So recently my M8 has decided to degrade a lot faster than a typical Android phone would, so I'm looking for an upgrade. Considering I'm still a college student, I can't make sense of spending over $500 just for a phone. I recently saw a few models (64GB and 128GB) for under $400, but would anyone still recommend buying this phone in 2017? The bootloop issue keeps me from pulling the trigger. I would rather not purchase another phone that I'm gonna want to throw at a wall only a few months into owning it.

If you can get a NEW model 64GB for a great price, then yeah. In the US, Walmart is selling a new 32GB model for $365. The phone is still fast as hell, runs 8.0 and gets monthly security updates. Ongoing community support is guaranteed for a LONG time. :good:
I used my 6P for about a year without any issues but I can't recommend it to those that need a reliable phone. Definitely wouldn't pay anywhere near $400. Just too many potential issues and there's better options in that price range. I bought my 64 GB gold 6P over a year ago for about $400 but had other options (5x and 6) if it had boot loop or battery issues. Now I have the 3T and will probably sell the 6P.

Yea I'm still weary of the bootloop. The phone I found was an official refurb from Google, but still, if it's unreliable even afterwards, I'd rather spend the extra money now so I don't have to spend even more later.
BTW I would prefer to buy one that works on all four networks. Currently on Sprint (hot garbage) but I'm looking to move to T-Mobile after I graduate.
My Pixel XL died and I picked up the Nexus 6P.
It's 95% as fast as the Pixel XL.
Apps do open faster on the Pixel, but the difference is negligible.
I never realized I'd be this happy with the 6P.
My only issue is premature battery failure.
I'd budget $25 to get a replacement battery if you're comfortable doing it yourself.
If not, then budget a lot more, or get a better phone.

Can't see any reason to replace it. if the only issue I'll have in the future is the battery than I'll simply replace it and keep using it.
It got a 2K AMOLED screen , 2Ghz big cluster and 1550 little cluster CPU, 3 Gb RAM.. can't see any reason to replace it by now.

I still think it's very worthy phone even in 2017. It's my all time favorite Android phone. I've owned it twice now. I as of about 4 days ago just bought another Nexus 6p from an individual who had bought it from Google but never even opened it up. It had just been sitting in the box unopened at his house for the past two years. Although I really wanted the silver, the one he had was 64g and in frost white. When he told me what he'd sell it to me for I went into shock. I bought a brand new 64g Nexus 6p for $150!!! Sealed in box never even turned on. This phone is butter smooth. The screen is amazing. It's great for media. Runs the very latest software from Google. I like it tens times better than the Pixel. The Pixel is absolutely ugly and it's not even a true XL at 5.5 inches where the 6p is 5.7 which I would consider that to be an XL. The phone design thanks to Huawei is stunning. So yeah if you can find one in the original box at the right price that was purchased from Google in case you do need a replacement then I'd say definitely yes to getting one. Don't let the boot loop scare you. Although it happens it's not to the majority of the phones. You only hear of the bad apples and not the good ones. Well mine is perfect although it was brand new it's still two yesrs old just never opened up and my battery is fine. Just do your research and ask questions and get you one. You won't regret it. This phone is by far the best and most smooth Android phone I've ever used. It's definitely at the right price very worth buying even in 2017. I believe it will get updates until late 2018 so you're good there too. Like I said research it and definitely fine one that comes in the original box with the contents. It'll help your resell value down the road.

Don't do it... Worst build quality ever, it's essentially made out of tin foil
Until the Google Pixel dual partition phones get Xposed working, I'm sticking with the 6P.
Even TWRP doesn't backup/restore reliably for Pixel dual partition setup yet.
My 6P has RR and Xposed for Nougat working just right and I'm not letting that go.
I have my 6p for over a year now and to be honest I am not happy In 2017 you would end up much better with OnePlus 5 that has similar performance to iPhone 8 and much better than Samsung Galaxy 8. Nexus 6p is way behind them now
The "frame" (thin plastic around the screen) goes off quickly and it looks quite bad and the body is made of soft metal so you would have a lot of tiny holes and few scratches after few months (and drops). Battery is good though, after a year still holds about 95% (due to AccuBattery app) and performance itself is neither bad or good.
No it's not a good buy. You want a phone to last long look elsewhere. You might get lucky and get a good model or you might get one that has one of the many issues that plagues these phones. Go for a one plus 3T
I absolutely love mine. expect to replace the battery at some point, but other than that, I think it's still a relevant phone in 2017. buy it if you see it cheap.

I have an offer of a great condition Nexus 6p for 225. Should I? Any idea how common the batt/loop issues are?

Swappa has v2O for 250-300.
My 6P has been great for over a year but I wouldn't buy even a cheap 6P unless I didn't need it to be a reliable phone. My 6P is now used as a backup.

No. Short battery life, lag and overheating, very poor build, terrible support from Huawei. I would avoid it personally

When this phone came out, I SUPER wanted one bad, but pretty glad I avoided it, if what I've read online is truly a common thing and not just a vocal minority. (I tried to see if I could find actual failure stats/percentages, but nothing concrete.)
And yeah, I looked at swappa, but I'm one of those "must be in my hand to inspect before I spend" guys, online purchase of expensive used electronics makes me nervous.
Found an LG V20 for ~200 this morning, but its a bit of a drive. Might do it...

Glad to help out. I try not to fanboy out on any phone I own, and be honest about the good and the bad. XDA can be the worst place to ask for advice about buying phones honestly. People will say anything is good.
I keep mine around to play around with and test android updates. It hasn't been my main phone in a while though.

Hi, i'm an Atrix owner, and my dad's phone just died, so i thought that i could buy a new phone for me and give my atrix to him. It will have more than he can use anyway.
So, i'm trying to go with the best for under $300 (unlocked). I suffered the Motorola's lack of updates with my Milestone and this Atrix, so i want a futureproof device (balanced with the price). So my first thought of course is the Nexus. If it gets 5.0 i'll be happy for another year i guess.
But i don't know what's in the market right now, so maybe i'm missing another good device for the price, or maybe the Nexus 4 is not as good as it looks. So that's why i'm asking what the title says.

I gave my old lady my old Atrix and grabbed the Nexus.
Now I'm trying to talk her in to getting one.
The price now @ $249 to performance ratio can't be beat considering you own the phone out right, no contract crap.
Get updates on day 1 release, it will get 5.0
The camera is decent enough I find...after all it's a phone.
If you don't care about the lack of a SD card and a non removable battery. Then it's def worth it
After the Atrix you'd be very happy with it.
I'd get a case for it the as it's an extremely slippery phone though.
If you're on a budget and looking for unlocked and properly priced, then yes, it's perfect. You don't get 4G LTE out of the box, and you only get it with fixes and always changing the settings back. If not having 4G LTE is fine, then yes, it's your best bet. MetroPCS and Boost are selling the SIII for $400 still. You still get a year warranty of course when you buy it from Google.

I got mine the other day. Coming from a GS3, I am more then happy with the N4. Will I get an N5 when it comes up, most likely but depending on the price maybe not as soon as it is released.
My wife picked up a HTC One. Spec wise and quality build that is on the HTC One is top of the line right now but I would not take one over the N4. There is just something special about a Nexus device and it runs fantastic.

I would but just because of the value. For $200-$300 you get a great unlocked phone. It isn't the best phone but it definitely is for the price range. It definitely does have it quirks though. For one I hate the fact that I am limited to 16gb of storage as there is no SD Card slot. Google however has great cloud based apps so you really don't need 64gb. For me, I have 30+ GB of music and its all on the cloud with Google play. Even when your offline you still have access you your music though because the app very conveniently caches songs periodically to keep some stored locally (I have about 2gb local). The screen is not full 1080p which is becoming the norm now and not to forget the phone has horrible color calibration, which can be fixes with a custom kernel. The phones battery life also isn't the greatest... As a pretty heavy user I probably would have to charge it at least once throughout the day. The camera also is pretty crappy and so is the speaker.
Bottom line. The phone is definitely worth every cent but it does have its issue. There are plenty of phones better than it but they're all $600+ phones. So yes even today, I would say to Stoll get it for the value

I just ordered mine last week when the price dropped. I have been using the Galaxy Nexus for the last year and will likely never purchase another non-Nexus device ever again.
For me, it was all about value. As others have mentioned - it is pretty hard to beat the current 199/249 price point that these are available at right now. I had originally planned on holding off until the N5 was released but simply couldn't pass up this deal.
Now just anxiously waiting for it to arrive!

My nexus 5 gave up on recognizing sim card and now its time to buy one. Today I was looking on Amazon for my new phone and I came across zenfone 2 for $199, is this a good deal? How do you compare with nexus 5? How good is this on T-Mobile network? Any other recommendation for any other phone under $250?
ZF2 is better than Nexus 5. But if I were you I would wait the Nexus 5 2015. Which is going to release 2 or 3 months. Probably. But If you say that I can not wait till the new nexus arrives than go and buy a ZF2.

Since they said the phone doesn't see the SIM card anymore, I doubt they can wait.
Another inexpensive option would be the Moto G 2015 model. It looks great for the price also. The ZenFone 2 is nice (but I'd spend the extra $100 for the next model up with better processor, more RAM and more storage).

I absolutely love this phone, everyone seems to complain about the battery but for me it's fine. The quick charge resolves having to wait if your battery is drained.
Bang for the buck, hands down the ZF2, you won't find a phone with these specs at that price not to mention the dual-sim feature. I have two Moto G 3rd Gens, they are nice and battery is better but still no contest compared to my ZF2. Also, Asus has been pretty good at releasing firmware updates so that's a good sign.
Don't forget, forums always contain mostly negative comments so it's hard to base your decision on reading. Most people with positive comments don't really post their experience unless you're a tech junky like me

Agreed, I actually like the bloatware in this phone, they are somewhat useful, pclink is great. At least Asus gave us the option to turn them off in "autostart" more then what I can say for most other companies/couriers. Tools and rom can be changed, so I'm not too worry that Asus will improve on those.
I'm with anyone here I love this phone but buy a case as I have the higher end model and it's costing me 200CAD to replace the screen

Sorry, I don't understand, you want to buy a case or your screen broke? please clarify. That's norm for screen damage repair, cost the same for S5 or Iphones, wait til you see what it cost to replace a S6 Edge phone.... ouch.

Ah, gotcha lol yeah, screen replacement on any smartphone these days is not cheap.
I'm waiting for the 5.1 update or CM12 before I buy this phone. My current mobile is still working fine for basic functionality, so I can afford to wait
I have an HTC One which I'm looking to replace anytime soon because the battery is slowly dying. My first choice is the Zenfone2 64gb w/ 4gb ram next would be the Moto G 2015. I no longer want a flagship as they become obsolete after a year plus mid-range devices has a lot to offer nowadays. Seems like a lot of phone manufacturers are now targeting the mid-range area offering a great range of powerful phones at a cheaper price.
One thing that's holding me back in buying the Zenfone 2 is it was made by Asus. I have a Nexus 7 2013 which is no more than a year old with lots of issues like the unresponsive touchscreen, multi-touch issues, broken auto-rotate. All of which are experienced by a lot of Nexus 7 owners. What I couldn't handle is the nightmare of going thru Asus's after sales service.
Is there anyone here kind enough to give their insights about the current issues they have on this phone? I've read somewhere that battery life is an issue. Any defective batches/hardware issues or anything around that line that I should know before actually deciding to get this phone? As much as possible, I don't want to go thru their customer service ever again.

I ordered one for a relative (16GB/2GB Ram version) and its been fine so far. If you look through this forum and at reviews the main areas where the phone is lacking are the battery life (can be poor but generally inconsistent), not a great camera and the additional bloat apps that come preinstalled (some can be uninstalled or disabled or if you root you can remove them all together/freeze them).
I think all handsets have the odd bad batch here and there and there are some who are unlucky where they have a fault that means they have to return the device. I think if the battery life was sorted, it would help ease a lot of fears and make a lot of users more content. It can vary from person to person and it might not even bother you. Fingers crossed it can be improved in the next major update.
The new Motorola G looks decent, still waiting to see more in depth reviews but it seems to be getting good reports in the battery department. If I was buying it I would have to go for the 16GB/2GB ram model as 8GB is just not enough anymore, 16GB is just about manageable. Motorola should also provide decent updates I've been pretty tempted to get the 64GB/4GB ram Zenfone 2 myself, I dont particularly need an new device but it just seems such an attractive offer. I currently have a Oneplus One which is great and has the benefit of having an unlockable bootloader and plenty of roms to choose from. Currently I have switched back to a CM11(kitkat) rom for the best battery life as Lollipop just doesnt seem as good, so it doesnt just seem to be a problem specific to the Zenfone 2.
I'm not sure how much my rambling has helped, but at the moment I'm just hanging tight for now and scouring XDA every other day to see how things pan out for the ZF2! :silly:

The phone itself is fine. I like the fast-charging feature, and the battery is definitely better than my Nexus4, and it's pretty snappy (I have the 2GB version).
BUT, and this is a big but, Asus' customer support is just plain awful:
My 1-month-old phone started doing random shutdowns at least once a day (it won't even turn itself back on, I would manually turn it on again after noticing my phone's been off for the past 2 hours). After multiple emails back and forth they issued an RMA and I had to send the phone at my expense. Phone got back 10 days later, result? the issue is still there, and they're still avoiding sending me a replacement.
In my opinion buy from a company that respect their customer and replace their faulty phone, like what Google did for my Nexus 4.
Coming from an iPhone 6 (Originally all Android) and going to this phone, I'd have to say I love it... I may not be in love with it, but I love it Everything is pretty smooth, the camera is good for a phone camera (I've taken some really good outside video with it), and the expandable storage is great with an already large size internal storage. I'd say to anyone who is on the fence to buy it. Yes it's not an iPhone, but it's also not iOS.

To start of with has anyone bought one yet. It was only released here 3 days ago.
I'm very likely to buy one before Christmas, unless miracle happens and Moto Z Force is sold outside of Verizon.

Yes I did, probably could have gotten it for less elsewhere/online but couldn't be bothered waiting as my current phone is in poor shape.
I got one from Harvey Norman on Friday, got it down to $667. I've bought loads of phones and electronics stuff from overseas before, thought I'd get this locally because I've never had an issue so surely my luck will run out.
Incredible battery, great reception, Moto Display will not function at all even after factory resets but on the other hand, it's not distracting me flashing/breathing so I'm not too fussed about it. Feels like a house brick, l'm happy with it. People reckon the low light camera is crap. It's certainly not on par with say, an S7, but it's not as bad as people reckon.

Good to know, I might get one this weekend! I really like this phone but $699 is a bit too expensive for me. The exact same model (Dual sim with same LTE bands) is only AUD480 from Amazon Mexico.

And you're right, the HTC 10 is at JB for $899 right now, which is a lot more phone for the money, and I very nearly got that instead, but decided I wanted the big battery. Try and talk them down a bit, they'll try and get extended warranty out of you for $120 or whatever though.
Like I said, sooner or later my luck would run out with these overseas purchases, but I've got a family now, I need a phone and I can't be stuffed with overseas warranty processes if it came to that. Everyone's different, I think Clove has them pretty cheap as well.

I am currently using both phones. The Nexus 6P is so attractive due to latest software and features, especially with developer previews, but the Moto Z Play has been fantastic. I am a medium user, but with whatever optimization they have going the battery life is phenomenal! Off of the first charge I got over 4 days with 8+ hours screen time. Haven't noticed any performance hiccups but I am not a gamer. Received the phone on Friday and just charged it again this morning, Wednesday.
So the choice amounts to latest software faster or best battery life (at least that I have experienced on Android) ever.

Nexus 6P sort of renewed my interest with 7.0, but battery life has taken a turn for the worse, so yeah that's that. I guess I just need a change now, and MZP seems to be the best in price-range to be my daily driver for the next 12 months
I am curious though, are you evaluating yourself, which one you will keep in the long run ?
Just received my moto z play from HN for $660 (had $300 worth of gift cards so effectively paid $360). Worth trying to haggle with them now since both Officeworks and Good Guys also sells them and they sell the white models to boot unlike HN who only sells the Black model.

check for battery measurements when you first get the phone and check again after you have reviewed other details, just cause you wouldn't wanna get stuck with a phone that has a bad battery ( which might happen cause of the early shut off issues reported here ) if it is a bad battery you can buy an after market one and that will fix the issue but you can sway seller for a better price
check the volume and power buttons and ensure that it has click and are fully functional
check head phone jack for audio
check charger port for any damage
ask seller if it has the early shut down issue and if so since when and at what percentage does it do it on.
ask seller if he has orignal proof of purchase he can provide so in case of a warranty claim you can get a hold of that POP which he can black out as all they need is a picture of the receipt .
make sure to ask where the device was purchased from.
does the screen work fine?? go on google.com and see if theres any abnormalities against the white back ground.
do the speakers work>>?
how about the cameras??
does it make phone calls with no mic or headset issues?

TBH, I wouldn't buy a 6P. Many of them are having battery issues right now, and unless it still has warranty support and/or was purchased from the Google store, it will be really annoying. May I ask what you'll be paying for it? That may change my mind, but I would wait for the G6, S8 or the Pixel to drop and get one of those instead.
I've loved my 6P, but it's now outdated since Google isn't really supporting it anymore with the Pixel out and the widespread battery issues.

If you install an app like AccuBattery you can't really measure battery health until you run the phone and do a charge. I've had zero serious issues with my 8 month old 6P but some people have had problems with early battery shutdown, random reboots and the as bad as it sounds boot loop of death. You are taking a chance buying a used 6P as the failure rate for these phones is much worse than it should be. At least one person reported that his early shutdown issue went away after the March update. This is obvious but make sure the phone is unlocked and has any lockscreen security disabled before you purchase it. People have claimed to have purchased locked phones that they couldn't get into on Swappa. I would reboot the phone and see if everything boots up ok and play some music through the speakers. There's not really much you can do beforehand to tell if the phone is a lemon. You are basically relying on the honesty of the seller to disclose if there are problems are not. You definitely want to verify that the phone is up and running before handing over any money. Good luck.

that is quite a bit tbh. You could probably get a used s7 edge for that amount.
6p is nice but build quality isn't all that great. I got screen burn in pretty quickly too (from the soft keys), which I've never had on any phone before.
Find out the manufacturing date
I wouldn't buy a used 6P without any warranty. Just too many potential issues.

290 for a one year 6P but 32, 64 or 128GB?
The price of used and new 6P have increased like crazy (for reference https://keepa.com/#!product/1-B019TWO6WM). I bought my 32GB 350 euros (EU is generaly more expensive) in August last year.
I love it but it's only 8 months old and there are 2 problems that affect some users after around 1y:
1/ early battery degradation with a workaround to buy and change the battery. You can calibrate the battery and check with accubattery how much it reports. Under 2700mAh the battery is officially considered End Of Life by the OEM
2/ the other is boot loop of death with no known workaround. You have a 290$ brick.
I wouldn't put more than 200 on a 32GB. And knowing the potential problems mentioned above, I'm not even sure I would by a 1y 6P.

It's supposed to be a really good phone, I would definitely get one
I bought a brand new 6P 3 weeks ago ($500) and haven't looked back or regretted. It's still really one of the top Android phones most specifically from an Android development perspective. Octos ROM with Flash kernel with substratum mods is all I need at the moment to make this thing what I need.
Maybe in several months or a year the battery gets shot, but by then I'll be ready to move on to a new device. This was to replace my Nexus 6 which I almost literally hacked to death, killed the battery. The Verizon Pixel can't be unlocked-rooted now, so the 6P was my choice. If you get a non-Verizon Pixel and want to root, then maybe that's the device to get. Huge bezel though - ouch can't get over that and the Iphone-like hardware.

IPhone hardware is great though. When you hold it it feels like a very premium device. Apple and Samsung are making the most consistent and well made phones imo. I like both personally. Even if you hate apple, there is no denying they do a good job on the hardware. So many phones have large bezels, however that will be a thing of the past soon enough.
That being said, the 6p is a great phone no doubt and I don't think anyone said otherwise. For the money he is spending though he could afford something better imo.
It was great for the price, it is nearing EOL though

From what I've read, 7.1.1 Verizon Pixel XL bootloader cannot be unlocked as of earlier this month, but perhaps that's changed recently.

Yep, that's why i didn't get it since I'm on Verizon. And didn't want to spend so much $$$ for a device with hardware and form that didn't work for me. Can you imagine a google phone that you can't mod? Nope. :silly:
I'm on my G3 right now -- happily using a rooted stock-based ROM from our very own XDA. My battery life has been decreasing a while now for years, so I think it's just time to replace my phone.
I was excited for the Pixel 2's, but all the screen problems have me worried. I think I've narrowed down my choices to:
Pixel 2
Moto Z2 Force
S8
Essential Phone, with the Price Drop
So I'm wondering which do you think I should get? This is on Verizon btw. I'm really torn and love my G3 so I'm really hesitant to get fully convinced to buy one.
Pixel 2: Better camera, fastest android update and "exclusive" features. Many of which you can install apps to get those feautures and eventually google will make them public, just like the assistant last year.
Moto Z force: Smaller battery than the Essential but you have many mods available.
S8: Samsung bloat is just horrible.
Essential: Hardware and build quality is great but we have very limited accesories. Stock android out of the box is amazing, no need of custom roms at the moment.

I came from the 6p then HTC u11. I love the essential. I always root and flash latest and greatest but that is not available and we may never see a strong dev community. With that being said the essential is amazing stock. Between the one plus and essential I think it'll come down to preference. The essential looks and feels great while the one plus looks very Samsung like. I do not regret the 700 I spent on the essential and might cancel my pixel 2 xl order after seeing all the screen issues. But I'll for sure keep the essential

I think that we all are missing an important feature from Essential, mods. Yes, we only have on the moment but maybe in a few months essential and third party will bring great features to the essential phone using mods. That for me gives an advantage to the essential over OP5T, because software and hardware are almost the same.
Little worried buying one from Best Buy, scared it may be old original manufactured units, and the ones bought directly from Essential themselves would be newer manufactured phones, with fixes ?

At least if you get it from Best Buy you can pick it up or they will actually give you shipping information. Ordered one from the Essential website at 7am yesterday, got order confirmation, they took the money and I have heard nothing since about shipping.

I purchased mine form Best Buy yesterday and it seems fine. I haven't even looked at the speaker grill and I'm not going to. My phone seems perfect so far, and if something goes wrong in the future, I'll just send it to Essential. All of the problems I've had in the last month with other flagships, the Essential phone is a breath of fresh air.
Edit...This phone against other flagships. I would either get this phone or the OnePlus. But I chose the Essential because of the beautiful hardware, and big screen on a small frame.

There have been complaints about the speaker grill on older phones. Apparently Essential used a piece of fabric as the speaker grill. This fabric seems to be damaged easily. If you get a newer phone, this fabric has been replaced with a something else, maybe metal, I don't know. I'm not going to worry about it though. There have also been reports of the newer phones having tougher ceramic on the back, more scratch resistant. That is pure speculation though. I say don't worry about these things, and enjoy your new phone. If you have a problem later, surely Essential will fix it.

I see. Yes mine is definitely "metal" I'm guessing titanium? It looks no different than the rest of the side band.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is a thread with photos on Reddit about this. Essential was replacing older phones with new phones with an updated speaker grill, but now someone said that they are repairing the phones instead of replacing them. I don't think it's a big issue myself.
