Oneplus 5 vs Nokia 8 - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I cant decide which one to get. Both are priced 30 euro apart. I know many will say get the Oneplus 5 but I want an unbiased recommendation. Also, how is the updates situation on the oneplus 5 ?

Both companies are pretty stellar in terms of updates I guess. Nokia doesn't have unlocked bootloader yet. If you are in to custom ROMs I would go for the OP5. I was waiting for the pixel 2 to make a decision....but with those prices I'm going for the OP5

Nokia: locked bootloader, limited history with Android.
OnePlus: any rom you like, updates getting better all the time.
Pick whichever sounds better.

Only thing limiting Nokia 8 is 4GB of RAM. For most, this will be enough, but for a power user, you may notice apps closing sooner. In a year, it's not quite clear if 4gb will be sufficient.

I'd say OnePlus.
The reason I chose OnePlus was the development support it gets from the community.
Also, 8GB RAM is not too shabby either. In 1 or 2 years all phones will have 8GB. So the OnePlus is somewhat future proof in that regard.
In the end it all depends on your needs. I wanted a fast phone with good development support and affordable price. OnePlus is right there in the middle.
My second choice would be some Pixel.

If you care about the security updates and you will use tock ROM and want a better camera setup, higher display resolution then go with the Nokia. There will be 6GB RAM version soon, worth to wait a little I believe.

Is ZTE developer friendly?

Hey folks,
what are the experiences with developing custom roms/kernels for ZTE?
Does ZTE release any helpfull sources, or are they as "closed sourced" as Samsung is?
Currenty OnePlus are releasing all sources they have and developers need, and as a result just 2 weeks after the launch there are already ALL imporant customs roms are available for the OP3. Can we expect any neraly simmilar from ZTE?
Regards,
Mika
They are not friendly at all. Some of the Axon series can't even be rooted so yea.
for the moment we're all waiting anxiously with the hope that ZTE releases unlocking bootloader and sources?
Sounds not very promising or motivating to buy the Axon 7. I really don't get it why companies are trying to prevent million of android enthusiast to buy their devices ...
they probably see stuff like sources as intellectual property which could be copied by their competitors or lead to more exploits.

Kernelsources fall under GPl though. So if they dont comply with the Licence you could just sue them for it.
I was thinking of things like drivers for proprietary stuff like the speakers, DAC, HDMI etc, anything that they've made themselves or licensed from a third party.
Axon 7 is from specs side way better than 1+3 in my opinion and it costs only €50 more...but...the thing about hard or impossible to root and lack of custom ROMs holds me from buying it.
I am unsure about ZTE to deliver long-term updates...usually....I can only rely on custom ROMs for updates.
At the moment, I still haven't decided which one to get. I am torn between community support (1+3) vs better balanced specs (Axon7).
I agree the ZTE Axon 7 looks really good. I am a bit concerned with its lack of root. Without root no Custom O/S or software will be developed. I have pre ordered the phone but may cancel due to lack of root. I will decide soon what to do.

An Android smartphone without root possibility and custom ROMs, as long as the manufacturer keeps delivering updates...let say for at least 2 years... you do not have a huge problem.
The problem is...if you do not have root, do not have custom ROMs and the manufacturer does not deliver updates at all....the phone is so good as a piece of junk
Apparently some of the chinese ones are getting google play and other google apps on them, that isn't usually just as easy as installing the apk file so how are they getting these apps on?
Any chinese phone I've bought generally refuses to let you install google apps as they want system access.

I completely agree on this. I'm split between those two and consider a third one which hasn't been released yet the Asus Zenfone 3 deluxe.
I guess we will wait somewhat longer for more information to come out.
@celoxocis
Zenfone 3 deluxe, the variant with Snap 821+6GB RAM+256GB memory is too expensive.
The 820, 4GB RAM and 64GB memory version is interesting too...but...nobody knows when this will come to Europe.

For Europe it will be launched after "IFA 2016" which is 04.-09. September 2016.
The good thing is the older Zenfone Series is already supported by CM.
And i know some CM devs are looking forward to add support for the Zenfone 3 deluxe once out.
I will definitely wait. For me it comes down which one of the three gets the best dev support.
For now:
1+3 is leading (except for their Dash(Vooc) Charger sources. which is why i still hold back)
ZTE Axon 7. Who knows if it ever be unlock-able. The forum post might just have been another PR gag.
Zenfone 3 deluxe. Waiting patiently...
Almost complete pre-order but decided against it due to its uncertain rootability. I still own Oneplus One and love it but want slight upgrade and thought Axon 7 would be the perfect upgrade progression. I will wait and see.

I like how you said "slight upgrade"! I love my OPO too, it is as fast as ever and plenty powerful, but the front facing speakers of the Axon 7 are very intriguing and I'm also considering it unless ZTE is awful with pushing out updates and if the bootloader will stay locked with no root. Then the only option is OP3.
Another One owner here looking to "upgrade". The battery on my phone is getting bad. I'm sure a new battery would breath life into this phone but after my wife's new Moto G (125$) camera bested my One's, I knew it was time. Bring on the front face speakers and Daydream support, as long as the bootloader is unlocked! Better have double tap to wake!

It has double tap to wake. Very useful.
Word going around is that ZTE said in a community webinar tonight that it's a matter of when NOT if the bootloader is going to be unlocked. Doesn't sound like it's launching with an unlocked bootloader but it will be unlocked "later". Kinda lame.
I can confirm that on the webinar it was stated its a matter of "when" not "if"

Looking to buy OP 2; couple questions

Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 320 USD and therefore OnePlus 2 has really caught my eye. I've found a deal for 300 USD and I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. The OnePlus 2 sports Snapdragon 810. I haven't heard much about it, but isn't SD 810 infamous for its issues with overheating? Is overheating an issue with OnePlus 2? Can it be completely resolved by flashing a different ROM/Kernel?
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is OnePlus 2 a viable choice, despite the fact that almost 2 years passed from the release? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me?
Thanks in advance.

1. Snapdragon 810: daily usage is good (I'm not a gamer at all): Messenger, Fenix (Twitter Client), WhatsApp, Facebook through Chrome Dev: everything is good. Yes, just good. Not awesome.
2. Long period of time ? Hell no. Look at OxygenOS update(s) for example. Well. we still don't have 7.x as OnePlus 3 / 3T already have 7.1.x. ROM support. Maybe custom ones yeah, but I think that's all.
Also, Grarak, which is one of the maintainer of LineageOS for the OnePlus 2, seems to stop build ROMs, as announced here. This might be an issue in future, even if there is some developers on this phone.
3. Satisfied ? Not at all. I bought this phone because I had an invite back in time there were still some, and I though hype would be the same as OnePlus One. But very disappointed with phone.
Just go for 3T, or if you have time, wait for OnePlus 4 | 5 , rumors say OnePlus might announced it soon.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer.
I'd like to look back on some questions:
2. Well, I was probably planning to use custom ROMs exclusively, I'll see about that. I didn't expect much from OygenOS to be honest. The thing about Garak seems worrying though.
3. I'd really like to go for the 3T, but I'm restricted by my budget which is around 330 USD. Do you have a better phone to propose?

You could search for the LG G4 for example, which as a Snapdragon 808, 3GB of RAM, Sdcard and QHD Screen, around 325-350$. Be sure, if you buy it, to check for an unlocked one (no locked bootloader for example).
If you search, you could be able to find a OnePlus 3 (just 3, not 3T), under 350$.

While G4 is certainly an interesting choice, I'm hesitant when going for it since I'm worried of all the bootloop issues that were reported to occur. I also think that I could use a little bumped-up specs.
Thank you for reminding me of OnePlus 3. Since there are small differences between 3 and 3T, I'll try and find a deal under 350$. If you have any online shops to propose, please do so.

Sadly there are no entries for my market (Europe). However, browsing Ebay, I found a listing claiming they have a new OP 3T 64 GB at $352 "in perfect condition". The seller states: "Bought as Anniversary present. To be honest it's a lovely phone if you like Android But I wanted an iPhone. My wife thought I'd like this instead. Used for 2 hrs around the house and that's all. "
How legit do you think this is?
Oh yess man! I've been using the device for quite awhile now and yes I won't recommend it to u now. It's good but not awesome, just good! Moreover, the software updates are kind of on a standstill now however Custom roms are abundant.
At this point of time, within your budget, I would rather recommend you to go with a device with a sd625! Excellent processor with an exceptional battery management, no heating no matter what you throw at it! Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Lenovo P2 or the upcoming Moto G5 plus ( supposedly to come with Dual Pixel tech same as in Samsung S7) are a few to mention. Moreover, Xiaomi Mi 5 (comes with SD820) is a crazy good phone to consider if u can get your hands on one! Highly recommended!!

Agreed. I don't use camera that much so it's fine for me. I wish it had more software development than it, but even then, it seems to be extremely good out of the box (software-wise). So yeah, I'm in kind of a dilemma now, cause I need a device that will last 3 years or more. Also I can't go with Redmi Note 4 or Lenovo P2 because they don't have the required bands for my provider.

Then my opinion is that u must wait a week or two and buy yourself a Moto G5+ it will be having the same multipurpose fingerprint sensor (the one Lenovo uses), a class apart camera, much faster updates and vast dev community and this time they are even implementing moto voice feature which was earlier enjoyed only by the moto x users! I am not a moto fan though but this device looks promising!

Seems reasonable. I might as well wait for G5+ and buy it when it becomes available. Thank you once again.
Take my advice and don't buy it.
So did you go for the OP2?
The G5 looks like a good alternative!
no save your hard earned money and buy a better phone, this is already a 2 year old phone and its not worth buying anymore, otherwise if you find a new one for just $50 bucks go for it otherwise forget this phone even existed.

Do you regret buying MI A1?

Vote and post your comments on your beloved MI A1.
I should've bought RN4.
not regret because i have a feeling custom ROMS will fix all the issues we have. it's gonna be huge....
There are quite some problems with the phone but I guess custom ROM can somehow sort it out. For the price : performance ratio, it can't go wrong.
No. It will be very well supported by custom ROMs in the future I am sure, just like my old Moto G 2015 is one of the most popular devices running LineageOS. The price to performance is great as @soralz said despite Xiaomi taking their time on Oreo.
Neh. None at all.
It's the best budget phone that I can buy on my country, the camera is not at a flagship level but I don't take many photos and the rest is ok also the battery is enough for a complete day.
Off-toppic: @jglass071 I also have a Moto G 2015 running LOS 14.1
There are higher specification and lower price Chinese handsets available. Lets not pretend we all got a bargain. The dual camera is trash. The reason (most of us) bought this phone was for buttery smooth Android with first in line updates. This has turned out not to be the case.
So from my point of view I do regret buying the phone, as I could have had better spec Chinese phone (specifically battery) and flashed a custom ROM. Please lets not be childish and start asking me to list them. We can all use GSM arena compare tool.
Higher spec & lower price than Xiaomi mi a1 ... what a joke. The reason you chose it bcoz it's the cheapest budget phone with a good spec and much reliable Chinese brand.
Seriously ppl just dun understand you get what you've paid for. From what I see so far, ppl who ***** about this phone couldn't afford other than this. Pathetic ...
Sorry but you must have misread my previous post.
I stated I bought the phone for the Android One software. The hardware doesn't particularly bother me although it would have been nice to have a decent camera and a bigger battery.
For the price this early 2016 chip does the job and the phone should be good for another 6-12 months with only 4gb of onboard RAM.
Certainly a solid choice in this spending bracket.
Sorry you got so hot tempered with me about the phone, I guess you really love your MiA1 which I respect.
Maybe a quick browse on GSM Arena using compare tool? Always good to see what's out there. Of course, these options would be without the 'Android One' software.
Lol ... who doesn't know about GSMArena, I said that as I know you're unable to state out the phone higher spec and cheaper than xiaomi mi a1.
I'm happy for what I've paid for, it does what I've required and I'm sure there are room for it to improve. Unlike you guys being cheapskate, spent a little money and expect xiaomi to give premium supports. Late updates ended up like crying babies.
Some goes there are lotsa bloatwares and spywares ... for christ sake, you reckon Google, Microsoft, Apple doesn't gather users' information? Stop daydreaming there ...
It's a shame you have become so bitter about your failed investment.
Maybe learn to research the market more next time rather than take your frustrations out on others.
The biggest regret I have is buying it all full price, 2 weeks before the price dropped. No other regrets.
Name one phone with "higher specification and lower price" I bet you can't.
You're another non post reader. Look on GSM arena I'm not here to do your homework boy. Out of pity, I'll start you off with the Xiaomi MiMax2.
Lol max 2 is certainly neither higher specs Nor cheaper than a1.
Unfortunately you are badly wrong again. Mi max 2 is available for 'equi price' of MiA1 and with larger screen and battery.
Many thanks.
As I said, you may want to investigate GSM arena 'compare tool'.
Not at all.
Pure bloat-free android = bliss
No regrets! Good phone for the money.!
There are always some kids crying over delayed updates and "spyware", "bloatware",...
But really, who cares.
I'm satisfied with my A1!
That's great.
As long as you don't have expectations for Android One experience.

Oneplus 5 ? Or wait for the 6

As the title suggests I want to upgrade to a oneplus 5 but don't know if I should wait for the six
Do you need a new phone as soon as possible? --> Buy a OnePlus 5/5T
If you can wait and want to show off later --> Buy a OnePlus 6 (or 7 )
The op6 will be launched on june or july, not before
So if you need a phone quickly, buy the 5 or 5T

Personally wouldn't buy another 1+ device, you buy the Oneplus on launch day like i did, obsolete in 5 months, buy the 5T, obsolete come the next quarter.
The 6 will more than likely be followed by the 6T, i'm tired of this, plus the lack of OIS is something i'm never going to commit to again.
So for me, neither, buy the HTC 12 or wait for the next pixel, either way it's not a 1+.
But that's me
PS: if from the 6 onwards it's going to be 1 per year and they fix things like the lack of OIS then yea i'll consider it, but honestly they've burnt their bridges with me at the moment, so long as HTC can actually put out a device with anything close to the battery i get on my 1+5 i'll be happy.
Don't stress! They probably will release Oneplus 5Z in the next week! (Sarcasm)
No but depending on how urgent, wait for the next one. Else go for a 5T

Lol are you sure mate ? That's been said for some time and yet they're still here not only that but have you actually lived with a HTC phone? When was the last one you owned ? They're absolutely rapid, there is literally nothing bad about the latest phones at all (ish)
The ish is for the one flaw that they always put in, usually the battery but it's the small imperfections which make it have character, the camera has been superb in the last few devices, I've had every flagship bar two the one X and the M8, every other I've had and they've all been amazing bar the one fault
I didn't like the 11 so went with the 1+ but the one thing I'd loved to have had is the camera which is up there with the pixels, the HTC 12 if rumours are to be believed then it'll be a beast, ois, great camera, 845, lot of memory, probably an SD slot.
5/5T are great phones. you won't be disappointed with anything about them (maybe up to 2-3yrs).
there are some concerns with their cameras, but in my opinion, you can take some great shots w/ them, comparable to S8/Note8.
Best Performance, Good Display, Good Cameras, Great Selfie, And a lot of community support... What else you need!?

Missing ois, if you've got a tripod all the time the yep it's great, but the lack of ois means it's a deal breaker for me, I didn't think it'd be that bad. Never again man.
As already stated, depends on urgency, features and price. I personally would buy a 5T and not worry about the 6 so much. This is because the 5\5T is fast enough and since you are going to mess around with custom roms and kernels, the ported GCam with portrait mode makes world of a difference to the picture quality. However, even with out GCam, I dont really care too much about picture quality, I dont really take that much pictures anyway. The value for money is already here with the 5\5T and from current trend with OnePlus, the 6 will most likely be more expensive.
To be honest (you would of heard this a million times now), its all about what you want out of your phone and how much you willing to pay for it. There is no one phone that is best for everyone. The thing I will say is one of the best value for money phone is the OnePlus 5T and you will probably get the majority agreeing with that statement.

Phone close to death, wait for OP9, or...?

Hello friends,
I'm here for your opinion. My current phone, Mi 9 (got this for 2 years... Probably close to the longest I kept a phone, not because I loved it, just because nothing excited me in the meanwhile), is starting to annoy me with the USB port not working 70% of the time, etc.
So I'm on the lookout for a new device to get next month.
Choices are I think:
Mi 11/whatever Pro version will be (dev for Xiaomi is just OK, and there is really no accessories to find, and I'm a case collection wh*re ^^)
Samsung S21+ (I say byebye to flashing fun for a couple years)
Pixel 5
OP8 Pro (can find some good deals for it)
Thing is I'm thinking that OP9 cannot be so far off, but how will the price be? I'm sure I won't care for SD 888 so it's not really about the specs, I mostly worry about weither or not the price will be right.
I guess my days of new phone every year are gone as well, so would be good to have something with a bit of long term support.
So question here in OP8 forums, do you think it's going to still be a relevant device for a while yet? Or should I look in 2021 stuff?
The OnePlus 9 should still be very good device. We don't know enough about it yet like prices, cameras, etc. Maybe available in March...stay tuned!
The good things of OnePlus devices are....
- easy unlock bootloader
- unbrick tool available
- custom roms/kernel available
You might wait the review of OnePlus 9 Pro , not sure when.
I have seen development in Mi 10 Pro forum in XDA not much development there.
I suggest you to wait for op 9 pro since current flagman op 8 pro have very big troubles with display

Thanks all for taking the time to answer!
I somehow did not get notifications...
I've set my mind on the S21 Ultra for this time after all, my current phone is working terribly and need something new ASAP!

Lol u sure?
If you're in the US then fair enough, if you're anywhere else then it's not worth it, it's not the same phone.
It'll overheat, battery won't be as good, my OnePlus 8 Pro would outpace it by some way, the GPU is awful.
Avoid the exynos at all costs, even the camera processing is worse on the exynos.
Check before you buy
You could get the port and battery replaced.
I'd wait till latter in the year to see what rolls out. The economy is tanking so likely it will be more of a buyer's market.
In my opinion Samsung's latest offerings suck.
I wouldn't buy anything without an SD card slot.
The SD card makes an ideal data drive... yes a dual drive 1tb laptop in your hand.
A used good condition 10+ 512gb 12gb ram 4G variant can be had for around $600 at reliable seller B&H Photo.
This was Samsung's last good Note, running on Pie it's very stable, fast and runs well.
No 5G on this model means better battery life. For most 5G speeds suck.
Even if you're in the States, I'd think twice about getting a Samsung (aka Applesauce)

Hmm I see what you mean.
I don't care for SD really. Most OP phones don't have them for a while and so do many. By the way, I cannot remember when was the last time I had a phone with an SD card slot?
Also my point is to be able to make good pictures.
Leaves me with Samsung, if we believe tests Xiaomi 11 or iPhone.
iPhone nope. I like the look of the 12 series, but stuff like my watch would not work well with that.
Xiaomi why not but I want a change. Also, maybe they are headed the way of Huawei?
OP9 may do good pics but will it be : good pictures but not great for a flagship story?
Yeah I could wait but I don't want to spend anymore on my old phone to repair it lol.
I'll see OP again at OP 11 I think!
