Moto G 2015 and Moto G Turbo are noticeably missing from the list... as well as all E models. A real let down.
Good thing we have great developers already working it for us.

With even more job cuts recently, I was beginning to suspect this would happen. There are now too many variations of handsets and too few engineers. At-least that's how it seems from the outside.
The worst part is that very little additional effort should be required to make an Osprey / Merlin release - considering Moto G Play (4th Gen) is near identical hardware.
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7247&idPhone2=8104

Disappointing. A big reason why I chose this phone was Motorola's track record from previous generations (which admittedly was showing signs of breakdown even then). Doesn't really matter anymore now that I have a custom rom though...

Okay, all problems aside, let's assume that they do indeed make an update to Nougat. How long would it take to develop with the already diminished amount of developers? The Marshmallow update took around 4 months if I'm not mistaken, and that was before a wave of lay-offs.

But it was clearly written when the turbo was launched...that it will get update upto android N....
This is extremely disappointing...i will never buy a moto phone again.
Going to **** at their Twitter account..

mmm .. why are they doing like Samsung
at this rate, no one will like Moto in india (as we have so many powerful competitors )
they cant make sales go up unless given us good support to old phones, the only reason i am proud of MotoDevices is that the fact it delivered fast updates till now..
hands down to Moto

When i purchased a Moto G3,my main focus was on getting software updates, thanks to the near stock Android experience.I overlooked many of the competitors priced more affordably, had bigger displays with better resolution and had more powerful processors and better battery life.I was only disappointed to see that it is to be supported for only one Android version update that is to marshmallow and no Nougat even if the hardware supports(seeing how well it runs on Nougat roms thanks to the developers).I think next time I should consider buying a phone with good hardware,eg. Redmi Note 3 and then flash a ROM in it to get the best of both worlds.
Even Redmi Note 3 has good developer support and has been successfully running Nougat 7.0.Heavily disappointed by LenovoMoto.

Now no confusion about SoC becoz same SoC phone getting Nougat. Really disappointed with Motorola about Moto g3. Now Motorola is not Motorola its Lenovo

Guys I was reading online, It is likely that the Moto G3 will also get the update. The problem is that this will only happen later, close to january.

there is still suspense on g3. maybe or not we got exciting news like last year g2 got MM update after a very long announcement(I think in December)

Probably the biggest reason osprey doesn't get N is because the chipset does not support Vulkan or openGL3.1 (like the 800 and 801 devices).

Merlin is the worst handset I received from Moto... No official remade or custom ROMs...
Waiting for 17th Oct for Moto Z Play release or get an IPhone at least its guranteed 4 years support...

Check the official list .their is a Moto G4 Play. Which have same Chipset as Moto G3. I think Motorola don't want to upgrade Moto G3

Yeah that's weird. But their isn't any other explanation, apart from the 1 gb variant not capable maybe

I'm sure you are correct in that Vulkan / openGL3.1 is a key factor. However, to drop the upgrade for Moto G Play (4th Gen) so soon would cause a lot of bad media coverage.
Osprey / Merlin can run Stock Motorola Nougat - they even have a faster chipset - but it just looks like they had to draw a line somewhere on the list of devices to support.
I am wondering about the Motorola Moto E (3rd gen) being released only in September 2016. Perhaps because it has a limited market (Mediatek chipset main cause of not updating?) - the amount of protesting users will be very limited. I still expect some bad press over that decision.

From my perspective the majority of the development work is already done. However you have to consider the time and effort to trial / test the firmware running on Osprey / Merlin and then possibly resolving some small issues.

yes i am using one....but that doesn't overshadow the fact that we got ONLY ONE major Android version update and poor security patch update support for a device close to stock. I know posting these stuff on XDA wouldn't bring Nougat officially to my device, this is just like saying to myself.Custom ROMs are almost never as stable as stock and I seriously miss Moto Display on custom ROMs.

Even tho we have custom roms, it kinda stinks. I'm disappointed, for a device only one year old. A shame. It seems like no OEM cares about updates, and quite frankly, why should they? They're not making any money from releasing software updates, as Google is the one reaping the profits with their ads. Ugh.

Am I the only who it thinks that they will update it? The same occurred with the Moto E and marshmallow.

Since the internals of the Moto G 2014 is very similar to the Moto G 2013, I am hoping that they might roll out 6.0 to our devices also.
Fingers crossed.
I think I'll just wait for the AOSP build from Alberto97.
Same here Buddy @moralesnery
The good news is that Google released the Nexus Android 6.0 images. The bad is that the AOSP isn't updated

some days will pass before wee see the release of the 6.0 code to AOSP.
Bad news, Motorola support page says this about the Moto G (2013)
MOTO G
This device will remain on Android 5.1 (Lollipop)
Do you have the latest Motorola software? Find out.
Shock horror, 2 year old hardware no longer getting updated... Long live custom ROMs.
Having owned a Desire HD and a Sensation which got only one major version upgrade, I'd say the 2013 G had a great run.
Sent from my XT1572 using Tapatalk
It's funny that the 2014 G is exactly the same hardware apart from the camera module and bigger screen (yet same resolution), and is getting the M update.
But yeah, there has to be a cutoff point somewhere even if it's the same product after all. 4.3 -> 4.4.2 -> 4.4.4 -> 5.0.2 -> 5.1, not bad at all! Alberto's AOSP will be excellent as usual.
Oh, well.
We can always count on a great dev to treat us crack-flashers and root junkies with some custom-ROM love.
Thanks XDA DEVs!

Don't believe anything unless you see it published in an Official Motorola account (G+,Twitter, Fb) or a serious tech Blog (or here in the news section).
Dont play with my heart
it is sad it wont get official 6.0 since android one phones will get it, also moto e, moto g 2014, etc
it is not about specs, it it just about age
but yes, compared to samsung, and other motorola did a good job, not perfect
i believe nexus 4 should get it too
Hey there Moto G Users! I'll be doing a custom Rom for the Moto G using Marshmallow and Lollipop... MarshPop is what it's going to be called... It maybe released as soon as I work all the bugs out of it... Expect it in the near future though! Since Marshmallow is basically Lollipop with Added features I maybe able to work all the issues out!
Cheers to all of the Developers! P.S. I've worked on the Transform Ultra from Samsung!
Thanks for Participation in reading!

Warning- Don´t buy this phone (Moto e 2nd gen)

Motorola promise to not forget updates for this phone, and after a few months they drop support. We are not going to receive Marshmallow.

So better to go for another phone and stay away from this.

A good deal if you can get one for < $50, which is what the SD410 variant was going for in the US. I'll still use mine as a secondary device, but it would be nice to receive future stagefright fixes.
Runs great on 5.1

well that was expected... I don't think that any phone on this price point will get 6.0 (expcet android one)
They only actually guaranteed "1" update which a couple devices have already received. I also know soak tests are still ongoing for some GSM variants...to be honest I'm not terribly upset. I picked up 4 of these for less than $220.00 for my work phones and they do the job. While not upset I am surprised given the nearly 18 month support to the 1st Gen Moto G and X...I did purchase a new X Style and I "hope" Lenovo and Motorola give it at least 2 version support.

I refer to Motorola official updates :good:
Kind of don't like how they let their phones get locked down by carriers if the carrier asks them either. I guess they don't have the muscle of Google or Samsung or Apple to say no but it still pisses me off how they preached developer friendlyness and then lock their phones down for carriers every time. Wish the carriers would get regulated and become utilities faster they don't deserve the profits if they are going to act like monopolies.
Can any of you suggest a similar phone that will be getting marshmallow?
I'm looking for something with decent battery life, smaller than a nexus 5, a torch is bonus.
Don't care about price.
Edit: I might just buy this anyway and use CM - i'm sick of expensive phones with terrible battery life - would rather a cheap one with no updates that lasts for a while.

Do you have 5.1? If yes then ok but if not you probably hasn't used any average phone before. This phone is very very slow and laggy on 5.0.2, I was using xpeira m (dual core low end phone, specs way worse than moto e) running cm11 and it was way way faster than this one...

I'm on 5.02 and this is one of the fastest phones i owned. My previous was Xperia Z1 and that bastard was very laggy one even with it's nice specs.
It´s a good phone, but what bothers me is the promise of updates and we will be in 5.0.2 forever.
What's a good alternate 4.5" android phone? That's the main reason I want a Moto E, that it's physically small. I find even the Moto G way too big to use with one hand.
(Oh, and a microSD slot. And a decent battery. You know, so I can actually use the phone.)

There are similar priced LG phones with sd410, few similar models. Maybe their software isn't so good but there is always unofficial support. At least they have flashlight. You can check Moto G lte too (1st gen), with 4.4.4 it's smooth like butter.

It's really shocking ,, although it wldnt have mattered more ,bcoz what's in a name after all but to my and others Moto Fans full disaapointement ,They have clearly said in their statement from 2016 there will not be low to mid devices by Moto , those will be replaced by Lenovo Vibe series ,.
Thats means We are the owners of pretty last G and E series . Lenovo Vibe will be with their crap Lenovo UI ,, yesterday had a chance to play with Lenonvo K3 note ,, what a crap that device is , hangs like anything,15 min use and device start getting warm, and Ui is plain ugly and totally jerking ass even its hardware on par with G . 15 min usage and I started hating that device . It's really foolish if those G and E series will be kiled for Lenovo Vibe ,,
Moto name will be used for premium X series and tht wld be not more than 2 years after that Moto will also go and only Lenonvo will left.
This is transitioning phase ,they want to make it clear that they will replace Moto by Lenovo ,so they taking small steps in that direction ..
So yes Moto is already gone in mid to low and ,for premium X ,2 years max, after seeing all this .

This doesn’t mean that the Moto line is dead, however. Moto smartphones will still be in production in the coming years, complete with their familiar M-brand symbol. However, these devices will also have Lenovo’s branding and iconography.

[PETITION] Android Nougat Update for Osprey and Merlin

Please discuss, post support and spread news about this petition: https://www.change.org/p/motorola-please-include-moto-g-3rd-gen-for-android-nougat-update
Motorola, please include Moto G (3rd Gen) for Android Nougat UpdateOn 4th October 2016 you announced on your official blog which handsets would be getting the Android 7.0 (Nougat) update.
Absent from the list was the Moto G 3rd Gen (Osprey) and Moto G Turbo Edition (Merlin) - making them historically the first Moto G phones to receive only one major Android update. Both Moto G 1st Gen (Falcon) and 2nd Gen (Titan) where given two Android updates - KitKat and Lollipop in the case of 'Falcon,' and Lollipop and Marshmallow for 'Titan.'
The abandoning of support for both 'Osprey' after 8 months (Android 6.0.1 was released in March 2016) and 'Merlin' after only 3 months shows that the Moto brand now will no longer respect the previous practise of providing ‘18 months of update support.’
Included on the current official Nougat update device list is the Moto G Play (4th Gen) - a handset with weaker specifications than both 'Osprey' and 'Merlin.'
The issue is not technical limitation. You appear to have simply decided your last generation Moto G handsets are no longer important.
The Moto G Play uses the exact same chipset and GPU as 'Osprey,' but runs at a lower CPU clock-speed. This profound hardware similarity suggests that in the process of making the update for Moto G Play; much of the work needed to produce a Nougat update for 'Osprey' would be completed.
Moto X Play (also on the Nougat update list) uses the exact same chipset and GPU as Moto G Turbo Edition - making both devices Vulkan compatible.
Moto G is a mid-range device, but your update support for it shrinks with each year. Why should people have confidence in your products when you so casually drop support for your best-selling phone?

To play the devil's advocate, why does anyone care about Motorola updating the G3 to Nougat when it 1) has an unlockable bootloader and 2) is on the list for official CM14? This isn't an iPhone. You don't have to depend on the manufacturer for updates. Honestly I think Motorola was counting on G3 users flashing CM14.
Personally, I don't care if any phone I own has OTA updates as long as I have glorious CM.

Thanks.
@argentwarrior20 - We still need fresh kernel sources, at least we *should* get them. And fresh proprietary blobs too.
There are a lot of users who want to stay stock or doesn't know about community development. They should get official updates too, we can't forget about them this easy [emoji106]

correct. and volte is only available in stock. so most people dont use cm14 or anyother custom roms now. coz of jio volte .. people still needs stock update
i'm in ... there is no true reason for motorola to drop Osprey or Merlin from N update when the play is included
@argentwarrior20 - You are assuming battery-life and performance is just as good in CM/AOSP, as on a Motorola developed Stock ROM. No disrespect to the XDA Devs, but Motorola can optimize and tweak for a superior experience. Also as already mentioned, specific features may only be supported on Stock. If it is at all possible, you should want the option of Stock Android 7.0 to be available.
Im in,
although I seriously doubt that g3 and g power wont get the update.I mean, they arent even old, plus they are compatible,if they dont get the update the one to blame is totally the crappy lenovo which provides just 1 major update(for example, lenovo a6000 and tab 2 series but pretty much almost every their device can be here) and that update is so buggy that it either takes them 1 year to fix the bugs and optimise it or they dont fix them at all.
I'm in!
I too will join with all you guys... Signed the petition..

Android P update for the G5 Plus

Motorola recently announced that it will be updating the G4 Plus to Android Or as well. But it also stated that it usually updates the G line to only one major Android version. Does this mean that the they'll hang the G5 Plus at Oreo? Or does the marketing material say otherwise, and we could use it to get P for us as well?

Bro lets just see how much time does it time takes for moto (lenovo) to give us official Android O update:cyclops:
till december we will get oren and forget about P...that s for sure as of now, according to the above statement from moto!
I read on Lenovo forum a comment from Motorola employee that they have policy of one major os update in Moto G line. So android P for G5 is unlikely.
G4 plus is getting Oreo because Motorola advertised (by mistake, as they say now) it like that at the time of G4 release
1 major update policy for Moto G line is lies!
The original Moto G got updated from Jellybean to Kikat and Lollipop
The 2nd gen Moto G for updated from Kikat to Lollipop and Marshmallow
So? That was in the past.
I have hope in getting Android P in MoTo G5 PLUS
All hope is in us. I'm afraid that we will have to fight on social media and forums (Lenovo profiles, forums, etc.) to get Android P in future.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never see Android p on g5 through Lenovo. My Moto X Pure Edition (Clark) was promised nougat for a long time and when I switched to g5 a few weeks ago I still hadn't received the OTA

Everything changed on G3, they started to give just a major update
We just have to tell them that every other budget phone gets two upgrades so it is stupid that Motos can only get 1

Motorola was a different company then, it wasn't owned by Lenovo for a start.

I sold my Moto X Play for the same reason, promised 7 at the beginning of the year and months later still no OTA.
You guys are forgetting that Lenovo owns Motorola
And the fact that they have released many useless phones in short span
Shows that they are not going put in the effort
And update every budget phone till 1 next major update

For this reason, when Google owns Motorola the updates are two major versions. With Lenovo only one major update. Nothing more.
My next phone will be another brand... :crying:
Me too
NOKIA
Ok fine, but when will we get the Oreo update?

If Lenovo's history continues... later this year (November or December) at the earliest, possibly beginning of next year.
Remember, even they don't even have Nougat out to all models that are getting yet... US users with the Moto X Pure are still waiting and that was a flagship for like 16 months.
Why do you want Oreo so much anyway? I don't see anything worthy waiting
