I mean I've had many frikin phones in the pass last one before this was a sensation ...
I'm saying all this cause for the first time I find a stock rom really fast/smooth. So is it really worth it a custom rom?
And I read here and there about a browser lag? What lag? This is one or the smoothest browser I tried on a phone
Let me know what rom u running and if u really feel the difference ..remember ..to review a rom u need a couple of days ..heavy use ..right after u load a rom it would be fast and smooth that's usually the case.

im using stock KE2
one of the only reasons ive seen people use custom roms is because of the battery life .Im fine on my KE2 i can go for 2+days without a charge
I think what they mean by browser lag is that some custom ROMs have buggy browsers ..... im not sure of this
Mine is KE7 I have no problem with battery either ...

ill probably change roms a year from now so i can try the AOSP feel of CM7 or CM8 if android 4 is around the corner
basically i want to try "android" for what it is
With the brute force of dualcore and 1Gb ram, i doubt a customized ROM can make a significant difference like what it did on the SGS1. Im using KF1 ( stock with my phone ) and I have no battery or speed issues, I still have all the samsung bloat installed just for stress testing. Will be removing it maybe tomorrow.
Nah, there is no real speed difference that I can notice and I have tried every rom here exept MIUI. A number of guys are running the phone underclocked by 33% and don't notice any difference. Outside of gaming it would seem we have power to spare for the moment. I cant comment on the stock browser as I used it just long enough to figure out the text reflow blows chunks and moved over to opera. I never had a problem making it through the day and that is all the battery I require.
Still performance be it speed or improved battery life is only one aspect of custom roms. There is also the various mods, bug fixes, and extended options and functionality, that chefs throw in that make installing a rom a no brainer to me. Roms are in their infancy on this device, I expect them to get a lot more interesting after 2.3.4 drops and they mature.
I cannot see any performance difference with villainrom either. However it seems to me that the battery usage is much better than with stock rom.
With normal usage (except games) the SGS2 performs great - you just don't need to worry about speed.
@qwerty warrior:
there's a fix for the laggy browser in custom roms.
I've been using VillainRom v1.4 for a little now (tried out MIUI before which was nice but wanted something with a little less bugs.) and mainly the only reason I switched from stock was to test if the battery is any better (been getting similar to stock battery life) and to have a deodexed rom for themes. Also, I've been running my SGS II UC at 500mHz and I had experience no lag at all. Haven't played too many intensive games but, when I played Riptide GP it ran smoothly. Overall to me the main advantage to having a custom rom now (until CM or MIUI are out and stable) are for the themes available to a deodexed rom.
Hope this helps.

I am deciding on whether to buy an s4 or an xperia z1 ... I have watched gaming videos of the s4 and some games seem to lag (e.g. san andreas) while they work fine on the z1... And i read people complaining that the s4 is indeed laggy, not just games but in touchwiz and transition animations also.... are there fixes/updates that solve this 'lagginess' or is it still present till now?
lag in TW roms is a must...hehe, all TW roms lags, some lags more and some less, there will always be a tiny little of lag...sadly, about gaming its not TW problem, its more of optimizing the games for the cpu and gpu, if you look at galaxy s2 and s3 they plays gta sa without lag, but in S4 it lags a lot.....
is it the same thing on the exynos version? it's strange, galaxy s4 being the most popular smartphone at the time did not get optimized versions of games.
yes, its in every version, i my self have i9500 and even with TW custom roms it lags, cm based roms are a lot better in terms of speed, but they have some bugs so its not the best solution, miui rom is very good but they don't support it anymore, maybe later they will be back, i have TW based custom rom and i get angry when i want to use the phone quickly but don't have the needed speed......in the beginning of the next year i will be buying a new phone but its a bit of problem for me, i really want to have the NOTE 4, but i know that it will lag like the S4.....
I understand it lags in touchwiz interface but it does lag in games at well? the exynos version?
Lags
I got a S4 with a custom kernel. No lags so far, I got the International Variant, the GT-I9505 with the latest Firmware from Samsung. I debloated it by myself so maybe that could be the reason why it don't lags. My Ram is around 800MB when I use it normal. Greetings
it lags in games not because of TW, its because of bad optimization for the cpu and gpu....maybe if you flash cm based rom it will lag a bit less but still don't think for a second that its going to be smooth, its not only S4 problem, htc one m7 also have the same problem....and many more, for gaming you have to get an iphone......sadly....

This will probably fix your lag (only for TW). From what I read CM/AOSP roms also have better performance.

No it's probably because you have a custom kernel where the tweak is already applied.

Well than he can also flash a custom kernel. I can give him a link
No lag
I'm using stock 4.4.2 NG8 [open Europe] and there is no lag ever
lagged with me once but i found that an apk called [Galaxy Locker] causes this lag, the battery is kind of good and the overheating is almost fixed
while playing huge games Like [Modern Combat 5,Iron man, Assassin Creed Pirates] or even browsing.the max temperature my cell phone reached was 36.2 *C and it's great, while recharging it's only 31.2 *C
can't say much tw rom is full of bloatware..debloat the rom and you get smooth TW rom
Hi, back in 2011 I've bought the Galaxy S2 because I was just tired of -installing this, bricking there, rebooting here- stuff on my Motorola Defy, tears and blood came out off me till I finally could flash the device again and left it factory default, so I said to me "I'll just buy a device that just WORKS" and that's what I've got with my S2, there has been 4 long years and I think it is time for it to go, I'm just tired of it and I don't use it anymore.
There is a deal with a man that would change me it for an Xperia Play, I think it's a good deal, because at least I would use it to play the PS One games I played in my childhood. But now it comes again: -kernels, flashing, restoring, rebooting- I can feel the fear just from thinking about it, but I think it is necessary since the device lacks so much in power, I would crack it up to get an overall better experience and play Vice City on it decently, but if I do it, I will do it once, and for ever.
I would like to keep the closest to stock as it can be: good battery life, and everything just working as it should be, I'm not buying a broken device. What do I need to do to overclock it? Is it totally necessary to install the DoomKernel V14 in order to do it? I want to increase the RAM as well, from 512MB to 1GB.
Would it be to much to ask for an answer like this?:
I've used the Xperia Play to play a lot of games including Vice City, my device is running @1.9 GHz and it got 1GB of RAM, to do it you necessarily got to root your phone (link), install DoomKernel V14 2.3.4 Gingerbread (link), then do this to overclock it (link), and this to increase the RAM (link), mmm... as well there is a trick you can do it as well to increase the performance...
Something like that? And any other information about it that you find useful for a beginner user like me (like what to install in order to play games) would be greatly appreciated as well.
Sorry if I sound very demanding and/or uneducated, english is not my first language and I feel I still can not get totally understood in this language, I know it is to much to ask for, but if there is one big soul that knows it everything about this device, that got it all clear in his mind, and that would help this beginner I would love him for ever. Thank you everyone for the time and for this big community, cheers!
Hi, I try to answer your questions, but it's not so easy.
Xperia Play have never got Android 4. The last official release is Gingerbred 2.3.4. On your S2 you was used to on ISC or higher I think. ICS fo Xplay was released only like beta (you can still download it on Sony's webpage). You have three options:
Android 2.3 which was official and with full support - it means gamepad, touchpads and everything else is working. It gets you the best performance, official PSX emulator works (you can convert your own games with PSXperia - not all games run through this emulator - e.g. Tony Hawk's titles, NHL's etc. not), but many games is compiled to higher Android versions or even many games lost support for Gingerbread in time (Trial 3, Trials Frontier, Crossy Road, Gangstar Vegas etc.)
Android 4.0 which was released only in beta - it has gamepad and touchpad support, but not in all games (however there is only few games with this problem). Performance is significantly worse (480p kernel is not an option, it's must have), official PSX emulator doesn't works there. But with RAM Manager/Boost my Xperia, smart swap settings and overclocking you can play almost everything (there are some lags here and there, but it's playable).
Android 4.1 which is minimum Android version if you want to use more and more "modern" material version of apps and some aps and games generally (Tomb Rider Go, new Nova Launcher, new Solid Explorer etc.). It has almost no support for touchpads but even gamepad - even with touchpad activator. Modern Combat 4, FIFA 12 and long list of games in 4.1 have no touchpad or even gamepad support (in MC4 for example gamepad works, touchpads not, FIFA 12 completely without Xplay support). You can always use GameKeyboard and map the buttons, but it's not so comfortable and offten even so optimized like the original solution from developer (FIFA12) - however sometimes it's vice versa and touchpad implementation from developer is horrible (Splinter Cell Conviction).
Of course, there are some projects with 4.2, 4.4 even 5.0, but it's not for daily use and totaly not for gaming.
There are some good ROMs for all three version:
Android 2.3 Gingerbread:
1) Gin2Kittkat 3.3.0 - in my opinion it's the most powerful ROM for Xperia Play - in terms of options and theming so as in pure performance
2) AuroraPlay - in 2013 it was the number one in pefrormance, but nowadays G2KK is better and newer
3) NXT ROMs - I have used them in 2012/2013 and they were awesome. Second version is beautifull
Android 4.0 IceCream Sandwich - most of them are Sony based, for example NexPlay is Cyanogenmod based (I don't know if it has touchpad support, but I think not)
1) Xperia Play Z Final Edition - I'm using it right now and with some of my modifications (debloated, replaced apks, removed small aps, changed bootanimation etc.) it is the best ROM for this phone in terms of modern system/gaming support. It has touchpad support in all games I've tried (I think ironic is that MC4 or Asphalt 8 run better than Crossy Road or Puzzle Craft 2), you can run some other aplications and games you cannot on GB.
2) Ultimate HD - it lacs some features which Play Z ROM have, but it's nothing important (at least for me). Only auto brightness doesn't work for me.
3) Express ICS
4) Neo2Play - aromainstaller with options what would you like to install
Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean - all JB ROMs are based on Cyanogen mod cause official JB never comes to Xperia 2011 phones
1) Paranoid Android - best ROM for me if I have to choose JB. As the only one it has brightness slider in notification toggles area
2) Sonygenmod 10 - it looks like official Sony themed Android with ported Sony apps.
3) Slimbeam - it's fast and stable
4) JellyZeusbean - also Sony themed ROM
I think the best kernels are Lupus - for GB and JB. For ICS it's the same I think. But Lupus for ICS has small data partition, so rather use Lupus ICS/GB or Doom ICS (and Link2SD cause 600MB is still not enough). For GB there is also Extreme kernel, which has fantastic performance, but battery drain is crazy. If you want better performance choose 480p version which can offer more free RAM (even 30-50MB). I think there are better ways how to record videos than with Xperia Play. All of these kernels allow you to overclock, but remember - higher frequency meand shorter battery life. And for example my phone cannot go higher than 1,5GHz, on 1,6 it will restart itself. 1,4GHz is enough for everything, small performance is mainly cause weak GPU. Higher frequencies allow you max play some games in FPSe witch OpenGL on.
You cannot simply add or change RAM capacity. You can make swap partition on your SD card, download file with swap script, or you can simply use Swapper (it's not practical). This will free up some ROM, not add capacity. It's necessary for some games which need more RAM than you physicaly have (I remember Angry Birds Go was impossible to run without swap partition). Here is the topic. Best setting for swap is 20 (on all versions of Android) in my opinion. In ICS and JB you can try 40 or even 60, but my experience is long response time and worse performance at all.
Some other tips: delete facebook and Messenger - they are killing performance and response time. Use Facebook lite or web browser. Don't install any apps you don't need or you aren't using more than 1 per month. More apps means more Link2SD apps and they are slowing down the phone. On Gingerbread use Nemus Launcher (till 2012 not in GPlay) or Xperia T modded launcher (the fastest) if you don't need features which has Nemus. On ICS or JB you can use Xperia Z modded launcher, Nemus or Nova (I'm using it right now and it's very good, fluid and if you run some game, it goes off the RAM). On GB you can also flash Adreno Booster, in some games you achieve better performance, in orhers more stable FPS.
Thank you so much for reply!!!! I love you man!!!! I have figured out a lot of things by searching myself since nobody seem to reply to me, but you know a lot of things I didn't know obviously. I didn't know that Gin2Kittkat was better in performance than Auroraplay LE, it looks beautiful as well! So I'll definitely give it a try. And as you are using the Xperia Play Z Final Edition ROM, can you tell me if it runs good GTA Vice City? Because as far as I have seen, it only runs smooth on modded 2.3.7 GB ROMs as Auroraplay LE.
I'm sorry for the late answer. Yes, GTA and some other games are unplayable on ICS/JB. As I said, for gaming is GB best. However more and more often you have to look after older apps version (it means outside Google play) cause developer compiled the newer one only for 3/4.0+ (even games like Benji Bananas, Subway surfers, Jetpack Joyride). And even paid games and apps is loosing support for GB. I think it's very unfair from developer to do this when there is no option to download (at least) older version (Locus, Officesuit etc.). There are plenty of apps and games which were GB compatible and nowadays they require even JB 4.4 (OneNote for example).
Thank you for everything man!
im really impressed with cm12.1, you should try it before going to a very outdated 4.0.4 :/

Hello Miichaell,
Thanks a lot for this full explanation and guide to Xperia Play flash options.
For Android 4.0 ICS roms, when you say "Performance is significantly worse", how does it compare to stock GB in facts ? Slowdowns ? Freezes ?
I mostly play emulator from the 8bits / 16bits era, and also PSX games... Do they work well with a rom like "xperia play z final ultimate edition" ? I don't play heavy games like MC4, GTA Vice City, Nova, etc.
I know GB based roms will always be better for playing, but as I use my Xperia Play as my daily smartphone, the lack of compatible applications is now a real problem.
Thanks for your advices !
Hi and sorry for the late answer. As I said - in fact everything what you need is also available for GB too. Sometimes you have to search on google little longer for older version of your apps, but almost all apps was already there in GB era, so they were available for GB (Onenote for example). And for everything is some alternative which is GB compatible (or was). If you never used any faster phone, ICS is good to use as daily driver - if you dont install FB, Messenger, Whatsapp and generally not to many apps. For better app compatibility and some speedup you could try JB (only CM) or the newest MM, but gamepad doesnt work at all in MM. If you want at least a little fast phone even without playing games, stay on old but awesome working GB.

Hello Miichaell,
Thanks for your answer.
I finally decided to try it by myself, so I flashed ICS with Xperia Play Z Final edition, but it was definitely too slow for me.
So I went back to Gin2Kitkat... And I guess I'll stick with it til the end of life of my phone.
By the way, do you know a reliable website where I could find old versions of APK ? I am currently looking for GB version of FEEDLY and EVERNOTE...
Thanks !

The fastest ICS ROM for the Xplay is Neo2Play V2.7 it is as fast as Gin2Kitkat but it has less free ram, may be you could give it a try.
Here is the link to Neo2Play Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2283653
If you decide to use Neo2Play I recommend you use doomkernel extracted from Xperia Play Z Final Edition, that is the best combination of Rom+Kernel I have found for the Play. Also overclocking all the way to 1.6 GHz helps a lot and for that Rom I never found an Issue by doing so. Actually I always kept 1.8 GHz max-400 min with no issues at all.
Hi everyone.
These days mostly every C.ROM has game lagging issues.
Whether it's AEX or Tesla.
(I mentioned the name of these two ROMs 'cause these ROMs used to be my favourite ones).
Every ROM lags, some lags high some lags low.
Not only lagging, also there's an internet slow issue.
Which makes it very irritating for a gamer.
(Games such as Clash of Clans, or 8 Ball Pool).
The ROM works fine in daily usage, but at gaming point almost every ROM has issues.
What is causing device to lag while playing games?
Also, why device's internet goes down when playing games or when device is hot?
MIUI ain't has such lagging or internet issues.
(I'm not saying MIUI is best, it's bad at many points such as Memory Management, Notification Management, Heavy UI, Android Updates, Bloated.. But after having so much bad in it, It has stability for no lagging, or internet)
I just wanna ask devs/users, why is it so?
I know, MIUI is stable because of it's kernel, and Xiaomi doesn't release kernel sources.
But when there is no lagging issues in day to day usage, then why is there so much lagging in Games?
Try Mokee 7, no lag in games, i.e. Clash Royale.
Thanks for this post dude...

I did it today, flashed Jerrica Kernel for MiUi by Premaca (this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-2/development/kernel-jerrica-v1-1-t3395691). The ROM I've used is: "Version: V8.5.2.0.LHJMIED (MIUI8) - Stable" from official site http://en.miui.com/download-261.html (the developer one takes me to bootlop :/)

Yup bootloop issues have been faced by too many users,
That kernel work's only for older Miui 8 version, miui 8.5etc won't work.
if you're facing lags try one of my favourite trick
Just delete thermal management algorithm that exist on nougat based ROMS, its located at system/etc/thermal-engine.conf. so you will gain no lags when the phone's getting hot. At the cost of more battery drainage but for me that's worth it. Also if you're facing WiFi disconnecting problem try port wifi configuration from MIUI ROM in, system/etc/wifi copy all itu system, and set permission to rw-r-r, make sure you backup the orig file in case you need it. I always that when using nougat based ROM. Now switched to MIUI due to stability. I currently using octopus kernel and double tap 2 wake works like charm on MIUI 8.5.2.0
Recently got my S4 i9505 back, runs on factory stock 5.0.1 touchwiz, looking to root it, and install a rom? Which touchwiz, or pure android rom do you recommend?

Ressurection has many modification and customization, but i faced a little worst battery life than jdct one .... test both and see urself bro
stef_zii says rigth.
For me:
Give a Shot these -> JDCTeam(AOSP or LOS based) - LineageOS(LOS based) - Wizcyan(TW based) - SuperTW(TW based)
These are mostly known and good ones. RR has some (actually so much) bugs and Devs don't fix them, but you can try it.
Tw roms based Android 5 or 4 and some of them using Samsung galaxy S5-6-7-8 or Note4-5-7 framework that looks like these devices, but not same.
On the other hand AOSP&LOS based roms are pretty nice designed and looks cool. Substratum is a world that you can change mostly everything in your phone. Stability and daily speed better but i don't know if gaming speed good or not(i don't play games, just sometimes little games). But you couldn't feel any lag at heavy games like GTA San Andreas (at medium or medium-high settings), Asphalt 8, NFS, or others..
And at AOSP&LOS based roms, try Android 6-7 and 8(still beta in AOSP but LOS is optimazed, still not fully trust).
Edit: Forgot to say that, camera in TW roms gives better quality than others because of Samsung's tricks.. But enough for me at daily usage & Stability & Style/Design better at AOSP&LOS based roms for me.
So, if you have any question, i'll be here. But mostly, you need to try many of roms.

Thanks! i was actually thinking of just installing Google Play Edition 5.1, it looks fast and perfect for what i want, also as i'm not installing a newer version of android, which would slightly slow down the device with only lags here and there. While having S4 at 5.1 will possibly give really good performance?
is it stable?
how about performance?
maybe daily driver?
this is rom link ... https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...om-untouched-google-play-edition-5-1-t3198177

Actuay, i tried both GPE Android 4.4.4 and 5.1, but i don't remember 5.1. GPE 4.4.4 really nice and still it gives best performance for daily usage, but has a little bug which so many videos at youtube lags.
Don't forget that you need a custom kernel for both. Because random reboots broke everything if you use it at stock kernel(as i remember).
Google made a good job even at S4.
I know daily usage at 5.1 but not for long time, it was a few days before random reboots(i want a advanture with stock kernel), so actually it was really good. But as you probably know that Android 5.1 will always have some bad stuffs about structer of itself. Just give a shot for both.. (Camera still can't be reach to TW based roms quality)

Hi This is exactly what I was looking for. My sister's phone got stolen. No money to buy a new one yet. I gave her my old S4 i9505 to use but I am afraid she might find it a little to slow from what she is used to. I had mine rooted so I am trying to find a good Rom for her. She is not a gamer though. All I need is Rom that allows her S4 to have a great battery life, is fast and stable... Oh and it would even better if it was above Android 5.0... Android 5.1 or above would be great or.... A rom that only looks as if it was above 5.0.
Any recommendations? Please help. Thank u in advance.
