Third Party Launchers on Moto G5 Plus? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi,
I just wanted to check if someone is using 3rd party launchers on Moto G5 Plus?
If yes can you please check the memory utilization? I have tried using Nova launcher and Nexus launcher. I found that all these 3rd party launcher are always running in memory. While I don't have any issues with the stock launcher. Please see the attached screenshots.
I want to check if this problem with all Moto G5 Plus or my device only?

Maybe it is just me but i would expect a launcher to be always running, it is a launcher and surely it needs to be constantly in memory or it wouldn't work right.

I don't think so. Nova is active 22% on my Moto G5 Plus with ViperOS installed.

Then it looks the problem exists only on Stock ROM. So can we treat this as bug?

that cant be right. since ure using a launcher all the time its a given that it must run 24/7 as a process/program. since the stock launcher is a system app it may behave differently than a third party launcher but worrying about a launcher running in memory all the time is pretty superfluous imho...

You are not using launcher when you are not using phone. There is no need to keep running launcher when screen is off.
I don't know much about Android architecture but I assume that thread/process can sleep so process itself exist but is not active.
Still I can be wrong, some Android developer can clarify this. One thing I am sure that on my phone in settings I can see that Nova is not active for 100% of time.

Just checked it on my phone, running stock Nougat and using Nova Launcher from day 1. Average memory use of 52mb, max memory use of 120mb. Running 100% of the time.

If you have enabled accessibility service or notification service for Nova or other launcher, then it will remain active 24/7. Even if launcher is not active all the time but notification handling process or accessibility process is always active, even when screen is off.

It should not be running always 100%. This results in battery and memory consumption. I think this could be due to some bug in Moto Stock ROM

Nexus and nova launcher
Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk

I use the ADW Launcher.
Avg memory use: 36MB
Maximum Usage: 105MB
Frequency: 56%

86% here with nova and stock Rom. Max ram usage 90 mb

Nova Launcher, because I am used to it and because I paid

Strange ... looks like we must have the same launcher but mine looks different

There is "keep in memory" setting in Nova options.

I am on the stock ROM and Nova is currently showing memory usage of 115MB, and always running for the frequency, again it is the launcher so why wouldnt it be in memory constantly?

It isnt running though, it is resident in memory in preparation to be used, if i go look at settings which i don't use that much it is also in memory all the time.

Hate to split hairs, but disabling is not removing. Will making sure these dont inadvertantly start up and chew on cpu and memory help performance? Possibly. But removal also gets you that much needed storage back.

That list is probably about 100-200 MB of storage. Are you really that starved that 0.1-0.2 GB makes a difference?
Does anybody know how to remove the Verizon pre-loaded contacts? It's been mentioned that Verizon has locked them down, too. You used to be able to delete them but not anymore. I remember that you can freeze com.partnerbookmarks (apologies if that file name isn't 100% accurate) on older phones to get rid of the carrier-provided bookmarks and was wondering if there was something similar to get rid of the Verizon contacts. Not a dealbreaker, but just curious.

You can't remove them. But, in People, menu, contacts to display, hit customize, then disable the Verizon Wireless preset contacts.

Im actually very happy with it stock as is. I would love bootloader unlock only because everyphone i've had was able to be. Im loving active display and touchless control. The camera is great compared to what i had (droid razr hd). Using the Xposed framework allowed me to have the little UI tweeks i like. I would just love a stock 5x5 or 4x5 launcher. I would use nova and always did on AOSP, but I like the Circles widget, it just will not work with 3rd party launchers. Wish we could figure that out too

I'm the same way.. I went from a Motorola electrify to a gs3 on uscc and was excited to finally do what I wanted with my device but with the radio problems of the Samsung devices I opted for Motorola device when switching to Verizon. I do miss that I cannot use my SD card and I only have 11 gigs of free space but I have awesome coverage no dropped calls and now my gs3 is more of an mp3 and game device.

So...does disabling a bunch of apps do the same thing as freezing them?
I was able to go through and disable most if not all of the bloat on this phone and I guess I just assumed it was taken off line. Is that not the case? If it is the case, I highly recommend it as it doesn't screw you out of future stuff.

Stock ROM is Gravy

I am a huge fan of stock Android. But with root and bloat removal I just don't really want anything else.
Touchless control is the shyte and functions flawlessly.
The only thing I would like to change is a stock icon/themed status bar.
What do you guys think?

Install the xposed framework first, within that you can download gravitybox and motoxposed as modules. Make sure theyre enabled. Then go into either the gravitybox app or motoxposed app to make changes.

Couldn't agree more.
The reasons I installed custom roms in the past were to increase battery life, install some feature that was missing from my device, or run smoother.
The maxx has everything I need. There aren't any features out there I'm dying to get. Google has solved that with updating through play store. My battery life is nothing short of incredible. I have mobile hotspot thanks to root. And this phone just runs great. No lag at all.
I'm happy with root access on this device. It's amazing

Use 2.2 not 2.3.1 for the xposed framework. You may have issues otherwise.

Any battery issues with Gravitybox/Xposed? I have tried it twice, once on the old root, and again after starting fresh and using the new root, and both times had to disable it after a few days because it tanked my battery.

I had thoughts about that too, but I haven't noticed any difference in battery life. I don't activate too many of the options, like coloring, so that might have something to do with it. I might try disabling it for a week and see if anything is different. If I do, and notice anything, I'll be sure to let you know.

I don't know of about you guys but my phone is horribly laggy right out of the box. I'm on the very first version of the software as I have frozen OTAs. I frequently get sent to other apps or the home screen even if I go really slow when multitasking between apps. This phone is just not that fast and I suspect it's Verizon plastering a thousand apps on the phone as usual.
I have frozen and or deleted every single thing Verizon that I could find but I still suspect there is some crap somewhere hogging resources. I guess it COULD be the phone but I highly doubt it.

I have to second that. I was concerned moving to this phone that it would be slower than my GS4, but I have been very pleased with the responsiveness. No problems at all.
I am rooted, using gravity box, and have bloatware frozen, but even before that it ran extremely well.

Google launcher experience

I just want to share with all of you my experience with Google launcher. After installing the launcher, I notice the tablet is running really smoothly. No lags at all. Also apps open faster and reduce battery usage. Please do the same and share your experience here and let us know.
Note: if you are a big fan of the magazine UI you will lose it because it is a part of the TouchWiz. Not a big deal for me for faster performance, it is actually worth losing this feature.

Holy wide margins Batman!
Just think, we've paid a premium for a screen that's a little over 10 inches wide in landscape and launchers like this or Touchwiz piss away about 3 inches of it on margins. This is my #1 reason for installing Nova Prime within 20 minutes of owning the tablet LOL.

Yeah true. I guess its just the novelty of sideloading Google Launcher that's not really made for the Note Pro or something. I found it way too limited compared to Nova. I had Nova Prime on my Note Pro within a few minutes out of the box!
Wow clean home screen.
I try to use as much as I can on mine LOL.
Back on topic though I wouldn't mind always on search from Google Now Launcher. I currently run Switchr as a left sided swipe action so I wouldn't make use of the swipe for Google Now.
Currently I have long press of home button to trigger Google Now and then have to say Ok Google to bring up voice search (or double tap home to bring up Samsung's S-Search which I never use).
^ Those Widgets look great. Specifically the weather, calendar and tasks. Mind saying what those are?
I usually keep my main homepage pretty clear but have calendars and other Widgets on the secondary pages. But the Note Pro is so big there's room to stretch out a bit!
Anyone care to share their Google now apk. Thanks in advance

There's one thing that bugs the crap out of me with the google kitkat launcher. When you hold down on the home screen and it brings up the 3 icons for wallpapers, widgets, and settings. "Settings," when you press it, it takes you to GOOGLE settings. The settings app that most people are unaware even exists. I keep forgetting and clicking on it hoping for the normal settings. Annoys me to no end. I always immediately revert to nova at that time.
There is a xposed module to configure the GEL called "xposed gel settings"

Different launchers ?

I have been testing out a few launchers such as next 3d go and nova and not really sure why people use these? The changes are minimal such as desktop transition and that's about it? I know you can use icon packs which is nice.
What do you see in your launcher ? I am most likely going to.buy Go or next 3d but not sure which. It seems some lag depending on which launcher I use.

nice iconpack, what is that.
Haven't used stock in probably 2 years. Nova has features not found anywhere in Stock launcher.
Dock as overlay, widget resizing (AND overlapping), app drawer customization, icon resizing, multiple/scrollable dock rows.....resize page grids...
The list is exhaustive. It's not really even comparable to stock.

I used Go Launcher prior to the release of Jelly Bean. After that, it seemed the Go Team had really fallen behind the times on what Android is capable of.
I've experimented with Next 3D on occasion. I love the effects, transitions, etc. But I've never felt I had more actual functionality than when I run Nova (or Apex for that matter).
I personally use the paid version of Nova (Prime). First and foremost to support the app developer, but you also receive about twice as more usable features on Nova Prime. Desktop backup is a great example! For those of us who flash ROMs a lot, this is an awesome feature.
Launchers are always about preference and how you use your phone. I saw a thread on here about people emailing each other Go Launcher Beta 5.0 invites. My personal thought was.... "really.. Go launcher... On Kit Kat!? That's just stupid...." LOL.
But again, some people love it and swear by it, just like I do with Nova Prime. I think every launcher brings it's own unique thing to Android...

I use aviate now cause it's so basic and simple. I've used nova and apex and thought like you. They barely changed anything.
Quantum matrix is a fun launcher. Probably the only true 3d one. All your apps are in the cube. Apps on corners are shown on all sides. You can have folders with more cubes in them. Was a fun launcher. But i like playing around with new stuff.
Went to TSF and I loved that. Literally performs like a pc desktop in that no more grid pattern. Place stuff where you want even on top of each other. Doesn't matter. No form you must stick to. Was so much fun. Even can spin then slightly so icons are on an angle. So many little tweaks too. Very fun launcher but very costly.
Only reason I use aviate now is i wanted something really simple and plain and this works. Will change up in a few months probably when i want something new

I always end up back with Nova. It works so well, yet adds useful features at a reasonable pace. It's the best mix of functionality and freedom. Definitely buy Prime.
I think I've used all the rest, and they are fun. Themer is a nice novelty, TSR is great in a big phone, Next is slick with a ton of little touches, but Nova hits it right.

Nova prime hasn't been updated in almost a year play store says. Is this true ?

Nova just got updated last month, but they didn't really add much. It isn't the 'flashiest' of launchers but IMO it's definitely the smoothest and snappiest.

Nova Prime isn't the launcher. it's the unlock key for Nova premium features.

Why would it need to be updated? It's just an unlocker for Nova...

I think he just assumed it was a separate launcher app. Like Next and Next Lite.

I use NOVA Launcher prime it's the best for custom themes imo.

If you like touchwiz there are some launchers that have simple mods such as grid sizes and swipe up for google now and such I like nova as well but sonetimes I go back to touchwiz

Touchwiz v nova or Google now or any other third party launcher

Do you guys notice any performance changes or battery changes when using a launcher other than touchwiz on this phone? On every phone I had included note 4 I never used touchwiz causw it was crap but on this phone I've been using it and it seems okay. What do you think?

Always used Nova as stock screen sizing wasn't enough for me to have what I want on it.

I want to use Nova too but I love the stock clock/Weather widget. If I could use that with Nova then I would be on it straight away lol

Weather time line is a pretty good replacement weather widget for the stock one, looks really nice and you can customise it a lot
Also is this the stock weather widget? Top one is weather timeline

Yeah that's the stock weather widget mate. I can't seem to get it with the clock together like the 5x1 widget

Do you mean you can't get that widget that I have when you're on nova? How do you feel about that weather timeline, I really like it. It has a lot of material design built into it and it's easy on the battery
BTW there's a lot more widgets than just the card one I've shown you, you can change the icons for the weather etc

No mate. I want the stock clock/Weather widget 5x1 like in stock but to use in Nova. The closest I saw was xwidget but it's not the same lol

always used Nova Launcher with my android phones. Can't beat the gesture features! Battery usage seems the same..battery report doesn't high usage.
Well, it would be nice if you guyz would really look at Nova Launcher battery drain stats.
With System Monitor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.systemmonitor.lite and various launchers I have compared them with TW. With no widgets, Nova launcher drains battery at a rate of 1-1.5% per 30-60 mins and for 6 hours of off time (sleep) I get 87-93% deep sleep. While TW is the lowest at 0.5-0.7% per 60 mins and 6 hours of off time -> 94-98% deep sleep.
This was obvious when I noticed 20-30% less battery mid-day using Nova.
I now use Action Launcher 3 and it's very close to TW.
