[Question] Root without bootloader unlocking. - LG G6 Questions and Answers

I Know this question probably has been asked a thousand time but.
As I only need root for my daily use (meaning - no custom recovery) I've searched the net for a week now looking for a possible way to root the LG G6 H870 without unlocking the bootloader.
I've rooted and unlocked my Android phones for 5 years now so I know the process. The reason I'm asking for non unlocking methood to root my G6 is because There's probably an unlock counter and I don't to loosing my Warrenty after only one week after the purchase.
Kingo and King root are my suspects. anyone have experience with one of this tool? and know for sure the android version (not the PC one which does unlock bootloader) really root without unlocking?

It's impossibile, because the locked bootloader have a verification of what is booting (kernel, recovery, rom). When unlocked, this verification is off and you're able to inject root because the system veificstion check is off.

Soft Root only applies after the boot it is possible or atleast it was possible before.
are you positively sure that's not possible in LG G6?

I'm sure. Root without unlocking bootloader is possible, only in case the bootloader don't have a signature verification of partitions (kernel, system, recovery). I think that LG G6 have a signature verification of system partition, like Huawei smartphone.

Dears,
Any update if we can root without bootloader unlocking?!
Thnx

Hi there! Has anyone tried to root tbeir Huawei P9 Lite without a PC?
I've run across an app called Kingroot. Has someone tried that? Is it safe to use or is it malware?

As long as your bootloader is locked you don't have any chance to root it via any app.
At least for now isn't any method to root android 6.0 with a locked bootloader

Systemless root requires an unlocked bootloader, right? Can you guide or point to a link refering to systemless root?

Right, systemless root require some patching to boot.img, and can be achieved simply by flashing latest superSu.zip from TWRP recovery on your device.
There is the tricky part. You will say that if you have TWRP recovery, the update will not succeed.
The update will succeed because your device have also the stock recovery somewhere hidden
Just to be clear, and for confirmation
If you press the volume down and power with device shutdown, you will enter in twrp.
And if you press the power button first and after the first info on screen you press volume down 3 times, you will enter in stock EMUI recovery.
Nobody noticed that?
P.S. I've recommend everyone to have a backup first.
Specifically if you depends of your device. And you care about your data

Yes, I have noticed this. There are actually 2 recovery partitions. It seems that Huawei built in an emergency 2nd recovery. I think the second recovery will allow you to restore the stock recovery but I have not tried it.
The second recovery has appeared automatically when I botched some rooting attempts but i did not know about the key combo's

Well, i know that is off topic but CONGRATULATIONS SIR!
I've seen now on your website that you boot up cm 13 ( with a bit of headache)
This is a huge step for our device.
And if you need testers I will be happy to sacrifice my device for logs and bugs reports
Is now a method to root 6.0 locked bootloader???
So, I've to unlock the boot, change recovery and then I can root by app?
If I use systemless I'll receive the other...
Correct?

I would not worry about that.
Newest firmwares always show up as downloads here in the forum way before they get delivered via OTA to your device.
Updating manually is really easy on this device so I always prefer this method anyway.
Any methods to root without unlocking bootloader?
I cannot obtain the password to unlock the phone... How can I do?

LG G4 Root for Marshmallow on V20G. How to do it?

Hi!
I recently updated my LG G4 from V20A (I think) to V20G. My bootloader is unlocked and I had TWRP/root prior. Now, my TWRP and root seem to be gone. I've tried a number of things, but nothing seems to work. All root solutions seem to involve a pre-rooted kernel V20A. I presume I need V20G to match the software version - is that correct?
Where do I start?
Thank you! :good:

Which version of TWRP and SuperSU have you used?
I assume you updated to V20G with LGUp or some other tool by flashing a KDZ. You cannot root any MarshMallow version, you must downgrade to a Lollipop version and root it.

You're wrong. In MarshMallow, if you have bootloader unlock, you can flash a Custom Recovery and then, from this recovery install SuperSU. But you must use some lastest version of SuperSU (it can autopatch BOOT before install).

My bad then. I do not know why everybody kept saying that you cannot root a Marshmallow stock Rom. I guess they were talking about all G4s. It makes sense that unlocking the bootloader could allow writing a custom recovery.

Yes, that's what I understand as well - but there's so much conflicting information out there, and not a clear step-by-step guide on what to do. My bootloader is unlocked. How do I proceed? It seems that flashing TWRP only works by first loading it from fastboot and then flashing it - but I'm not sure. I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thank you! :good:

I've a LG G4 (H815), but I use TWRP Recovery for LG G4 T-Mobile USA (H811) because for some reason, the first don't let me boot with it. Anyway, with the smartphone ON:
Connect it to Computer
Copy to internal memory a SuperSU
Reboot in bootloader/fastboot mode:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Boot with TWRP Recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img
From TWRP Recovery, accept to allow it make changes, and 'install' the SuperSU
Reboot smatphone normally, and that is all.

YES! This worked and was so easy. Thank you, THANK YOU! You're a genius! This should be a sticky. It's so much easier than so many other guides out there. Also - weird that one has to use a different version of TWRP for it to work.
A big thank you once again! :good::good::good::good::good:
Did the update (...or root) wipe the device or does it do an in-place upgrade? Also, did you do the V20G upgrade from the notification that came up on the phone? Thanks for your help

Hi!
If you're rooted, the OTA update does not work and won't install. I'm not sure if it works via LG Bridge - I think it won't wipe anything. My device was wiped because of incorrect TWRP installation. Good luck!

He should have used H815 one... Using H811 on H815 can make you a lot of problems like system partition might be on bootloader or so, so it's risky to do anything in recovery not designed for your specific model

Hello all!
I'm having problems with Windows 10 and all the programs to deal with my P880... Yesterday I tried
to unlock the bootloader on my new G4 H515 but didn't worked.
The original software was verizon (at least it looked like), I downgraded to lollipop (V10b and V10d, both euro open) but, using the LG official method to unlock the bootloader didn't worked.
In adb the first command didn't do nothing, the second one reboot the phone but only shows a guide and how to reboot the phone, when I tried to go for the third one nothing happens.
The device is detected only for a few seconds, even by the original LGMobile Support Tool, after force the detection by disconnecting and connecting the cable the phone reboot in software upgrade
and its not detected anymore...
Anyone have the same problems and/or any solution?
Install Win7 is not an option, processor is not supported by Win7.
Thank you

Solved!
Everytime we need to reboot the bootloader (or give another command in cmd) we need to uninstal the standard "kedacom usb device" driver and install manually the LG adb drivers.
BTW, was UNLOCKED running V20G-EUR-XX
I have an LG G4 815 which never rooted and I am not sure about bootloader (probably locked). I am on latest MM v20g. Is there anyway to root my phone so I can install apps require root? Without of course wiping my data?

We all want a unlocked bootloader on the le pro 3

Lets tweet to @jiayueting and @leecoGlobal and @LemallUSA about unlocking the bootloader. With all of us, they'll have to respond.
https://twitter.com/jrlowe/status/796538362744242176
This is what I received from a Le Engineer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Le Pro 3 support Android Pay function, so it has no plan to provide the option of unlocking bootloader in order to protect users’ security and our content business. If you really want this function, you can consider Le S3 model instead and hope it meets your mobile needs.
As we knew, other devices supporting the Android pay also lock bootloader, something like Samsung and LG brand. From security perspective, it is definitively safer to lock the bootloader by default. It’s also a default US carrier requirement.
Hope it helps.

That was a LeMiddle finger.
I don't want to create an account over there just to respond, but you might want to point out to Le Engineer that the Pixel and Pixel XL - you know the GOOGLE PHONES - they have unlockable bootloaders.
After taking the 58019 OTA update, I was able to run the ADB fastboot command to unlock the bootloader. It appeared to work, but I haven't attempted flashing TWRP or SuperSU yet.

The wording changed on the return site as well, it now says that you have to pay shipping if you return it without a defect. Because it did not say that originally can we get around that?
This sounds very promising... Hopefully you can also flash twrp recovery and we are good to go...

Did you do the bootloader unlocking flash able zip method from in the US LP3 persistent bl unlock thread? You have to boot twrp in memory after temporarily unlocking and then format data to remove encryption. Then flash that bl unlocking zip. Then unlock > reboot > after setup reboot to BL (now perm unlocked) and flash twrp to recovery partition via fastboot. It will then stay there, and you can flash SuperSU. Worked for me on 727. Currently rooted, using soft keys, BusyBox and Xposed installed.

Freshly bought Mi A1 - to OTA or not to OTA?

Hey guys,
want to mod my freshly bought Mi A1 to the max, but I'm not sure if i should OTA first or better start modding right away?
I already unlocked the bootloader and it didnt wipe it - it also has 7.1 installed still. Generally I'm usually reluctant to do official updates because they usually make modding harder - but I tried booting the treble TWRP installer .img through fastboot (without installing it) and it failed because some partition was missing it said.. so I just want to hear if OTA is necessary to use the latest custom roms or if i can keep the old bootloader etc?
Would be cool if someone who knows could say smth about that.
Or is updating through OTA actually recommended even when not planning to ever use stock roms?

If security matters for you yes
The only thing you'll share with a custom ROM is the bootloader
Since may update locking or relocking the bootloader will wipe your data
It's your choice
but it will still work as easy as before to unlock/lock with just a fastboot command, right?
and will a custom rom work with a locked bootloader? Like first unlock, install custom rom + kernel, then relock?

It will always be that easy to unlock and relock the bootloader
No don't relock on anything that is out of stock (custom kernel , magisk, custom ROM etc) this will lead to a softbrick and you'll have to be on edl more to reflash a stock rom
What's the interest of having a locked bootloader with a custom ROM? You won't pass the safety net anyway
Just keep it unlock
You can do ota with an unlocked bootloader

well once you have everything "perfectly set up" updates can ruin it. but yea relocking the bootloader really was a stupid idea - it was the idea to make it tamper proof but since custom kernels wont boot with locked bootloader that wouldnt work.
