Hi guys!
Created an account so I could ask everyone for some help with my NEXUS 4. A part of the screen has been unresponsive since this morning because of that I am unable to unlock the phone using pattern. I have been meaning to buy a new phone but I need the photos and videos to be recovered from the current one.
When I plug the phone onto my PC using the USB cable, the phone shows up as a portable device instead of NEXUS 4 storage which leads me to believe the either the USB debugging is off OR the phone needs to be unlocked for it to show up as a storage. Therefore, I am also unable to recover the data that way. I have contacted google regarding this they put me through to LG and neither of them was able to help me with this situation.
So, Is there any other way I am able to recover the data from the phone? Please let me know and thank you all so much in advance.
what windows system ?
If 8 or plus, maybe using a windows 7 desktop

Hi guys,
How am I supposed to safely disconnect my Samsung Focus from my iMac? There's no icon of the device in the finder windows or in windows phone 7 connector.
Thanks!
Just unplug it. It is not connected as a USB mass storage. Hence there is no need for safely disconnect. It is always safe to disconnect as long as you are not in the middle of syncing.
Is it true for Zune on the PC as well? or do I have to safely remove it when i'm using windows?
Yes, same on the pc side.

This is... unreal.
Doesn't it ruin the internal memory or something? I never heard of a similar storage device.
One more time, it does not show up as a storage device. So there is nothing an OS can ruin.
On PC, even most flash drives are automatically recognized and configured in a way that can be removed anytime without fearing of ruining of the storage device.
Got it. okay, thanks!
One more question: if I delete all the AT&T apps, where can I find them if I want to reinstall them?
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but it's Sunday night and I've spent 2 days trying to sort it out - Mr Nexus is about to take a trip through the window...
* My new Nexus 7 (purchased on 31/12/12) was immediately able to connect to my Dell Dimension desktop running XP SP3, but after I had to rebuild the latter after a hacking attack (complete format & XP reinstall), it couldn't see the Nexus anymore - it just reports that a connected device is malfunctioning.
* I know that the Nexus is OK because it is instantly recognized by a Win7 laptop.
* I know that the USB ports on my PC are OK because they work with other external drives.
* So far, I have installed Windows Media Player 11 as I have read that is supports (installs?) Media Transfer Protocol, which the Nexus apparently needs, but this doesn't work either. I have read the driver downloads section of the Dell site to see if I can update the USB drivers, but there doesn't seem to be anything there either.
* The annoying thing is that at some point I MUST have installed whetever it is on the PC that allowed it to talk to the Nexus, but I can't for the life of me think what is it.
Please can some kind soul out there help me? All suggestions gratefully received.
Dell XP needs to have Nexus 7 (usb) drivers installed for it to properly recognize the device and open/read the /SD card or internal storage - suggest that you start reading / looking at using something like the Nexus 7 Toolkit - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
- also, check under Settings / Developer's Option that USB Debugging is turned on / checked or enabled if you are planning to root, etc.
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply - I'll give it a go.
u need USB debugging turned off to transfer files. Wow. Sheesh if that's a word

The Nexus that wouldn't
Sorry, folks, nothing I seem to do allows me to transfer files from my stonehenge PC to my Nexus. I even installed the Nexus 7 toolkit (featured elsewhere on here) and attempted to install drivers from that, but I don't think that that's the correct route either, as I'm not really sure whether the toolkit is aimed at my simple requirements or if it's more of a hacking tool.
All XP continues to tells me is that a device connected to my computer is malfunctioning. The REALLY annoying thing us that it has worked in the past and just doesn't work now since the rebuild.
Does anyone out there have any more suggestions, please?
Thanks in advance.
I have a mac so can't test it out but would something like this work? I know it's an old driver. http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Or maybe just install the SDK from the same site?
Assumed that OP has tried using different USB ports on the Dell and used diferent micro-usb cable, including the original one provided by Nexus in trying to get the connection working again, and also clean the N7's micro-usb port for dust & dirt, it could be bad or corrupted drivers from other devices causing the read/access errors - find them & delete/freeze them, reboot & re-insert. Also, try rebooting the N7 with the connected cable while rebooting/restarting the Dell.
Otherwise, try and borrow someone else's PC clean running XP or Vista or Win 7 - it should recognize the device & begin loading new drivers for the N7. System was rebuild so it should be relatively clean and good as new.
I've ran a backup in recovery mode and am trying to get the backup onto my laptop, in order to restore it to another phone.
The problem I'm having is that the phone is set to connect as a camera when connected via the USB cable, so iPhoto opens when I connect the phone. I actually need a file system browser to open, however the screen on the phone is cracked and it's no longer possible to navigate menu items using the screen, and so I can't change how the phone connects when plugged in via USB.
suggestions?
Cheers

This isn't going to help much (sorry )
but when I was trying to open the file explorer on my PC it wouldn't do it unless Debugging was turned off. And when it was turned on only the camera photo sharing option would work. So for me to get on my phones storage via PC, I had to turn debugging off. Idk if you have it on, but if that is the problem... hate to say it, but you're kinda ****ed. Hope someone will give u a useful answer :/
at least this comment will be a bump
I could be completely wrong though...
Hey y'all!
So far I'm loving this device but I have recently learned something that is quite irksome. I have done some quick Google-fu and haven't found a solution to this problem so hopefully you guys can help me out!
When I connect my 6P to my desktop, it installs the drivers, but it won't show up on my computer. I can't access any of the data. It charges but no actual transfer. I have changed the setting to MTP, tried installing new drivers, Android Debugging toggled (adb push works oddly enough), installing Google drivers, but nothing seems to work!
Also to note: My brother's Nexus 6 won't connect, and neither will my other brother's OnePlus One. It makes me think it has something to do with standard Android devices? I'm not sure.
I'm on Windows 8.1 FYI. Lemme know if you guys need anymore information!
Thanks in advance!
Try another PC, may be your PC has some issues.

Sounds computer related. I would uninstall all your Google, android, and whatever looks obvious drivers them restart your computer. Then reinstall Twrp drivers. Best of luck

It may be PC related but on marshmallow (6p at least) it asks you if you want to use it as file transfer device ,transferring pictures ,charging and all that jazz. Maybe you didn't see that screen on the phone?

Pull down the notification bar, and click on the notification which says something like, "38%, charging" or somesuch.. that will allow you to the change the USB mode to allow file transfers.
The default option is to charge, make sure you change it to MTP. This is a thorn in my side as I want the default option to be file transfer!
Can not connect nexus 6p to computer
I have turned on de bugging and set by usb connectuon to MTP from the default charge selection but I still can not get my computer to see the phone storage. When I plug into my computer it will install the drives even make the tone that its connected but I can not see the device under my explore? HELPPPPPP
I had to change it to PTP then back to MTP and disconnect and reconnect it to get MTP to work at all, just FYI.
I had to use my laptop just to be able to access files on the phone. For some reason my main desktop does not want to recognize the 6p, even after troubleshooting drivers etc.
You might want to check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/usb-storage-windows-t3244905/page2#post63750876, discussion has already been progressing.
Great Advice. Pulling down the notification bar. Mega cool

This post helped me figure out what I needed to do. Many thanks:highfive:
I had this problem and just needed to quickly transfer a couple of movie files to my laptop. Without getting too deep into what is obviously some sort of Marshmallow compatibility thing, here's what worked for me...
Switched to PTP and another set of drivers installed after which "Internal Storage" was recognized and I was able to access all contents of both "DCIM" and "Pictures" folders.
Then, using Explorer I simply moved the files I wanted to transfer to the "Pictures" folder and proceeded with my original intent. Problem Solved

The situation here I think is common, but I have not found any other content that could help me.
In short, the phone's display is broken, you can't see anything. But the touch works, as does the whole phone.
I would like to know if there is a way to control the phone from my PC. So that I can backup everything and buy a new phone.
Considering that I have available:
- adb and USB debugging: but not enabled on my PC. Basically I see the code of the connected phone but next to it it says "unauthorized".
- The phone has an initial unlocking PIN which I can't get past because I can't remember the position of the keys.
- I have Cerberus installed, which allows me to run shell commands, but only if I can unlock the display.
How can I solve this?
Thank you very much
Phone info:
- Model: Xiaomi K20 / Mi9T
- OS: Lineage OS 17.1
Get an image of the keypad positions and make a template. You'll need to do that for every page or popup you need to access.
Or...
Replace the display.
In the future backup critic data regularly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. Otherwise it's only a matter of time until something like this happens.
Install vlc player. Then put android to PC on you computer and click run both bat will display the screen on the computer. You can control the phone with the mouse on the computer and it will also play sound
Ok guys, I did solve my problem in the following:
Using this branch of Scrcpy I turned my PC into a OTG kb. So with the computer I inserted the PIN of the lock screen
Once unlocked the screen, i random clicked on the screen to authorize the PC with adb. It was easy since the popup will last over everything.
With the PC authorized, using scrcpy I was able to cast the screen of the phone on the PC and control the phone either
This way a backup was possible!
Thank you for your help
