Would you still buy the N4 today?

Hi, i'm an Atrix owner, and my dad's phone just died, so i thought that i could buy a new phone for me and give my atrix to him. It will have more than he can use anyway.
So, i'm trying to go with the best for under $300 (unlocked). I suffered the Motorola's lack of updates with my Milestone and this Atrix, so i want a futureproof device (balanced with the price). So my first thought of course is the Nexus. If it gets 5.0 i'll be happy for another year i guess.
But i don't know what's in the market right now, so maybe i'm missing another good device for the price, or maybe the Nexus 4 is not as good as it looks. So that's why i'm asking what the title says.
Would you still buy the Nexus 4?

I gave my old lady my old Atrix and grabbed the Nexus.
Now I'm trying to talk her in to getting one.
The price now @ $249 to performance ratio can't be beat considering you own the phone out right, no contract crap.
Get updates on day 1 release, it will get 5.0
The camera is decent enough I find...after all it's a phone.
If you don't care about the lack of a SD card and a non removable battery. Then it's def worth it
After the Atrix you'd be very happy with it.
I'd get a case for it the as it's an extremely slippery phone though.

If you're on a budget and looking for unlocked and properly priced, then yes, it's perfect. You don't get 4G LTE out of the box, and you only get it with fixes and always changing the settings back. If not having 4G LTE is fine, then yes, it's your best bet. MetroPCS and Boost are selling the SIII for $400 still. You still get a year warranty of course when you buy it from Google.

Only if I didn't already own one. Why?
1. Price/performance ratio is insane
2. Dev support is lively
3. LTE on Tmobile
4. No contract
5. Storage fits my music collection
6. Dat back

so seems buying n4 still worth it if you just want to use it for a decent purpose only, am I right ? I'm not a type of person who loves to rooted or change kernel to phone.

I got mine the other day. Coming from a GS3, I am more then happy with the N4. Will I get an N5 when it comes up, most likely but depending on the price maybe not as soon as it is released.
My wife picked up a HTC One. Spec wise and quality build that is on the HTC One is top of the line right now but I would not take one over the N4. There is just something special about a Nexus device and it runs fantastic.

Its the best. No doubt about it. Just go for it. I'd buy it again if I have to. Best performance with such specs at this price. Just brilliant.

I did. Am selling my Xperia Z for profit, and got an Nexus 4 for £159. Much prefer the look, feel and performance over the Sony. Love it.

For some stupid reason, it still costs Rs. 24,990 ($ 379) in india (flipkart.com). Were it not for this silly pricing, i would have bought it a long time back.

I would but just because of the value. For $200-$300 you get a great unlocked phone. It isn't the best phone but it definitely is for the price range. It definitely does have it quirks though. For one I hate the fact that I am limited to 16gb of storage as there is no SD Card slot. Google however has great cloud based apps so you really don't need 64gb. For me, I have 30+ GB of music and its all on the cloud with Google play. Even when your offline you still have access you your music though because the app very conveniently caches songs periodically to keep some stored locally (I have about 2gb local). The screen is not full 1080p which is becoming the norm now and not to forget the phone has horrible color calibration, which can be fixes with a custom kernel. The phones battery life also isn't the greatest... As a pretty heavy user I probably would have to charge it at least once throughout the day. The camera also is pretty crappy and so is the speaker.
Bottom line. The phone is definitely worth every cent but it does have its issue. There are plenty of phones better than it but they're all $600+ phones. So yes even today, I would say to Stoll get it for the value

Take the 8 gb version for example and look at other models in the same price range.
You see things like the Samsung Young, which really are no match at all for the Nexus 4!
Try and name 1 device for under 400$ that is better, I think you will have a hard time.
And now the Nexus is only half of that!

I just ordered mine last week when the price dropped. I have been using the Galaxy Nexus for the last year and will likely never purchase another non-Nexus device ever again.
For me, it was all about value. As others have mentioned - it is pretty hard to beat the current 199/249 price point that these are available at right now. I had originally planned on holding off until the N5 was released but simply couldn't pass up this deal.
Now just anxiously waiting for it to arrive!

hell yes. And here in Europe is not just a 100$ drop, its a 100€. Finally the 1€-1$ thing is on our side

I am not a guy which swaps phones like socks, but just wondering, seems to be a really good phone, but sd820 seems sooo promising. I have samsung galaxy ace 2 right now, bought it on 2013 january, and i have it till now, and now looking to buy a great phone with good XDA support (yesh im root/custom rom flashing user ) So any thoughts? maybe i would better keep money till samsung galaxy s7 release with either SD80 or exynos 8 ? Because it would mean nexus 6p to lead dropping in price really fast. Any thoughts? thank you.

Thermal throttling is a thing on SD810, and as far as I can tell, SD820 was delayed due heat related problems. So it seems thermal throttling will stay with us. That was a key thing for me when I was deciding, whether I should pick Nexus 6P or wait for the spring and SD820 devices.
I took Nexus 6P.
Nexus 6P is a easy choice if you're interested in using custom roms and/or are interested in app developing.

Which means that it is double more than nexus 6p right? And do you think if new upcomming smartphones with these mediocre processors will lead phones to price up to 1k usd? in US or in EU

Synthetic tests prove nothing. Don't be fooled by benchmarks. Mine 32GB model cost me 650€. So yes, if you like it, get it. I've liked mine a lot.
Flagship phone prices have been increasing over the years, but mostly phones get more expensive because of the storage options (16/32/64/128)

It'll be a huge upgrade from your current phone, but I don't think shelling out the Europe price for it is worthy - hell, it's not just marginally expensive than US or even HK/TW prices! You might want to seek other purchase routes if possible.
If I were you I'd wait for the next batch of SD820 phones, imagining they'd sell for about the same.

I wasn't happy about the price difference us Europeans have to suffer but I bit the bullet and got my 64GB Aluminium 6P for 699 Euros a couple of weeks ago, it's worth every penny in my opinion. Just sucks that we're basically paying for the promotions Americans are getting.

It is a pretty bad price differential, and I don't think that there's anything one could write that would make the situation any better for you.
As to your choice, I think you made the right one...the attention a smartphone receives after it released is about 1-2 months, if you're lucky.
The odd thing about the technology treadmill is that there is no perfect timing to buy that is independent of your personal needs and available funds at the time of purchase. You should buy the best you can afford, and ignore that which happens afterwards, or it'll drive you crazy.
The months preceding the release of a new device can be exciting, but that's what the manufacturers want...buzz. The cold, hard truth is that the moment the new phone hits the market, the media shifts the dialog to the ones that are...6 months from release...they are already pushing S7 leaks, and it's not going to be available until Q2 2016. And, by the time the S7 arrives, the Note 6 will be just around the corner. In the above scenario, if you waited for the perfect phone, it would never arrive.
You are holding the best Android handset available, and it I includes features that no other smartphone manufacturer can promise...great battery life, regular updates from Google, and plenty of development in the Android Development and Original Development sections.
Buy and stay with the Nexus...you'll never go back to another Samsung phone.

If you're coming from a Galaxy Ace, then get yourself a near-new Galaxy S4 or S5 and save yourself a truckload of money! Those phones are tried and tested and will be a noticeable improvement over what you now have. Plus there are oodles of goodies, mods and proven ROMs for them...with all the bugs worked out. You don't need the latest and greatest because it's usually a bunch of hype, especially if you like to muck with the phones. Then in 3 years from now, you can score an S6 for a song.

In Germany you have to pay about 150 Euro extra for a Nexus 6p which is criminal in my opinion. But what else can you expect from a country which is reigned by "do-gooders" (=people with a IQ of less than 80 ) ? However, if you want longterm updates for the next years, a Nexus 6p is still a good choice

That's NOT normal! With any phone. That suggests a different problem that had nothing to do with the phone. There are several typical sources of rapid battery drain:
1. Battery is shot/old/fake...change the battery
2. SD card has a problem...change the SD card
3. Cell signalnis weak so phone is constantly searching for better signal...turn on airplane mode...if the drain stops then it's weak signal OR the modem in the phone needs to be changed (by flashing a better one) OR the SIM card is bad
4. Rogue app that's constantly running and waking up the system when it should be sleeping...download Gsam Battery Monitor app to see what's chewing down the battery, then either uninstall the culprit or root and put it to sleep with Greenify
5. Update to latest version of firmware (there were reports of a system issue where phone was not sleeping when it should have been), and delete all the Samsung bloatware for a lighter less ROM
6. Playing a video intensive game non-stop
7. Watching YouTube videos non stop
8. Turning on GPS, Wi-Fi, Internet and cell radio even though you aren't using them especially in weak signal areas...turn off GPS and Wi-Fi if you're not using them
9. Do a spring cleaning...format cache and clear Dalvik as it sometimes gets gummed up in there
10. Yes, it's possible that the phone itself is a bad unit (but that's rarely the case)...so return it for an exchange if within the warranty period
But there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the S4 or S5 that would cause battery to last only 1 to 1½ hours!

I've gone back three pages and didn't see another thread on this...I'm sure they exist but who wants to dig?
Anyway, I've owned two of these devices and had issues with both. The first one at launch was the plain aluminum, which I sent back because I wasn't happy with the feel. It felt "hollow" for lack of a better word. I don't know how to explain it; coming from the Nexus 6, I expected this solid aluminum beast like the HTC M7 when it came out.
The second one, a couple of months later, was the black, which had the weird pinkish screen hue going on. On top of that, when I bought a couple of different cases, the removal of said cases caused the phone to tweak and bend. But not bend as in bend test videos, rather if you took one hand and grabbed the top, other hand grabbed the bottom, and twisted it (top twist left and bottom twist right). My phone didn't sit flat on a table after that, so I returned it.
I've read around that some of the most recently manufactured units have a fixed screen, so I'm thinking about giving this a third try. I've since moved on to an iPhone 6s+, but still have my Nexus 5, 6 and Galaxy S6 Edge+.

I have a thread created here that is similar, OP.
I want this device as well, but instead of posing a question "Do I ..." I posed the question "Would YOU buy this phone again tomorrow"
The question really isn't whether there are good deals out there for this device, it's whether or not a year into this device people are still happy with it, and on XDA that's a hard thing to get a yes on..
There were some things that have come up with the best buy deal... For instance it's my understanding that if you buy from Best Buy you will only have Huawei's warranty and not Google's... Might make you look elsewhere?
Anyways... Good luck. Ill be picking mine up this week somewhere

I bought a refurb for $316 from BB. Arrived in like new condition. I would think twice about paying $399 for this. The only reason I purchased the 6p because I will be travelling overseas and need a new phone. My 2013 Moto X is aging and very frustrating to use. If you are in no hurry, wait.

Yeah... True...
I have a V10 that is not going away. I really am picking this phone up to satisfy my flashing needs, plus it's a nexus phone!!!
It will probably be something I use as a daily driver at some point... Maybe... I have 2 batteries for my V10, an external charger for the spare, and a 200gb SD card.. I can't see me choosing the 6P over the V10 to keep with me on the go, or with my sim in it ... That may change...
You like the refurb? I thought about buying the refurb... Don't want to get screwed out of the Google warranty...

I bought mine @ Amazon/PrimeDay for $370/64gb plus tax with Prime free same day shipping, so keep checking Amazon website.

I sold mine S7 Edge, then bought HTC 10 which was a disaster (battery life literally was going down 4-5% when idle) and decided to use vanilla android. i see no difference in day to day use/look & feel compared to my previous phones

For me, the most important difference that I like is that Google's phones are updating more frequently (monthly now) than others. Official Nougat is just around the corner for Nexus phones but others have to wait!!!

Just picked up a Gold 64G for $350 privately. Good deal I thought.

check for battery measurements when you first get the phone and check again after you have reviewed other details, just cause you wouldn't wanna get stuck with a phone that has a bad battery ( which might happen cause of the early shut off issues reported here ) if it is a bad battery you can buy an after market one and that will fix the issue but you can sway seller for a better price
check the volume and power buttons and ensure that it has click and are fully functional
check head phone jack for audio
check charger port for any damage
ask seller if it has the early shut down issue and if so since when and at what percentage does it do it on.
ask seller if he has orignal proof of purchase he can provide so in case of a warranty claim you can get a hold of that POP which he can black out as all they need is a picture of the receipt .
make sure to ask where the device was purchased from.
does the screen work fine?? go on google.com and see if theres any abnormalities against the white back ground.
do the speakers work>>?
how about the cameras??
does it make phone calls with no mic or headset issues?

TBH, I wouldn't buy a 6P. Many of them are having battery issues right now, and unless it still has warranty support and/or was purchased from the Google store, it will be really annoying. May I ask what you'll be paying for it? That may change my mind, but I would wait for the G6, S8 or the Pixel to drop and get one of those instead.
I've loved my 6P, but it's now outdated since Google isn't really supporting it anymore with the Pixel out and the widespread battery issues.
edit: the guy above me has a good post on what to look for. you may want to use swappa to make sure the imei number hasn't been reported for anything. https://swappa.com/esn

If you install an app like AccuBattery you can't really measure battery health until you run the phone and do a charge. I've had zero serious issues with my 8 month old 6P but some people have had problems with early battery shutdown, random reboots and the as bad as it sounds boot loop of death. You are taking a chance buying a used 6P as the failure rate for these phones is much worse than it should be. At least one person reported that his early shutdown issue went away after the March update. This is obvious but make sure the phone is unlocked and has any lockscreen security disabled before you purchase it. People have claimed to have purchased locked phones that they couldn't get into on Swappa. I would reboot the phone and see if everything boots up ok and play some music through the speakers. There's not really much you can do beforehand to tell if the phone is a lemon. You are basically relying on the honesty of the seller to disclose if there are problems are not. You definitely want to verify that the phone is up and running before handing over any money. Good luck.

6p is nice but build quality isn't all that great. I got screen burn in pretty quickly too (from the soft keys), which I've never had on any phone before.

Find out the manufacturing date

I wouldn't buy a used 6P without any warranty. Just too many potential issues.

290 for a one year 6P but 32, 64 or 128GB?
The price of used and new 6P have increased like crazy (for reference https://keepa.com/#!product/1-B019TWO6WM). I bought my 32GB 350 euros (EU is generaly more expensive) in August last year.
I love it but it's only 8 months old and there are 2 problems that affect some users after around 1y:
1/ early battery degradation with a workaround to buy and change the battery. You can calibrate the battery and check with accubattery how much it reports. Under 2700mAh the battery is officially considered End Of Life by the OEM
2/ the other is boot loop of death with no known workaround. You have a 290$ brick.
I wouldn't put more than 200 on a 32GB. And knowing the potential problems mentioned above, I'm not even sure I would by a 1y 6P.

I got an offer of 530$(35k INR) for pixel 32 GB (one month used ) with bill and 11 months of warranty.

It's supposed to be a really good phone, I would definitely get one

I bought a brand new 6P 3 weeks ago ($500) and haven't looked back or regretted. It's still really one of the top Android phones most specifically from an Android development perspective. Octos ROM with Flash kernel with substratum mods is all I need at the moment to make this thing what I need.
Maybe in several months or a year the battery gets shot, but by then I'll be ready to move on to a new device. This was to replace my Nexus 6 which I almost literally hacked to death, killed the battery. The Verizon Pixel can't be unlocked-rooted now, so the 6P was my choice. If you get a non-Verizon Pixel and want to root, then maybe that's the device to get. Huge bezel though - ouch can't get over that and the Iphone-like hardware.

IPhone hardware is great though. When you hold it it feels like a very premium device. Apple and Samsung are making the most consistent and well made phones imo. I like both personally. Even if you hate apple, there is no denying they do a good job on the hardware. So many phones have large bezels, however that will be a thing of the past soon enough.
That being said, the 6p is a great phone no doubt and I don't think anyone said otherwise. For the money he is spending though he could afford something better imo.
It was great for the price, it is nearing EOL though

From what I've read, 7.1.1 Verizon Pixel XL bootloader cannot be unlocked as of earlier this month, but perhaps that's changed recently.

Wow that's horrible that would totally defeat the purpose of having a "nexus" (I know it's pixel but still same concept, pure android device)

Yep, that's why i didn't get it since I'm on Verizon. And didn't want to spend so much $$$ for a device with hardware and form that didn't work for me. Can you imagine a google phone that you can't mod? Nope. :silly:

Nexus 6P in 2017?

So recently my M8 has decided to degrade a lot faster than a typical Android phone would, so I'm looking for an upgrade. Considering I'm still a college student, I can't make sense of spending over $500 just for a phone. I recently saw a few models (64GB and 128GB) for under $400, but would anyone still recommend buying this phone in 2017? The bootloop issue keeps me from pulling the trigger. I would rather not purchase another phone that I'm gonna want to throw at a wall only a few months into owning it.

If you can get a NEW model 64GB for a great price, then yeah. In the US, Walmart is selling a new 32GB model for $365. The phone is still fast as hell, runs 8.0 and gets monthly security updates. Ongoing community support is guaranteed for a LONG time. :good:

I used my 6P for about a year without any issues but I can't recommend it to those that need a reliable phone. Definitely wouldn't pay anywhere near $400. Just too many potential issues and there's better options in that price range. I bought my 64 GB gold 6P over a year ago for about $400 but had other options (5x and 6) if it had boot loop or battery issues. Now I have the 3T and will probably sell the 6P.

Yea I'm still weary of the bootloop. The phone I found was an official refurb from Google, but still, if it's unreliable even afterwards, I'd rather spend the extra money now so I don't have to spend even more later.
BTW I would prefer to buy one that works on all four networks. Currently on Sprint (hot garbage) but I'm looking to move to T-Mobile after I graduate.

My Pixel XL died and I picked up the Nexus 6P.
It's 95% as fast as the Pixel XL.
Apps do open faster on the Pixel, but the difference is negligible.
I never realized I'd be this happy with the 6P.
My only issue is premature battery failure.
I'd budget $25 to get a replacement battery if you're comfortable doing it yourself.
If not, then budget a lot more, or get a better phone.

Have my 6P for 14 months now. 95% battery health and working flawlessly so far.
Can't see any reason to replace it. if the only issue I'll have in the future is the battery than I'll simply replace it and keep using it.
It got a 2K AMOLED screen , 2Ghz big cluster and 1550 little cluster CPU, 3 Gb RAM.. can't see any reason to replace it by now.

I still think it's very worthy phone even in 2017. It's my all time favorite Android phone. I've owned it twice now. I as of about 4 days ago just bought another Nexus 6p from an individual who had bought it from Google but never even opened it up. It had just been sitting in the box unopened at his house for the past two years. Although I really wanted the silver, the one he had was 64g and in frost white. When he told me what he'd sell it to me for I went into shock. I bought a brand new 64g Nexus 6p for $150!!! Sealed in box never even turned on. This phone is butter smooth. The screen is amazing. It's great for media. Runs the very latest software from Google. I like it tens times better than the Pixel. The Pixel is absolutely ugly and it's not even a true XL at 5.5 inches where the 6p is 5.7 which I would consider that to be an XL. The phone design thanks to Huawei is stunning. So yeah if you can find one in the original box at the right price that was purchased from Google in case you do need a replacement then I'd say definitely yes to getting one. Don't let the boot loop scare you. Although it happens it's not to the majority of the phones. You only hear of the bad apples and not the good ones. Well mine is perfect although it was brand new it's still two yesrs old just never opened up and my battery is fine. Just do your research and ask questions and get you one. You won't regret it. This phone is by far the best and most smooth Android phone I've ever used. It's definitely at the right price very worth buying even in 2017. I believe it will get updates until late 2018 so you're good there too. Like I said research it and definitely fine one that comes in the original box with the contents. It'll help your resell value down the road.

Don't do it... Worst build quality ever, it's essentially made out of tin foil

Until the Google Pixel dual partition phones get Xposed working, I'm sticking with the 6P.
Even TWRP doesn't backup/restore reliably for Pixel dual partition setup yet.
My 6P has RR and Xposed for Nougat working just right and I'm not letting that go.

I have my 6p for over a year now and to be honest I am not happy In 2017 you would end up much better with OnePlus 5 that has similar performance to iPhone 8 and much better than Samsung Galaxy 8. Nexus 6p is way behind them now
The "frame" (thin plastic around the screen) goes off quickly and it looks quite bad and the body is made of soft metal so you would have a lot of tiny holes and few scratches after few months (and drops). Battery is good though, after a year still holds about 95% (due to AccuBattery app) and performance itself is neither bad or good.

No it's not a good buy. You want a phone to last long look elsewhere. You might get lucky and get a good model or you might get one that has one of the many issues that plagues these phones. Go for a one plus 3T

I absolutely love mine. expect to replace the battery at some point, but other than that, I think it's still a relevant phone in 2017. buy it if you see it cheap.

I have an offer of a great condition Nexus 6p for 225. Should I? Any idea how common the batt/loop issues are?

Swappa has v2O for 250-300.
My 6P has been great for over a year but I wouldn't buy even a cheap 6P unless I didn't need it to be a reliable phone. My 6P is now used as a backup.

No. Short battery life, lag and overheating, very poor build, terrible support from Huawei. I would avoid it personally

When this phone came out, I SUPER wanted one bad, but pretty glad I avoided it, if what I've read online is truly a common thing and not just a vocal minority. (I tried to see if I could find actual failure stats/percentages, but nothing concrete.)
And yeah, I looked at swappa, but I'm one of those "must be in my hand to inspect before I spend" guys, online purchase of expensive used electronics makes me nervous.
Found an LG V20 for ~200 this morning, but its a bit of a drive. Might do it...

Glad to help out. I try not to fanboy out on any phone I own, and be honest about the good and the bad. XDA can be the worst place to ask for advice about buying phones honestly. People will say anything is good.
I keep mine around to play around with and test android updates. It hasn't been my main phone in a while though.
