Make Taskbar Grey?

Is there any way to change the taskbar at the top from black to gray like stock android?

The dark grey it is now is useless, I'd turn it black and spare battery and burn in problems...

Hey thats my morph... The text is still white... And it should have the h symbol... It works though.. What are these burn in and battery problems you talk about?
I don't think it was ever proven a black led uses less power than white and my g1 has had a white bar for almost 2 years and no burn in problems...

G1 was LCD pixels were lit regardless of color displayed.
On an AMOLED screen pixels represent black by turning off. Black cannot be burned in and will not use battery. The symbols could still burn in eventually but fortunately the time is always changing as are the signal bars on tmobile
There is plenty of proof floating around from the nexus one (also amoled) saving battery by having a black theme. I'm not gonna dig it up, it's there. They ran multiple tests on identical phones black saved most then red, I think green and blue were mid and of course white is the worst.

So your saying lcd screens don't have burn in? Or that oled is worse? Not meaning to put words in your mouth... I just enjoy a white/light look..
I still think that is a marketing ploy by apple not to buy oled screens..
I think the phone will be obselete by the time it starts to deteriorate...

LCD does have burn in, the difference is on LCD any color can cause it, so on a g1 making the bar black has no benefit.
I'm not trying to tell you what to like, believe me I love android's ability to let us have this choice/conversation.
Clearly google agrees with you on preferring a white look: first the notification bar, then the market, now maps.
I agree deterioration will probably not be an issue for most, as long as you don't set it to stay awake while charging and leave it in a browser window or something all day every day.

Also, what did apple say about oled? I dint know they had a stance on it. I figured they would be going there soon for either phones or laptops

You think there'd be an easy way to do this.. I don't know why but I'm highly turned off by the black bar. Brings back memories of the WinMo nightmare. Lol

I'll send a message to cloverdale and manup... See if one of them went to change the xml so we can have black font in the status bar...

Actually modern LCD displays do not suffer from burn in. I have had an LCD monitor on my windows computer with the exact same taskbar displayed for months and even years, with zero burn in. I have no idea about OLED though.
What's more, even if LCD did suffer burn in, changing the taskbar to black would then cause the taskbar area to not burn in while the rest of the screen did, leading to a situation where you could still see the spot on the screen where the taskbar resided. That's why a lot of plasma TVs and dvd players have the option of putting grey bars on the side of an image that does not fill the screen, with the idea that the grey is closest to what the rest of the display is showing.
The bottom line is I don't think anyone needs to worry about burning in their LCD screen. This is the Vibrant forum, so we should be concerned only about OLED here. So, does anyone have a real answer about burn in on OLED screens? Wikipedia seems to think so http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_LED.

So the life is 5 years at 8 hours a day? Half life is about 30 months... Like I said before... We will probably have a new phone by the time out screen starts to be less "vibrant"

Screen Burn In !!!

So this may not apply to those who just purchased their phone, but for those of you who got your phone around launch time, examine your phone for burn in. Use "Screen Test" from the market, and go through each color, looking for burn in. Oh this is a new addition, I noticed my burn in his worse when the screen is set to the lowest brightness setting. So repeat the test after you dim your screen.
I've had my phone over 2 months, downloaded "screen test" and guess what. The AM/PM up in the notification bar has burned in!
When you download "Screen Test" app, you will notice two things about your screen. Do not be alarmed, the following is normal.
1) Very thin green vertical line along left side of screen
2)Thin gray-shady horizontal bar on top, this is not the notification bar burning in.
What is not normal....BURN IN!
Can't believe the AM/PM is burnt in after 2 months. Shame.
Samsung has to update this by having the time hop around the notification bar instead of staying stationary.
Maybe a dev can work on this?

Did you examine the screen using "Screen Test" or an equivalent app?

They really need to change the time and AM/PM stamp from being stationary, they need to make it hop around the notification bar, or something. This is horrible, 2 months and AM/PM is burning in!
I'm sure the signal bars, wifi, and other stuff in notification bar will start to burn in next.
I'm also worried about the battery full message that stays on all night, that will start to burn the screen too.

No burn in here. Got my phone the third week of August.

i always thought leds burned cooler so the idea of burn in never even occured to me on this phone or any other phone for that matter...i doubt a warranty calim would fix it because i think all these vibrants will eventually have burn in...it wouldnt be easy i think to have an animated notification bar, but CM6 does have an option to remove and modify stuff on the notification bar like time and signal, wifi etc.

For making me notice this, I hate you.

My display is only on while I use the phone, I got it around release date

Not totally for me, but I can see it faintly coming in. I have had this phone (my third one) for almost 2 months now.

I'm kind of curious why an AMOLED screen would get burn-in. There's no backlight, so the only image we see is coming from emitting pixels. Is there a coating on the glass that burns in?

Good question. Could the following be a possibility?
LED's eventually start to die off. Could areas that are always lit, for example the AM/PM is always on, thus those LED's are dying, which makes that area unable to to fully brighten, giving the impression of burning in, since the surrounding LED's are still bright.
That's just a guess on my part.
Also, are you sure Amoled's don't burn in, or is that just a guess/opinion/question on your part?

I can't really vote since I've only had it for a month and a few days, but I don't have any burn in. It's probably because it never disabled orientation flip and I do watch a some kind of video on the phone daily.

Had mine since day one. No burn in. my phone barely makes it to the charger most nights and some it needs an afternoon charge so I definitely use the phone quite a bit.

Damn it. Did screen test. Area where signal bars and time would be are clearly suffering from burn in. Awesome! This, combined with the generally bad software is making me consider selling this and never buying a Samsung phone ever again. (Sad, because their TV's are the best of the bunch.) To be fair, it's only noticeable when you look for it during a white screen and only in that area. Still, really Samsung? I've had this phone for 2 and a half months.

Had my phone for about a month and a half now, ran screen test and am seeing burn in

Got my Vibrant the day it launched - July 15th - no burn in, I use it quite a bit, but have the screen timeout after 30 secs.

Surely is burning in. Barely see it, but it is visible.

Screen Burn In

Since the Nexus S uses the same SAMOLED as the Galaxy S phones (which are prone to burn in due to its technology), I would expect it to have the same problem.
Just a heads up because someone is bound to come here complaining about it sooner or later.
The first thing people notice is the AM/PM burn in, so if you care, I recommend switching to military time

The a.m. / p.m. was removed in Gingerbread.

I will ALWAYS use ADW or Launcher Pro from now on to hide the notification bar to avoid screen burn. I also use a non-stock browser (Dolphin atm) to hide the notification bar as well.

My captivate has never burned in, but I do keep it on lowest brightness settings.

you know what? I just now noticed that!

My nexus one has burn in of the notification bar too. The white color causes it but now since its black it will reduce it. But the white text like the clock time can still cause it. Use launcher pro to hide the bar completely is recommended to reduce the time showing a static image in one spot.

LOL I am sure this will cause a ruffle tuffle. But I know how you guys like to ***** about stupid **** so here goes.
I have keyboard burn in on portrait mode. Simple test. With no notifications and keyboard up pull down the notification window. You will see that the keys's outline still show. Now hide the keyboard and do the same. You will see the outline still in the notification pull down.

Oh boy; I'll let others have a go at this post.

I don't know what your talking about. The keyboard does not show through the notification bar for me

Its not permanant bro..

I've been turning the screen timeout off to prevent the screen from turning off while gaming until the game devs update for Gingerbread compatibility. Last night I left it on when I went to sleep and a scheduled backup woke the phone up in the middle of the night. Screen was on for 6 hours displaying the same image. Absolutely no image burn.
If you're seeing burn-in after using the phone normally, you need to exchange it.

its an lcd not plasma. you wont get burn in this quicly if any. you have an issue with your phone.
the other day someone posted something like that. about burn in issue in weird vertical lines. i thought he is talking about the screen grid pattern that its more obvious in some poor designed screen than others.

Does the nexus s use a different type of screen than the galaxy phones? My vibrant uses a super amoled screen, which I believe have more of a chance for screen burn in than plasma.

I actually have this problem lol Even the XDA app back button is burnt in and can be seen when a gray background is shown.....Basically every time you open the notifications tab.

Umm its not an lcd, its an amoled and they absolutely suffer from burn in. Just ask the many nexus one owners. It took only one month from brand new for my notification bar to burn in to the screen. All Samsung amoled screens suffer from this, including the nexus s will too. Unless of course you're careful not to allow any one static image to remain on the screen for too long.

hmm weird i dont remember having this on my galaxy S. this is really weird to hear :/

Super Amoled Plus screen burn-in

Its been about a month since the launch of the SGS2. I know it may be a bit early but has anyone noticed any image retention or screen burn? I haven't as of yet and I but i do keep my brightness usually on the lowest all the time im at home. Outside its on Auto.
Also even if anyone hasn't how long will it take to happen since I know that all OLed displays including TV's eventually retain images?

I have a Galaxy S. For my phone, It took around 4 months to burn down some pixels after keeping the Screen on for about 3 hours a day. The Status bar was visible on blue background along with screen burn where AM and PM is displayed.
Best Practice is to keep changing the Orientation of the phone frequently and use a Theme with transparent status bar and switch to 24 hour clock to prevent burn in of AM or PM pixels, since they are ON all the time.

Yeah, im trying to do that as much as i can especially changing the orientation with the market and some apps.
So once your pixels gets burned in, can you change them back to normal by putting a different colour over the burned area or is it for good?

I think UK as all the Europe uses 24h clock. So no need to worry about am pm burn in.

"4 MONTHS" any sign of any burn in on my screen and i`ll be looking for a replacement under the warrenty. If this is the case then i`m afraid the Amoled technology is a complete failure in my opinion...!!!

Basically LED displays comprise of 3 LEDs. Red, Blue and Green. When they lit up all together, the form white. Unlike the LCD technology, LED's are diodes which convert electricity into Light and hence they have a lifespan. They gradually start degrading which reduces the amount of light that they emit.
Blue has the highest tendency to degrade faster, hence the AMOLED screens have a Bluish tint to compensate for the same.
Suppose you use a 12 Hour clock and you have AM and PM displayed all the time, as a result of this, the blue pixels that are present at the AM, PM display location degrade, which causes a color imbalance. I.e the other pixels emit more light, but the "Burnt" pixels emit less light. At a later stage when the other 2 LEDs start getting burnt, you can see a patched up section, which represents the burnt pixels, which could be spotted on specific backgrounds.
There is no way to fix screen burn than to get a new display. There is a HUGE topic about screen burn in SGS section. It's worth a read.

I got my galaxy s in August last year and there is a large amount of burn in especially where the clock is.
You can check the individual colours in SGS tools or the xda app when you first open it.

I haven't had any burn-ins whatsoever with my SGS. I had it since October and used it everyday. None. Just checked after reading this thread. None whatsoever.
Koreans are very critical of things they buy. They are one of if not THE country where consumer reports are spread fastest due to their connectivity with the web. Things like this is just NOT accepted over there. And there would be a country outrage especially regarding Samsung products. I highly doubt this is the case. Maybe you have a one off defect.

The Burn-in is caused by the short life of the blue pixel.
I suggest don't make blue pixel lit in the status bar.
I don't know if there has any launchers could make Time and Signal status area displayed in yellow or green rather than white.

My nexus one had status bar burn in within the first month. Still there, no way to reverse it.
But using launcher pro is best solution which hides the status bar completely.

Same here I have had an S1 since it was launched. I used it heavily every day, the screen was on a lot as i used it as an ebook reader. There is zero burn in (checked using screen test).
A friend has one as well, which he bought at the same time as me, he is very critical of every detail, and there is zero burn in on his either.

I`m going to use my SG2 as I want, i`m not going to worry about screen burn in, if it happens which i doubt it,i`ll be demanding a replacement . No one should have to use any programs to hide status bars etc, just to try and prevent it. If it happens then in my opinion its a defect and should be replaced.
Did anybody try for a replacement with the First SG that suffered screen burn...

That's what two year warranties are for I guess. Like post above, I would love to hear of successful replacement for original sgs.

Many people exchanged their nexus one, desire, galaxy s, for a new screen and the burn in just happened again after a month on the replacement. Not much can be done just live with it.

How serious of a burn are we talking about here? A slight shadow or a full on watermark type situation??
Just curious as mine is en route but if this is as bad as some are making out then it will be a deal breaker for me....

warranty ain't issued by Samsung for nothing. Loving this phone. Its blazing fast since day 1 and ain't getting slower. Over 150 apps now installed. Still as fast ==3

Doesn't effect the user much. Barely visible on daily use.

I9000 since august, no burn in so far , used everyday..
I9100 since, well less than a month, ofc no burn in

Its very very light, barely noticeable unless you look hard for it on white web pages. This is prob why not everyone sees it cause they are looking for something much worse.

I have a slight temporary image retention on my phone, it only lasts a few seconds after using the keypad or the circular lock screen etc , but its pretty noticeable on a dark background
Sure, it fades after a few seconds, but I'm quite concerned that it'll cause lasting damage over time.
I'll try get some snaps, later.. my phone is er, 3 days old

Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology

It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.

If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!

came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?

But in reality it is not a real problem..

AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.

Hey there, might be interesting to know on which built your phone is operating?
Mine was delivered in may w/ 2.3.3, since I'm on a 2.3.5 based rom, I got better colors / sharpness and less side effects (greenish tint)
Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.

I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

My notification area is a bit darker than the rest of my screen. It's only visible when screen is white, and I can't identify any leftovers from any icons like the battery or Wifi icon.
My SGS2 is about ½ year old, and in daily use it's no problem at all, but I wonder how it will look when my SGS2 is 1 or 2 years old
