Motorola recently announced that it will be updating the G4 Plus to Android Or as well. But it also stated that it usually updates the G line to only one major Android version. Does this mean that the they'll hang the G5 Plus at Oreo? Or does the marketing material say otherwise, and we could use it to get P for us as well?

Bro lets just see how much time does it time takes for moto (lenovo) to give us official Android O update:cyclops:
till december we will get oren and forget about P...that s for sure as of now, according to the above statement from moto!
I read on Lenovo forum a comment from Motorola employee that they have policy of one major os update in Moto G line. So android P for G5 is unlikely.
G4 plus is getting Oreo because Motorola advertised (by mistake, as they say now) it like that at the time of G4 release
1 major update policy for Moto G line is lies!
The original Moto G got updated from Jellybean to Kikat and Lollipop
The 2nd gen Moto G for updated from Kikat to Lollipop and Marshmallow
So? That was in the past.
I have hope in getting Android P in MoTo G5 PLUS
All hope is in us. I'm afraid that we will have to fight on social media and forums (Lenovo profiles, forums, etc.) to get Android P in future.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never see Android p on g5 through Lenovo. My Moto X Pure Edition (Clark) was promised nougat for a long time and when I switched to g5 a few weeks ago I still hadn't received the OTA

Everything changed on G3, they started to give just a major update
We just have to tell them that every other budget phone gets two upgrades so it is stupid that Motos can only get 1

You guys are forgetting that Lenovo owns Motorola
And the fact that they have released many useless phones in short span
Shows that they are not going put in the effort
And update every budget phone till 1 next major update

For this reason, when Google owns Motorola the updates are two major versions. With Lenovo only one major update. Nothing more.

If Lenovo's history continues... later this year (November or December) at the earliest, possibly beginning of next year.
Remember, even they don't even have Nougat out to all models that are getting yet... US users with the Moto X Pure are still waiting and that was a flagship for like 16 months.
Why do you want Oreo so much anyway? I don't see anything worthy waiting

I agree 100%. It's BS that Motorola won't update this phone. It is a 2015 model and only 7 or 8 months old. A good point was made in your link. All the Android One phones are supposed to get 6.0 per Google so I'm curious if Motorola will use Ram amount as the excuse.
edit... Well, I see that on the Android One site Google says... * UP TO 2 years* so I guess some Android One customers might be upset soon.

I mean that when motorola was in the Google's hands every phone was updated but things has changed after lenovo bought moto
btw lmao my old galaxy tab 2 had more updates than this motorola (4.0>4.1>4.2)
I'm really upset. I have XT1524 European model and it only had a Wifi patch, it wasn't even an update. I only bought Motorola because of updates, if the list is not updated I'm never going to have Motorola again. There's a lot of cheaper and better alternatives.

Since the internals of the Moto G 2014 is very similar to the Moto G 2013, I am hoping that they might roll out 6.0 to our devices also.
Fingers crossed.

Bad news, Motorola support page says this about the Moto G (2013)
MOTO G
This device will remain on Android 5.1 (Lollipop)
Do you have the latest Motorola software? Find out.
Shock horror, 2 year old hardware no longer getting updated... Long live custom ROMs.
Having owned a Desire HD and a Sensation which got only one major version upgrade, I'd say the 2013 G had a great run.

It's funny that the 2014 G is exactly the same hardware apart from the camera module and bigger screen (yet same resolution), and is getting the M update.
But yeah, there has to be a cutoff point somewhere even if it's the same product after all. 4.3 -> 4.4.2 -> 4.4.4 -> 5.0.2 -> 5.1, not bad at all! Alberto's AOSP will be excellent as usual.
Oh, well.
We can always count on a great dev to treat us crack-flashers and root junkies with some custom-ROM love.

Hey there Moto G Users! I'll be doing a custom Rom for the Moto G using Marshmallow and Lollipop... MarshPop is what it's going to be called... It maybe released as soon as I work all the bugs out of it... Expect it in the near future though! Since Marshmallow is basically Lollipop with Added features I maybe able to work all the issues out!
Cheers to all of the Developers! P.S. I've worked on the Transform Ultra from Samsung!

Moto G 2015 and Moto G Turbo are noticeably missing from the list... as well as all E models. A real let down.
Good thing we have great developers already working it for us.
With even more job cuts recently, I was beginning to suspect this would happen. There are now too many variations of handsets and too few engineers. At-least that's how it seems from the outside.
The worst part is that very little additional effort should be required to make an Osprey / Merlin release - considering Moto G Play (4th Gen) is near identical hardware.
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7247&idPhone2=8104
Disappointing. A big reason why I chose this phone was Motorola's track record from previous generations (which admittedly was showing signs of breakdown even then). Doesn't really matter anymore now that I have a custom rom though...

Okay, all problems aside, let's assume that they do indeed make an update to Nougat. How long would it take to develop with the already diminished amount of developers? The Marshmallow update took around 4 months if I'm not mistaken, and that was before a wave of lay-offs.
But it was clearly written when the turbo was launched...that it will get update upto android N....
This is extremely disappointing...i will never buy a moto phone again.
Going to **** at their Twitter account..
mmm .. why are they doing like Samsung
at this rate, no one will like Moto in india (as we have so many powerful competitors )
they cant make sales go up unless given us good support to old phones, the only reason i am proud of MotoDevices is that the fact it delivered fast updates till now..
hands down to Moto
When i purchased a Moto G3,my main focus was on getting software updates, thanks to the near stock Android experience.I overlooked many of the competitors priced more affordably, had bigger displays with better resolution and had more powerful processors and better battery life.I was only disappointed to see that it is to be supported for only one Android version update that is to marshmallow and no Nougat even if the hardware supports(seeing how well it runs on Nougat roms thanks to the developers).I think next time I should consider buying a phone with good hardware,eg. Redmi Note 3 and then flash a ROM in it to get the best of both worlds.
Even Redmi Note 3 has good developer support and has been successfully running Nougat 7.0.Heavily disappointed by LenovoMoto.
Now no confusion about SoC becoz same SoC phone getting Nougat. Really disappointed with Motorola about Moto g3. Now Motorola is not Motorola its Lenovo
Guys I was reading online, It is likely that the Moto G3 will also get the update. The problem is that this will only happen later, close to january.
there is still suspense on g3. maybe or not we got exciting news like last year g2 got MM update after a very long announcement(I think in December)
Probably the biggest reason osprey doesn't get N is because the chipset does not support Vulkan or openGL3.1 (like the 800 and 801 devices).
Merlin is the worst handset I received from Moto... No official remade or custom ROMs...
Waiting for 17th Oct for Moto Z Play release or get an IPhone at least its guranteed 4 years support...

I'm sure you are correct in that Vulkan / openGL3.1 is a key factor. However, to drop the upgrade for Moto G Play (4th Gen) so soon would cause a lot of bad media coverage.
Osprey / Merlin can run Stock Motorola Nougat - they even have a faster chipset - but it just looks like they had to draw a line somewhere on the list of devices to support.
I am wondering about the Motorola Moto E (3rd gen) being released only in September 2016. Perhaps because it has a limited market (Mediatek chipset main cause of not updating?) - the amount of protesting users will be very limited. I still expect some bad press over that decision.

From my perspective the majority of the development work is already done. However you have to consider the time and effort to trial / test the firmware running on Osprey / Merlin and then possibly resolving some small issues.

Even tho we have custom roms, it kinda stinks. I'm disappointed, for a device only one year old. A shame. It seems like no OEM cares about updates, and quite frankly, why should they? They're not making any money from releasing software updates, as Google is the one reaping the profits with their ads. Ugh.
Am I the only who it thinks that they will update it? The same occurred with the Moto E and marshmallow.

Hi all,
I am excited for the oreo ota which the moto g5 plus is going to receive. I have a few questions. Will Oreo drain more battery and how would it benefit the moto g5 plus. Also will we get an ota to 8.0 or 8.1 and should we expect an OTA to 9.0 in the future because the moto g3 and g4 only received one update.

Looking at how we haven't received any OTA for 7.1 let alone 7.1.2, I'd say it is very much likely that Moto will release an OTA for 8.0 and not 8.1 and definitely not 9.0 because we won't be getting the second major android update coz Moto only promised one major android update than the one that came with the phone. We might have a good run with the custom ROMs though
it's not moto anymore who decides it's ****in LENOVO
Ikr. God the CEO of Motorola and people from Google must be crying. Lenovo has turned Motorola into a cheap Chinese company, so many phones, terrible after market support and no updates. What have they done to Motorola. From two major software updates to just one update and no security patches for the moto g and turning the moto x from a flagship to a mid ranger.

can we sue Motorola for delaying the oreo update for g4+ as they promised during the launch event of the g4+
I realise this might be poking a hornet's nest...
What grounds would you sue them on? Did Motorola promise a timeframe to release the Oreo update, besides saying they would release the (unplanned) update at some point in time? I'm just curious about how your argument would go.
let me make this very clear, ALL devices which are scheduled to oreo of 2017 devices will get first the update. THEN work will be done of the g4 plus!! You can get pissed off as much as you want but you can only sue Motorola once Google themselves leave support for oreo and even then the g4 plus was not updated.
We were lucky to have nougat on time as you may know, g5 family didnt received oreo update. For now only z family and x4 got update as they are there premium mid-range and flagship phones. On the other hand they where not even planning to update our phone to oreo , so depay is given. We will not get update until g5 family get and they deserve more then us(they didnt even got 1 major update)
