It doesn't seem like HTC asks you over the phone. Do they just get the phone and then charge you if it is an unlocked bootloader?
My phone isn't rooted, but I was asked if I'd rooted it in one of my two warranty swaps.
I'm in the process of doing that now. My rooted phone has been with HTC for a few days and I have not heard anything yet. I'll update when or if I do.
many people on these forumns have without issue.
they charged my $55 for a replacement because of my unlocked b/l.. good for the pople who got away with it though

What was the process that was executed for this? Did they call you? Say something? Did you try and get out of it?
nope. i got my inquiry a couple days after i sent it in and it said that my cost was $55. i called them and they said it was "something i did". but the only thing i would have done was unlock the bootloader. i hadnt dropped it or scratched... basically brand new. so.. much luck you. hopefully you dont get flamed for trying to rip HTC off, like me in the other thread i started haha

I'm not trying to rip them off. I will not hide it if I'm asked and I haven't been so far. What do you mean you got your "inquiry"?
I'm sending mine next week just for the dust under the screen problem. why are you guys sending yours?
Because of my atrocious battery. Although, they offered to send a free battery if I thought mine was bad.
Has anyone returned it for a full refund (or minus $55) with an unlocked boot loader? I wouldn't mind doing that and picking up the Milestone instead.

First (new) phone had a problem with the g sensor and an ill-fitting bottom plastic bit.
Second (first swap) phone had a blue tint to the screen, and a very noticeable blue tint in the bottom fourth or fifth of the screen. Also a dead pixel.
Third (second swap) phone has a much better screen, but still a bit of noticeable blue tint along the bottom edge. Also, the horizontal g sensor is off by quite a bit, and it has the same ill-fitting bottom plastic issue the first had, only much less annoying than the first.
I'm calling tomorrow to do a third swap, hoping this one won't have any issues. If it does, I'll keep whichever is better, and wait a few months before doing another swap. Maybe some of the later AT&T batches won't have the same kinds of problems.
Even with all that, this is the best phone I've ever had. I'm just being super picky after forking over $530. The swaps have been easy; I get a new one overnighted and then send the old one back in the same box with a fedex label htc provides. I have zero complaints about the service, I just wish I'd gotten a perfect phone in the beginning. =)

The Milestone also has the dust problem. I came from a Telus Milestone because it got a speck of dust and I was afraid more would get in. Now I have a speck of dust under my Nexus but it is really small and no more has gotten in.

Well, if battery is an issue couldn't just have replaced your battery? That would cause no concern over the phone itself, so maybe they haven't checked the bootloader yet...

Hmmm.. I'm having trouble with my N1 as well, but I'm reluctant to send it in in fear that they'll charge 55 dollars over the unlocked bootloader just to repair just the power button.

Hello guys,i sended my tablet 2 times for the grounded touchscreen issue many of you know ,first time my tablet returned after 2 days at the repair center and the center didn't done anything to it,just a hard reset.
So I Send the tablet back for a second time ,this time the tablet was there over 20days,this time they replace a "usb board" so i thought problem fixed, today i got my tablet and it came with the same problem.... but this time more horrible with with missing touches all over the upper middle part of the Screen when it's not grounded and that's not enough,i was shocked when i saw the service damaged the frame of my tablet!! ,seems like someone did try to open it with a screwdriver and the frame has a damaged/broke part on the top right ,i called the service center and told them that the problem hasn't fixed still! and specially for the damaged they service did on the frame! and i did send a picture of it ,they told me they will make a new RMA and i will send it tomorrow AGAIN.
My adventure continues,i used to be a very big supporter of Asus... has anyone experience anything similar? please let me know ,or any suggestion guys
They have had mine for 4 weeks.........
I just got my tablet back day before yesterday. It took exactly 2 weeks from the time I sent it. I was having an issue with the USB port. It wouldn't charge or connect to my pc while the tablet was turned on. It would charge when it was powered off and the computer could see it while in fastboot mode. So I was able to return it to stock and relock the bootloader.
I don't know the details of what was repaired. Is that documented somewhere? I did setup up an account with ASUS. I actually started the whole RMA process online. Never actually spoke to a person. For the most part it was pretty painless other than not having a tablet for 2 weeks.
Here are videos i took after this second repair to see the problem is still here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60oysCFNopk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZVRJD4omEU
and this is what they do to my tablets frame, which i had in amazing condition since day one with case and screen protector View attachment 2691497
I RMAd mine because the micro USB port was intermittently working. It took them 4 weeks to decide not to fix it, and send me what they claim is a new one..........

My heart goes out to anyone struggling with this tablet. I waited weeks and tried updates but it never helped. Customer service was of no assistance. I've read nothing but horror stories on sending in these units. Luckily I was able to correct my issue with Ts11 fix. I am now seeing people have problems with it messing up again.
Highly considering selling my unit online while it's working and washing my hands of the situation.
Just remember no matter what the company, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Be patient, kind, not rude, and persistent. You may have to make ten phone calls but eventually they will get tired of it and help.
I am glad to read that someone in this thread actually got Asus to send them a replacement. I would like to know what condition it's in and if you've had any problems with it yet???

Wow, at least you got an RMA!!!
I know this is off topic but does relate to what you say...
I have tried RMA for a 3 mother boards over the years. The last motherboard, about 6 months ago... They never compelted the RAM process, they never sent an email confirmation, nothing. I emailed multiple times and they said they have no RMA. Then out of the blue the email with RMA number. This was after many attempts on the website. So I send said motherboard back to asus thinking it was an issue with the power capacitors (I am very knowledgeable when it comes to mother boards). Keeping in mind, it was still under warranty, they email me back saying that there are scratches around the CPU mounting holes that are causing the issue and its $180 to fix.
Then they dremmeled down even further to "show" me, totally ruining the board.
I have other stories too... That match yours as I only use Asus motherboards on my PC Builds... But that is matching your story. They made product worse and then told me its not under warranty.
Asus is a great manufacturer but the customer service is horrid.
My Nexus 7 is @ Asus atm.

It'll take up to 7 - 10 business days before I know something...

I just got mine back from Asus repair.
They replaced the LCD panel in my Nexus.
The 2 red smudges are gone but... I got 1 dead pixel back.
Phoned Asus support but apparently 1 dead pixel is within the legal margins here in NL and they cannot help me with this problem.
So long story short: 2 red smudges within a month of purchase, Asus replaced LCD, smudges gone, dead pixel instead.
I have never been to a service center until I start using tablets made by ASUS.
The very first time I went to their service center is because I got a Transformer Prime (TF201) that bricked itself when updating the official firmware! They took about a week to repair and the motherboard is replaced. I didn't have time to give a thorough check as they are about to close the center (I went after work). When I got home, I check the condition again and found out that the frame is loosen and scratched. What's worse, this new motherboard made me unable to unlock the tablet when I have decided to go cyanogenmod, I had to send it to RMA (RMA for what is obviously a software issue) again in order to get it unlocked.
I swore I'll never buy any ASUS product again.
Despite the hatred towards ASUS, Google Nexus once again draw me back to ASUS. As much as I believe in Nexus brand, ASUS once again made me disappointed (obviously I've the same touchscreen issue). However, I'm hesitated as to whether I should send it to RMA or not. I don't want to have a tablet in physically good condition that come back with a loosen and scratched frame.
This issue don't just made me hate ASUS more, it also made me starts doubting my previous thinking that "Nexus is a good brand" to buy.
UPDATE 1/14/2017
So after calling uncountable times from Uruguay to Google, Best Buy and Huawei. I finnaly made some progress. I call Huawei and they told me that if I was still on the warranty period they will help me with my device. So they asked me for some photos of the phone and a copy of the recipt of my purchase. After 3 days of waiting I recive a mail with a label from UPS to send my phone, I was really surprised because the payed for a shippment by plane of 130 dollars. I sent the phone and they told me that in a few days they will email me back telling me if my phone it's able for a repair or the will replace and upgrade my phone, (by adding extra memory). I'll keep up to date this post.
BTW thanks to all of you who tried to help me!
A week ago my phone just simply turn off and never boot up again. The ONLY thing that i notice its that the phone was making a electric sound near the top speaker, but the phone didn´t turn on the red light. So i take it to a third party phone repair service and they told me that the motherboard was dead and they couldn´t fix it because here (in URUGUAY) there are no parts for this phone. So im asking u what to do. Send the phone back tu USA to a repair service, buy a new motherboard and repair it by myself.
IMPORTANT: The phone has lees than a year but i buy it on a travel tu USA so the warranty here in Uruguay doesn´t do anything.
Sorry for my english!
Thank U

Work on EUR (ITA) only?
My phone just stopped functioning about a 3 months ago. It would just bootloop without access to bootloader or anything. I called Google (3times) and finally they gave me a new one. The first two wanted me to mail it to huawei for 4 weeks without a phone. The 3rd was american and shipped me one. Its probably a doable repair only that the back its a ***** to get off I think. I'd do it myself

Motherboard issue
Hey guys,
I'm from India and I got the Nexus 6P when it was launched. After I got the phone, around a month later I got the phone replaced as it had some battery problems. Now the present scenario is 4 days ago the phone was acting pretty weird. The camera app wasn't opening and it would close saying there's an error. The fingerprint sensor was very very slow. If there was an incoming call it would just vibrate and the screen would be still off. I took it to the Huawei service center and left it there. Now there are saying the motherboard is damaged and they are asking 20000 INR (approx 300 USD). Now the thing is there isn't a single scratch as I had used it in a very careful way and haven't done anything thing to it.The warranty is also expired. I literally feel scammed as paying so much for a phone and it's lifetime is just around 1 and half year. It sucks tbh. And paying so much for that motherboard is useless because even if I sell it the market price for second hand Nexus 6P is less.
Please help me out guys.
Thank you.

Having the same problem as yours bro. But they asked me 14000 INR. So I happened to give it to third party service center and they tried to solve the problem, in fact the phone booted up and now it's in bootloop and they suggested me to take it to authorized service center as they couldn't solve the bootloop issue and they say it's a software issue (they took 2200 INR). Hope it gets solved through the software. I'll update when they give an update. If this doesn't work, i'll just buy a pixel 2

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread.
Anyways, my phone lasted 1 year and 2 months, so basically the phones are clocked to fail after warranty.
I suggest you try the 4 core boot image fix if the phone is bootlooping. Have been running it for few months with this jugaad.
Nexus 6p- dead after 1 yr 9 months
Same problem has happened with me. The phone is now dead after using it for 1 year 9 months. Means 43000 for 1 year 9 months.
Please help me out as the huawei service centre is asking for 18k rs. Why i should pay for the problems that everyone is facing after i browsed the forums pages and lot of other websites.
I feel cheated after purchasing this phone. I was alot positive for nexus series. But they are waste.
Even the google support didnt gave a proper reply
Even i am facing the same issue . I also go to know from the service centre that they already had 30 such complaint. The phone was not physically damaged . This is not fare to pay 20,000 INR when we are not responsible for the issue .

Hello @kat19, the problem seems to be completely hardware and I should replace my botherboard in order for my phone to work. Since it costs too much for the replacement, I sat quiet and planning on buying a new Pixel 2 device. There is nothing I can do with the software for the device to work.

Is your bootloader unlocked? Have you tried flashing the 4 core boot image?
Well, it's happened on Monday. Was using my phone and bloop....screen goes off and that's the last time it worked. Gradually got to the stage where it wouldnt even loop but my 5x is dead. RIP.
So, being out of warranty and all I sent an email to LG to see how much it would cost to repair. Reply came back with a series of questions but no "reply to" address. That's one way of hiding from the problem I suppose. For a company to try and avoid their responsibilities for a screamingly obvious hardware flaw is way out of order. At least Samsung had the guts to put their hands up.
Sharing this as part of the grieveing process in a way for the old Nexus devices. Had a 4, a 7 and then a 5x. The Pixels came out but when I saw their price tags and the setups it just reeked of apple (excuse the bad swearing language). Very sad really for someone who rarely went a whole week without the simple process of changing rom or setup or kernel but that was the beauty of the Nexus ethos.
Since Monday evening I have been the owner of a Moto G5 Plus. Only charged it three times since getting it. Ads are part blocked in stock, it's nippy and am moving on with my life post nexus. Trouble is it's still on 7.0 but not a big issue for me.
Anyway, thanks guys and gals for the good times. LEarnt a lot about android, poor customer service and build quality from LG and made some good friends (and enemies) on here.
Keep happy
My 5X also died from last Sunday.... I sent my phone to authorized service (Procordia in Greece). I'm waiting now when the phone will be fixed (changing motherboard).
So I know you already moved on to the G5 plus, but you should see about getting it repaired. Then you could always keep on hand as a .spare device. Mine bootlooped (a second time) well out of warranty but I filled out the RMA request on LG's website (didn't talk to anyone, just like I did the first time) and they fixed it a second time for free. I don't recall how long they did it for, but they extended the warranty
edit: should point out I'm in the US and it might not go as well in other countries
My nexus died on me yesterday, still have 3 days left in warranty. Filed 2 reports to LG to request a repair and have had no email or anything, its as if my request has vanished. This is utterly ridicolous as I need a phone and I'm currently without one and can't afford anything worth buying. Will have to resort to using my Nokia 1600. Shame on LG for being like this
You should try contacting LG via phone and that might work better. The 5X warranty has been extended to 18 months on a case by case basis since this is a hardware problem. If they won't fix it, all you did was spend time on the call, but if you are eligible to have it fixed, you'd have a spare phone.
These bootloops are getting more and more common as our phone ages. Mine froze and shut down randomly and bricked while using it a few months back. Thankfully I bought mine here in the UK from Carphone Warehouse where I sent it for repairs, got the motherboard replaced, and fixed in one week, for free with the 2-year warranty. It sucks that LG aren't willing to help you guys though.
Mine died on me earlier this year. Luckily I had some backup phones. Using my old 2013 Nexus 5 currently. I can get life from my phone here and then but it freezes and shuts down during the boot animation. I bought mine from someone off craigslist so I doubt I'd have any luck getting it fixed by Google or LG. Too bad parts are hard to come by or I would try and buy a new motherboard and replace it myself. I really do miss using the 5X though. Just got to hold off until the end of the year for the next Pixel.
My Nexus 5X also bootlooped itself to death yesterday. I purchased it January 2016 when my Nexus 5 decided to kill itself. Unfortunately I also bought a 5X for my girlfriend at the same time which I'm expecting to go anytime now. I'm currently using my Samsung Galaxy S II that I bought at launch and is still alive 6 years later. Sucks because the only new phone that looks good to me right now is the LG G6, but I don't trust LG anymore so I don't know what to replace it with. Galaxy S 8 is purdy but I don't want to deal with burn in (like on my GS2). Essential also looks nice but doesn't have a headphone jack so that's out. Might have to go Sony with it's gigantic bezels. :-\
Update: Getting a refurbished replacement from Google. Hopefully by the time this one dies there will be some more appealing replacement options.
My second 5X died few days ago. Good phone bad quality
Mine died today. Warranty expired last October but they are sending me a refurb replacement. I've had it since November 2015 and even Bought it off swappa so I feel fortunate in one way but a phone should last a lot longer than that.

Who did you go through? Google or LG? I bought mine from someone off Craigslist but haven't tried asking for a replacement since I've never had any type of warranty. Did you have to show any kind of receipt of buying it or anything or did they just simply say "Ok" and send you a refurbished one? Also, did you call them or email them?

Did you have to show any kind of receipt of buying it or anything or did they just simply say "Ok" and send you a refurbished one? Also, did you call them or email them?

I went through Google. All they did was ask for and run the lME number. I did not expect anything to come of it but I thought it was worth a try. I chatted online.

Well I just might do the same. If you bought it from a third party and it died yesterday and your already getting a refurbished one, I think I may have a shot. Good to know. Thanks
Well. Some progress here too.
Decided to give LG a go but as I bought it over ebay they wouldnt entertain any warranty work but gave me their out of warranty people called SBE here in the UK.
Contacted SBE and without any commitment on their behalf the fella said that they would look at it and if its not showing signs of damage and water etc then it should be covered as they have permission to replace faulty motherboards with only postage costs.
So am packing the phone off to them and see what happens. Anybody else experienced this route? Would be worth getting it fixed just to sell the damn thing afterwards.

Sure,
the verbage is a bit intimidating saying that they are putting full price for refurbished on hold on your account to see if it is covered by warranty but what they want to do is make sure you didn't run over it or drop it from a ten story building.

So you have to send the broken phone to them I assume?

Yes, and then when they receive it and see it's not physically damaged (water, smashed screen) they refund you back the price of the phone. I didn't have to pay shipping either way.

It's kind of funny they would even hold onto the price of the phone seeing as the device isn't under warranty and it would be no loss to them. I mean, what would be the scenario where they would actually charge you the amount of the phone?

They send you the phone right away and give you 21 days to get the bad phone back to them. The hold is to make sure they get an undamaged phone returned to them.

Ah, ok. Well that makes sense then. I thought they would send it to you after they analyzed the damaged one.
This is now my 3rd replacement which is due tomorrow, the first had charging issues, the second crashing apps and charging issues, the third after about 7 days use this horrible bright white line just appeared on the screen out of nowhere today, i'm now expecting my fourth replacement tomorrow, i'm about to give up on the XL if this next one isn't right, I've never had to send a new phone back at all, here's some examples.
I'm on phone #8, welcome to the club. Had to pick up another device to deal with my sanity being almost gone dealing with rma's

That's a bummer. I had issues with my Nexus 6P and Google was very good about making sure things were right. Even after two years they gave me a full refund.
Fortunately, I haven't had any problems with my Pixel XL 2

I'm starting to lose hope, even if i did get what seemed to be a good one that lasted a few months who knows when these lines might appear again out of nowhere, I really didn't want to have to deal with this constant rma cycle, I'm wasting so much time keep setting a new device up it's demoralising.

That's one device i never had an issue with the 6p loved it, Google do seem to be dealing effectively by keep sending me a new one but if they run out of stock and i still can't get a fault free device I'm going to have to ask for a refund

Are they sending you refurb units or new? If refurbs, I would demand a new one. It's a $1,000 phone and no more than 6 months old?

It depends upon the area, if they have refurbs your getting a refurb. Even the new is a "new" in a refurb box. Also, they won't give you a refund.

I can't believe so many people have had to swap so many times. I'm 5 months in with phone #1 and no issues at all.

No these are brand new sealed, I'm in the uk, they said it's not a service centre repair or refurb as it was purchased from the Google store, incidentally the first 2 i had over the course since nov when i pre ordered none of them had any issues with the screen, just this later batch of mine which was manufactured on the 16th nov shipped on the 20th.

I'll be honest mate I've never had to rma a single phone I've purchased over the last 10 years + this is a first, I've been unlucky it seems, although it also seems I'm not alone.
Just to update on this I watched this video https://youtu.be/upLTjUzrRxw a similar issue to him excep he didn't have the line until he pressed a certain part of the screen, I've now been able to remove the line by pressing a certain part of the screen near the bottom near the home button, it has now vanished, i can get it to reappear briefly by pressing the screen again in a certain area, but now it's off, I've told Google if it arrives back to them like this don't think there is nothing wrong with it, there must be some short or damaged connection behind the screen somewhere, I'm still keeping the new one which arrives today.
Facing the same issue
Even I had this experience. But in my case the bright white line was on the left of the phone. I'll let you know that my phone's screen has been cracked since the last 9 months and it had been working perfectly fine until one afternoon when I kept it in my bag and it had the thick line on it. I cannot diagnose if it's a software or hardware issue. I'm going for a screen replacement. But in the meantime can anyone help me to know if it is a software or hardware issue?

My replacement which I've had for nearly a year now is perfect and defect free, whites are white like they should be and no hardware defects, I'm sorry to say it sounds like a hardware issue, if you can firmly press all parts if the screen and sometimes it disappears it's a connection issue but it's very difficult to pin point where the exact loose connection is, if your getting a new and digitizer that may remove the issue.
I can press all parts of the screen perfectly..even where the line is located. Thats what made me think that it is a software bug. Also the line is far brighter than even the highest brightness settings on the phone. I'll have it replaced and I will respond here soon

Yes that's how mine was the line was extremely bright like that pixel line was on full brightness, no problem, loving the pixel 2 xl my best phone so far, will upgrade to the 4 xl if they get rid of that fugly notch on the 3 xl, Good luck with your screen mate.
