I know when flashing, firmware updates can be 1Gb - 2Gb file sizes. When you take that same update OTA, do they send down the entire firmware file, or just the sections that need updating? This 910V is the first phone I have never rooted, and have never taken an OTA update. When I bought it, it was on 5.0. I downloaded the CQC1 firmware and installed it updating it to 6.0, via Odin. It tried to update itself immediately after I rebooted. I disabled the updater until I did some homework, as the thing was relentless about updating and driving me crazy. I see now there is CQD1, CQE1, and CQF2 available. My problem is, I have a crap internet connection (1.5Mb) and am wondering if it has to download that hug file anyway OTA, if I wouldnt be better downloading it myself and installing it via Odin.... rather than an OTA update that gives me no info on progress etc....?
So:
1) OTA or download and install it/them myself
2) If installing myself, Where is the best place to download the huge file, without having to sign up or be throttled?
3) Is there anything in these newer updates that warrant updating, or any problems that arise from them? Or is it wise to just stay on CQC1 which is working without a hitch?
Thanks for any help.

Hi all,
I updated my phone using the Motorola update manager, but my phone still prompted to download the latest update - I clicked yes, and WIFI only, but it just fails and comes up with an error message and a notification I can't remove. Does anyone know of a way to 'cancel' the update? Or am I stuck with this annoying notification and pop ups?
Thanks for any help
I have the same exact problem...I did the update via sbf... weird..
X3, same problem lol. On wifi it says update not available then says its currently downloading an update but does nothing
Well, then you know exactly what the problem is already.... if you SBF update, you aren't OTA updating, and the phone probably asked you to update OTA and you went ahead and flashed over it. I did that on my phone on Sunday, and had to flash back to 4.1.26 in order to OTA all the way up to 4.1.83, via 4.1.57 first. Follow the steps in order like you should and you won't have any issues - my phone works just fine on 4.1.83 after OTA updating it twice, and rooting it with GingerBreak!
Thanks for the responses guys.
If anyone finds a way of removing this problem without having to flash back and then upgrade again, please share the info!
Cheers.
I've installed gingerblur so the OTA route doesn't work (it gives me this ! mark and did nothing), so I have to use sbf method....I guess I could sbf it to 1.2.6 and then OTA it, but I suspect many of the system changes I made will be gone.
hey guys i recently rooted my phone and then saw that 5.0 came out i wasnt able to find any reputable info on un rooting my phone so i could do the over the air update from verizon. however there was 2 updates available from OTA , one took me to another version of 4.4.4 and un rooted me. my boot screen still says custom but i no longer have root. however the ota 5.0 keeps failing. i figured maybe i can up date manually but the only site that has 5.0 for dl is sammobile and their site is down. all the other sites i found seem to be scams or want you to pay for faster dl. i dont care if i even have root any more i just want my phone on 5.0 with out loosing all the data on my phone. does any one have a link for instructions to do this? and a working link for 5.0? thanks
bump for help
Can you not boot into custom recovery twrp/safestrap? I Just re read your post, I'm assuming you can. So do that, and make a backup of /data. In addition it wouldn't hurt to use a usb drive or computer to back up any important files.
You say you want to be able to update without losing your data, I don't know if that's possible.if that is a real problem for you,I'd advise against modifying your phone in the future.
You didn't say why the update is failing, what is the given error message? Have you read the Verizon s5 forum?
A while back I rooted my s4 9500 but i havent used the root stuff much and i forgot about it. Now i saw a few guys with s4 and 5.x so i wanted to update myself. I noticed i couldnt update so a quick google search showed my i could unroot in supersu. I did the unroot. Apps that dont work while rooted such as bank apps work now but the system still gives the same error. Kies wasnt able to update my phone somehow. I just wanna get 5.x without losing my data. I dont care if i end up rooted or not in 5.x
You'll need to download the full ROM and reflash with Odin to restore the 'Official' status needed to get Kies and OTA updates. Find out your CSC and download the latest ROM from somewhere like sammobile.com , data and apps will remain unaffected.
Hi all,
I was running my stock 5.1.1 (LPD23.118-6.1) rom rooted for a long time and wasn't able to receive OTA updates due to the obvious reason about rooting and etc. My recovery wasn't changed. So, I saw the thread about that "flashable zips" about 6.0 roms and decided to test it. Due to some crashes and forced closes, I decided to back to my previous backup of rooted 5.1.1 stock rom. But now I want to have my phone stock as hell, and the first thing that I do was flash the most updated firmware that I found in here that was available to download. I flashed the whole LPD23.118-6.3 stock rom, a little bit newer than my old stock rooted rom. Everything working, everything fine, except...
In bootloader it says "Software status: modified", and when I try to manually check about updates, it says that my software is up to date, which I know isn't true, because OTA update of Android 6.0 is already available (i have a friend who got an X Play and he already received the ota).
How can I solve this?

The force closes you got are completely normal and if you read the thread you will have found out you just need to reboot your phone until they go away.
The status modified just means your bootloader was unlocked and doesn't matter.
You have a few options, keep trying for OTA, flash another version and keep trying for OTA, sideload one of the available OTA zip files, or try a TWRP backup.

Thanks for your reply. Actually i'm downloading the recently posted 6.0 firmware for the Brazilian/Latin American rom in firmware's thread. Unfortunately the download is very slow, but I guess I can surely update without losing anything. The only strange thing is that I didn't received any OTAs....

It's not necessary that if your friend has received the OTA then even you will receive it within few days. The OTA is rolled batch wise and no one knows which phone is in which batch except Moto of course. [emoji4]

The more I read the mode confused I get.
I have Samsung SM-530T Grand Prime (TMobile) that I rooted many months ago using Shinyside's method
https://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/kernel-root-root-sm-g530t-5-1-1-t3203476
It tripped knox, and naturally, I can not download updates from the phone. My last two phones never had any updates, so updates for this phone was never really a concern.
Now I would like to add the security updates.
I have downloaded the latest firmwares here
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-grand-prime/SM-G530T/
The update also shows up in Smart Switch, but it complains about rooted phone...
So I have the option of Odin, Flashfire, or Smart Switch to update the phone.
Question is, what is the most reliable way to update the phone to the latest firmware without rendering it useless?
I don't see a way to download the OTA patches seperate. I've read that the flashfire option leaves the phone rooted, and just updates the rom, while others have stated they lost root and the phone was buggy after the update...
It's my only phone so I don't enjoy crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
For future reference for those trying this...
For me, flashfire didn't work. I tried to do a full backup and partial backup, but every time the phone would hang at the T-Mobile screen at reboot. Had to pull the battery and SD/SIM. Never tried flashing with it.
Unrooted via SuperSU. Still couldn't update due to custom system.
Ran smart switch and ran the update. Rebooted and had updated system, but no wifi.
So, ran Odin installing the latest .md5 from Samsung, rebooted with latest system and wifi.
Then rooted using cf autoroot, so now have the latest system with root.
