Root and firmware update problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A while back I rooted my s4 9500 but i havent used the root stuff much and i forgot about it. Now i saw a few guys with s4 and 5.x so i wanted to update myself. I noticed i couldnt update so a quick google search showed my i could unroot in supersu. I did the unroot. Apps that dont work while rooted such as bank apps work now but the system still gives the same error. Kies wasnt able to update my phone somehow. I just wanna get 5.x without losing my data. I dont care if i end up rooted or not in 5.x

You'll need to download the full ROM and reflash with Odin to restore the 'Official' status needed to get Kies and OTA updates. Find out your CSC and download the latest ROM from somewhere like sammobile.com , data and apps will remain unaffected.

NE9 OTA and go back to stock?

Trying to solve this for a friend.
We're on the pre-NE9 release and I used Towelroot to get the phone root. This was critical because we were migrating from an old S3 to the S5, so it was easier to use Titanium Backup to bring back the apps and savegame data.
Well it turns out my friend needs to run MDM Airwatch and Root cloak isn't working anymore. TBH there really isn't any reason to keep the phone rooted because it just makes OTA difficult too. So I think we're ready to go to an unrooted state.
So the first thing is we're struggling that even after doing a full unroot via SuperSU uninstalling Towelroot, it still doesn't pass MDM. So if anyone has a suggestion go ahead.
I'm not sure whats wrong but even then the OTA won't install either, so I'm suspecting the phone still finds something not in stock state.
So here's my question: Is it possible to install the OTA via Odin and ensure that the apps/data are not lost? I've heard that there's a lot of reasons OTAs can fail, so its more reliable to just use Odin to get the OTA applied. I figure that once we get the OTA updated, perhaps MDM will pass? If not we can always factory reset at that point.

You can't flash the OTA via Odin but you can sideload it by placing it on your ext-sdcard then sideloading from stock recovery. And by MDM I am assuming it's the modem that is not passing verification. Here is the G900V_NE9_Stock_Modem.tar.md5. Flash in PDA slot in Odin(AP in Odin v3.09+) then attempt to take the OTA again.

Question on upgrading to 5.0 from 4.4.4 when i was rooted.

hey guys i recently rooted my phone and then saw that 5.0 came out i wasnt able to find any reputable info on un rooting my phone so i could do the over the air update from verizon. however there was 2 updates available from OTA , one took me to another version of 4.4.4 and un rooted me. my boot screen still says custom but i no longer have root. however the ota 5.0 keeps failing. i figured maybe i can up date manually but the only site that has 5.0 for dl is sammobile and their site is down. all the other sites i found seem to be scams or want you to pay for faster dl. i dont care if i even have root any more i just want my phone on 5.0 with out loosing all the data on my phone. does any one have a link for instructions to do this? and a working link for 5.0? thanks
bump for help
Can you not boot into custom recovery twrp/safestrap? I Just re read your post, I'm assuming you can. So do that, and make a backup of /data. In addition it wouldn't hurt to use a usb drive or computer to back up any important files.
You say you want to be able to update without losing your data, I don't know if that's possible.if that is a real problem for you,I'd advise against modifying your phone in the future.
You didn't say why the update is failing, what is the given error message? Have you read the Verizon s5 forum?

[Q] Update Unrooted phone

I have a Note 3 SM-N900W8 which is running android 4.3 jelly bean. I rooted it about a year ago and unrooted it and returned it to factory kernel and rom etc about a month later. Since the device is showing up as modified, I am unable to update the software via Samsung's built-in feature. How would I go about updating my phone to the latest android version without having to root it or lose any of my data?
Give it to a friend to update it for you or read some basics about PC Odin and do it yourself. Download your rom from sammobile.com in firmware section. Search there for sm-n900w8 make an account to be able to download from there. And there you can see instructions for how to flash it. Google pc odin and run it. You don't need to root for update with odin. Ask if you wonder about something so you don't screw it up.

Looking for the right stock ROM

Hello all, first post here so please be gentle, I've searched and been at this for the better part of the last 12 hours.
I have a US Cellular Note 3 and I plan on trading it in towards a new phone soon (hopefully tomorrow if I can get everything going.) I've never had a custom ROM, I rooted it with towelroot and have used supersu for superuser access and have been using it like that for the past year and a half. From what I understand in order for everything to go over smooth trading it in I need knox to be at 0x0, and for it to show stock official ROM and official device status. As of right now knox is at 0x0, it shows official ROM, but device status shows custom, also in device status in my settings it shows custom and it won't update. I deleted all of my root apps, did a full unroot with supersu, still says custom. I unmounted my SD card and wiped my partition cache, still says custom.
at this point here's what I'm attempting to do based on a few hours of digging, download and flash a stock ROM (Have Odin ready, phones plugged in, drivers installed, downloading what I hope is a good ROM) re root my phone with towelroot, reinstall supersu, run triangle away, full unroot with supersu again, factory reset.
I can't post my download link due to being a new user, I went to sammobile firmwares and punched in my model number and found a download link.
my device model number (SM-N900R4)
Also my baseband version is N900R4TYUCNAB and I'm running 4.4.2.
Now for my questions: Will flashing a stock ROM trip Knox? How do I know for sure if it's a good stock ROM? Is this the appropriate course of action? In hindsight I probably should have asked that question first.
I really hope somebody can help me out with this, I've rooted every phone I've ever had but I feel pretty over my head at the moment.
UPDATE:::: I'M AN IDIOT!
Updated to lollipop through kies fixed the issue. If google leads anybody here in the future just use kies to update.
In all my years of flashing stock Samsung ROMs, none of them have ever tripped the Knox counter.

Rooted SM530t - How to install OTA/security updates?

The more I read the mode confused I get.
I have Samsung SM-530T Grand Prime (TMobile) that I rooted many months ago using Shinyside's method
https://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/kernel-root-root-sm-g530t-5-1-1-t3203476
It tripped knox, and naturally, I can not download updates from the phone. My last two phones never had any updates, so updates for this phone was never really a concern.
Now I would like to add the security updates.
I have downloaded the latest firmwares here
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-grand-prime/SM-G530T/
The update also shows up in Smart Switch, but it complains about rooted phone...
So I have the option of Odin, Flashfire, or Smart Switch to update the phone.
Question is, what is the most reliable way to update the phone to the latest firmware without rendering it useless?
I don't see a way to download the OTA patches seperate. I've read that the flashfire option leaves the phone rooted, and just updates the rom, while others have stated they lost root and the phone was buggy after the update...
It's my only phone so I don't enjoy crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
For future reference for those trying this...
For me, flashfire didn't work. I tried to do a full backup and partial backup, but every time the phone would hang at the T-Mobile screen at reboot. Had to pull the battery and SD/SIM. Never tried flashing with it.
Unrooted via SuperSU. Still couldn't update due to custom system.
Ran smart switch and ran the update. Rebooted and had updated system, but no wifi.
So, ran Odin installing the latest .md5 from Samsung, rebooted with latest system and wifi.
Then rooted using cf autoroot, so now have the latest system with root.
