Root SM-G930U with TinySU - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

My new thread after a loooooong time Finally I won my laziness to write something.
What is TinySU?
TinySU is a tiny alternative for @Chainfire's SuperSU or @phhusson's SuperUser or @topjohnwu's MagiskSU.
Why TinySU?
My S7 is a Sprint SM-G930P flashed to Nougat G930U firmware. I found the root guide using @JUSMEJOSE' s Engineering kernel and @jrkruse's SuperSU v2.82 install script. So far so good.
However after a short time using it I see lots of lags. Apps were constantly killed after switching. Starting new apps takes a while. I tried to unroot yet keep the engineering kernel (i.e. removal of SuperSU disk image, daemon launching script...) and the lags are gone. So I decided to write my own root app with tininess in mind
TinySU is
tiny
no library dependent
fast and smooth
not compatible with SELinux
Enough. How to use it for my G930U?
(Many links are shamelessly copied from @Araltd's root tutorial)
Download and install Samsung USB drivers.
Use @princecomsy 's Odin to flash @JUSMEJOSE' s Engineering kernel.
Enable USB debugging, if not yet done.
Download and extract my SM-G930U repo on GitHub.
Use my TinySU install script, located at the extracted directory/Install-TinySU/tinysu-root.bat

Nice job. The only problem I see is Flashfire will not work

Will this trip Knox?

No, just like the other methods, no Knox trip.

Knox will not be tripped since G930U is an offical firmware and doesnt install a custom recovery, you can not use SafetyNet applications though and Samsung Pay won't work.

So what won't work using TinySU that would work using SuperSU?
(Also great job and thank you!)

Do think it's only G930U can support this root ? Great work :good:

This root should work on other firmwares as well. However, I don't have other devices so couldn't test.
Try with your own risk

knox won't be tripped?

Use @princecomsy 's Odin to flash @JUSMEJOSE' s Engineering kernel.
flash this kernel may trip knox.

I had an issue with the system being only readable, rather than writeable are there any fixes?

must use engineering boot?

You can try, but depending on the way you launch the su daemon, you will need to update your script.
Gimme the link that you used to install super su on your 935U, I may have a look...

If that's the case you can try TinySU, it should work.
Don't forget to push the fingerprint fix back... My script is for G930U so the fingerprint sensor may be different

You can do that yourself if you're rooted. Use the apps found on the playstore called System App Remover. The advantages of this app is that it comments on what is safe to remove and what isn't. The free version did such a good job on my Nexus devices that I bought the pro version just to support the developer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp
It can remove user apps also but that is less to your needs.
The best part is that it automatically backups what it deletes into a trash directory. This means if you accidentally remove something you shouldn't you can use the app to reinstall it. I used this feature on more than one occasion when an app would no long work (e.g. Gmail need a cloud print module).

That is good to know. Yes, I am rooted and have TWRP recovery.
I want to know what apps are safe to remove, and what aren't. With a tool that can tell me, that would be perfect. I don't have a samsung phone, so I have no use for sidesync, for instance.

Systemless SuperSU for stock roms

Hello all,
as you may know installing systemless SuperSU for Z2 stock roms was not possible until now due to the ELF format of the boot image. As a workaround one was required to install SuperSU in system mode, but support for this installation type seems to fade away...
In order to have convenient solution to enable systemless installation for elf boot image files, @adriandC created a tool called boot_bridge that works around the limitations caused by the ELF format. Up to now, only Xperia SP and similar device have been supported.
But, due to the recent efforts to support ELF images in libbootimg (backend library used by MultiRom) and which are found in Z2 and similar devices, the boot_bridge tool now supports the Z2 as well (boot_bridge also uses the libbootimg library). This is a result of a collaborative effort of AdrainDC and me wherby the main portion of the work on the boot_bridge was done by AdrainDC (I focussed on the Z2 ELF support, where AdrainDC fixed may changes such that the Xperia SP support is no broken )
You can find the tools here:
boot_bridge
Regards,
Diewi
P.S: I am posting this here to raise awareness of this useful tool, since this update may be easily missed in the cross-device dev section).
very interesting and saw this in Cross Dev section . will try and let u know

To be safe, uninstall supersu before. Either via a the uninstaller or by flashing stock.
Does this mean that we can now use Magisk, for example?

I have this exactly same doubt. I was using Magisk on my Z2 with @Gustavo RD78 amazing Advanced Stock Kernel, but after Magisk 6.0 i always got a bootloop when i try to use then
Hmmm I have Sony Xperia Z2 with Elite Kernel v3, Xposed, SuperSU, and Magisk V8 installed and everything is working fine for me
Custom kernels are not using the ELF format. The boot_bridge is for the stock kernel, not custom kernels compiled from stock sources.

IF you need stock for that then: probably yes. But I am not into this android pay stuff (which has even more scurity mechanisms AFAIK to even detect systemless root), so at least I can't give you an answer to this. Anyone?

most devs work only on their own free time and sometimes they do not have the device or they have had it but got rid of it. it may take a year or two before a custom rom will release as it is typical for phones under the budget category. (under $200) devices that are expensive get more developement due to alot of people focusing only on the greatest and latest.

There are two versions, one is to be flashed in TWRP as a normal zip and you must type YES in twrp wipe settings to format data, reboot recovery and then wipe all except external sd and otg! Proceed to flash the Rom and then reboot. First boot may take a LONG time so be patient!! Let me know what works and what doesn't. Consider this to be in TESTING phase so don't use it as a daily driver until you are sure it works for you! The other for Odin, I would use the latest version!

Yeah same here, TWRP works a treat but the stock camera app wont take a picture so not even as far as a green pic lol
Tried other camera apps also like Camera FV-5 but same issue..
So the DRM fix kernal is exclusive for either G8141 or G8142
but the DRM patch fixes both G8141 & G8142 phones?
Can someone confirm please

The DRM fix download link from above was the problem, If you get the latest XperiFIX tool you can get your camera working on the latest firmware build as I just did.
Although to date XperiFIX does not work for me as a standalone tool the latest build in the settings tab has a list of supported devices with links to the TWRP images, DRM XperiFIX files etc.
Just copy & paste your phones column to notepad & seperate the links, your looking for the XperiFIX.zip link
Being that the DRM XperiFIX kernel belongs to STORM it's better to just buy the latest tool, rather than me share his work & cut his profits.
Thanks Blackghosthm for this useful post, it helped me figure out the problem I've had since unlocking my bootloader

I flashed the G8141 file for my single sim phone

Sorted the issue...

A little confused by the variety of responses. So, it's just Magisk 16.4 that isn't compatible with 8142? Just trying to sort out which circumstances work. I have the 8142 and am looking for a simple way to patch the DRM issues without going too far from stock.

OK, so I'm on the dual SIM G8142 and I'm trying to sort out my DRM patch and wanting to keep things stock. I tried JanJan's fix and didn't work for me and the Turbo ROM has a few too many tweaks for me. I'm on the latest 145 with only TWRP installed, no root or other customizations.
Will this be problematic with the dual SIM version?

Sir I am more concern what will happened in next update?
shoey63 is no longer gonna patch kernels via xperfix in support of //storm
so the maple kernel you have given is actually made by him for his modded rom ....

rom advice needed.

newbie question this so forgive me being so niave.
i have a samsung galaxy note 4...its my old phone i have as a spare.
at one stage i had lineage os on it and it was fantastic, slick, fast, clean with superb battery life....but the lineage os for the note 4 was unofficial and was pre-rooted...which meant some apps dont work... snapchat an obvious one.
so... what are my options on roms that are stock android like...which wont be rooted and be stable ?
thanks in advance for any replies.

Air rom unfortunately you can't use some apps due to prerooted rom.
The first rom I used it but if you use any note 7 port the old ui seems outdated. I wish I could unroot someway the Air Rom which I use for daily driver but unfortunately I can't use an app that I need because it's prerooted.

Why dont U ask dev to Unroot it 4 u???? Give it a try. And as always U can unroot it by installing non rooted kernel after installing rom or inject non rooted kernel into Rom.zip. But, ask Dev, rom is great.
And, Note 7 Ports 4 me r better than s8 etc ports

When you are saying some apps are you talking about safetynet getting tripped? Why not just flash Spacelemon non-rooted and flash latest magisk with prop hide module to get it to work. I was able to pass safetynet with the latest version of AirRom at the time.

No worries for you being a newbie, but I just wanted to clarify that you can actually use restricted apps like Snapchat (created a burner account since I don't use it), Netflix, and Android Pay, etc.
Requirements:
- Lastest build from Bonuzzz (Mar.)
- Some basic knowledge on working Magisk
- Download Terminal app
- Possibly a third party file manager (ex. Solid Explorer, ES Files Explorer, etc.)
Steps:
- You need to download this and flash it in your recovery to remove pre-root from your device. https://mirrorbits.lineageos.org/su/addonsu-remove-15.1-arm-signed.zip
- Head over to the Magisk thread and download the latest version of Magisk (16.0). https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
- Flash Magisk in your recovery and and open the Magisk Manager and update it when prompted.
- Head over back to the Magisk thread and download the MagiskHide Props Config module. https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-magiskhide-props-config-simple-t3765199
- Open back up Magisk Manager click on the three dashes on the top left and click on the modules tab. Press the button that shows a plus sign and locate the module that you downloaded/saved on your device.
- It should then start flashing through the manager and prompt you to reboot.
- After reboot, download any terminal app (preferably Termux) and open it.
- Type in "Su" and grant it root access. Next, type "props" and it should open up onto an interface.
- Type in "1" to change your device fingerprint and type in "f" to pick a certified fingerprint.
- From here, you can choose whichever certified fingerprint your device wants to be recognized as (I used Samsung Note 5).
- After choosing your certified fingerprint, it will ask you to reboot.
- After reboot, head back into Magisk Manager and click on the SafetyNet Check (It might prompt you to download something). Eventually you should get the same test like in my picture.
- (Optional) Head back into recovery and wipe dalvik cache/cache.
Hopefully this helps out on your problem on apps not working or not letting you install them. Also, this can work for others too that don't use lineage but other Custom ROMs (AirRom, Nemesis, etc.). All you need to do is just install the latest SpaceLemon Non-rooted Kernel or manually unroot and continue with the steps on "Heading over to Magisk Threads". I do hope that this worked for others, and sorry if the instructions are either too long or really complicated on following.

No even with non rooted kernel and magisk hide props and safetynet passes correctly the app does not start due to root existance.I don't know what else to do.

For me the only solution was to flash the no root stock deodexed rom you wrote above earlier today. With air rom and doing every step to pass safetynet correctly the app recognises root whatever I do.
Just saying, but please don't create a thread like this on the Android Development page again.
