Future Oreo Update - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I am excited for the oreo ota which the moto g5 plus is going to receive. I have a few questions. Will Oreo drain more battery and how would it benefit the moto g5 plus. Also will we get an ota to 8.0 or 8.1 and should we expect an OTA to 9.0 in the future because the moto g3 and g4 only received one update.

Looking at how we haven't received any OTA for 7.1 let alone 7.1.2, I'd say it is very much likely that Moto will release an OTA for 8.0 and not 8.1 and definitely not 9.0 because we won't be getting the second major android update coz Moto only promised one major android update than the one that came with the phone. We might have a good run with the custom ROMs though

it's not moto anymore who decides it's ****in LENOVO

Ikr. God the CEO of Motorola and people from Google must be crying. Lenovo has turned Motorola into a cheap Chinese company, so many phones, terrible after market support and no updates. What have they done to Motorola. From two major software updates to just one update and no security patches for the moto g and turning the moto x from a flagship to a mid ranger.

I really hope that Motorola breaks away from Lenovo and gets back to what they used to be

[PETITION] Android Nougat Update for Osprey and Merlin

Please discuss, post support and spread news about this petition: https://www.change.org/p/motorola-please-include-moto-g-3rd-gen-for-android-nougat-update
Motorola, please include Moto G (3rd Gen) for Android Nougat UpdateOn 4th October 2016 you announced on your official blog which handsets would be getting the Android 7.0 (Nougat) update.
Absent from the list was the Moto G 3rd Gen (Osprey) and Moto G Turbo Edition (Merlin) - making them historically the first Moto G phones to receive only one major Android update. Both Moto G 1st Gen (Falcon) and 2nd Gen (Titan) where given two Android updates - KitKat and Lollipop in the case of 'Falcon,' and Lollipop and Marshmallow for 'Titan.'
The abandoning of support for both 'Osprey' after 8 months (Android 6.0.1 was released in March 2016) and 'Merlin' after only 3 months shows that the Moto brand now will no longer respect the previous practise of providing ‘18 months of update support.’
Included on the current official Nougat update device list is the Moto G Play (4th Gen) - a handset with weaker specifications than both 'Osprey' and 'Merlin.'
The issue is not technical limitation. You appear to have simply decided your last generation Moto G handsets are no longer important.
The Moto G Play uses the exact same chipset and GPU as 'Osprey,' but runs at a lower CPU clock-speed. This profound hardware similarity suggests that in the process of making the update for Moto G Play; much of the work needed to produce a Nougat update for 'Osprey' would be completed.
Moto X Play (also on the Nougat update list) uses the exact same chipset and GPU as Moto G Turbo Edition - making both devices Vulkan compatible.
Moto G is a mid-range device, but your update support for it shrinks with each year. Why should people have confidence in your products when you so casually drop support for your best-selling phone?

To play the devil's advocate, why does anyone care about Motorola updating the G3 to Nougat when it 1) has an unlockable bootloader and 2) is on the list for official CM14? This isn't an iPhone. You don't have to depend on the manufacturer for updates. Honestly I think Motorola was counting on G3 users flashing CM14.
Personally, I don't care if any phone I own has OTA updates as long as I have glorious CM.

@argentwarrior20 - We still need fresh kernel sources, at least we *should* get them. And fresh proprietary blobs too.
There are a lot of users who want to stay stock or doesn't know about community development. They should get official updates too, we can't forget about them this easy [emoji106]

correct. and volte is only available in stock. so most people dont use cm14 or anyother custom roms now. coz of jio volte .. people still needs stock update
i'm in ... there is no true reason for motorola to drop Osprey or Merlin from N update when the play is included
@argentwarrior20 - You are assuming battery-life and performance is just as good in CM/AOSP, as on a Motorola developed Stock ROM. No disrespect to the XDA Devs, but Motorola can optimize and tweak for a superior experience. Also as already mentioned, specific features may only be supported on Stock. If it is at all possible, you should want the option of Stock Android 7.0 to be available.
Im in,
although I seriously doubt that g3 and g power wont get the update.I mean, they arent even old, plus they are compatible,if they dont get the update the one to blame is totally the crappy lenovo which provides just 1 major update(for example, lenovo a6000 and tab 2 series but pretty much almost every their device can be here) and that update is so buggy that it either takes them 1 year to fix the bugs and optimise it or they dont fix them at all.
I'm in!

Android P update for the G5 Plus

Motorola recently announced that it will be updating the G4 Plus to Android Or as well. But it also stated that it usually updates the G line to only one major Android version. Does this mean that the they'll hang the G5 Plus at Oreo? Or does the marketing material say otherwise, and we could use it to get P for us as well?

Bro lets just see how much time does it time takes for moto (lenovo) to give us official Android O update:cyclops:
till december we will get oren and forget about P...that s for sure as of now, according to the above statement from moto!
I read on Lenovo forum a comment from Motorola employee that they have policy of one major os update in Moto G line. So android P for G5 is unlikely.
G4 plus is getting Oreo because Motorola advertised (by mistake, as they say now) it like that at the time of G4 release
1 major update policy for Moto G line is lies!
The original Moto G got updated from Jellybean to Kikat and Lollipop
The 2nd gen Moto G for updated from Kikat to Lollipop and Marshmallow
So? That was in the past.
I have hope in getting Android P in MoTo G5 PLUS
All hope is in us. I'm afraid that we will have to fight on social media and forums (Lenovo profiles, forums, etc.) to get Android P in future.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never see Android p on g5 through Lenovo. My Moto X Pure Edition (Clark) was promised nougat for a long time and when I switched to g5 a few weeks ago I still hadn't received the OTA

Everything changed on G3, they started to give just a major update
We just have to tell them that every other budget phone gets two upgrades so it is stupid that Motos can only get 1

You guys are forgetting that Lenovo owns Motorola
And the fact that they have released many useless phones in short span

For this reason, when Google owns Motorola the updates are two major versions. With Lenovo only one major update. Nothing more.

If Lenovo's history continues... later this year (November or December) at the earliest, possibly beginning of next year.
Remember, even they don't even have Nougat out to all models that are getting yet... US users with the Moto X Pure are still waiting and that was a flagship for like 16 months.
Why do you want Oreo so much anyway? I don't see anything worthy waiting

Oreo update

Hi,
So finally Moto has decided that there will be an Oreo update for G4 plus. But they have ignored G4 non-plus version. This is really pathetic on their part. The phone was released in May 2016 only and the company is pulling the plug after a mere 1 and a half years. There is not much difference between the phones so that is any I selected the non-plus version. Is there a way to contact their management or the concerned department so that we can have our voices heard? Any petition going on about the same?
Thanks

Don't expect too much from them. We could rely on custom ROMS.. just be patient.. at least one oreo ROM should be here
Yes ROM's will be there but I don't think that I will get time to flash as schedule is way too busy nowadays. I am not able to find time to even backup data from my phone so flashing is a big no, OTA yes.
so i guess no ports, right? :/
Oreo port
Well, couldn't someone port the g4 official Oreo update to g4? As said previously, the phones are practically identical. Should eb no problem to sideload the g4 plus update on the g4.
moto g4 and g4 plus are athene version, they are the same build, so it will work on both

Exactly. So, just grab the update zip from g4 plus, flash it on your g4, and you have Oreo. Yay.
There are some hardware differences on the two phones so the update may not work, so don't just grab a zip and think it will solve the trick. Depending on what Lenovo (the owners of Moto) do in their code it might be an easy or hard port depending on what they do. Also nobody has come up with a way to root and install anything once we got Nougat n these mid range phones so I am not as hopeful there is a developer still working on this phone. If you want Oreo (trust me I'm debating too) we may need to upgrade to a newer phone than a 2 year old one when Oreo does come out for G4+. The companies have built in the obsolescence on these phones after 2 years. So they can continue to make profit by not offering upgrades on every device; even Apple doesn't think about the 3 and 4 series anymore in their IOS roll-outs and slows it down on them. So we might need to save the pennies and look deals come out in November.

[PETITION] Bumping up Moto G³ to Oreo

So, last year we didn't really succeed to reach the goal of the petition to Motorola to upgrade our phones to Nougat.
This year, I believe that Moto will see this request and make an Official Oreo for the Moto G³/Turbo Edition.

That just seems to be the case. But don't be that negative. Let's be honest - we won't lose anything if we at least try. It won't matter for me, personally, if Moto decides to not update the phone. But it's important for the other users. Some of them may be tech-savy but just don't want to risk damaging their device. Others may just want a stock variant of a ROM available in XDA. and the non-techsavy people don't care about updates because they don't understand them anyway. If Moto doesn't push the update to the people that don't understand computers, those people may think their battery life is worse than the other phones because Moto G³ is "a bad phone". They don't care about software. Everyone knows friends like this. But the Moto G³ is not an obsolete device. It has nice specs for Android Oreo, and even better specs for Android GO.
So, I personally believe that Moto will at least start to think, whether or not they should abandon their next phones after several months.

There is a fully-fledged Android Oreo ROM available. There is no reason why you would want Android GO. It's a water-downed version of Android Oreo. I said Android GO as a stock ROM if it is better for the Moto G³.

Yeah, that won't happen any time soon.. this is lenovo remember? Also no company has ever bumped a device for example from 5.0 to 7.0, as far as i know.
Hmm... That may be the case here, too (I'm 98% sure). But the thing is - Moto should learn from their mistakes. I think that it's a mistake to guarantee "2 year full support" and then dump the device after just several months.

I don't even believe it. The thing is, there should be somethig to catch Motorola's eyes. They actually still want to do only one major OS upgrade per device. Source - Motorola Official Blog - Say hello to Android Oreo:
Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

Well, every older Moto G device (falcon, titan) recieved 2 major OS updates (falcon: Android Kitkat and Lollipop) (Titan: Lollipop and Marshamallow), meaning that the Moto G 2015 family (osprey and merlin) are the first and only moto g family to recieve only 1 major OS update. The G4 Play and the Moto X Style have the same or lower specs than the Moto G3 and G3 Turbo, but they DID recieve nougat, so the "too low specs" answer is just a lie. I personally own this device, and I´m using the 8GB version, wich might be a little too slow for Nougat or Oreo, but the 16GB and Turbo Variants would run those OS without any problem.

Sue Motorola

can we sue Motorola for delaying the oreo update for g4+ as they promised during the launch event of the g4+
I realise this might be poking a hornet's nest...
What grounds would you sue them on? Did Motorola promise a timeframe to release the Oreo update, besides saying they would release the (unplanned) update at some point in time? I'm just curious about how your argument would go.
let me make this very clear, ALL devices which are scheduled to oreo of 2017 devices will get first the update. THEN work will be done of the g4 plus!! You can get pissed off as much as you want but you can only sue Motorola once Google themselves leave support for oreo and even then the g4 plus was not updated.
We were lucky to have nougat on time as you may know, g5 family didnt received oreo update. For now only z family and x4 got update as they are there premium mid-range and flagship phones. On the other hand they where not even planning to update our phone to oreo , so depay is given. We will not get update until g5 family get and they deserve more then us(they didnt even got 1 major update)

Keep in mind that last year, in February-March we already had Nougat on our devices, but the owners of G5 series didn't received Oreo and we're already in the beginning of May. See don't have any reasons to be mad at Motorola because they didn't update the G4 Plus to Oreo, as long as the last year phones didn't received their updates.
