Will PRL Update Break Hotspot? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

My phone's LTE service has recently become more spotty and my hotspot hasn't been working as good. I could be getting throttled I guess but I don't think so because when I find a good service area and run a speedtest I get about 10mbps down. When I'm at home I have started to only get 1 bar of LTE and my speedtests have been around 2mbps down. I haven't updated my phone in quite some time because I don't want to break the hotspot. I am running software version PD3.
If I were to do a PRL update would that break the hotspot?

No, but a profile update will. And beware, Sprint will occasionally push a profile update without you initiating it, which will break hotspot too. No rhyme or reason to when/why they push profile updates. It has happened to me more than once though.

I'm on PB5,
I was having similar issues,
I emabled the disabled apps in package disabler pro,
Ran the prl update,
Cancelled/refused the firmware update,
Re-disabled package disable apps.
Good to go....
Updated prl,
hotspot still good.

You can update beyond pb5 and still have hotspot. Isn't pb5 still mm? I think you can root nougat too. Unless you keep it for xposed

hotspot disabled after OTA 1.32.651.6

it appears the ota did more than just fix the sdcard issue, it also locks down the internet sharing/hotspot. i have a friend who has not applied the update and he can enable his hotspot but i cannot and i did apply the update...
still trying to find out more scenarios of this
The free 30 days of hotspot was for 4G only, it shouldn't work on 3G.

This is false, as I was using the hotspot application in Minneapolis, which has no 4G.
Mine would only do 4g tethering even before I applied the update. When I tried 3g I got some kind of error.

That 4G part is what I read from Engadget quoting Sprint. Of course they also said that they wouldn't be able to bill hotstpot in the first month either so maybe Sprint decided to get to work.
Here is a very very simple solution I found.
1) Download the "unrevoked" root apk (it's like a service, you have to run it again after rebooting) from http://www.unrevoked.com
2) Download the latest wireless tethering apk from http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
3) Install the "unrevoked" root apk, start it up.
4) Install and start and configure the wireless tethering app as you normally would.
5) PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999!!
P.S. It works even after the OTA update and if you're 3G or 4G (but, better speeds on 4G)

4G, but only getting 3G when tethered?

I get 4G in Chicago and usually pull high 4s. When I tether to my laptop and test from the laptop, I only get 1 - 1.3 Megs. Can anyone explain this? Thanks in advance?
software bottleneck? maybe app has a transfer data broadband limit... when in tether... phone stays connected to 4% o switches to 3G?
Live long and prosper- tapatalk
There are other threads about this, can't tether 4g, it uses mac address to authenticate, it will bump you to 3g when you tether.might say 4g in rare cases but its 3g

It will depend on how you're tethering. Are you using the built in usb tethering or hotspot? If you are, are you paying for it or using calkulin's fix?
With the native tethering and Calkulin's fix, you won't be able to authenticate for 4g yet, so it will drop back to 3g. When it does, your 4g signal bars will disappear and the 3g icon will reappear. Your 4g radio will go into a bit of a fit and continue scanning and attempting to connect until you turn it off.
If you are using a third party app like Easy Tether, Wireless Tether, PDA Net, Tether, or Barnacle Tether, and your 4g status icon stays up, you are still on 4g, just without a good signal or there is excessive traffic as mentioned earlier.
You can check your actual signal strength buy opening the phone, dialing ##debug# and picking Wimax Engineering from the menu. It will show Rx Pwr, that is your actual signal in db
wait so its impossible to tether at 4g speeds?

You can, I do it every day. Use a market app and you're good to go. I get about 3.5 mbs average were I work. But ony 1.5 mbs at home cause my signal is poop.

not if you're doing it in a way Sprint considers valid. I pay for the tethering plan and use the phone's built-in features, and tether at 4g all the time.

wireless teether app? The app doesn't seem to work well on 4g. Tried on fresh evo, evio, and some others. The speed just drops to 10-20kb/sec. But with speedtest app on the phone, 4g reaches like 9mb/sec
I've never had that problem. I usually use Easy Tether though, no problems with speed at all. In fact, in back to back speed test ran on my phone first, then on my tethered laptop, the laptop always tests a littler faster.
Hey... This thing makes phone calls too!
I need to use wifi tether then, always used usb and couldnt get 4g to work correctly
This has been an ongoing issue for 'most' people. Some ppl somehow manage to tether at full 4g speed somehow, but myself and most others have tried many different fixes and apps and still only get 1.5-2.5mbit tethering off the 4G (not kickback to 3G) even though we get much faster on the phone. Example, I can get 16mbit on my 4g running speed test.net on my phone, then switch to wifi tether and immediately run speed tests and get no better than 2mbit. I originally thought it was a problem with the WIFI Tether app, but other apps do it too.. I think it may be something with the phones hardware, who knows. ****ty though, I am glad Im not paying for a tether package from Sprint or I would be REALLY pissed.

Cannot recieve any updates

First, do you have to be on 3g to update PRL or Profile?
Second, I have not been able to update my PRL or Profile since I first switched to a EE03 beta rom, I tried MANY other roms since, I even tried ODINing back to stock EC05 like it was when I first bought it and I get nothing. The only thing I ever get is... could not be updated at this time "Unknown Error."
The one fix that involes changing the OMA DM settings did nothing for me and I couldnt really find anything else that would be helpful to me.
This is really frustrating and I do not want to take my phone back to sprint to have them give me a refurb as a replacement. Anyone have any ideas?
bump, anyone got any ideas?
Try to odin back from stock again and you have to unroot before you can get the updates.
You should be able to update prl on any rom... I had the same issue, odin back to stock tried to update prl again it still didn't work so I brought it back to sprint... it failed some test they gave it, and then I got a refurb 2 days later

I wouldn't worry about it. Call it a blessing...load 11114 manually and enjoy being stuck on that PRL. It's a good thing.

Updating the Profile updates the handshaking between your phone and Sprint. If you have no trouble making phone calls you are good. But if you can't update anything it is something programmed incorrectly on your phone. Take it to Sprint.

It uses the same data path as the PRL updates do...ever notice how the 3G or 1X icon disappear when doing a PRL or profile update? It commissions the data on the phone, sets up the AAA key, etc so your phone can connect to 3G and 1X data. If your data is already working then don't worry about it, contrary to belief Profile Updates will not make your internet speeds faster.
How do you run 11114 Manually?

[Q/Help Req] 08/19/11 PRL Update Error

Since around 5PM yesterday 8/18/2011 I have been unable to update my PRL or Profile. Attempts return Error:Unknown
I am running ODIN EG22 w/root and no other mods or themes.
Have tried using terminal emulator
Code:
SU
PM disable com.samsung
Reboot
SU
PM enable com.samsung
Reboot
But have had no luck. Was previously able to update PRL with current set up and have been unable to find solutions searching.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
First of all don't worry about Update Profile if your data is already working. Your AA key, etc is already setup.
Load PRL 11115 and enjoy 3g roaming. Enjoy your phone being stuck on such a great PRL. I know I hate when my phone updates the PRL on its own.
Fixing this issue is kinda like your work truck is supposed to only go 70mph and no more. Do you really want to fix the issue that your work truck can go 75mph?

Nice Digi, nice!
So I just got off the phone with a Sprint CSR who had me jump through hoops and somehow we went back in time, I am now on 60678. WTH?? I'm going to look at how to update the PRL manually here , are these the most current instructions or are there newer methods out there? Also, where can I D/L that 11115 PRL or the latest 6068X?

The How To Load PRL thread has the 11115 PRL. If you can't find the page it is on click the little paper clip on the thread title list next to it. It will show you all the attachments in the thread.

[Q] Any tips to improve connectivity?

Even on MJ7, my Wifi and LTE connections are unreliable. This is really my only issue with this phone now, and it is very frustrating. I'm showing a pretty consistent 3 bars/-95 dBm, and though calls and texts work great, I get awful data performance. I never had this issue with my last phone on Verizon (Galaxy Nexus). On the wifi front, it just randomly dies, even just a few feet from the router. I'm not convinced that a replacement phone is going to help matters...
Any ideas? I'm about to the point of ditching this phone for a different model...
same thing here. WiFi sucks, even with a strong signal I.e. in the same room as the router. I'm not noticing it as much on LTE, but then again I'm not using that as much anyways. Even as I am making this post, the "WiFi connection is unstable" just popped up, with a full signal showing on WiFi.
I also have same problem. Wifi unstable issue happens when my note 3 have no reception. Some post says delete cache from recovery but didn't helped for me. Some post says if you have adaway then you will have similar problem. Also turning off Auto network switch option from Wifi Advenced option will help too.
But none of above worked for me

The culprit for me was AdblockPlus. After uninstalling, all "Internet connection is unstable" messages went away. I am now using Adaway with no problems.
On a hardware level, the best i can think of is to add one of those sticky antenna boosters on back of battery cover but didn't try it yet
On a software level, i imagine that there must be some android equivalent to increase the tx power of the antenna, but not sure how
Hopefully someone can chime in with something concrete since many of us are having weak data coverage in major cities
This might be a contributing factor to our slow LTE speeds: Verizon's CFO admitted that VZW's LTE network in big cities is "strained". I guess the good news is that it should get better by 2015...
Certainly if you're not in a large city this may not apply to you. I'm in San Francisco most of the day and I can confirm that LTE speeds here are ridiculously low, even with a strong connection I am lucky to get 6-7 mbps download and around 500 kbps upload.
I went to the Verizon store last night, and the guy said to call 611 and report the LTE issue. I'll try that today.
The Wifi issue is super frustrating. I'll be in the middle of the most mundane things, and the connection just drops, making me wait a minute or so while it reconnects.

I'm not even in a major city. I'm getting speeds like 0.10 mbps where I work, completely awful. I'm leaving Verizon altogether if they can't do better than that. I know that this spot is not the norm, but it's my workplace. If I need it to work reliably somewhere, it's here.
MJ7 seems to have given me poor connection all the way around. Why verizon put on "improved connectivity" on their OTA is beyond me. Its worse if anything. Most of the time in my workplace I cant even update an app because the DL time is like 10 minutes for a 3mb app. Thats with 3 bars on 3g. Forget about a 4g connection in this building. However...my coworker on ATT has strong 4g even in this building.
Wifi is crap. It will be full connectivity and the in/out arrows lit....STILL freezes on loading pages and stuff. It would appear I have a strong fully connected working wifi signal but it just hangs there and pauses for like 1-2 minutes before even loading a webpage sometimes. Its becoming an extremely frequent event actually. Starting to really bother me. I never had any of those issues on MI9. These folks need to stop worrying about trying to patch up root with updates and causing other problems. Especially since the vast majority of users on their network are NOT rooted.
people dont root to steal from vzw anyway...or take advantage of services most of the time its just to customize their phone...and delete bloatware.
I dont see why they have such an agenda against root. Stupid.
Called Verizon, and they "reset my connection," and asked me to reboot. No change. The guy said the next step is a replacement phone. I doubt it will help, but I suppose if that's what they wanna do, I'll do it :/ I'll keep requesting replacements until they find a real solution...
EDIT: Called again. They put in a "trouble ticket" for the area. Let's see if it helps!
Was on MI9 stock rooted. I ODIN'd the MJ7 modem this morning cuz I couldn't stand my WiFi dropping off any time it wanted. Since then, my WiFi has been pretty stable. No complaints on LTE since I only tried this on a flashed phone (ie no LTE in the first place).
I spoke too soon. WiFi is still dropping off frequently.

For those with LTE issues you might try turning on airplane mode to shut off all of your radios and then turn off airplane mode. I have had to do this many times on my Razr Maxx to reset the 4g radios when it gets stuck on 3g.
Things I've done to try to fix my WiFi disconnect issues:
1) Turn off WiFi power save feature via service menu.
2) Wiped cache and Dalvik cache.
3) Upgrade radio to MJ7 (ROM is Hyperdrive based on MJ7).
4) Changed from DHCP to static IP (as suggested by Samsung via online chat).
5) Turn off Auto network switch.
My very last option...which I've already done...contact Samsung for repair. I'm shipping it back for service.
Now I just need to find a fully stock ROM to ODIN first before shipping.
