Hello guys!
Today i found Samsung J5 at the pavement, closed but when i tried to open it it opens just fine, has a sim card inside and even a home lock screen photo with a girl and a boy that i see at the background. So someone has lost it.
I'm trying to open it to send a message to any contact of the owner, that i have found it and to come get it back.
I tried to get into recovery to mount and get the passwords erased (according to a video i found at youtube -link at the bottom)
but the recovery it has now doesn't work and when i try to install the twrp through Odin it says "custom binary blocked by frp".
How can i get it to work?
Or any other ideas?
Thank you!

I see you have honest opinion, but sorry, since the owner didn't enable oem unlock, there is pretty much nothing you can do but flash stock rom using odin and use it yourself...
Just insert that sim card in another phone and wait for calls, or try importing contacts from the sim card onto your phone, if you really want to find its actual owner...
Edit: It might require a password for the sim card.
Ragazzza, i can not use it for myself, even if i wanted to, cause it is locked through and through. It has FRP enabled and it is unusable. I went to the company of the sim card and they told me they can't do anything, i just have to go to the police and they find the owner. I wento the police and they told me to take it to them. The only thing if that i'm afraid they maybe will take it for themselves. That's why i do not want to take it to them. Of course, if i can't find a solution i will do it.
Gent, well i haven't thought of that! But i do not think that it'll work because what we do in Greece is we tell the company we have the number to deactivate the lost sim, and give us a new sim with the same number. Also, the sim card has a pin, so... :/
So the sim i have now in my hands is useless, propably. I'll give it a try though, thanks for the idea!
Don't wipe the device in stock recovery. You will end up locked out by FRP.
Is there an sdcard in the device that could give clues to the owner?
Also I find it hard to believe that the network company of the sim card cannot help. If it's contract they should have no problem tracing the owner via the sim card number or even IMEI of the device.
Is the SIM card actually locked?
ashyx, i do not know where you are from but in Greece, unfortunately, things do not work like in other countries. I have gone to 2 stores, in both stores told me the same thing. "we can't do anything sorry. Go to the police to declare it lost". I do not trust the police will do it's job rightfully so i prefer to search for a solution, even if it takes time.
I got FRP lock, indeed. No sdcard :\ I actually found a program called Wondershare Dr.Fone but neither of my phones are supported....

So at the moment you are FRP locked because you attempted to install TWRP or can it still boot to the lock screen?

I'm surprised the owner hasn't attempted to call the phone.
The first thing I do is call the phone if I lose it and hope someone answers.
It should still be possible for you to pick up the call even if it's locked.
ashyx, not if the sim card is locked. If it was only the phone i wouldn't have a problem answering any calls to give the phone back. But it's both sim and phone locked. Or else i wouldn't have a any problems solving this

Hi PLEASE HELP,
I've done so many Magics simlocks via code. Any problem except the last guy. He says that after unlock he cannot make any calls.( his phone was new he didn't check if he was able to make calls before unlocking procedure). He says no radios, roms etc was flashed before. I instructed him how to restore via nandroid to the orginal firmware/ wipe the phone etc. He says nothing happened still the same issue. Now phone doesn't ask for unlock code so I thing it's nothing wrong with my service - simlock is gone ,it's something with his phone. He also says that he has got an access to the Internet on several roms. But I think that he thinks it's my fault -but I'm sure it's something wrong with his phone! It's impossible to damage the phone trying to unlock via code based on IMEI. What do you think guys ???
ps. i've asked him to try call 112 - and he says it works, but if he dials another numer the phone says "not registered in network" or sth. like that. He says that the same sim card working fine in another phone. He has tried many sim cards and still the same issues...
thanks for help...

Hi guys - first post here, wish it was under less stressful circumstances. Anyway - got a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 today, I have no previous experience of such things, anyway, started it up, transferred contacts etc, installed the sniper program (for root access), Uploaded axera, went through all the motions but after reboot it was still the stock samsung apps, i did get the yellow android triangle digging and googled it which said just to pull the battery (maybe this is where things went wrong) - now the phone works with the standard samsung ROM but after entering PIN i get asked for SIM network unlock PIN. I am really ****ting it incase i have to send it back and they won't fix it - have i screwed my phone? please someone help!
There are a whole lot of missing steps there, and some of them are the important ones.
So far, it looks to me like you have locked it to a different carrier than your SIM card is for. There are unlock solutions on here to extract the unlock code from the phone. You will need to do one of these. If you cannot get past that screen try booting it without a SIM card installed (you will need to enable USB debugging to get the unlock code).
Hi guys,
I recently picked up a used S4 on Craigslist for cheap because the guy "screwed up" using Odin and flashed something that caused his phone to not register on any networks. I figured, what the hell, it's cheap enough and I might be able to restore it. So far I've restored the Rogers firmware over Odin and tried installing a custom rom/recovery too. I'm still getting this problem unfortunately. The IMEI reported with *#06# and in the status screen does match the sticker on the inside of the phone.
So I'm sure everyone's going to suggest that the phone was stolen and the IMEI has been blacklisted. My provider (Fido/Rogers) apparently doesn't care if the IMEI is blacklisted, they'll let it run anyway. I called up Fido anyway (since I'm a Fido customer) and asked them about the IMEI of this phone and they say they don't have any record of anyone calling in reporting it stolen and they don't have an IMEI database so she didn't have much to say about it.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've also flashed just the kernel, and I will flash a modem onto it too. I know my SIM card works, and both my SIM card and the last owners SIM cards don't work. I know the radio works because it picks up the emergency signal fine, and the SIM tray isn't damaged because when I put in my Fido SIM the Fido APN's automatically come up, as well as the lock screen goes from "No SIM inserted" to "unregistered SIM." Could my EFS partition be borked? Wifi works and IMEI shows up correctly.
The buyer said he would take the phone back if I can't fix it, but I want to try a bit more before I give up. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, that would be great. Thanks a lot in advance XDA!
Summary:
-Used S4
-Owner flashed something wrong in Odin
-Gets "Not registered to network" error, unregistered SIM error
-Tried restoring
-Tried new ROM/Recovery
-Carrier says IMEI is fine, also tried directly registering the IMEI to my account
-IMEI is correct in settings/sticker on back of phone
-Wifi/everything else all works
Sounds like it's SIM locked to a different network. Try the the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285431

My girlfriend has a Bell sim, which when we insert, gives us the "Please enter unlock code" screen.
My sim does not do that. I know this device is for my carrier, but I figure the easiest way to get this going is to just unlock it and see if the problem persists on other networks.
I've tried that unlock tutorial before. The first time I tried it, when I just got the phone from the previous owner, it said "Golden-backup does not exist" so I couldn't do the restore step of that guide. After Odin-flashing everything and starting over, I can't even get into the UMTS menu anymore! I'll try another restore and give it another go though.
Edit: Another problem. I did a restore again using Odin and notices that it never properly wipes the phone. When I finish flashing, my Wifi still autoconnects on first boot, and every few seconds, a process crashes causing the phone to freeze. Has anyone heard of this kind of problem before?
Quick update:
Managed to Odin-flash it to the earliest firmware I could find for the phone without any crashing or freezing problems. Trying to do the network unlock method mentioned online. It does not work, even though I'm following the instructions to a T. Could it be that my EFS partition is borked and that the NV rebuild can't happen, meaning my radio configuration would also be borked?
Edit: Oh and when I booted up my phone for the first time, the phone was actually ON Fido! But within a few seconds, it went back to "Emergency calls only."
Hmm, that is some odd behavior, and definitely not a carrier lock. Shame it's never that simple to fix.
Not quite the same as your issue, but I lost my ability to make and receive calls after flashing a newer modem on an AOSP firmware. Flashing custom kernels, older modems, the latest stock rom and kernel were no help at all. I tried everything I could think of short of groveling. In the end the only way I got everything working again was to flash the original factory firmware my phone shipped with, factory wipe it from stock recovery, then flash it again. If you've already tried that (and I'm guessing you have), consider contacting Samsung regarding warranty. They've been really good to me in the past, even with second-hand phones.
I can confirm that Odin doesn't clean everything out. In my trials I also noticed that flashing via ODIN without a factory reset presented no setup wizard, caused lots of FC's and left some previous files hanging around.
Sounds like a bad sim tray.

I had trouble with my handset after it got run over in the street, making it's otterbox earn it's money. The only bad symptom after that episode was Emergency calls only kept recurring.
I cut a tiny square of transparent scotch tape, avoided touching the sticky side, and placed it squarely on the SIM chip's backside, to make it fit the sim slot more snugly. It sounds like you should try stacking two or three layers on your chip as it sounds to be more loose than mine is.
Hi everybody! Thanks for all the help trying to fix it! It ended up being that the guys the previous owner had unlock it used the debug-menu unlock method and my phone was one of the ones that doesn't accept it. Lots of other people complained about similar problems as me in the free unlock method thread. In the end, I paid for the FastGSM USB Unlock method and it fixed the problem.
OH MY GOSH YOU JUST SAVED ME from buying another phone!! THANKS so much.. I added 3 layers of tape on the back of my sim and it works!!! weird.. cause I have the Dual Sim.. and it was the first sim that would not work. the second sim was fine.. anyways.. THANKS SO MUCH!!
Yesterdag I received a Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 from a friend.
He said the phone came from India, but he was sure he was unlocked.
After putting in the SIM card, the phone did nothing, it didn't recognize the SIM and didn't even ask for a PIN Code.
So I thought that he was locked, I wanted to use *#0011# to go in ServiceMode and unlock the phone. But after going into the ServiceMode, it didn't show any options at all. It was just a screen with ServiceMode on top.
I know there are other codes to come in ServiceMode but even these wouldn't work.
After that, I did *#06#, and a little popup came on the screen with "IMEI null/null"
I found the fix on the internet for this, but even this was without succes.
I tried several other roms and modems, but that didn't give me any progress.
Does anyone has an idea how to fix this? I really don't know what to do anymore.
The phone is brand new. Nothing has happened with it.
Thanks in advance!
Flash one STOCK ROM in Download Mode using Odin 3.09
*EDIT: If after these steps the imei still null/null then the problem is hardware. U will have to let ur phone in SAT (Technical Service Assistant)
I find that almost impossible to believe. In my experience with the Galaxy series of phones over the past couple of yrs, IMEI's do not disappear for no reason all by themselves without anything being done to the phone. 'Your friend' has left out a bunch of information here.

Hello, thanks for the fast reply.
I don't think so, he unboxed it, tried a sim card. After he saw the sim wasn't read at all.
He gave the phone to me ..
He came straight out of the box without a IMEI number in the phone.

Are you sure, Its not the case of Bad ESN? If so there's no way around.
Otherwise you can Order for Unlock code using your IMEI and purchase it through eBay or any other site.
Usually that's how i do. Easiest method to Unlock the device.
what means bad esn ? and how can i verify if it's bad ESN or not ?
i can purshase the code yes but how will i put it ? it don't let me type the code (phone is permanently locked)
thanks

If i describe an easy way about Bad ESN then it would be like, The Phone that you own has been stolen earlier or previous owner has reported it to respective carrier or company itself to Block its IMEI. In such case, Phone will be no longer Phone. Means for calling purpose.
If its a Clean ESN then things are pretty easy as it sounds. At first make sure you're not using the same Carrier SIM as your phone came with. Any other SIM, Insert it. It will basically asks you to enter code. Which will given to you once you purchase through either eBay or any Online site where they Unlocks IMEI for the device specific. Usually its a 7 Digit code, But may vary, enter exactly the same as provided by respected Seller or Anyone whom you've contacted. As you'll have only 10-Attempt to Unlock your device. Once it done, It will show like this: Your Device has been Successfully Unlocked, Now you can insert any SIM-Card, it will work.
To Check whether its been Bad ESN case or not, Just Google it: Bad ESN
thanks for these informations, i don't think the phone is stolen, it works with the owner's sim card, but it seems like the 10 attempts has been tried and can't enter unlock code anymore (hard locked) what to do in this case ?
thank you

I'm not sure, In this case there's any reset counter available or not. But surely if you want play around with your device with Owner's SIM in it. then do few things.
-Factory Reset your device, without inserting any SIM Card.
-Afterwards Purchase Unlock Code either online or contact Carrier company whichever company's SIM Card working in your device and ask them for Unlock Code.
They will basically asks few details and give you Unlock Code for free, Otherwise purchase it through online, but before make sure to insert any non-legit sim in it whether Enter PIN menu POP-Ups or not.
Do these, will possibly reset the counter for you. Or else i'm helpless buddy.:fingers-crossed:
All of this were done and the counter is still not reset, i'm hopeless, thank you anyway
i've heared there may be a solution by uploading a new qcn file with QPS, any idea ?
hard reset is the same thing as Fatory reset ? else ?
thanks
