came with software to store passwords and enter them on Web sites and other places. That is how I'd like to use it.

Logging into the phone is the main use of it but you can also link it with PayPal to make purchases. Also I believe you can use it with last pass which is a password manager to log into different websites by scanning your finger.

Found an app on play store that let's you lock individual apps with your fingerprint. It's called finger security (by Rick clephas) it's quite robust and handy. Thought I'd share my find.
First, I have searched for this but came up with only instructions and tips on how to set it up, not my particular question (but it may be how I'm asking it!!). My question is whether anyone knows why the finger print scanner would accept my prints quickly and easily (meaning I don't have reason to think the scanner is faulty), but not work on my wife's at all. I'd like her to be able to easily unlock my 6P in the case of an emergency but it will only record her 1st print, then fault out on all subsequent attempts - on either index finger. It seems to accept any of my fingers, but none of hers. Can the scanner be slightly defective so only more prominent ridges are picked up (I'm talking waaay over my head here, just throwing out questions).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You might be hitting the finger print limit. I thought you could only store 6 prints.

Thanks, but it won't think it will let you do more than 5 and lets you delete them if you wish. I didn't want to completely delete mine but I made sure there was at least 3 available.

Thanks, but we thought of that, too. Had her try without washing her hands 1st, then after washing, then after wiping with alcohol - no luck!
I scanned both of my index fingers without problem. Sounds like you had no issues either... Any chance she's pressing her finger too hard? Not hard enough? Possibly she's scanning a portion of her finger and its not overlapping when she scans the next (no clue if this is a thing)? Maybe overlapping too much? I'm assuming y'all have tried repeatedly.... Just trying to brain storm
For some reason, I just can't unlock my phone with my left thumbprint. It works perfectly with my right one. I've removed and re-added my left fingerprint several times. Sometimes up to 3 copies of it. Regardless of what I do, it will not unlock with the left one.

Did you try another finger?
Maybe your device is not accepting a second finger, but trying 3 times the same thing is not helping to isolate the "problem"

I have the same issue with my left finger, not entirely useless but it is much more difficult to use it.
I had that issue when I was using 9.0.5, it works sometimes with my left thumb, but works perfectly fine with my right thumb .
After updating to 9.0.6, I decided to remove all my fingerprints and re-add them, and now it works fine.
Give it a try if you have updated to 9.0.6.
I did actually, removed all of them and readded them in a dark room.. again I have the same behaviour. It's not that frustrating because I also have face unlock and the right finger but....
Same issue here and at least now I know I'm not alone. Right thumb works fine Everytime yet left works maybe 5pct of the time, or less . It's very frustrating

In my case I added three different fingers and had no issue with any so far. Of course it hasn't the fast response of the regular fingerprint readers but is not that bad.

I've seemed to notice that the angle must have to be exactly how one of the prints was recorded. Even with this, I can only get it to work 20pct of the time .
I'd much rather have a dedicated print reader like my v30
Had same issue. Only one finger working consistently. I just changed the wallpaper back the original one it shipped with and the scanner issue has resolved!
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the fingering reader is a learning type, so the more you use it the more it recognizes what produces failed and successful attempts. It's quite possible that we're just not using our left thumb as often and that the algorithm doesn't necessarily differentiate right from left, but just knows what the different prints look like, which ones to accept and which ones take priority in the line to make more accurate. This might be something worth sending OnePlus feedback on.
So far I think OP should really optimize whatever can be done in software to be more forgiving of different angles. If the angle is the same, the reader works always and fast. So it's entirely capable of reading fingerprints correctly. Why are the "regular" readers not having problems with different angles is beyond me and I suspect (and hope) it has to do with software.

Actually in coding I'm pretty sure anytime something receives an input value it gives an output. Something happens from the moment the scanner realizes there's an object waiting to be scanned, it produces some kind of expected coded result which causes this or that particular activity to happen or not happen. It isn't that difficult to see how it could be storing particular information to "learn" from.
Has anyone tried replacing the stock screen protector or removing it completely to see if that affects the fingerprint scan behavior?
I think you guys are just more coordinated with your right thumb so you place it perfectly everytime but when it comes to the left one which in sure you rarely use it's more difficult. I would suggest just using your left thumb for a day or 2. Then see if it improved

I can confirm that training sessions for my left thumb, after initially registering it, helped immensely. Whether the reader was trained, or I was, or both, is a matter of some debate. [emoji106]

Anyone else experiencing issues with the fingerprint reader?
I've set up the maximum if 5 fp, but interestingly all the 5 are the same finger.... And the device won't recognise my finger ad soon as I lock the phone.
Tried with different fingers= same result.....
No matter what I'm doing, clean cache, re-set, etc....
I've already exchanged the phone but the new one is the same....
Any idea how to fix it?
Sounds like your fingers aren't compatible. Is it a common practice to have the same finger registered five times? Only have once perfinger myself and never have an issue unlocking.
My experience is it gets a lot better with time. I did make two entries for my left thumb which helped increase read rate from maybe 2/3 to >9/10. Other fingers read well and got better. In sunlight, in dark, no problem it just works. If your fingerprints are in some way unusual or hard to read it may "just be you.".
Do you have a friend whose finger you can borrow to test things out? Rule out the phone ?

Sounds like your fingers aren't compatible. Is it a common practice to have the same finger registered five times? Only have once perfinger myself and never have an issue unlocking.

I was really upset about not reading my fingerprints so I tried with the same finger and surprisingly registered again....and again.

My experience is it gets a lot better with time. I did make two entries for my left thumb which helped increase read rate from maybe 2/3 to >9/10. Other fingers read well and got better. In sunlight, in dark, no problem it just works. If your fingerprints are in some way unusual or hard to read it may "just be you.".
Do you have a friend whose finger you can borrow to test things out? Rule out the phone ?

Tried with my wife's finger. It reads a little bit better,but the overall successfully unlock by fp is way below the acceptable number (tried around 10 times, unlocked around 3-5)

Oh that's awful! I'm consistently >9/10 after a month and half of use. Even early on was probably75%. Only problem I have is right after a shower it doesn't like swollen skin fingers.
As a test I just did 20 unlocks using the various four fingers i defined. Only one fail, and that was left thumb at an angle.
Phone is definitely better than iPhone 6 I have for work (50% rate).

How does everyone register their same finger more than once? It tells me I've already registered that finger?
I noticed a dramatic improvement when I washed my hands really well, cleaned my screen, THEN registered my fingers.
Are you using a screen protector? If you are that is probably your problem.

Using the official oneplus tempered glass screen protector.
Yes compared to the Vivo and other phones in built fingerprint reader OP6T's fingerprint reader is slow and has some issues.
