Android O battery drain at night - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone with high battery drain at night with phone idle?
Unplugged mine at 01:00am and this morni at 07:00am battery was at 88%.
I have Google Play Services 11.5.30
Thanks

Stock kernel?

Yes, like always.
Before upgrade had no problem at all: 2% overnight.

Running great for me how olds your battery and what kind of apps are you running?

unplugged at 19:00 or so , at 08:00 Am had 95%
Mine is about 14 months old , ElementalX kernel 5.0.3, rooted , no profile selected just yet

less than 2 years but, as I wrote: before upgrade had no problem at all: 2% overnight.
It all started with upgrade to Android O

My rule of thumb is whenever there is a big update (especially when it's a new Android OS) to do a factory reset. That way everything is clean and no hiccups from upgrading one Android OS over another.

yes of course... but these days I have no time for that, so I applied the OTA and just cleared the cache...
Let's see, it's only a problem overnight: if problem persists, will do a factory reset...

I had it and the culprit was the wifi settings to keep wifi on during sleep: Settings > Wifi > click on the gear > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep - I was using Always and now I use Only when plugged-in.

I slept for 6 hours and lost 1%, superxe rom, no custom kernel, most Google apps debloated. My phone is 1 1/2 year old. Great battery life on O :good:

Do you keep your N6p connected to wifi? Mine is always connected to wifi. I used "always on" since Android M and I felt a huge difference using "only when plugged in", but I just did it with Android N - I saw a post on AP, I think. I use stock / rooted / franco kernel with no CPU tweak.

I've had mine lose 15-20% in two hours sitting on my night stand. The stock Android battery screen says System is using a ton, with media.codec being the big culprit. I'm not sure what is causing that though.

I have just noticed that google play services is still subvrsion xxx-440 (4xx stands for android >=6 and <8) instead of 940 (9xx stand for android >=8), so this could be a problem?

Galaxy Note 2.3.5 high Android OS Battery Use

My galaxy note is constantly displaying Android OS use between 50-70%.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Flash a Custom Kernel based on 2.6.35.14 (2 are available). This solves the problem.
thanx for the suggestion.
But i'd rather keep the stock firmware, for now, as this is my first android..don't wanna risk a brick.
From other threads i've read, there's a newer firmware 2.3.6 available for the germany galaxy notes. Any idea if it fixes this bug...its really annoying..i've already done factory resets thinking it may fix it .
I bought my note in st Louis USA . It had european charger and strange language that I don't recognize . it came as KJ4 build . So I don't know from what european country my note came but I downloaded and flashed Hong Kong rom 2.3.6 and its pretty good with battery , wifi , etc . I am just really disappointed with camera . My battery usage for android OS = 8% and Android system 7% . This link might help you . http://leemn.wordpress.com/2011/11/13/rooting-and-installing-cwm-for-the-samsung-galaxy-note/

I had/have the same issue. I flashed the latest KKA ROM which flahes the KK5 modem. I deodexed it and turned off some unwanted system apps. Running the CF-Root KKA kernel and Android OS spikes to about 30-40% at times. I don't think it really has much affect on battery life. From what I understand and have read, it has to do with wifi Scanning repeatedly. You can adjust your wifi sleep policy to help this.

If it's keeping your phone 'awake' then you should install BetterBatteryStats which monitors Wakelocks. It'll tell you what OS services are going nuts.
It's happened to me a few times with rogue programs and USB host going crazy when I don't unmount correctly.

Same thing happening to me? Do you experience heavier drain on wifi than 3g?

Any misbehaving program either got their settings adjusted (stuff like sync frequency) or uninstalled. The USB host issue was, I think, because I unplugged the USB host cable without unmounting first. I just rebooted my phone in that case.
Well after countless number of hard resets....Android OS use in now around 11 %...
the difference i think was because of some apps....i'm not really sure...but this time i didn't install skype, winamp and viber...cuz every time i installed em...Android OS would be like upto 90%...
I currently have 2.6.35.7 with the KK1
would it be safe to update to the 2.6.35.14?
high OS battery is my only real problem.

I have the same kernel but with kk3....dunno if 2.6.35.14 will help with Android OS battery usage...my note still has no update available....
The only thing i can suggest for now its most definitely an app you installed which is causing high android OS usage...read my previous post....i hard reset my note installed all apps i had before but not winamp, skype and viber....i've kinda narrowed it down to these 3 after many hard-resets...
When i had them installed....my phone lost about 2% battery per hour on standby....But now it loses 1-2% in 8 hours on standby...
I'm having the same this with the high OS battery drain and have skype installed. Going to remove it and see if I get the same result. I didn't have the other two.
I've got the 2.3.6 KKA firmware installed but the drain just suddenly started one time (not when I installed it). I figured it can't have been the firmware itself, but much more likely an application I had installed or had updated.
Doesn't ICS have a better breakdown of service usage etc? Should be perfect if they have done this. Just have to wait and wait and wait for the ICS version.
Surely there is an app out there that can tell you what in the "Android OS" is causing the problem?
As an indication of how bad mine is at the moment, I was 100% at 9am this morning, 11:30am now and its down to 84%.. That's really awful!
I want to reset the battery stats as it could simply be that, but don't have CWM installed on this firmware. I'm rooted though.
[update] I've removed the battery stats file and restarted to see if that will help too.

Yea...let us know if removing skype helps....
oh and i installed Asphalt 6 from the samsung apps store.....its not available in the market....i had also installed it before hard resetting my note.......and guess what....high Android OS usage again.....damn....removed it....and i think its back to normal....but still have to see if removing fixes it for sure......
I guess the battery manager will count power used by all hidden processes and services as Android OS...
I had exactly the same experience with Asphalt 6 too. Good game, but why it sucked so much power when not even in use, hell knows!
Skype not made a big difference that I could tell, but resetting the battery stats made an immediate difference. 2 hours since charged and only down to 98%. Usually it would be 90-92% by now.

Hii,
Following are my stats
Android OS at 35% (Awake Time 1 hr 36 mins)
Display at 25% (on for 3 hrs @ 12% brightness)
Voice Calls at 13% (34 mins)
I don't know if the Android OS is a bit of a drain. Feels so. I think the Wifi Sharing and Wifi always remain on. So does Social Hub - use it to sync FB pictures to contacts as Social Hub offers great quality pictures unlike FB app or Friendcaster.
I do have Skype installed, but its never been initialised, never logged into.
I use GO Launcher, with 9 home screens. TouchWiz has been rendered empty (no widgets, short-cuts whatsoever running there)
I do use APW widget pack - Twitter & FB updates at 3 hours. GReader (with Google Reader syncing every hour). 2 Contacts widgets.
In addition to it, I also have the PowerAmp 4x2 music widget. Homescreen has Simple Calender widget, A "Make youw own clock" widget, a 1x1 Beautiful Widget Weather.
Dunno if the widgets are causing the drain or not.
Like you remarked, my battery drain ATM is around 1-1.5% per hour, with Wifi On and everything running and syncing (as above)
The standby time has been pretty decent. Whereas I am happy with charging everyday, if I could reduce the AndroidOS overload, I cud brighten up my screen a bit more
Dunno wat to do now. I don't wanna root now or try any techy stunts. The phone is only 2 days old yet.
Wud appreciate if anyone can guide me around. I will try to FORCE STOP the Wifi Sharing and Wifi Sharing manager, along with Social Hub, and EMail apps/services tomorrow.
Wud be amazing to lose 2% over 8 hours on standby. Awesome.

You're experiencing wakelocks. Might wanna do some research on the forum so that you can post logs for people to analyze what's really eating your battery.

THIS. I was having problems with wakelocks and traced them back to these few things below which got my battery life to greatly increase once disabled.
1) using dashclock extensions like FB and gmail
2) leaving google sync on in settings for the various google services
3) corporate email exchange servers
4) setting a long time variable for the phone to lock after the screen turns off (i did this to prevent putting in a pin to unlock but it kept the phone awake after the screen turned off)
5) live wall papers
There is also a known issue in the stock kernel that causes the phone to stay awake when it is supposed to go into sleep mode during extended periods of inactivity. This can be solved by using a custom kernel just as Franco r90 which has implemented patches in order to allow the phone to go into sleep to preserve battery. It is expected to be fixed in the next official OTA from google although this was also expected to be in 4.2.2 and was not fixed fully.
Same issue here. 4.2.2 stock kernel+rom, rooted
BBS shows "suspend_backoff" is at 45% no idea what's causing that.
Disabled pretty much all of the sync services but no improvement.
Interestingly right after the 4.2.2 update, the battery life was good.

Google play services has something to do with the high usage. Yesterday I was near 20% usage today I disabled it and android os is at 7%. It only affects YouTube app for me, but the browser version is fine. I haven't seen any adverse affects other than maybe losing updates to the play store and ota updates which I don't care about because that's what xda and Roms are for. Now it may be placebo, but it also seems like the ui is smoother. Battery has improved greatly with sot of 3 hours with 57% left.
Hi,
how do you disable Google play services?
Try using the app greenify if your rooted.. It's been helping my battery life. Use it on maps and that will help. If maps is set as a system app, move it or just install banks minimal gapps so you can download from play store.

Does GasBuddy still cause a battery drain problem for nexus 6p users?

So I noticed that the newest version of GasBuddy says they fixed the battery drain problem that was affecting certain phone models. I decided to test this the last two nights. I Uninstalled GasBuddy and left my phone unplugged while I slept. I lost 2 percent from 100 percent. Then last night I tried with GasBuddy installed. I lost 20 percent and the keep awake time for android os was more than 8 hours. Is this still an issue for other people? I love GasBuddy and I hate to keep it off my phone.

same - the update didn't fix it.
it did cause mad wakes for me, uninstalled it last week, i will wait longer until i know its fixed for sure
going to mobile version of the site from chrome and adding to homescreen for the time being seems to be better option instead of installing the app. Also this seems to be fast.
I haven't seen any battery drain at all, I read somewhere that it had something to do with bluetooth, which I don't use
Well I sent then an email hopefully they can fix the 2nd time around

Yes, problem still here, had to uninstall GasBuddy. Strange that it needs bluetooth and then GB doesn't even show up in BBS as holding a wakelock.
Just Greenify it.

Does that fix it? Have you tried it? I'm afraid that once it triggers bluetooth to keep the phone awake it may not go away even if you Greenify it. It feels like something wrong in the bluetooth stack that GB may trigger. I can't explain why GB doesn't show up in BBS or the Android battery monitor.

No, apparently not. After reading this thread, I started GasBuddy for the first time on my new phone and put it right on the Greenify list. Constant wakelocks anyway, and battery took a steep downhill trend for the next few hours.

Yeah, this may point to a Bluetooth stack problem and not really a GasBuddy problem, though the app triggers it. I'm sure there are other apps out there that trigger the same.
Wow thank you people... I noticed in the last weeks that, as soon as I use the bluetooth and then stop using it (I disconnect my device), if I let the bluetooth activated, my phone was awake all the time. I couldn't find WHY !!
Then I saw a post from someone who said that the fix was to remove gasbuddy. I couldn't believe it, but I did the test and it's true !!
Gasbuddy is the culprit
It seems to be fixed now, in the latest release. I'm running it and have actually uninstalled Greenify. I never turn BT off. Battery life is excellent.

I just did it again :
I installed GasBuddy, I turn bluetooth ON, I connect my headphone.
I start TuneIn and start playing anything for a few seconds. Then I stop it and I disconnect my headphone and I let the bluetooth on
here is the wakelock again.
I only connect to my vehicles and laptop with BT, which I've done several times since loading GasBuddy's fixed release. No issues. Ended the day yesterday with 92%, including a couple of BT phone calls from my truck.
I'm also using NapTime, using the Aggressive mode.

B321a is the firmware that you had problem with? There are many people that have same problem, but most of people experienced better battery life (like me). Hard to say what is going on, the only thing i can say is that my upgrade proces was B200 > B317 > B321 > B321a. I dont know if it does make any difference, but if you have time you can try the same process. No one can help you with this.

I dont knowm but i can tell you, i had the same problem with B200 when i got the phone, it was very frustrating, not even one day the batery could stand, but then i tried first beta of mashmallow and it got like twice of the battery life. Yesterday i was almost all day flashing some stuff (that didnt work) so i restarted the phone into recovery like 10 times, almost every time i had to restore backup and was trying something else, and at the evening i still had about 30-40 percent.

huawei´s smartphones are pretty weird, many people have various problems, some have problems that others dont etc, for example, many ppl says that B200 had better battery life than Marshmallow, for me, its twice as that, so its pretty individual, i was frustrated about this phone when i got it, at first i was happy for new phone, but the smile dissapeared very fast. Now, with MM im pretty happy, just pitty that we dont have CM or some mods (yet). Last thing i can suggest you ist, try to install xposed, then install Amplifiy app, i could help
im also desperate to the point the phones going!

its so god damn bad ............oh and greenify just says no apps need to hibernate.
ive got a couple of screen blemishes anyway so i might try a rma as its well with in warranty any how.
It seems that major prob for me have been google maps. Sounds like our device doesn't cope well with this app. Removing those off gave me normal SOT and phone can make 1.5 day easily
I'll try that howndoes one go about it ? I'm not rooted

In Settings > advanced > battery > consumption
What are the top things that are using your battery?
check energy plan
Did you check your energy plan settings? After I first upgraded to 321 I observed battery drain as well. I managed to solve the issue by changing the energy plan in the battery manager. After upgrade it was set to performance. Once I set it to intelligent battery drain was ok. Seems like after upgrading performance is the default setting.
PS: The names might be slightly different, because the langugae on my P8 is not english.

Terrible battery - no deep sleep

[FIXED]
The problem was related to the motherboard. With the new one everything works properly.
Hi,
I have seen a battery drain for a one week. I can't stand with it. The battery drains very fast - especially at night because I got over 30% battery lose with everything turned off! I tried to wipe cache and factory reset but these ways didn't work. I dunno what's going on but it makes me sick. I think that the phone doesn't go into the deep sleep, because "Android System" takes a first place when it comes to the battery usage. Actually the battery is quite new (97,5% real capacity) so I guess that's a problem with system. I don't want to root my phone because of the knox privileges.
I attached a screenshot which shows a night usage of the battery (when I unplugged - battery percentage was 75%).
Any solutions?
What I tried:
- turn off Wi-Fi scanning
- turn off Bixby
- battery saving mode
- wiping cache
- factory reset (but I've used a backup - if that matters)
Didn't work.. So please, help me
i have exactly same problem for about two weeks. Android system is the first place in battery usage, even before screen, if i dont use phone too much. On samsung community there more people with this problem.
Maybe problem is polish version? Też jestem z polski, jedynie problem mam na modelu z plusem. Jeśli znajdziesz rozwiązanie napisz je proszę (if you find the solution please write it here)
Try not to use a backup, just for a dat or so.
Do you use OPV CSC? Or XEO? Which security patch? My is september. I unfortunately use OPV (Orange) and maybe that's the problem. Can you o provide a link to the Samsung community discussion?
I did a totally clear factory reset yesterday and it still doesn't work. ?
My sot is around 2h...
Same issue with me also.. stand by time is around 8-9 hrs only..
Not sure what happened.. service center ppl asked me to change the battery only..
Turn off GPS and your battery will last forever. On my S8 plus I only turn on GPS when really needed.
I have exactly same problem in s8+. Android system draining my battery for about 2 weeks. SOT in 2-3h.
@vemangor i've got Xeo and problem exist.

2 weeks? Lol my problem has occured for the same period. I have no Idea what I can do with it. The biggest drain is always when the screen is off and I don't use my device .
Nothing actually works... the worst battery experience I've ever seen
same for 2-3 weeks..
1) display
2) android system
3) android os
4) device standby

Maybe you have apps that run in backround, just try to disable few apps(apps-show system apps- disable allow backround data usage),and disable body sensors from GmsCore from google, you can find it in permissions.
I dont have gmscore and playstore anymore on my S8+,and i have 8 hours SOT,these are the apps that i use right now,i've debloated everything that i dont use and i have Alexisrom 5.6.1

I use the stock rom. I do not wanna to install any custom because of the Samsung Knox. I did factory reset for few times and no one fixed the battery problem.
