I have a Moto G5+ that's about 2 weeks old. It keeps dropping calls out of the blue.
I'm running LOS with flar2's Elemental Kernel. I've tried with VoLTE on and off, as well as WiFi calling on and off. I've triple checked my APN settings and they look correct. I have TMobile for my carrier.
I think when I use WiFi calling the call doesn't drop, but I know for certain that it does when I'm using my cellular network. It happens whether I'm out walking around or sitting in the same place. I've always had a strong signal while this happens too, which leads me to believe it's something else wrong. It happens randomly. Sometimes I'll get through and entire call, sometimes I'll drop. One time it dropped, I called the person back and said a single sentence and it dropped again.
Do I have a bad phone, or is something else the issue?
Any cell tower servicing going on in your area. I know in Lexington KY for the last few months there's been several days that my service just starts to drop out. The signal is strong and then it dies. When I drive home, which is out of town, there is never any problem with clear and constant signal. A few people have told me that all the gsm carriers are upgrading their services in that area.
I don't think so, but it's a possibility.
You may want to check on the LOS thread. Looking for answers in a general forum when running a custom ROM is never a good idea. Check in the thread for the ROM you are using, there may be specific issues there that do not affect the stock ROM

I searched there first, as well as in the Kernel thread. I found nothing in either, which is why I posted here.

well let me start off by saying that I have read all of the threads from day one about the fluctuation issues but have never yet experienced it myself, until today.
I have never had the issue before but today when I woke up I turned on my phone after its charge, i have never turned it off during a charge before, and I am experiencing this problem now.
My question is, is it time to root and flash a new radio to the N1? I have put off rooting because I havent had a reason to yet.
Thanks in advance for the input.
Ps. i am not new to rooting so I aint scureedddd.
oopsieee wrong section, can a mod please move this to either General or Q&A!
thanks

I don't have an answer for ya, but I moved the thread
thanks for moving mindfrost, i had a brainfart lol.
anyone with input? i'd much appreciate it. The fluctuation is still going on but its not such a big deal because I am usually on wifi. Should I just wait for a new OTA from google?

I don't see how these things could in any way be related...Who is your carrier? You may want to contact them and see if they are having issues with a local tower or have a tower out so are now experiencing a weaker 3G signal and thus bouncing.
I am on T-Mobile, trust me I was just as confused. I know that turning off a device while charging "shouldn't" have anything to do with fluctuating signal thats the only thing I did.

have you tried another radio (software) version? what version are you using now?
i am on ere27
my radio is 4.03.00.21_2
he's on stock too...I only have this problem when holding the phone. Herd its normal.
I just started experiencing the 3g problem too. Didn't have this problem before. Completely stock (unrooted) with the OTA update. I thought it could just be the weather or some temporary maintenance but I've been experiencing it for about 3 days now.
Southern California area.
This better get fixed, I bought this phone the day it came out.
This is totally wierd, I have had no problems whatsoever signal wise with my nexus. Actually I have had a significant increase in quality and signal coming from a Mytouch3G. I have none of the problems at all that are described with signal, screen or anything. Got lucky I guess.
@pongalong - thats about the same time I have been experiencing the problem. Its def not the weather here because it has been beautiful the past week, highs in the 70's but in Feb we had a colossal snow storm which knocked power out and I had great signal then, its so odd.
@sinister - I didnt have any problems whatsoever until about two days ago.
Matter the towers are being worked on... one day my signal was horrid only the next day to find out the upgraded the towers where I live....
Tmobiles great here in portland oregon..
Went about 45 miles out of my area and the problem seemed to disappear (although it seemed to be around when I was indoors - probably just due to interference). Hopefully they're just doing some work in my area like mentioned above.
Any improvement or updates from the OP?
Hopefully T-Mo is almost ready for 21Mb/s.
It seems to have somewhat went away..it still fluctuates but only where I am below 2 bars of 3g. I'm getting used to just switching to 2g only in low 3g areas. Then I get full edge usually. Kinda weird but ill just wait for an update I guess.
Ever since the last OTA update I have had issues with data connections, and the signal itself seems to drop randomly. I am less than 2 miles from the tower, and on my Galaxy Tab the signal is nice and steady. On the Evo, sometimes I have not only no 3G but not even slower than heck connection (no 4G where I am staying at the moment.)
I've reloaded with no change in behavior. I am completely stock, and unrooted. Revision 003 device in case that matters.
Thanks...
I started a thread on this last week, what worked for me was downgrading the radio to the second latest instead of the latest. Haven't had that issue since. Ymmv though

It's a sprint thing. Im rooted with older version of fresh and yes, recently the data connection has just dropped. Browser sits idle and I get impatient. Claims I've read come from theories that sprint is configuring network for both data and voice at same time. Svdo. So I dunno, we'll see what pans out.

It's also a sprint thing. My speeds are the same, but at least I get a consistent data signal now - before I downgraded, my evdo signal would just disappear for a minute or two periodically before coming back. It hasn't happened at all since I downgraded my radio.

this thread, but make sure you let it go for a while when flashing - DON'T PULL THE BATTERY. It may take a long time to fully flash, but don't get impatient and pull the battery, people have bricked their phones doing that. just let it do it's thing. There should be additional instructions in that thread if you've never flashed a radio before and the radio that worked best for me was EVO_Radio_2.15.00.09.01.
Great. I'll try. I don't mind mucking with PCs since I work with computers for a living, but when it comes to my phone I'm really careful- especially since I'm job hunting these days. Can't afford to brick the phone, but this is a bit difficult since it is often unwilling to connect.
Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

It could be maintenance or a tower failing near you.

im sure you are right, but doesn't anyone think it should just work from the store? i know its a novel idea but i think top notch phones should work right out of the box.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?
ok so i have a weird problem.. i go to call people and it appears that the number is right for the person i try to call....but i get connected to random people... sometimes when i answer the phone i get nothing but silence. happens to my wife to. don't know if this is a sprint problem or rom. im on stock cm9 alpha 5. when i went to the sprint store and asked them the guy said something about solar flares and the way the planets are aligned.. idk anyone else having this issue or knows how to fix it.. any help is appreciated. and sorry i just quickly checked other forums and didn't find anything
Is your wife's phone also on CM9 Alpha 5? Are you using an Airave at home? If so reset it. If not, does this only happen at home or in the area? If you are both on the same ROM then take one phone back to stock and try it for a couple of days and see if that fixes the problem. Then you know it might have been a bad download resulting in a bad flash.
my wife has a samsung nexus s running "vhgomez36-ICS-NXS-4G-4.0.4 [LOTA r1]" but i will try resetting the airave to see if that helps...sorry for the double post i didn't think it posted in the q&a section

Haha, that explains it. It's ok. It will definitely be the Airave. This never happens outside your house right?
Hello everyone! I have a simple but quite annoying issue with my Defy, and I'd really apreciate your help to find some kind of solution or enlightenment =)
Every time I make a phonecall or recieve one, i loose all data conectivity. I don't know whether this happens because of weak carrier reception, thus the phone being unable to boost it's signal strength because of using it as a phone (just guessing here btw). Or because I am running Quarx's CM9 and this belongs in the bugreport thread (in which I am unable to post this and other problems I've been having ).
This is my first smartphone (and a damn good one!) so I don't know if this happens to every Defy owner, everyone or whoever.
I'd really appreciate any piece of wisdom you can share. Thanks in advance
It's normal. Can't do a thing about it. You only have one antenna ;-)

I liked it more when I could blame my carrier though , now I can only rant about them overcharging me...
Just for clarity, are you saying it's normal because of CM9? Thanks
No, I thing every phone got this.

My phone is dead-stock and I absolutely have never experienced this issue. Had the phone since Nov. 2010.
Seems that that is only true on 3g with a full bar. On less it switches to 2g so you won't get an interrupted call. I saw it today and I had good reseption. Try setting it to 3g(WCDMA) only and see it you still got it.
It is carrier related imho. My current carrier doesn't have simultaneous data+voice, but my previous carrier did. It is even explicitly mentioned somewhere in the website of my current carrier that data disconnects when calling. However this wasn't the case in my previous carrier, downloads etc would continue while I talked. So go ahead and blame your carrier

Thank you both once more!
I'll try and set it to 3G only mode and see what happens, then report back. I also will be switching carriers as soon as they let me take my phone number with me (sometime around april) and see if there's a difference.
