Is there anyone here that has used LG V20 for more than 6 months and does not have any screen retention / burn in?
If yes, are you not using maximum brightness or is there any precautions that you have been practicing to avoid it? I am very tempted to get a V20, but the screen retention issue is kind of worrying me.

I've had my phone since July and I am noticing retention. It's only around the edges though (part of the status bar clock, nav buttons.) You don't really see it unless you're using a fullscreen app with dark colors around the spots. Only the edges of the screen burn really, the navbar buttons are never burned in all the way, just the bottom half and then it fades the further up you go. Overall not much of an issue. I usually stay at 40% brightness, however. I only notice retention when the phone is hot (ie, charging).
I've had mine since February and I don't have any at all yet. It's on auto-brightness at 30% right now. I'm not the kind of person that is on their phone all the time though.
Download sfilter from play store and activate it at 10 % with the filter you like and bye bye screen retention ?
I have had mine since 10/25/16 and have glaucoma so I use it all the time at 80-93% brightness and do not have retention at all. I have the screen off glow from second screen but they all have that and its only when the screen is off in a dark room.

Wouldn't Comfort view do the same thing unless it does not get dark enough?

In the app sfilter keep it in 10 % (to keep filter near to the real color of the screen) and you can uncrease or decrease brightness as you want its confortable don't worry

As you like you can keep it work all the day without problem at all without battery drain to , i was using it all days in my lg v10 and no image retention with the app working in background .
It's a good solution try it and tell me your feedback.
You can also open it and close it when image retention is gone .

Okay I have a problem That I hope can be fixed. I followed the guide I have a vs955 I did all the steps to the point they said it would take 20 minutes to boot so go to fastboot and flash bootbackup.img so i did that then it rebooted and i got the static thing but it seemed to boot I did not at this point know that if you turn off the screen and cover the prox sensor the screen will come back. so I read that flashing instead boot2.img will fix this I did this and it loads fine but now wants the secure password and everytime it reboots it drops a chance, im at chance 7 now so I have pulled the battery till I get information. I can not get into twrp via the software reset command with hardware buttons it just reboots the phone again. I can use flastboot, that is it. I am aware this issue is due to the data needing formatted in twrp again correct? Should I reflash bootbackup.img and then do the prox trick when at lock screen or what?
Thanks for your time.
EDIT: I forgot I had looked into this before hand and forgot and now feel dumb but I started this on 12a so I can just KDZ with LGup and Uppercut to 12a again right and just try again or stay stock?

Oh, I thought it was because I was running AOSP! I have this bad!
Aside from some on the secondary display a few months back, I haven't noticed any on my n918. Had it since February this year.
Try lcd & amoled-test on the play store and read the comments for using the app. Amazingly, it did fixed my retention and side ghosting on the color gray.
I have been using the phone in comfort view from day 1 and it's been ok so far!
My V20 has severe screen retention. I am always always on auto brightness or manually low.
I just played a game with a checkered background, went to browse the web and i could still clearly see it. That was just the most noticable. It happens with everything.
Just curious what everyone sets their brightness at?
I have had mine since September 8th 2017. So far I haven't noticed anything yet .............yet. (Knock on wood) ...ehhh. And I use my phone quite heavily. But I keep my screen between 21% and 30% ...(mostly stick to 25%. It works great, as long as I'm at home). (Edit - I forgot to add that I've had Comfort View enabled on it's lowest setting since about a month after I bought it. It helps with eye strain some...not sure about image retention tho).
It's obvious that higher brightness levels cause image retention faster. Try to knock down your brightness a little bit.
This issue isn't isolated to LG devices. I have noticed this on a couple other phones..and even lcd tv's. Our old Olevia tv does it. I notice it as im dragging images and windows around. Faint outlines of things "stick" for awhile. At least it's not like my Samsung S4. That thing has actual BURN-IN. There's no getting rid of that. Retention at least goes away in time.
I've been using the sfilter app on my V20 and two V10s. Opacity at just 5% on black color takes care of the image retention.

I was reading in the play store that sfilter won't work on the V20's navbar even though the setting for it is on. Other things I caught sight of were sfilter randomly force closing multiple times per day causing the screen to quickly become bright (or brightness flickering at random).
I only mention it because there were quite a few of them (reports of issues). Seems it's not been updated since June.

edit: *Burn in may not be noticeable at the early stages unless you examine the screen, I used "Screen Test" app from market, please download this or something equivalent, and examine your screen closely before you vote."
So this may not apply to those who just purchased their phone, but for those of you who got your phone around launch time, examine your phone for burn in. Use "Screen Test" from the market, and go through each color, looking for burn in. Oh this is a new addition, I noticed my burn in his worse when the screen is set to the lowest brightness setting. So repeat the test after you dim your screen.
I've had my phone over 2 months, downloaded "screen test" and guess what. The AM/PM up in the notification bar has burned in!
When you download "Screen Test" app, you will notice two things about your screen. Do not be alarmed, the following is normal.
1) Very thin green vertical line along left side of screen
2)Thin gray-shady horizontal bar on top, this is not the notification bar burning in.
What is not normal....BURN IN!
Can't believe the AM/PM is burnt in after 2 months. Shame.
Samsung has to update this by having the time hop around the notification bar instead of staying stationary.
Maybe a dev can work on this?
Got mine on launch day. No burn in.

They really need to change the time and AM/PM stamp from being stationary, they need to make it hop around the notification bar, or something. This is horrible, 2 months and AM/PM is burning in!
I'm sure the signal bars, wifi, and other stuff in notification bar will start to burn in next.
I'm also worried about the battery full message that stays on all night, that will start to burn the screen too.
No burn in here. Got my phone the third week of August.
i always thought leds burned cooler so the idea of burn in never even occured to me on this phone or any other phone for that matter...i doubt a warranty calim would fix it because i think all these vibrants will eventually have burn in...it wouldnt be easy i think to have an animated notification bar, but CM6 does have an option to remove and modify stuff on the notification bar like time and signal, wifi etc.
For making me notice this, I hate you.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
I have the green line on the left side and the gray bar up top, but no am/pm.
Do you guys leave the display on while it charges?
My display is only on while I use the phone, I got it around release date
Not totally for me, but I can see it faintly coming in. I have had this phone (my third one) for almost 2 months now.

I'm kind of curious why an AMOLED screen would get burn-in. There's no backlight, so the only image we see is coming from emitting pixels. Is there a coating on the glass that burns in?

Good question. Could the following be a possibility?
LED's eventually start to die off. Could areas that are always lit, for example the AM/PM is always on, thus those LED's are dying, which makes that area unable to to fully brighten, giving the impression of burning in, since the surrounding LED's are still bright.
That's just a guess on my part.
Also, are you sure Amoled's don't burn in, or is that just a guess/opinion/question on your part?
I can't really vote since I've only had it for a month and a few days, but I don't have any burn in. It's probably because it never disabled orientation flip and I do watch a some kind of video on the phone daily.
Had mine since day one. No burn in. my phone barely makes it to the charger most nights and some it needs an afternoon charge so I definitely use the phone quite a bit.

Damn it. Did screen test. Area where signal bars and time would be are clearly suffering from burn in. Awesome! This, combined with the generally bad software is making me consider selling this and never buying a Samsung phone ever again. (Sad, because their TV's are the best of the bunch.) To be fair, it's only noticeable when you look for it during a white screen and only in that area. Still, really Samsung? I've had this phone for 2 and a half months.
Had my phone for about a month and a half now, ran screen test and am seeing burn in
.
Got my Vibrant the day it launched - July 15th - no burn in, I use it quite a bit, but have the screen timeout after 30 secs.
Surely is burning in. Barely see it, but it is visible.

Since the Nexus S uses the same SAMOLED as the Galaxy S phones (which are prone to burn in due to its technology), I would expect it to have the same problem.
Just a heads up because someone is bound to come here complaining about it sooner or later.
The first thing people notice is the AM/PM burn in, so if you care, I recommend switching to military time
The a.m. / p.m. was removed in Gingerbread.
I will ALWAYS use ADW or Launcher Pro from now on to hide the notification bar to avoid screen burn. I also use a non-stock browser (Dolphin atm) to hide the notification bar as well.
My captivate has never burned in, but I do keep it on lowest brightness settings.

My nexus one has burn in of the notification bar too. The white color causes it but now since its black it will reduce it. But the white text like the clock time can still cause it. Use launcher pro to hide the bar completely is recommended to reduce the time showing a static image in one spot.

Its not permanant bro..
I've been turning the screen timeout off to prevent the screen from turning off while gaming until the game devs update for Gingerbread compatibility. Last night I left it on when I went to sleep and a scheduled backup woke the phone up in the middle of the night. Screen was on for 6 hours displaying the same image. Absolutely no image burn.
If you're seeing burn-in after using the phone normally, you need to exchange it.

Umm its not an lcd, its an amoled and they absolutely suffer from burn in. Just ask the many nexus one owners. It took only one month from brand new for my notification bar to burn in to the screen. All Samsung amoled screens suffer from this, including the nexus s will too. Unless of course you're careful not to allow any one static image to remain on the screen for too long.

This being my first amoled display - I was blissfully unaware of "limitations" of this new technology. So I had mine on full brightness ( 70 -90%) for the first week I would say
Then I read some other posts like ths - then realised this was not a good thing to be doing. Its like plasma technology (although much better than lcd/led in terms of picture quality) it still suffers with the "image burn in" with static content. It took about 9 generations of plasmas to "cope" with this issue.
SO i would not recommend high brightness for the first week to two weeks to allow the screen to "bed-in" but I am not sure of how oleds function or they even need this.
I do have a very faint yellow hue that matches exactly with the system bar at the bottom. But off course the system bar is static and hides this all together. The problem is when you change oreintations - mine is 99% in landscape so not noticeable for my use.
However in portrait, this again is only really visible on a minimum brightness setting and against dull grey background. If I put up the brightness up to 25% it is really difficult to make out & any brighter I cant see it.
If it bothers you enough then to minimise static content:
1) Screen timeout from 1 - 15 minutes
2) I also now use "hidebar.apk" to hide the system bar. Can be a bit buggy but works on the whole and is free. Use it mainly when browsing for a long periods of time.
3) in the default browser you can change to full screen mode, in settings go to Labs -> select quick controls. This gets rid of the bar at the top.
Finally, full screen web browsing !! Also the quick controls are slick, once you get the hang of it. Just press on the extreme edges of the screen to bring it up.
Or just get a replacement. In your case it sounds bad enough.
For me I cant notice any issue 99% of the time. Even If I knew about the issue beforehand, I think the screen is just way better than anything out there for at least a year or two. You cant fault the rest of the tab - its pretty mint
just so people are aware, this screens "issues" are only for the neat pickers, they are not visible under normal usage condition when the screen is set to auto or manual
the only way to see those is when you set the brightness all the way to Zero
as long as you keep brightness at 20% or more you wont see any of that
Is this the same issue with the Galaxy S1?
On the bottom half I have an area that is yellowish on white pages. And when you look at a black image in a dark room the black on that area is more dark.
When you turn the display off and look against the sun or similar bright light source at a shallow angle you can see that the golden mesh is not flat in this area. it is bumpy

For me there is a huge difference between not having any of those screen issues and saying 'its only visible when X is done'. I prefer to have a flawless screen If I decide to purchase, the money back guarantee / refunds are there for a reason.
I use autobrightness as well and it does drop to 0% when Im using my device in the bed room with the lights off. of course I dont have a Tab 7.7 yet but this is how its been since my Galaxy S days and I've never had to do certain things to prevent flaws from surfacing, it was just flawless to begin with aside from the Pentile limitations on the text.
Then again your opinion, my opinion. I hope to see a flawless screen on the Tab 7.7 though but Im not expecting much.
But we shall see once its locally available.

Dude, the 7.0+ is probably better option for you. Save some money and headache because the technology is samoled+ not ++ or whatever the next generation is going to be called in 12 months.
I would say "normal" usage patterns and many will have flawless screens. Blast it at 100% brightness with a static image for a week - you will not be a happy bunny

I'll just have to wait for one that is flawless and purchase it, putting the stock keyboard in landscape mode easily shows this issue. For what its worth this yellow tint no matter how slight will show up in HD movies
Even with my phones Im more of an indoors user so my brightness stays either auto or probably fixed at 20% and I usally drop to 0% when web browsing in bed.
But I'll have to see it in person.. or its another refund process.
EDIT:
Believe it or not some review reviews on the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note in HD format actually shows a noticeable hint of yellow tinting.. I've seen 2 HD reviews/previews so far and it looks good. Hopefully it translates well in real life.

dont get me wrong. all i am saying that for me i have to go through the following to see something.
1) reduce brightness to 0%.
2) use third party app to dim screen below normal brightness threshold.
3) use third party app to remove system bar
4) change background to a dull grey
so it all depends on ur definition of flawless.
as i say under normal circumstances it is a non issue.

For me its just a 3 step process
1.) set the brightness to 0%
2.) pop out the stock keyboard which is already grey
3.) check for color uniformity
Heres an example on my Galaxy Note: I've cropped the pictures and its a little misaligned be the judge if Im nitpicking or not.
My 'normal' conditions involve using the tab at 0% brightness in about 85% of the time. But I'll have to see it in person to judge but going with that you said then maybe the RGB stripe handles discolorations a bit better.
What am I supposed to see?
I can see that the left part looks "normal" and the right half has yellowish gray colors.
Doesn't seem like the clock or battery icon move around like Always On mode. Will this eventually cause burn in?

No. Amoled displays don't suffer from that. Even high quality LCD displays like found on the iPhone will have a hard time causing burn in.

The information provided above is false. Amoled screens can suffer from burn in. However, with the Always On Display, the clock moves around every 3 minutes or so to avoid burn in.

Well the numbers do change every hour and minute so I think it would be hard to get any noticeable burn in.

Unfortunately the battery icon and next alarm displayed doesn't change.

I was wondering this and also worried about burn in , so I turned off night clock because it doesn't move, and I'm asleep so I don't need it on.

I doubt it, the brightness would be low enough to minimize the risk of burn-in.
I don't think it would. I have mine set to only stay on from 1AM until 5AM (the hours I'm most likely to wake up in the middle of the night and want to see the time.)
I don't think 4 hours is enough to cause burn in being how the pixels are lit up very dim when using the night clock.

The pixels are stilll active though, shortening their "life". Will you notice any burn in or difference in screen quality in that area within a month or six? Probably not, but it'll burn in (or, leave a mark if you want) no matter what after 24+ months. AMOLED is a tricky technology, so I personally stay away from "AMOLED black" themes and whatnot. Why? The black areas are turned off, while the colored/lightened pixels are lit up. The areas that are "off" will have a longer "pixel life" than the ones most used, so it'll make a sort of "ghosting" effect after a while (2 years+). Using a theme or whatever that's "even", i.e not on and off at different places will give me an even "burn out".
I have no idea how good the EDGE's panel is though, so this is pretty much pure speculation, with some facts mixed in!
At first I was also worried that the pixels don't change position, but having it on for a week, I think it's too dark to cause a burn-in.
The Always-On clock looks like it'll burn in more because it's bright even though it moves around every couple minutes.
I use a black background. I don't think it'll cause uneven wear. Every time I use a web browser, the background is mostly white. I think that's enough to evenly burn in the screen. I usually keep the screen little dimmer than normal to avoid burn in., but I'm not afraid of ramping up the brightness when I'm outside under the sun or reviewing photos.
One thing I don't like about the night clock is that it shows the alarm that's couple days out. I think Samsung really need to fix this as this is obviously a bug, or they didn't test it enough.

Everything is pure speculation regarding the AMOLED panel around here, so we won't really know anything concrete until something happens, or someone gets a nasty burn-in. I doubt anyone will get a nasty burn-in though, but I guess someone will get some burn-in down the road, but that's pretty much expected.
I have a Galaxy Note (first gen.) that I used for about 18 months before getting a new device, and I've borrowed it to my mom. I checked it out again this week after not checking it out for about two years, and the display looks like ****, but it doesn't look more **** as it did the day I gave it to her, so it's "bad" if I'm trying to edit some photos, but it's not catastrophically bad at all. The only place it's burnt in is the statusbar, which is black on pre-lollipop versions if I remember correctly.
Hi clever people
So I'm a bit confused. I found this thread because I was afraid of a burn-in caused by the night clock too.
And I won't use it. But how about the always on display, then - by using that, is there a risk of shortening the life of the pixels? In that case, I'd just turn it off. But if not, well, then it's a neat feature
Well, I have set night clock every night, It doesn't burn the AMOLED screen. It's completely safe. Try it on your own, no risk They prevent burn in, because of brightness help keep prevent burn-in.

Thanks. I was more curious, though, as to how the Always on Display feature might affect pixels and the screen lifetime too, and thus, if it'd be better to not use this feature

No. Amoled displays don't suffer from that. Even high quality LCD displays like found on the iPhone will have a hard time causing burn in.

False. AMOLEDS suffer burn in, and LCDs will rarely ever experience it.

No offense that is the most stupid reason I've heard not to use dark/black themes. White themes ARE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO CAUSE BURN IN, PERIOD. You reduce burn in by reducing energy consumption and pixel usage.
So far this has been the best mobile device I have ever owned from Palm, to BlackBerry, Motorola, iPhone, Samsung, Nexus, Asus. This has also been the best OS I have used to date. No lag, no battery drain, no boot loop, and I get a removable battery.
Too many features others lack for the same price with less storage for the same money as the V20.
All that being said there is a problem with this phone that also ocurred with my V10. I keep the screen on at maximum brightness all the time since battery is not an issue with this phone (I have many spare batteries). About 7 months into my V10 I started noticing "ghosting" along the left and right edge of the screen. I use white icons which means I always have a dark wall paper. I could notice a very thin whitish smear along the edges. Its not bleed like you sometimes see on the second screen. What I notice goes away when you turn off the screen a while or you switch to a lighter colored background. Then I started noticing that icons for notifications were beginning to burn into the screen when using a dark background... Very odd because this is almost always an issue with OLED screens and not LCD displays like on the LG phones. Then the screen burn in started occurint on the main screen, typically when a bright image is on the screen for a long time and when switching to a screen image with a dark background the borders of the previous image are still visible on the new image. Once the phone is off for while, again, the retention issue goes away but comes back if the same image is on the screen for more more than 30 seconds or so.
Thankfully This does not affect video playback or video streaming. Its only with digital images, logos, or text.
For those not familiar with this problem its called image retention.
I placed a warranty claim on the V10 and a new phone was sent. I traded in the replacement phone immediatley for the V20. And now only 4 months into ownership the exact same problem is occurring... Grrrreat.
When I called LG about the V10 they had no idea what I was talking about. I pointed out that this issue has been discussed in the forums for the last year.
Are you also seeing this issue?

it will go away its not really screen burn in, lcd's have this issue and its common, turn screen off for 24 hours and let the lcd cool off and the ghosting will go away. The LCD's dont have the same screen burn in that the OLED screen would.. but latent images will occur if your keeping it on non stop and high brightness. IPS at its best.
also try and use the screen burn in app and let it spam the screen with the multi colors overnight, this will help cover the burn in like ghost images.
24 hours? Hmm... I will try 8 hours tops because of obligations I need to be available by phone all the time.
I have had IPS displays before that were on all the time and didnt see this issue before...and I run all my devices into the ground.
My Plasma TV has latency issues, my Samsung AMOLED displays have burn in, Samsung LCDs had vertical banding, this LG IPS display has latency...so which displays are immune from premature (in less than one 12 month) issues?

V10 , V20 , G5's displays ( maybe include G6) are quantum dot IPS so they all meet image retention . Other IPS displays never meet this problem
I noticed this issue on my v20. If the phone remains off for a bit the image goes away. It can be annoying but if it doesn't hurt the phone
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
The screen on the V20 isn't a regular IPS, it's a "quantum dot IPS" which may be more prone to some degree of image retention due to their form of illumination (I don't know a lot about it but it's a kind of atomic luminesence) which supposedly increases colour accuracy and range while lowering the power requirement for for the backlight.
It's possible this might be the root cause of the 'ghosting' but I'm mostly guessing.
Ironic though if QD displays are prone to ghosting, and LG knowingly equipped thier phone with an always-on second screen with that tech.
Yes. I'm on my 2nd replacement for the same issue. The phone I'm typing on is now having it. The screens last anywhere from 6 to 8 months before breaking down.
Glad to see that this isn't only happening to me, I find it super annoying, I never had this happen before on other devices, and it's an unacceptable occurrence that of course nothing will be done about it, I for one can't wait to get rid of the V20.
same thing started happening to my v20 recently, around 4-5 month old phone. it's an annoyance that should happen to a flagship phone, but it looks like we're SOL...

Tilted Pixel lines Problem.
I am also facing same problem with my 3 months old LG V20 Phone.
My phone have one more Problem.
I can see pixel lining (in whole screen) even though it is quad hd display. But the problem is that it is not horizontal, It is tilted 10 degree, and there is no vertical lines that I can recognize . And it is annoying to me.
If the screen is equally pixelated then I should have seen both vertical and horizontal lines of pixel equally like you can see in TV LCD Displays.
I encourage anyone whose 12 month warranty is about to expire to file a claim. And not use the phone at maximum brightness unless outdoors. Luckily I had some other issues with the phone like NFC and the speaker being somewhat distorted and the phone was replaced for those issues as well. If you see any deterioration in any other hardware aspect of your V20 you should definitely file a warranty claim.
I plan to keep this warranty replacement for another year as the only phone with the image quality I like is the Sony Experia XZ Premium which doesn't work with Verizon. Believe it or not I compared the V20 to virtually every new OLED flagship anr they all had a dingy yellowy color compared to the V20, including the new iPhone X. The Sony was the only phone that had both the color accuracy like and LCD but the deep color pop of an OLED. Best of both worlds with the only 4K screen and battery life better than my V20

It is my understanding that the V20 will get image retention, but not actually burn-in. Is this true?
Also, I have searched for solutions to the image retention problem. Most solutions advise the use of apps that cycle through colors or simply leaving the device off for awhile. I used a color cycle app, which helped, but the issue returns. And leaving my device off is, simply put, not an option. I did come across a post about replacing the thermal paste. Any truth to this method?
But I'm wondering, if I go through with taking my phone apart to apply paste, wouldn't it be beneficial to also replace the screen as well? Or am I missing some factor I haven't read about yet?

Once image retention sets in it will return once the screen is on for long enough. I ran those screen burn in apps overnight for months. Made no difference at all. The only option is to completely replace the display if you can get it cheap.

No need to do all that, install Night Screen by paper airplane dev team and set the slider at around 80%(make sure you're on the moon icon). Also let the screen cool off before you do this and set it up. You won't really notice the filter much and all the retention problems will be a thing of the pass.
@porscheoscar - No kidding lol Replacement LCD are not cheap. I'm gonna keep an eye on them cause I want to keep my V20 as long as possible. One of the last phones, that I'm aware of, I can carry an extra battery for. I love switching batteries while my friends with their latest, greatest phones watch their battery percentage like a hawk hehe
@salvichulo - Thanks for the tip ^_^ I installed it & am giving it a workout. I try not to be on my phone a lot, but I'm a gamer ;P Once phones became powerful enough to really game on, I killed my Xbox Live account & game exclusively on my phone. When I get the money I'm gonna look into getting an Android Emulator for my laptop.
A bunch of people are on here saying that they notice this ghosting problem after a few months, and that after that their phone's screen deteriorates rapidly. I just got this phone for Christmas, and I love it, but I noticed this annoying ghosting problem immediately. Should I be worried? I'm a little nervous it's getting worse.
why don't you root your phone? By rooting your phone you can change color setting by using custom kernel it help you with this problem .

I don't really know how to root my phone, it seems complicated, and wouldn't it void the warranty?
