Huh? It already allows you to plug in a 5 pin USB cable into the power side (5 pin). What are you trying to do?

I would guess power in and audio out at the same time
I am using my phone in my car and don't want the power cable and music cable hanging down in front of my dash. What I want to do is run a USB cable out of my phone, drill a small hole and have the HTC TyTN Y Cable and everything else hidden.
Ooops when I said drill a small hole I am drilling it in my dash. I am just trying to extend the HTC TyTN Y Cable and unfortunately that is a different style connect on the end so there are no cables out there with a female end. So I figured I would splice it.
So can this be done?
If you want to split audio/power, you CAN NOT USE an USB cable.
See the difference between AUDIO jack (hearphones) & USB Jack.
also, the jack of the earphones is good, but it hasn't connected the power cables to the pins. i hope if you cut the cable, you will find only audio/mic cables.
so, or you buy a TyTn Y Cable and cut/extend it; or you have a male connector like that on earphones, and do with it all that you want.
::::::::::::::::::::.
OOps... i've understood now the very question.... :emb :emb
an user has dismantled it... HERE
What I want to do is leave the headphone and power intact and cut the male end off(the end that plugs into the phone) then take a regular USB 5pin cord and splice it onto that. Does that make more sense.

If you just want to extend it, buy the 3 way adapter from Brando and mod that one. What we're trying to tell you is that there are 11 wires in that harness, so if you want to extend the cord, all you'll need to do it splice a new set of extension wires in (multiple USB cables?). If you can solder, that's no big deal. I have mine mounted in a Brodit powered cradle with audio going into my car stereo, and the y cable is tucked behind the cradle and the wires hidden into my dash.
How many wires are in the Brando? Is it pretty easy to splice? Sorry if I am asking a stupid question.

I haven't taken mine apart, but I assume it still has 11 wires (one for each pin). The reason I was suggesting this is because if you want to have a 3.5mm audio out, you either have to buy an HTC-specific USB to 3.5mm audio adapter for $12-$15, or you can buy the Brando unit which includes everything for ~$20 (and if you screw it up, you're only out the $20).
Splicing wires isn't difficult, but if you're not handy with a soldering iron it might be. These a pretty small wires (30 gauge?). Practice on an old USB cable first.
I already have the 3.5mm headphone jack and the power connected. My only problem is the end that plugs into the phone. Instead of making a standard mini USB HTC changed it so it is a different shape. I guess I figured I could just cut off that end and it would be same as any USB cable. I didn't want to go into the jack itself where the headphone and power is.

They changed the jack because it won't work in a USB plug - it has 11 pins (5 for USB power/sync and 6 for audio). You can extend it either way, but it takes 11 wires to extend it. I have a similar setup in my car, so I understand where you're coming from, but aside from extending the cable I've not seen a better solution...
What a pain. What really stinks is I only need to go about 8 inches.
I just bought the HTC 3-in-1 adaptor from ShopBrando HK. I am using it in the car with the Brodit holder to have both charger and 3.5 mm for the car stereo aux input. I am modifying the holder (removing the charger pin for the adaptor 11 pin).
The problem is that the adaptor's wire is too short. I want to hide the adaptor somewhere in the car and a longer wire is needed.
I am thinkng about
a) Use and extension wire ( if there is any) Is there an extension cable (male to female -11 pin usb) ???
b) Cut and extend the lenght of the wire.
What is the wire used?? If I cut the wire to extent it, what kind of wire should i ask for?
Thank you
This is exactly the same problem I am facing. Can't find a ExtUSB Male to Female extension. But I would be up for trying to extend the cable if I could buy some. Hopefully someone will answer.

Just clip off 1/2 inch and take the sample with you to the store to show the sales people. At the same time, you should get the proper connecters to splice the wires together.
Does anyone really need to extend all 11 pins for both audio and power, or just power, or just audio?

mbarabas, szerintem a csomagnak nem része a tv kábel, de ne legyen igazam, mert én meg akarom venni a pro-t
mbarabas, according to me for the packet not his part the TV cable, but not be true, because I want to buy it the pro
I'm sure I saw somewhere that it doesn't come in the box. I've just oredered one from Expansys.
Today is the last day of the Modaco offer if you type "http://mickey.modaco.com/expansys/getcode.php?email=" into your browser adding your email address after the "=" it will send you a £10 voucher. You need to order something else to push the price of the cable over £20 so I got a 1GB MicroSD.
So all in that's a the TV out cable and 1GB MicroSD card delivered for £14.19
HTC own website states that its optional, so its highly unlikely you'll get one in the box
My cable has arrived. I'll post the pinout when I get a chance to beep it out.
pin out
These are for the pins as viewed in the plug.
1 video out
5 video ground
2 audio right
6 audio left
11 audio ground
jwitham - thanks, updated first post!
Now does anyone know where you can buy the 11pin ExtUSB plugs from? I only seem to be able to find them on audio adaptors which, I guess, only have 3 wires connected.
I was watching unboxing video, there is not a TV cable in the box
not really what the post is after but might be useful for some people, here is the link to buy the full cable from expansys:

make one?
The HTC TV out cable cost too much! ($50)
Im gonna try my luck and make one.
Ebay sells 3in1 HTC ExtUSB adapters for about AU$15 shipped (it does say 5+6pins)
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=370079511111
and Dealextreme have Yellow+Red+White TV-out cable for a samsung phone for $5 shipped.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5122
Should be able to use the diagram in post#7 and get it to work.
anyone see a problem with this approach?
i heard that raphael detects video-out cable presense, so there probably should be some king of resistor or somthing like that... we need to check that.

yeh, to check resistance between video out and video ground, as well as
between audio out and audio ground, for example, by some ohm-meter

probably a terminator resistor of 50 ohms .. a piece of 50 ohm antenna wire will do fine ..
these cost 25 cents or less
as far as the mini usb .. its probably the same as this one motorola has..
im not sure if motorola sells these or if there are any to buy separatly.
just an idea : maybe one can convert this yellow rca videoplug (which comes standard with any videocard with tv-out) to have a miniusb plug on the other side.

No problem what to convert, the question is "how"
An ExtUSB-3.5mm jack headphone adapter ($5) has the necessary connector.
I just need someone to check the original cable of intercontact resistence

I dont think it is terminated inside the connector. The detection will be due to the internal termination of the device you connect to eg tv or projetor.

I think you are right a tv has an composite input witch has a 75ohm resitance.
but your headset uses the same connection for his mic... for me a bummer but for you guys maybe the solution....
take a look at this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31649&d=1164664052
it's a pinout of the headset...
i just maked one for myself (actual a home made cradle) but it just doesn't reconize the cable, audio and charging works like a charm
Build your own TV Out Cable
OK, I tried to put the pin-out together. I don't have the cable, but I played around with the Multifunction Audio Cable YC A200 which I opened up for that purpose. Only when pins 3 and 5 are connected and not 4, the TP recognizes a video cable and askes for the video norm. When using these pins as ground, there is a humming noise and the video flickers. By connecting these pins with pin A, this problem is solved. I put the info on a figure... could someone with a cable and a multimeter validate it?
I made then a custom cable to work with the Multifunction cable. For this, a 4-pin 3.5 mm plug was worked on with a Dremmel (see figure). The plug needs then to be inserted into the receptacle so that the notch is at the upper left. Just turn the plug till it is no longer identified as headset but as video cable. The extra ground connection I got from a regular mini USB cable. Tested and works without problem...
switch should be connected to mic ground probably.. can you try if this works ?
connect 3 and 5 for video switch
connect audio plug [ ]=== ground - audio right - audio left
4 - 2 - 6
connect video (o) outer 5 inner 1
I have previously made up very short charging leads to use with earlier PDAs and my Arkon car mount. Having just got the Touch HD I was dismayed to see the "non-standard" USB connector. I cannot find a supplier of plugs to fit these anywhere. There are plenty of cheap car chargers around claiming to fit Touch HD, but I wonder if they do? Do they expect me to use the cable that came with the HD? I don't want to hack that one around. So any ideas? Can I buy a cheap sync cable and modify that? Can I get the plugs I need?
I thought the same thing but it turns out the normal usb plugs fit the HD.
You can just use a normal mini-usb male connector, it fits the same way as in a normal female usb-connector, at least for charging and mounting the phone as harddisk on a pc it works. i think even acticesync should work, 'cause its a normal usb-connection it uses.
greetings
Seth
Well, even activsync will work, at least it work on my HD, you can even flash your HD trough normal USB cable. Check - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BlackstoneFAQ.

Wonderful! Many thanks everyone. I already have a car and mains charger with normal mini-usb connectors. Problem solved
I wonder why they made the connector like that?

I suspect they were considering some proprietary nonsense at some point
If anyone is keen , or if you are like me and have a spare headset from another phone you can use the following diagram and cable colour code to make your own video out cable.
I have used the Raphael cable for this excercise as I like my old Hermes one better.
You will need:
One Red White and Yellow RCA Cable
Step One. Remove pin four from the extUSB plug. *note this can be tricky but is necessary to allow the device to recognise the cable as a TV out cable as opposed to a Headset cable. I used a needle to bend into the middle of the plug and then used a tiny micro screwdriver to bend backwards and forwards until it broke. Be careful not to damage any of the other contacts. Please see post 20 for an easier option that doesnot involve removing pin 4
Step Two. Cut cable as close to mic piece as possible and remove outside cover.
Step Three. Solder the following pairs of cables together using the following codes:
Video positive (Yellow RCA end) --> White pvc coated cable (extUSB end).
Video sheild (Yellow RCA end), --> blue copper cable (extUSB end).
Audio Left (White or Black RCA end) --> green copper cable (extUSB end).
Audio Right (Red RCA end) --> red copper cable (extUSB end).
Audio Sheild ( both Red and White or Black RCA end --> copper cable (extUSB end), * note the copper cable is the sheild wire that surounds all the coloured wires.
The last two colored copper wires
Step Four. wrap electrical tape around the solderd wires so that they do not touch any of the other contacts.
Step Five. Plug in and play.

I think the device must have the TV out function cooked into the Rom or maybe there is a registry hack?

Let me know how that works cause i was going to do the same.
i found a similar post on ppcgeeks a while back. Took me about 30 min to remove the 4th pin...i used a safety pin- someone at ppcgeeks offered that advice. Works like charm. But f you have no patience, buy it on ebay.

Please note that the mini USB must have contacts on the inside of both the bottom and top. the average mini USB sync cable does not have the necessary contacts.
this is such an awsome mod, im going to try this out. lol
i removed the pin 4 as stated in the picture but the cable is not recognized as a TV Out cable and no longer is recognized as a headser, i made sure i didnt damage any other pins besides the number 4.
another thing is that i only want video i dont care about audio does the TP sense that is conected or can i just solder the two wires required to get video?
excelente post BTW
EDIT:
Does the TV out only outputs certain content or can any content can be shown on the TV
i have a 7" monitor in my car and i wanted to use this monitor to display GARMIN as its bigger screen.
im gonna answer myself
any content can be seen on the TV.
yes it does have to be conected to the TV and the TV has to be ON in order to detect the signal.
also make sure the pin is completlly removed all the way to the bottom.
IT WORKS !!!!!!
thanks one again, excellent post.

sorry, but I am curious on this unanswered question...
Works great! Finally some use for the old, spare headphones and a/v cables I had laying around.
i imagine it would work on all htc devices that support tv out, but that is just a wild guess.
It is work on HTC Touch Cruise (Polaris)???

This will work with any mini USB plug that has internal contacts on both the bottom and the top (see Step One.JPG in first post). The colour of the wires may vary but I would imagine that there would be a standard colour code for all earplug cables made by HTC, however these may vary between companies.
Hope this helps.
thanks dude. Could it be done with an ordinary mini usb cable?
I tryed this and it did not work for me so I went to Amozon.com and got the Ipod RCA jack didnt cost much at all. Clean look and dont wast the nice HTC ear plugs but I guess you guys are happy with it but now I need new ear plugs...
I didn't use HTC plugs at all, bought Creative ones + 1 pound adaptor and they are way better than stocks, so yes I'm happy about that mode I've done like.. 10 mins ago?
Had some problems with all operation couse it was quite difficult to find right cables on photo that author attached (of course I really appreciate audible_paradigm work, all that mess was about different colors of my cables).
Anyway, it works veeery good and I'm one step closer to get this phone liked
Ps. You don't have to remove 4 pin in usb cable guys, just install one of the .cabs attached in THIS topic - much easier x]
Big thanks!
