Screen Burn In !!!

edit: *Burn in may not be noticeable at the early stages unless you examine the screen, I used "Screen Test" app from market, please download this or something equivalent, and examine your screen closely before you vote."
So this may not apply to those who just purchased their phone, but for those of you who got your phone around launch time, examine your phone for burn in. Use "Screen Test" from the market, and go through each color, looking for burn in. Oh this is a new addition, I noticed my burn in his worse when the screen is set to the lowest brightness setting. So repeat the test after you dim your screen.
I've had my phone over 2 months, downloaded "screen test" and guess what. The AM/PM up in the notification bar has burned in!
When you download "Screen Test" app, you will notice two things about your screen. Do not be alarmed, the following is normal.
1) Very thin green vertical line along left side of screen
2)Thin gray-shady horizontal bar on top, this is not the notification bar burning in.
What is not normal....BURN IN!
Can't believe the AM/PM is burnt in after 2 months. Shame.
Samsung has to update this by having the time hop around the notification bar instead of staying stationary.
Maybe a dev can work on this?

Did you examine the screen using "Screen Test" or an equivalent app?

They really need to change the time and AM/PM stamp from being stationary, they need to make it hop around the notification bar, or something. This is horrible, 2 months and AM/PM is burning in!
I'm sure the signal bars, wifi, and other stuff in notification bar will start to burn in next.
I'm also worried about the battery full message that stays on all night, that will start to burn the screen too.

No burn in here. Got my phone the third week of August.

i always thought leds burned cooler so the idea of burn in never even occured to me on this phone or any other phone for that matter...i doubt a warranty calim would fix it because i think all these vibrants will eventually have burn in...it wouldnt be easy i think to have an animated notification bar, but CM6 does have an option to remove and modify stuff on the notification bar like time and signal, wifi etc.

For making me notice this, I hate you.

I have the green line on the left side and the gray bar up top, but no am/pm.
Do you guys leave the display on while it charges?
My display is only on while I use the phone, I got it around release date

Not totally for me, but I can see it faintly coming in. I have had this phone (my third one) for almost 2 months now.

I'm kind of curious why an AMOLED screen would get burn-in. There's no backlight, so the only image we see is coming from emitting pixels. Is there a coating on the glass that burns in?

Good question. Could the following be a possibility?
LED's eventually start to die off. Could areas that are always lit, for example the AM/PM is always on, thus those LED's are dying, which makes that area unable to to fully brighten, giving the impression of burning in, since the surrounding LED's are still bright.
That's just a guess on my part.
Also, are you sure Amoled's don't burn in, or is that just a guess/opinion/question on your part?

I can't really vote since I've only had it for a month and a few days, but I don't have any burn in. It's probably because it never disabled orientation flip and I do watch a some kind of video on the phone daily.

Had mine since day one. No burn in. my phone barely makes it to the charger most nights and some it needs an afternoon charge so I definitely use the phone quite a bit.

Damn it. Did screen test. Area where signal bars and time would be are clearly suffering from burn in. Awesome! This, combined with the generally bad software is making me consider selling this and never buying a Samsung phone ever again. (Sad, because their TV's are the best of the bunch.) To be fair, it's only noticeable when you look for it during a white screen and only in that area. Still, really Samsung? I've had this phone for 2 and a half months.

Got my Vibrant the day it launched - July 15th - no burn in, I use it quite a bit, but have the screen timeout after 30 secs.

Surely is burning in. Barely see it, but it is visible.

Notification bar burned onto the screen

I just got a new nexus one swapped 2 days ago from HTC under warranty. I'm running MIUI on the new nexus and I just noticed that my notification bar burned onto the screen. I had MIUI on the last nexus for about a month and nothing happened to the screen, had to get it changed for different reason.
I was thinking it was due to the fact that miui's notification bar is transparent or somehow the screen didn't turn off during the night, but then all of the other things(icon, etc.) would have burned onto the screen.
Im going to call HTC and find out what they have to say. But does anyone have any insight to this. I really dont want to leave MIUI, really like that rom.

This is going to be a risk you run with refurbed Nexus Ones. Most people run them with white notification bars. I have two Nexus Ones and even being careful I have some burn-in. I run my everyday Nexus with a black notification bar and still there is slight burn in(uneven wear). I've never personally seen a Nexus without some form of burn in(uneven wear) from the notification bar. It is the most persistent part of the UI, even when you hide it with something like LauncherPro, etc.., it will pop up when in the market, and other apps that do not have the option to hide it. etc..

I'm running mine with the stock white notification bar as I'm 100% stock. I don't see any burn in on my screen. Any ways to check with an app that makes it more visible?

try going in to the Gmail app, then go in to an email with not much text and scroll down until you have a white screen, and look at the left side of the screen(in landscape) against the white background.
that said, if you do not notice it now, I WOULD NOT GO LOOKING FOR IT...you will most likely find it and it will start bothering you.

I guess thats why gingerbread went with black notification bar.

I only notice the burn in on my N1 when I'm on Google's homepage

I'm not gonna look for it as I wont be able to forget about it.
Hopefully gingerbread shows up soon so the black notification bar wont burn into my screen.

Yeah, I noticed it using Floating Image myself, a nifty program that floats images from your camera dirs and the internet past you. Noticed the notification bar area looked odd, then looked closer and realized it was darker.
I've since started using a ROM with a dark notification bar, maybe mitigate it a bit, although I suspect the clock being in the same place all the time will burn up there too.

Too much for not looking for it. I just went on the Google homepage in landscape and I saw a tiny tiny bit of burn in like barely noticable. So I turned my brightness to Max to see if it was more visible and I couldn't see it on 100% brightness. Only when its on lowest brightness am I able to see the burn in. Good enough for me

yeah pretty much anything that is persistent is going to possibly cause an issue. I'm glad Google is going with black now. I think it looks better and is safer for our AMOLED screens. As far as I know, this is not an issue for folks with SLCD Nexus ones since LCD phosphors have a much higher half life so do not show this issue until you are pretty much ready to upgrade your device....if it ever shows. LCD tech is much further advanced in this area than AMOLED.

Just be careful of using high brightness: it will age the pixels quicker and make it even more noticeable. Best thing to do is use a launcher like Launcher pro and hide the bar as much as you can for awhile to "wipe" the worn pixels. Same with any apps that allow for hiding the notification bar in settings. That will improve it some and then you can use the black bar that will come with Gingerbread and you should be good. It wont be gone 100% but will be barely visible at that point.

I always leave my brightness on automatic and now i hid the notification bar in launcher pro. i'm set until gingerbread

My 2nd hand Nexus One has burn in of the title bar. TBH I'm not that bothered; its very unlikely I'll even still have this phone this time next year. How long do some of you folks really think you'll own this phone for? Its aged well, but in 12 months time, I reckon it'll be a pretty small percentage of people posting now who still use one of these with any regularity.
I just ignore it.
I do use a theme with a black bar now anyway.
I wonder if the SAMOLED stuff suffers this issue?

That's been my experience with HTC, they've never hassled me about anything I've wanted help with. I sure wish they were making the next Google phone.

Super AMOLED burned in

I just realized my screen has some burned in. I mean, like the clock on the top right side. When I'm viewing video, I could still see the stain of the clock. Does anyone have the problem?? I've switched ROM and still see the burned text/clock..

I repair TVs for a living. And if its true burn in ... its permanent ... however for that to occur you would of had to keep the screen on for quite a while and a steady long period of time

It can happen. I have the AM/PM burned in on mine, but it's only noticeable if I use Screen Test app.
I suggest you toggle the AM/PM off if your ROM allows it and use a thinner font. It's also a good idea to avoid white or bright themes.

My phone is less than a year old and I've noticed the same thing too. I've noticed letters from the keyboard a few times too.

My Vibrant has the same thing. It's not noticeable most of the time for me so I dont mind. I also had a Captivate last year that had a blue tint burned in around the entire perimeter of the screen.

I've had my phone since august and no burn ins here.

Just call tmobile they will send a replacement. Ive sent two phones because of it.
Backup before you call. They will want you to do a factory restore for troubleshooting.

Me too. rush pipe game cause some temporary burn in on my phone. I stop playing the game.

AMOLED = Miniature Plasma's?
If our screens behave anything like a plasma i'm wondering if you can fix it by using a similar "screen wipe" method that is used in plasma's. A lot of plasma owners confuse Image Retention (IR) for Burn In (BI). Burn in will never go away, but image retention will. If you don't want to send your phone back, you may want to try using a flashlight application that turns your screen all white. That way your screen is firing at full brightness and hopefully it can get rid of those ghost images on your screen.

I had a slight burn in since December of the AM/PM. However since than I changed to Military time and now I can only see the M in the clock area. It also helped that I changed ROMs and such. However It can get annoying. I may just have it exchanged though. Knowing that I will most likely get a refurbished one...

It is because of the AM/PM burn in that I try to use the hide clock option in EDT roms and CM roms. No more burn in!

Hmm, I guess if it isn't true burn in, that would work.
Only way to test that is if your getting a replacement for burn in, go ahead and try that, running your screen at full brightness all white, and see if it goes away.

Screen susceptible to Burn In?

I recently came across an article that states that AMOLED screens had problems with their screens burning in, especially the AM/PM on notification bar or the charging status of the phone if plugged in and left overnight. I also saw these problems on the Captivate thread here on XDA
So will it be the same problem with this phone?

I had an HTC Desire before upgrading to my SGSII recently. Had it for over a year and never had any problems with burn in.
I believe the AMOLED screen on the Desire was made by Samsung as well. Not sure how much the technology has changed with the super AMOLED +. I guess time will tell!

Same again.... I have a launch day Nexus One (18Months Old) and there are no signs of burn in/image persistence on the screen. Unless you are planning on leaving your screen constantly showing a static image I wouldn't waste your time worrying about it.

Ah ok that's the one from my thread. You must understand it's temorary... So it's not a "real" burn in. It disappears after 10 seconds.

Good to know. But that still sucks though.
And on Galaxy S Variants the most usual permanent burn ins are the AM/PM on the not. bar that users post about.

There is a good chance for a burn in on the sgs2... but only if you use high brightness all the time, long screen on periods with no movement of graphics, so that the pixels can change.
tip: set your phone to 25% brightness (this will make the battery life even longer then 10% or 50%)
tip: set the phone turn off screen after 30 sec.
tip: Use a "Screen flashlight" app (fullscreen of red,green,blue etc) from time to time in all colors, to get all pixels changed and see if there is any problem.

My nexus one has screen burn of the notification bar. Many of us have this issue. All amoled screens can have this problem, nothing you can do really.

That's my experience with SG2... nothing I can do about it!
I've tried running Screen Burn-In Tools (some app from Google Play) about an hour a day for a few days now and still the damn ugly burn-in is there!
Since I bought the phone from a dude, I can't return it to Samsung and stuff. Guess I should look closer when buying a phone from strangers! And I should've documented myself about the GS2 problems before buying one.
Didn't think an expensive phone could have these ridiculous problems!

Galaxy S2 Weird Screenburn issue

Ive had this powerhouse of a phone for just under 16 Hours, Screen has only been used for around half an hour etc,
Ive just noticed some screenburn on the screen The four buttons - (Phone, Contacts, Messaging, Apps) are visible on the screen when I look at a grey-ish background (Such as the speedx initial bg). Ive been through 6 Galaxy S2s, Three of them had this issue - Is it me, or is this a bit weird? Phone screen on for only 30mins since it was factory shiny&new, and theres already light screenburn.
Is this a characteristic of SAMOLED Plus, or is this a faultly batch? (Im on my 5th replacement phone from Amazon due to various faults). It seems a bit weird, a phone thats cost near £475 inc has this kind of issue.

It doesn't look screen burn as it looks coloured. it might be the app you are running has transparency.

afaik, OLED does suffer from screen burn like plasmas do - potentially, but not that quick!

Well, it can happen. After a month i started seeing the same thing when pulling down the notification bar. So it's not app related, cause i don't use other launcher, i can clearly see the shadow of the 4 icons for a few seconds when pulling down the notification bar. They disappear pretty quickly, i'm not that bothered about that.

Also notice even if you just got the phone the very first second the digital clock actually burns through the notification tray and slowly disappears, I think its a technology limitation on the SAMOLED+

i have proplems with colors like grey and dark blue
i will attack photos for u to see if u have the same proplem with colors like me
and my phone is only 14 day old
i really dont know if the colors are normal or not
p.s: make ur display 60/100 to see the colors
on my sgs1 the screen was way better
the first two pics are of the grey color ( to see if u have the same like this pic open msg and write a messege there is an option to write sound messege click on it
it will show the same thing see if u have the same like me
and the third pic is of the home screen to compare see if there is something wrong with ur screen
also could some one please look at his device and my pictures so i can now if there is something wrong with my device

Seems like a SAMOLED+ limitation as you say. I was just curious, it shouldnt bother me much whilst im using my phone normally.

If the screenburn gets really bad, I suppose i can always just use the 2yr Warranty I have on the phone to get the screen replaced. Waste of an invisibleshield though.
Considering the phone is less than a day old, the screen might go really weird in 2-3 months - Which is what im worried about.

I would have to agree that the S1 screen is was a better display even if did have a more jagged edges on the fonts.

I have a similar issue in the messaging app, but with the keyboard. If I 'enable'(/turn on/whatever) it then disable it, it's 'shadow' stays there for a couple of seconds. It is however not a permanent burn in, so I think it's just the screen's limitation and it doesn't really bother me as this screen is still by far the best I've ever used.

wouldn't that screw up video playback though? sounds more like a software bug

I turned the clock on the notification bar back to 24hr , as i read/saw the AM/PM can burn in as they are displayed a lot longer then the 24hr digits which move at least every hour.

I just discovered this issue last night. I had been noticing a few lines here and there on my regular usage and I thought it was just a defective screen. Through the use of Terminal's blue screen, I realized that it wasn't defective.
I have a car dock, and use PowerAMP in the car every day. As you can see above, those burn ins are the buttons in PowerAMP. I went to take a picture of my SGS2 with my N1, and while looking at the blue screen on my SGS2 through the display of the N1, I noticed the N1 had the issue too!
I'm trying to run JScreenFix now to see if it solves the problem, but I highly doubt it.
Will Samsung even honour the warranty for things like this?

I have an SGS1 of 1 year old and my SGS 2 bought in may. Side by side, I will never exchange my SGS2 for another SGS1. Screen quality (colours and details) is by far better on SGS2. No comparision
I also don't see any burn in in both devices (keybord test, status bar...). Maybe some defective devices around that you just should exchange

If you want to test your screen or anything on your phone type *#0*# into the keypad
If the burn don't show up on green blue or red then its something else

I also have the same issue. I can see shadow of the System task bar. It was quite vivid on RED and it shows as lighter blue on blue colour. And on white it became pale white. Bright yellow as well on yellow.
I've tried various things like put the screen on full brightness on Black and Red and blue but still have the shadow there.
I will see if i can get my warranty repair.

I just wanted to confirm that the SGS2 sure can have a Burn In, as it was declared before as "Burn In Proof".
I noticed it while playing the recently released Game "Osmos HD". The game's color temperature is pretty blue-dark, and thats where I can see a slight burn in of the Task Bar.
Afterwards I checked my screen with various LCD Test programs and BAM - with low brightness I see slight burn in of the whole task bar. I can even see the signal indicator, the battery percentage and the spot where the clock sits.
But its only visible at very low brightness and a blue-purple coloring.
I called my brother, who has the Galaxy S2 as well, and he directly went and checked with LCD Tester as well. He, too, reported to me that he also has a slight screen burn in of the task bar, tho its very tough to spot. I guess, if you dont know its there, u wont notice it.
We both have our SGS2 models now for roughly a year, and the screens already seem to decrease in quality and stability.
I am a fan of Super AMOLED+ color quality and contrasts, but my 2 bothers and me have all the yellow tint issue, tho its not very drastic, and all devices start to get kind of a permanent screen burn in.
Its really sad to see that the otherwise fabulous screens already show its age. I hoped that Samsung learned from the SGS1's issues and user feedback, but sadly, it seems like they kind of ignored the fact that the Super AMOLED cant take much action...
My girlfriends Desire HD's screen (which was my phone before I got the SGS2) is still showing good colors. Sometimes I think about getting an LCD device again...

I think what most posters in this thread are reporting is Samoled ghosting, ie image retention for a few secs. Its not permanent, unlike burn-in, which some people may experience after some months of usage.

No, its not ghosting at all.
The taskbar image thats burned in is from MIUI. And since I am running either and Sammy ICS Build or Androidmeda for a while now, this image must've been there for longer than I thought.
As I said, I just noticed it yesterday while trying out the Osmos HD Demo. And its clearly the MIUI taskbar. Must be there for more than a couple of days already.

No screen burn on my Galaxy S2! Btw, been comparing screen to iphone 4/4s and Galaxy S2 screen way better! You have to have some sort of "telescopic" vision to notice resolution advantige on 4s... Who anyway reads webpages fully zoomed out? LoL... With magnifyng glass?? Contrast and colors advantige is huge on galaxy side....

For how long are you using ur Galaxy S2 now? Mine is running non-stop since a roughly a year now.
And yes, it seems like a permanent screen burn in on my end. Just checked again, same visibility of the probably weeks-old MIUI taskbar.
