Strange padlock icon in HTC 10 status bar? - Verizon HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I have a Verizon HTC 10.
Yesterday, on an out-of-town work assignment, I connected to a Wi-Fi network there.
While on that network, I downloaded an app that I needed for that work assignment.
I was using a bluetooth keyboard with an Android tablet in the vicinity of the phone, didn't try to connect to the phone but did connect to the tablet.
I mention those things first because they were the only out-of-the ordinary things I did with the phone yesterday.
The reason I'm posting this call-out for help is that I noticed before I headed home yesterday that a padlock icon had appeared next to my Wi-Fi indicator in the phone's status bar.
My phone appears to be working just fine. But this padlock icon is driving me crazy because I don't know what it is, and I guess I'm OCD because I want to know what caused it and what I can do to get rid of it.
Can anyone provide any input here?

I'm pretty sure that padlock icon appeared when you connected to the new wifi/bluetooth connection and your phone asked you if you wanted to add the connecting device to your list of trusted devices. That would make your phone unlock whenever it was connected to that device.
You can see a list of trusted devices in settings/security/smart lock. Also next time you see the lock icon just swipe down on your notification bar and see what it is.

That's just it, I'm showing no trusted devices, and there's no indication in the notification bar of what this lock icon is. I did enough research to try those things, but am getting nada.

They don't appear in your trusted list because you didn't add them. They were suggested to you as trusted devices only when you first connected to them, but without accepting you won't see them in the trusted list.

I think it's VPN

Call Forwarding Icon in Task Bar...ARGHHHH

how do i get rid of it, everytime i restart the phone, it comes back...its pissing me offfff LMAOOO HAHA....please anyone...help meeee
Did you ever figure this out?
I'm having this problem too since the latest rom upgrade. Seen a few others with the same problem after upgrading as well. I'm using ATT US X1a rom1.03.948.8.
I've tried a hard reset, swapping the sim out (as mentioned in another thread), using forwarding cancel codes (##62#), and obviously the normal call forwarding settings on the phone. It clears up the problem for a few soft resets, then it comes right back again.
call forwarding..
you seem to have call forwarding turned on.
Phone - Menu - Settings - services - call forwarding - get settings
there you will have all these type of settings like forward to number with no answer and also forward all calls.. just uncheck them all i guess.
Thanks
daniel
In NAM on AT&T, call forwarding is always turned on for something. Normally, it's turned on only for no answer and unreachable.
The phone should not show the call forwarding icon when these are the only services activated.
I don't understand how or why it happens, but I will occasionally get the call forward icon showing when I have nothing special turned on.
It will eventually go away, usually after I've had to power the device for some reason. Note, however, that it will not necessarily go away if I power the device to the specific purpose of removing the call forwarding icon.
I've never figured out what makes it show or why it goes away.
Lucky for me, I'm not too troubled by it.
Hmm
I think this problem is carrier related, (carriers have control over your call forwarding) because I have had this problem on many different phones from different manufacturers over the years. Not on my Xperia yet though.
Thanks for the replies. As stated in the earlier post, I have already tried unchecking, rechecking etc. As soon as it connects to the network it goes away. It seems to be an issue with the newest rom though as the previous rom does not have this issue at all (for me at least).
Call forwarding is definitely on the carrier side, but as soon as the phone connects to the network to pull call forward settings, it will always change the icon to the correct status (ie icon is there when forward all calls is on and not when it's not), which tells me that it's probably an issue with the rom, not the carrier. You're right about the settings George, but unfortunately I do use call forwarding from time to time and need to know when its truly on or off .
I've tried tweaking the cf values in the registry as well at hklm\software\htc\phone without any luck.
The call forwarding icon is also showing on my X1 I am on Orange UK.
I guess it can't be fixed.
Guys in US with AT&T.
I've got this issue that might be stupid but I suffer from it really bad. Everytime I get a new voice message, a text comes in with weired notes (which I know is for the phone to notify me) but I have to delete the sucker everytime. Or everytime I am in the voice box, it sends me another txt for deletion/
How can I get rid of this?
Do you guys have a good visual voice message system installed?
AT&T doesn't support any other phones except what they sell. AHhh
Thank you all.
Oddly enough my problem went away. I still think it's a ROM issue. I was playing with some other roms and eventually ended up flashing back to NAM R2AA008 (1.03.948.8). Restored my old config with full SPB backup and I haven't had the problem since.
I'm guessing that "if" it was a settings issue, the backup would've just recreated the issue. Plus hard resets didn't make the problem go away either. I even tried changing to a new sim as some people tried in other posts. But completely reflashing the rom seems to have done the trick for me at least.
The only difference that I can see is that I did the first update through SEUS. All the other flashes were done the old fashioned way. Not saying this would work for others, but it's been gone for weeks now for me.
Solution
Dial ##21# on the X1.
The "Call Forwarding" icon will disappear on the top bar of your X1. But, it won't affect your call fwd settings in the operator's mobile system.
P.S. I mean it won't change the call fwd settings defined by operator in the mobile system, e.g. no answer and the call will be directed to voice mail system.
##21# is the function code to cancel call fwd setup by your phone. If you did setup some call fwd scenarios on your phone, the call fwd icon will be displayed as an indicator for call forward is active.
For the purpose of just get rid of the icon right after power on or soft reset the phone, I think it is a simple solution.

I think most of the people having this problem on the thread are referring to a strange bug that seems to be affecting a small percentage of users. I've seen the same problem posted on a few other sites/threads as well. It doesn't really have to do with call forwarding being on at all, it's just that the icon is there. Using the forward codes or forcing an update will make it go away temporarily, but for me it kept eventually coming back no matter what I did. When my phone had the problem, I tried 21, 69, 67, 61. None of them made the issue go away permanently.
My X1 has this kind of problem as well. It is the problem from X1 itself, maybe the X1 can not log into the 2G or 3G network very well.

Whoa. LOL... I haven't seen this since the old Synergy Motorola days when we were all fascinated with foreign firmware.
I do not have this issue with the generic NAM or generic UK ROM in their latest iterations.
I guess the first thing anybody would normally suggest is to make sure you're on one of these ROM.

This is a carrier related issues. Some carrier has 2G and 3G network that if the area is not covered by 3G network, Internal using forward to their own 2G network in order to let the phone work. It happen not just on the X1, It happen on all other WM base phone I have before. However, if your carrier has only a single network whether it is 2G or 3G. This forward logo will go away. Good example. the 3 mobile Network in Hong Kong has 2G and 3G separate and on my X1, which use the 3 mobile has the forward logo all the time but on my Touch HD, I use the Smartone network which have a combine 2G and 3G network and you never see the forward logo.
Just so you know, same problem here.
The solution? I heop someone makes a pretty version for the "Call forwarding" icon haha.
With the help of Bxsteez I have fixed this issue with the R2 rom always doing this...

Since the last firmware update, I have the same icon showing up.
But there is a cure at least for US AT&T.........
Like it has been said before go to phone setting
Select Call Forwarding and hit the get setting button...
Once it retrieves the setting from AT&T net, the icon goes Bye-Bye!!
I have to do this every hard-reset or complete power down...
This what works for me...

Notification icons turn from green to grey? READ THIS

Taken from the official Google Blog:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/some-cool-android-tips-and-tricks.html
Notification bar icons (Wi-Fi, network coverage bars, etc.): Turn green when you have an uninhibited connection to Google, white when you don't. Hint: if you're in a hotel or airport using Wi-Fi, the bars won't turn green until you launch the browser and get past the captive portal.
Click to collapse
But why Google do that?
Why it is waiting the browser to launch?
Or is it just the tips to make it turn to green faster?
hospitals, and airports usually have you agree to some terms before you can full access the net with their connection. That's why. I was on a bus last weekend which blocked many websites, including Googles. So I had an internet connection but YouTube, and other websites were block, and my phone couldn't access the Google servers.
That is a neat feature. Often times my school wifi will do this until I login with my password and username
I was driving and had full bars w/ 3G but could not get any data... no email refresh, no maps update, no web... I turned on and off airplane mode to reset the connection and then the bars turned full w/ 3G but Green and emails and data started flowing...
I think when it is greyed out you have no data connection but there is a connection available... you just arent on it...

That is not correct.
When you have any bars, white or green, you have a data connection. When you have green bars, you have a data connection that's working with Google's sync servers.
I can get websites with white bars, but email and google voice don't sync unless they're green.
This is the only phone I have that behaves like this...I do not like it.

Do you make your calls through Google Voice? I wonder if you have to have a data connection to do that. I don't think it works that way, but might be the issue.
Okay guys, I had an opportunity to test the data-works-with-white-bars situation I mentioned earlier today.
I've uploaded an unedited youtube video showing the phone has white bars and I am able to browse to a website still.
Data definitely works for non-Google-SYNCed services on my phone, even Google sites.
My S seems to display grey/white indicators at times and will not return green unless I reboot. Does anyone else have this issue?
It seems to happen on mine once or twice a day.
Thanks!

It might have happened to me once. I think I rebooted like you did, but in hindsight, I think just going to Settings, Wireless, and turning on/off airplane mode would be just as effective and a little quicker.
This is a very annoying new "feature" of Android and the Nexus S.
This is an awesome feature. Showing that you are "connected" to Wifi or a Cell network is of little value unless you know that the connection is able to get to the internet. Saves you if the internet connection goes down or if the connection needs a login to work, etc.

The phone is able to get to the internet with grey bars. Go back a couple of posts and you'll see a link to a video I made showing that grey bars didn't keep me from opening a web page in the browser. The green/gray doesn't tell you that your connection is down, it tells you that you're not logged in with Google services.
I like the green/white in terms of it telling you your status, what I meant was that the logging out of google services is annoying. I've not seen this kind of behavior (having to wait for green bars or reboot the phone to get to Google) on any of my four prior Android phones.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the tzone/web2go blocking going on.

Agreed, for the last two years my G1 would show a connection and I would try and use a wifi signal to no avail. In the end I knew it was because I needed to agree to some terms but couldn't with my phone's browser or all the things I wanted to use were blocked.
It is also good for troubleshooting. Like if there is something wrong with it connecting to GTalk.
It's funny that it has become such a big item of discussion when it should be there to make life better for us.
I think the discussion is because a lot of people who on prior devices never had issues connecting to GTalk or the Market, or Gmail, or [insert Google app here] all of a sudden are finding that they can't get to them until the bars turn green.
I've certainly never noticed issues on my four prior Androids with this. Power up the screen, open a Google service and it's live.
With the Nexus S (or Gingerbread), power up the screen and wait some random amount of time before the bars turn green. No Google services until the bars turn green.
There's also a lot of confusion over what the green means. Many, many posts out there with people saying that they can't get any data services from any source (ie., browse the web) when the bars are grey. My own test (demonstrated in a video on an early post in this thread) shows that I am able to surf the web to a site with grey bars. At least on my phone, grey does not mean connected but no data...it means connected to working data, but not logged in with Google.

Well that still makes sense, because say your network data connection went down in your area for whatever reason. Your icons would turn white cause obviously you can't ping the Google servers, but at the same time its just a larger issue of totally no data in that particular instance.
But white icons does mean no contact to Google servers only, but regular data should still work.

I would assume it's intentional. On a Phone it shows Carrier name because thats is the primary connection method. On the N7, we only have Wi-Fi so SSID makes sense.

Smart Unlock - Trusted Wifi?

So is there an option to add a trusted wifi network for smart unlock?
I know I can add my house location, but I don't want to have gps turned on all the time and even so, it's not the most accurate in this regard. I'd rather just have my phone smart unlock when i'm connected to my home wifi.
I thought I saw it somewhere in the settings at one point but I can't find it now... thanks for the help!

Location mode>battery saving should do it.
There is no smartunlock via trusted wifi source, not yet at least. Its something I see a lot of people complaining about (myself included). The unlock by location is extremely unreliable, even when you set a ton of location points around your hour or work.
Having an option to purely remove lock based on which wifi network you're connected to would be amazing.
Once xposed hits you can do this with gravity box. Ravio said his first year version should be out this week. /crossesfingers
Only got my Nexus 6P (H1512) a couple days ago, I did hear that 6.0.1 corrected the smart lock bug for some people, however smart lock is still very unstable for me (fails at work, and at home, about once each per day). Smart unlock by wi-fi connection would be very welcome.

it's available now. you need to install xposed. once xposed set up, there's a couple modules that will do this for you. my fav at the moment is Gravity Box for Marshmallow.

They problem is the tile doesn't show up in Bluetooth devices, so I'm not sure how to make it work with anything besides it's own app.

No data when home

I'm on Metro PCS with no problems until recently. Basically, my phone will not access the internet at home unless I use wifi. The 4G icon appears to be working but the page wont load. If I send a text I receive a message stating the text didnt go through but the person still receives the message.
Also, when I place a call at home it will not connect. The phone shows dialing but nothing happens. I've double checked the APN and did a factory reset but the problem is still there. All of these problems happened overnight.
However, once I get about a mile away from my home there are no issues. Its like the band/channel used in my area isnt being accessed.
Is there a way to reset the radio or make sure all available bands are used? Or is this an issue on Metro's side? I called them and they, supposedly did a full reset but that didnt work either.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
