Roms!!! R they much faster than stock? - Galaxy S II General

I mean I've had many frikin phones in the pass last one before this was a sensation ...
I'm saying all this cause for the first time I find a stock rom really fast/smooth. So is it really worth it a custom rom?
And I read here and there about a browser lag? What lag? This is one or the smoothest browser I tried on a phone
Let me know what rom u running and if u really feel the difference ..remember ..to review a rom u need a couple of days ..heavy use ..right after u load a rom it would be fast and smooth that's usually the case.

im using stock KE2
one of the only reasons ive seen people use custom roms is because of the battery life .Im fine on my KE2 i can go for 2+days without a charge
I think what they mean by browser lag is that some custom ROMs have buggy browsers ..... im not sure of this

Mine is KE7 I have no problem with battery either ...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

ill probably change roms a year from now so i can try the AOSP feel of CM7 or CM8 if android 4 is around the corner
basically i want to try "android" for what it is

With the brute force of dualcore and 1Gb ram, i doubt a customized ROM can make a significant difference like what it did on the SGS1. Im using KF1 ( stock with my phone ) and I have no battery or speed issues, I still have all the samsung bloat installed just for stress testing. Will be removing it maybe tomorrow.

Nah, there is no real speed difference that I can notice and I have tried every rom here exept MIUI. A number of guys are running the phone underclocked by 33% and don't notice any difference. Outside of gaming it would seem we have power to spare for the moment. I cant comment on the stock browser as I used it just long enough to figure out the text reflow blows chunks and moved over to opera. I never had a problem making it through the day and that is all the battery I require.
Still performance be it speed or improved battery life is only one aspect of custom roms. There is also the various mods, bug fixes, and extended options and functionality, that chefs throw in that make installing a rom a no brainer to me. Roms are in their infancy on this device, I expect them to get a lot more interesting after 2.3.4 drops and they mature.

I cannot see any performance difference with villainrom either. However it seems to me that the battery usage is much better than with stock rom.
With normal usage (except games) the SGS2 performs great - you just don't need to worry about speed.
@qwerty warrior:
there's a fix for the laggy browser in custom roms.

I've been using VillainRom v1.4 for a little now (tried out MIUI before which was nice but wanted something with a little less bugs.) and mainly the only reason I switched from stock was to test if the battery is any better (been getting similar to stock battery life) and to have a deodexed rom for themes. Also, I've been running my SGS II UC at 500mHz and I had experience no lag at all. Haven't played too many intensive games but, when I played Riptide GP it ran smoothly. Overall to me the main advantage to having a custom rom now (until CM or MIUI are out and stable) are for the themes available to a deodexed rom.
Hope this helps.

CM7 vs Stock Froyo

Hi guys,
It's been a week since I installed CM7.0.3. I think I can write down pros and cons of both roms. By the way I tried dk and joker but didn't find them stable.
Here it goes;
Speed:
CM7 hands down. Butter smooth.
Stock rom isn't too bad but lags 0.2 seconds when opening stuff which is a tad annoying. Also laggy with angry birds. (i don't play games, just tried it for testing)
Stability:
CM7 is good but not as stable as stock froyo. Froyo keeps runing and running. CM7 has crashed 3 times in a week.
Battery life:
I am getting 30 hours with CM7. 55 hours with stock froyo. (same cpu speed)
Common Apps:
This is where stock rom wins as well. CM7 Gmaps and Gtalk fonts really suck.
It may not be a big deal for some users but for me it is a big problem as I use these apps at least 5 times a day.
With stock rom skype is unusable. CM7 wins here if you use hands free option.
Radio: (reception)
I can't tell the difference to be fair. wifi, gps, cell. they all feel the same. Stock gps is definitely more battery friendly.
Customization:
CM7 wins again. Stock froyo is not customizable unless you install shed loads of apps on it.
Conclusion:
CM7 is like an aston martin. If you get one you'll have a big grin on your face. On the other hand you'll spend a lot of time waiting for a recovery van on the side of a motorway.
Then stock froyo must be a good old toyota corolla. It always gets you there. Not in style though...
Haha, good comparison.
I would say battery life is pretty similar, not any significant gains over stock rom though I will tone down the cpu frequency further in standby as I have noticed CM7 is better in this aspect.
I would agree with the majority of your comparison though, nice balanced review.
I get good battery life from CM7, because I use SetCPU and smartly set profiles. (low battery=low cpu clock, screen off=low-ish cpu clock...)

I experienced some problems with setcpu. On low cpu clock setting, when I receive a call it takes 3 rings for the phone to realize it is receiving a call. Which makes me miss lots of calls.
That's a drawback of setting the min speed too low. Which is why I keep it at 245.
BTW, it is not recommended to use SetCPU anymore, because it may clash and cause issues with the default CM Settings. Keeping the governor at Smartass under CM Settings, is equivalent to having a profile in SetCPU for Screen Off.
i like CM7 very much, but with FroYo my battery (with wifi or data on all the time, and juicedeffender) was last for 2 days... now, with wifi (not all day) its like 1 day max.... very disappointing... :\
Nice comparison, I mostly agree to this. I haven't noticed any crashes so far (been using for ~a week now) and my sd card loads faster on reboot.
I really like using CM7, and there's no going back to stock froyo.
I'm running CM7 nightly for quite some time now and I can say it works even better.
Running it overclocked at all times, lasts a day or two depending on how much I stress the phone.
As for camera I flashed the MIUI camera which is a lot better then stock CM7 one, image quality and speed of the app is marvelous.
Just like you said, it's highly customizable; I wouldn't go back to the stock one anytime soon

You can say what you want, but for me, even stock rom is faster than CM7, especially in settings menu (scrolling), but of course applications is a different thing (if you have enough patience to find one)..
CM7 looks dull and takes the punch out of user experience.
Battery life is not a issue if it is more than a day.
Ultimately what sells is user experience and hence hTC Sense wins.
you can't compare stock froyo with aosp gingerbread

Sorry, can't agree with that at all.
You just need to run a benchmark app to see cm7 is way faster than stock even without over clocking.
Not sure what you mean by the second part of your post.

[Q] CM7 vs. MIUI

As both CM7 and MIUI have really matured over the last weeks and samsung is still not able to get to develop a stable gingerbread version I think its time to have a deeper look into the alternatives. What do you think, what is the best solution for the sgs right now? please also post experiences, but really valuable I guess are only experiences with current CM7 or MIUI versions!
Best
Tobi
Samsung gingerbread is as stable, or more, than CM7/MIUI, meaning none is 100% stable, what is your problem...
Samsung roms are better for now
All of them has a special thing...
Now I am using Gelnet Miui rom and it is fantastic an also stable!
You should try it
cm7 and miui are both very fast, even with lagfix on samsung roms you can see minor lags but...
cm7 and miui have bugs that made me go back to samsung custom rom.
the camera does not work even regular picture looks bad sometimes, battery drain in cm7 is also worst than any bug samsung has, if the camera and the battery does not bother you so you can give it a try.
another reason i go back to samsung rom is the brightness change from the notification bar and the swype left for calls in contacts or logs (very usefull while you are driving).

thanks, but may I ask, when you tried out CM7? Ive read, that bettery is now even better lightly than with Sams FW and apparently the camera issues have also been fixed, at least by GALNET...for the swyping contacts i suppose there are alternative contacts apks?

I've just joined CM7 and have had slightly better battery power and no camera issues at all. I'm really impressed with the whole package. I can't imagine going back to stock ROM. Everything is stable and fast.

CM7 is very stable on my phone, better than last official ROM, so I keep it.
I installed both of them on my phone. CM7 had radio problem which didnt work (although there are CM7 radio patch which could be flashed). MIUI had a problem with getting network. Kept getting SOS signal only. Tried flashing 2-3 different MIUI roms and all of them had this problem of no network. Think since there are so many custom roms based on official firmware out there, it makes sense to install them over CM7/MIUI.

are you serious? that sounds awesome, if someone could pls confirm that! the last time i tried miui/cm7 i could just survive the day with massive undervolting and custom kernels which was simply put inacceptable for daily use.. using the same voltage settings on stock roms give me more than 3 days, same usage pattern.

If battery life is your major concern then stick to the one you are happy with
i don't like that my Android seems like an iPhone... no no.. Miui is not for me, it's just a copy (according to me, design is too similar...)
thank you for the pointless thread, which opens a discussion that leads nowhere!
It is similar to the iphone but just think of it as way more customizeable ; im on miui right now and i couldnt be any more satisyfied; lol its gotten so better that their going to make a miui phone... thas something

BUT
besides all the people always telling battery gets better and this might even be the case but the batt is still VERY weak
no comparison to stock rom
I mount the CM7, but now I also had the MIUI, I think the CM7 is better, speed, performance and stability
I tried the latest cm7 nightly a couple weeks ago. It was interesting, but definitely wasnt as smooth and polished as jvq. It also crashed a couple of times. Went back to jvq which I'm happy with for now.

Samsung's Gingerbread vs CyanogenMod7

While I was on CM7 I kept asking myself whether the time was right to switch to "stock" gingerbread in order to get rid of the few CM7 nasties (such as battery life, FM radio, lack of BLN support,...) without giving up too many of the goodies (performance, performance, performance). I hoped there was some insight into objective comparisons, i.e. people who had tested both and could give some "neutral" feedback. Well, I couldn't find it.
So I now find myself on samsung's gingerbread for the first time and these are my findings*:
Performance**:
CM7
The best I've tried so far. No doubt.
Number of installed apps does not affect performance.
JVR
Acceptable, but after getting used to CM7 there is noticeable lag (lapse between gesture and screen reaction) and hiccups when scrolling down menus. Tested with rfs and ext4 ("lagfix"). All in all, performance is noticeably worse than CM7.
Battery***:
CM7
Improves greatly with GB bootloaders [BL] (custom kernel has to support it) but it only affects standby drain (lowers to about 1~3 %/hr).
Usage drain is ridiculous (20~50 %/hr depending on type of use and connectivity).
Typical average battery life has been about 10~24hrs.
JVR
Standby drain is about the same as with CM7 & GB BL (about 1~3 %/hr).
Usage drain is about 10~30% (general feeling about half as draining).
Typical average battery life is being about 15~36hrs.
Android system process shoots CPU usage up to 99.9% while charging (reboot fixes this). Not sure if this is actually a bug.
Miscellaneous:
CM7
No BLN support (as of custom kernels on Aug 15th). No blinking led notification support.
No FM radio (as of #80)
Voodoo sound/color support is kernel dependent
Minor BT car system (A2DP) bugs. Not reproducible with BT dongle.
Horrible Wifi reception and timeouts with WPA2 + hidden SSID (might be custom kernels).
No TV-out support.
No 720p recording (?)
JVR
BLN support is kernel dependent
Voodoo sound/color support is kernel dependent
I might have overseen a bug or been inaccurate at some point. Please feel free to fill the voids or correct any imprecisions.
*I was on CM7 #80 with Zach's Neo kernel v16 r2 (GB BL!). Have also tried Glitch's.
I am now on JVR Simplicity v0.31 (Semaphore kernel 1.5).
**No OC/UV for the sake of fairness of this test (improves performance about 30~50%).
***Battery findings are merely subjective appreciations I have made on a daily usage basis. No scientific mA/h tests or benchmarks have been made. I apologize for that...
This thread should serve for everyone who has tried both ROMs to give their feedback and for those weighing to make the switch to ask questions and have more info.
Cheers!
Nice job on writing this up.
For me CM7 on the SGS is out of the question, because battery and BLN are two of my most importing things that I need daily.
I even went as far as getting the Samsung Armani Battery 1650Mah battery (same physical size as the stock battery) to give me the extra battery life I need.
As for CM7, I may throw that on my Atrix down the road. Some people that have used the beta of it say they think battery life is better than stock. Time will tell, but battery life is an absolute must on my phones which sadly rules CM7 out for me at least on the SGS...
Problems I have with CM7:
* Battery drain (obviously), but since #86 I usually get through the day without recharging.
* Random reboots
* sometimes suddenly loses reception (comes back after some time)
* broken 2g/3g-toggle (don't know if it's fixed yet, didn't dare to try)
Problems I have with stock-ROMs:
* often Launcher-redraws
* no USB-tethering on Linux
Problems I have with all GB ROMs:
* GPS-performance is bad. It's usable after applying hardware fix, but when comparing with Froyo ROMs (e.g. Darky 9.5), they always win.
You can get led notifications with Neo's kernel, v17r5 currently. No need for BLN app. :]
Otherwise, CM7 is just smoking the stock ROM, specially if many apps are installed. I can compare the phone to AOSP Desire experience, before I exchanged it for SGS a month ago.
Btw, Green battery saver app helps alot, it turns off wifi/mobile for specified intervals, so less drain when idle and you don't need to manually toggle it. Same **** as iPhone does.
I have messed both with CM7 #80 and JVR. Now I am back to stock JVR because CM7:
- does not support 720p recording
- I had a lot of issues with calling, the other person couldn't hear me. This seems to happen randomly to many users and makes it for me unusable.
There's HD recording @ 30fps on 2 recent nightlies I tried.

In my experience there is a great improvement in flash performance in cm7 (and decline in samsung's gb). Especially in flash video playback. Beware though not to expect anything similar to computer-like performance in this field.
You want a fast, smooth UI and not expect a drawback in battery use? There has got to be a sacrificial lamb in there. The fact that idle drain is already comparable with stock roms means there is no more "battery drain" issue in CM7.
I left CM7 with fugumod kernel overnight, I lost 2% battery in 9 hours.
I left Simplicity overnight. I lost 10% in 9 hours.
Just my findings off of one test
Nice Job
Thank you for your interesting info

for me, flash is crazy good since jvq and flash update. 720p fluid in the browser. silky smooth scrolling, gpu helps a lot.
Quite accurate but:
-wifi for me is horrible on stock and cm7...compared the galaxy s my old iphone 3gs was much better.
-battery when phone is on use is same on cm7 and stock... 'till you use data connection. When using 2g/3g on cm7, battery goes down like a hell.
This because samsung driver are closed source i suppose.
Imho Gingebread is not a great update respect froyo.
Just switched back to stock rom from cm7 nightly. I really liked cm's features but after a while the battery drain was too much.

I wondered if JVR was better but its probably not much better than jvq. For me, i think i can live with the 'drawbacks' of CM7 as it just makes the phone as good as it should be - fast as hell.
Interestingly enough, as you can see from my sig im posting from a galaxy tab. The stock sammy firmware on this is much better on this than most stock sgs roms.

I have to say that I was the same (and I still like to switch roms) but JVR is like from a different dev team at Samsung. I am talking about stock JVR. Give it a try and you will see that it is the perfect stock rom.
My issue with CM7 are the colours. Both on stock and Voodoo. There is something about it that I can't get right even after following a few guides here.
Having said that, CM7 is a very good, features rich, fast rom. I don't think any stock rom would get to that speed due to the filesystem difference.
K.
It's interesting that nobody mentions the problem during calls. Is this an isolated problem, happening to only a few of us ?
I am very very impatient when it comes to responsiveness so I'm on CM7 for a while. Hoever, most likely, I will go back to stock because of:
-problems during calls (other person can't hear me - hold-unhold call sometimes fixes this, sometimes not)
- headset controlls not working (can't answer calls, can't control music); very annoying, this was introduced when a fix for FM radio was tried. FM radio still does not work but it managed to screw up the headset controls
- no 720p recording - well, you CAN record but the frames skip a lot and audio is not synced
- when using 3g/h battery goes down REALLY fast and phone heats up a LOT
- last but not least devs are concentrating on SGS2, so any fixes will probably take a long while to be implemented (if there's gonna be any fixes); the development has slowed a lot (still, my thank to the devs for their hard work)
The grass is always greener on the other side, is it? I love CM for its pure android experience, its speed and the control. But yes, there are bugs and that's to be expected if you have to work with closed source blob's and pretty weird hardware (search for atinm's post in the CM7 thread). I'm willing to live with the remaining bugs because the advantages of CM7 are just to big. But my next phone is going to be a Nexus one for sure. That's the only way I'm guaranteed a real android phone without any of the OEM crap.
Jvr odexed with a few fixes is best for me. Camera, colours, no radio and battery drain just not good enough on cm7 for my needs.
Stock Samsung jvr is better than my cm7 2.2.4 nexus one.

short [REVIEW] CM 7.1 RC1 vs Stock 2.3.4 regarding performance and battery life

So, I'm toying with the idea of flashing CM7.1 RC1 to my i9020t
currently it's on stock 2.3.4 + netarchy stable, it runs very smooth like silk after some manual optimization.
most games runs really nice, but there are still a few that are laggy, so i was planning to check out CM7.1 RC1 to see if it runs any better.
However, there were old reports of issues with the CM7 and missing features, etc, etc, or some other that reported CM7 being even slower than 2.3.4 stock, so i'm not so sure if i want to spend all that time flashing stuff around
I only flash stable version of ROMs as i have limited free time, and can't really afford to be jumping back and forth between versions, as the little mods and tweaks, and customization takes several hours most of the time, and it's very time consuming, yet not something i can afford in a busy day.
It just happens today is a nice day to flash a ROM
anyways... here goes nothing...
starting with a Nandroid Backup before I mess around with CM7.1
the stability is not at the same level. With CM7, my phone would reboot on it's own every other day. Car home would lock the screen rotation, requiring a reboot. some of the features are nice, like the per permission restricting of apps. The debug code being enabled will cause (for me anyways) a heavier battery drain. I prefer stock with root.
I'm retesting CM7 because of the failure of 2.3.6 to fix a major bug and in the process introduce more issues. I'll probably role back to 2.3.4.
Sent from my Nexus S
i finally got time to flash it today, so i'll keep an eye on it for the next few days, to see how stable or unstable it is
CM 7.1 RC1 + netarchy 1.3.7 cfs @ 1300
and also i'll have to keep an eye on the battery drain
the stock 2.3.4 + netarchy was very good
REVIEW conclussion
so far only 1 non-random reboot, it was actually caused by an app, that was force closed.
however performance wise, as i feared, CM7.1 RC1 is quite a bit slower than stock 2.3.4
Games laggs way more in CM7.1 RC1 than on stock, even with all the CM7.1 eye candies and customization disabled / enabled it was the same result.
Also battery life was extremely bad!, as in you can actually see the % numbers drop in front of your eyes, as you run Apps / Games on the phone even with the charger plugged in!
on stock the numbers will go up, not down, when the charger is plugged.
yes, this pretty much means, i'll be going back to stock sometimes later today when i get some time to re-flash the whole thing again.
I'll be looking forward to try CM7.1 final / stable when and if all the CM team have settle up with their daily life to go back to normal and make the project go forward again, until then, i'm not planning to waste more time with CM7.1
Don't give up until you've run it with the Trinity TUV10 kernel.
hmm... it's worth a shot
heck might as well, lets see how the CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity plays together.
according to what i read already on the topic, seems like it'll be a disaster for battery life
but if performance is good and fluid, i think i can over look that.
Trinity Kernel conclussion
well CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity TUV10 certainly makes a much better combo than Netarchy
using Trinity, even the heaviest of games runs smooth without jitters (very important for racing games, or shooting games)
the most impressive thing is that it's doing all that at stock clock speed of 1 Ghz while Netarchy at 1.3 Ghz was struggling.
Unfortunately on the Battery side of things, it's still just as power hungry as any other custom ROMs, although not as bad as Netarchy.
well... i guess i'll be hanging on to CM7 RC1 for a while longer, at least things are playable now
Poor battery life is a common complain after flashing a new ROM (and wiping 9 months of battery stats). Give it a few days to rebuild the battery history, and see if it's more to your liking.
I would try one of the newer nigthlies they are quite better than rc1
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
the nightlies are better than RC1, that is for sure. a lot more work has been done since RC1. also, i recommend the latest Trinity TEUV kernel--> http://goo.gl/roLqV its at 880mhz, feels like 1.2ghz, its gpu is overclocked to 240mhz, and its undervolted. so its very fast and its great on your battery life. and it goes well with the latest cm

Question, if I install a CM7 nightlies ROM or a different ROM and wanna install a kernel like Trinity and then do a nandroid backup after that I'd be able to do it even if I installed a ROM besides CM7 like NSCollab or SuperCM7 right? And how would the order go, wipe > flash rom > flash kernel > do nandroid backup before restarting the phone? Thanks.
In my experience the RC version of. M7 is much less buggier than nightlies. I'd get random reboots, apps freaking out and BA battery life. Been on cm7 RC for 3 days now with not a single reboot. I'm also using the stock kernel that comes with it.

And I do feel like CM7 RC1 on my Nexus S is slower than CM7 on my MT4G for whatever reason...I honestly just don't get that and friggin why...it's the friggin S and a Hummingbird in there, it can't be that much worse if it is then the 2nd gen 1ghz Snapdragon in the MT4G. My MT4G was blazing fast and had nice battery life in regards to an Android phone...but ugh CM7 on my S is kinda laggy sometimes and battery life is a disaster. I need a reccomendation for a really fast vanilla ROM to flash. Always loved CM and it's never disappointed me until now. I just don't get it, I mean I thought the battery life on my Nexus One was terrible but it's draining even faster on my S.

The most stable out there .. not on the performance side or customization but smooth and stable as hell

Custom ROMs - sharing a beginner's experience

As a long time Android user and general nerd, I often hear from some of my friends about new and cool custom ROMs. It ranges from "amazing customization" to "blazing speed" and even "far better than anything stock in general".
So this weekend I decided that since my warranty is no longer valid anyway, and Samsung won't be updating the Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 anymore, I can go ahead and try something new and shiny, which could help me with my job.
And thus began my research and tests on Android custom ROMs...and oh boy, that was one hell of an experience.
Everything I heard from people about nearly everything was shattered right then and there.
As a reasonable person, I decided to try some of the more popular ROMs, trying to stick as much as possible to stable builds since everyday use is a big deal for me. So now I present to you, my experience with what I was told are the top-dogs of the custom ROM world and my impressions of each:
Omni 4.4.2
This one actually surprised me in terms of it's video driver. As some might know, a bunch of Gameloft published games always show washed out colors on the Galaxy S2, but when used, this ROM showed the correct colors...quite shocking! ...however, it turned out to be highly unstable with apps crashing left and right all the time and often for no real reason. This ROM is not really advertised as "stable" so I guess that was understandable, so I decided to move on.
MIUI v5
This ROM was just impressive. I absolutely love the UI (and I didn't even try the customization stuff, yet I say that!). It seemed really stable and I almost decided to stick with it...until I found out that 3 apps in particular I very much rely on don't work properly or at all (overlay issues it seems). This got me really disappointed but I figured functionality is more important than looks so once again, I decided to move on.
CyanogenMod 10.3.1
This might be the biggest disappointment for all the wrong reasons. The buildup and hype I got from people about it created in my head "the ultimate ROM"...but after installing it and doing some tests...I have to say, the performance difference was just barely noticeable and i all honesty, not worth the trade for the bugs it also brings (although if it had the video driver from Omni I would've changed my mind). I really wanted to do a fair judgement since I know this is the top-dog of ROMs (or at least in popularity) so I even ran tests on it...and in games, the framerate difference between stock and CM10.3 was just 2-5fps.
Resurrection Remix 4.0.7
This was...let me just say it out loud - the installation for this ROM should be a standard - just incorporate some stuff and have people chose what to get or don't get. Having stock stuff and then 10 additional flashable ZIPs while not really a big issue is just a time-waster for a lot of people in my eyes (although it would've been nice to know more about the modems when it asks you for a choice). Anyway, this ROM's keyboard just refused to work so I got rid of it after 2 flashes.
ReVolt JB 4.5
...keyboard didn't work on this one again, and after another 2 flash attempts, I scrapped it aswell.
At this point I pretty much just gave up and went back to the Samsung stock ROM for my region and was left with an empty feeling that custom ROMs all seem to have at least one or more huge flaws.
All the buildup and "legends" (lacking a better term) weren't even close to what I experienced (except the MIUI...well, UI) and it got me thinking...are custom ROMs meant for everyday users or they were always aimed at people willing to experiment? Personally, I decided that my journey through the custom ROM world has ended here at least for the time being (maybe someday I'll go back to MIUI but who knows), but I wanted to ask, does anyone feel the same way I do? That custom ROMs, while a really cool thing to be able to have is getting overhyped to the point where unless you really know what you're getting into will lead to just disappointment?
I would really like to hear other people's views on this, especially if you're not an expert user.
NeatROM rulez, give it a try.

Resurrection Remix 4.0.7 worked fine for me. the only problem is the System UI that usually crashes when you messed up on something and it really need some reboot for that. ☺

Well, with custom roms comes both bugs and extended capacities.
First of all, having a rooted phone gives a lot of new possibilities.
Besides, custom roms give new content, like the latest android updates, which the constructors take time to port to their devices.
At last but not least, custom ROMs often let you.. customize as much as thou wish
I'm personally using Cyanfox (android 4.4), and I'm pretty happy about it

I actually just root my stock ROM with the SuperSU flashable ZIP-thingie...though I only need it for a firewall ^-^;;
But to me one of the biggest deal-breakers is how all the ROMs I did like don't support MHL (if only MIUI was capable of that )
Since the warranty is gone i'm trying a bunch of roms to sede what nave to offer. So far i've only tried the omnirom and it's pretty good to me, except some minor bugs.
In my opinion you've to choose a stabile ROM if you don't want any problems
im using cm10.1 stable linaro build most nearly perfect rom for me.

That's kind'a the thing, CM 10.3.1 is the one shown as stable and it seems to be...but it's missing features that the stock ROMs offer, and the performance difference is pretty much not noticeable enough to justify it for me.
All the ROMs except Omni were shown as "stable" but as i mentioned in my first post, all seem to have at least 1 big issue.
As a side question...I heard the newest version of MIUI actually had MHL/TV-out support on the S2...anyone know if that's true?
Dorimanx anybody ... ?
I only use my phone for basic stuff. So I just use a stock rom with a custom kernel. That way, everything works and I dont have to read 2000 posts to see what problems to expect.
Stock CM kernel isn't all that great IMO , Try coupling Dorimanx's kernel with CM or any other ROM... Adds a lot of power features with stability. stock Sammy Roms feel very caged and unoptimized thus the need for custom builds. Give it time... It grows on you eventually.
Just my 2cents

After 2 years of trying to find a custom ROM that doesn't have one show-topping bug, I feel bad for not just staying with a nicely optimized stock ROM with a tweaked kernel that is 100% dependable when I need it.
So, +1 :good:
Well, I only recently got the S2. Before my S2, I've owned an HTC One V. The stock ROM on that thing was just a mess. It came with 4.0.4 ICS and... you guessed it... no update to JB. So I installed a custom ROM on that one... it improved nearly everything.
So, from my experiences with that device, I thought I could flash the S2 and get the same experience. And... well, not really. I have tried so many ROMs...
The AOSP based ROMs either drain battery like hell or have any other bug which is so impacting that I can't deal with it. For example, the Audio 50% bug. Just one word: Annoying.
SO, I could stay with a Samsung stock ROM, but well, that won't be an option for me. Why not? Simple, on the stock rom, using my phone for an hour, literally ONE HOUR, the thing is completely dead. Battery empty. The only stock rom which gives me two and half an hour of screen on time is the 2.3.3 GB stock. And well, that's a bit old nowadays.
The by far best combination for power, speed, stability and battery life for me is CM10.1 stable with the DorimanX 9.14 kernel. I've tried it once and I find myself going back to it pretty much everytime I flashed any ROM I do not like.
Currently I'm on CM11 unofficial nightly, tomorrow I will see for how long my battery can last. I know, my battery is probably broken, but it's not thicker than normal or something like that. It just drains and I have no idea why.

I get up to 14 days with my battery if it's just on Standby [no actual use] and up to a full day if I play some games on it with the Stock ROM.
Also I wanted to mention that I tried DorimanX 8.43 earlier today and my god, my phone became unstable as hell [still on a stock ROM]...odd.
But yeah, you might want to get a new battery if you get less than 16 hours battery life
Hello. I want share my experience. I moved from stock because i want try 4.2 new features, specially widget on lockscreen.
I first tryied cm 10.2 but battery drained quickly and gaming was so sloooow.I tryied then cm10.2 linaro but experienced 4-5 reboot a day. Now I'm back on cm10.2 hoping that the guy working on exynos drivers will bring good news. In the meanwhile I will try gustavo or apolo kernel that seems the most stable kernels

I can say that i have installed allmost all posible ROMs. For me every rom whit verson of android above 4.1.2 just didn't work ( i have SD CARD problems in most of the ROM's in other i have encored camera problems or bootloops ) The only ROM working realy good is snapdragon and s4fors2 .
IF ANY ONE KHNOWS HOW TO SOLVE MY SD-CARD PROBLEMS ON ANY ROM WITH ANDROID VERSION ABOVE 4.1.2 PM me PLS
CyanFox Rom is the most stable and worked for me as well. Give it a try!!
For Battery Backup, maybe you can use Voltage Control Pro App, Underclock to 1 GHZ if you are not a hardcore gamer. You can also decrease voltage, more Options over mv are also available in Pro Version, Decreasing Voltage will help lower power consumption of CPU.
You can also install Siyah Latest Kernel and do all of this using S-Tweaks!
Thanks!
@hellco what exactly is your sd card problem?? Can you elaborate??
