[Bounty - 25€] Disable fingerprint scanner when in pocket - HTC U11 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi!
Since I`ve had it with HTC FP scanner, I`m willing to pay/donate/whatever 25€ for feature, that effectivley makes FP "DEAD" when in pocket (like gestures or edge sense).
FP has to be totally dead, it cannot wake the screen and it must not unlock the phone when correct finger is approached IF proximity sensor is blocked (in pocket or covered with finger).
Problematic screenshot: https://dl.xda-developers.com/4/2/3....png?key=TE1t1Ck2PtXFwA8Ih4py2Q&ts=1502032478
It can be:
* app
* kernel option
* you tell me
It has to be available to all, users and developers to use it as they wish in their roms or kernels.
Since we have many great devs that work their asses off for us, I`m willing to pay for this feature and hope that it can be done in a way, that we can all use it.
BTW, if someone else is willing to chip in, be my guest, I will add you to the list
Thanks!

I hope too that this gets some solution.
As far as I've dug into this whole topic, the sensor connections are now a big portion managed by nanohub firmware applications that are not part of the kernel code anymore.
Google replaced sensorhub with nanohub. It looks like it became very hard to get proper sensor states or hooks since this.
Same applies here as it seems to me. The proximity results are not channeled through CPU running kernel code.
I'm still looking at this, but even in the nanohub driver this didn't appear as processed data, looks like the different conditions are connected outside the kernel code.
While squeeze driver and touchscreen are also working correctly when pocket mode is detected, but this happens without the old ways kernel was doing a few years back.
I've checked the staging/nanohub and proximity drivers so far on kernel side, for a pointer.

You can disable "tap fingerprint scanner to wake phone" in settings. I was having a problem with it doing all kinds of stuff in my pocket till I disabled that. And I can still use fingerprint scanner to wake phone as long as I use the finger that I have scanned. Only that print will wake phone or screen.

Yes I know.
I`m using this right now.
But it still reacts on wrong finger or clothes, see screenshot, wakelocks are still there.

How??
What kind of clothes are you wearing that it triggers the FP scanner?
Or are you all day walking with your hands I in the pockets... Go work.. [emoji23] [emoji6]

I really don`t know why HTC devs made it like this so that you can unlock phone in pocket, it really doesn`t make any sense.

Proximity Sensor

Is there an app which toggles proximity sensor to turn on/off the screen?
I'm currently using a book case cover and wanted my tab to have an option so that when I open the case, it'll automatically turn the screen on, and when I'm done, I could just simply close the cover and the screen will shut off, it'bb be useful for thos who loves sending SMS and have to manually trun on the screen (although it will be ON when you received the message) and turn it off once you're done texting (I know the screen will turn off after a few seconds or so)
Thanks

just saw a app doing this job weeks ago, in the android app section, but forgot the name, so i think it can be done

Like the last poster, I saw a similar app in a blog last week. I think it was either Gizmodo, Lifehacker, or Engadget.
Anyway, dunno what it was called, but a quick google search yielded this: link
EDIT: Found it! Here you'l definitely find what you're looking for, if I understood correctly.

This is awesome. Thanks!
I gave Smart Screen Off a try and while it's promising, it's just too darn sensitive. The slightest shadow from your hand will turn the screen off. Needs more work IMO.

The market says this is not compatible with my Samsung 7.7. Maybe it works but not on this device.

It works fine for me.
Didn't works with book cover...
To fix this, I patch the cover with a little bit self adhesive in the sensors area

Research 'build.prop' and [your device]. You can probably fool the market into thinking it should in reality work. Or it could be that your build.prop has a mistake in it.
Or, if it's free software, download it to your PC and install it manually.
Google 'how to install apk android', if you don't know how to do this.
I'm interested in a reverse app, a one which turns the display on when you cover the proximity sensor. What use does such an app have?
On the Nokia N900 there was an app called Proximity Clock, you'd turn it on at night, lay the phone by your bed, switct the screen off. Then when you wake up, just put your hand over the phone, not searching for the phone's power button or anything, and it would bring up the display and show you a fluorescent night clock. Then after a configurable delay, the screen would go off again. Ingenious.
Anyone know of such an app for Android?

This made me lol. This post could've ended here and would have made my day.
Wow. That sounds absolutely absurd. With this my phone could always be on and consuming precious battery when I don't need it to be, in my pocket for example (jk, I get it).
Sorry to say, I haven't.
The point is, you turn this functionality on for the night. That way you don'tmhave to struggle to turn the phone on to see what time it is, if you wake up mid-night...
You don't have it (the phone) wake up during the day when it's in your pocket.

Yeah, like I said... I get it. But I really have never had a problem finding the power button on my phone (or any of my past phones), even in the dark. Hell, I can press it while it's in my pocket and I'm riding a bicycle. I guess it's a super-power that I've been blessed with.
I also have a clock radio that has an LCD display, which is easy to see in the dark.
I was just pointing out that this functionality is a bit of a uni-tasker, and probably lacks mass appeal, if I am indeed in the majority.
Hahahah... Congrats on the Super Power )
Anyhow, I wake up quite often in the night before meetings and stuff, and wanna quickly check the time, and as you're sleepy, the phone slips and what have you.
So that app for me, though it sounds corny, was the most beloved app on the phone, I really found it Super useful. I'd like to have it back...
In fact there is one nice application. It's called smart screen off. There is a lite and a pro version. What it basically does is turns off the display off when the proximity sensor is covered and turns on when the sensor is not covered. Well work great with your book case.

I think the OP got that suggestion already...
drawbacks - consumes more power LOL, nevertheless, I love it
I even suggested it to a bookcase seller
OT, but a follow up to my question, I'm currently testing ProximityScreenOff, which does turn the screen off an on based on the proximity sensor, even unlocks the device whi9h is key ifmyou wanna see other clock than the one on the lockscreen.

Prevent pocket wake ups, why is that not included

hi, i just noticed on stock rom i can unlock the phone and all even if i have the phone in my pocket.. the screen turns on and all that is really bad..... i always had phone who dont wake up if its in your pocket (when the proxi sensor is covered) guess i really need a custom rom to use this phone cause i dont wanna pocket call people...

Gravity Screen - On/Off
From the play store... It turns off the screen when it's in your pocket...
doesn't that eat battery? cause it keeps using the proximity sensor? and sucks that essential does not have it i mean sure full Android is pretty naked...
Yeah it's one of the issues I've noted -- if I have it in my running pouch when I go to take it out it'll say the fingerprint sensor has had too many tries -- but the prox sensor was covered the entire time, so why did the phone LOOK AT the fingerprint sensor even if it detected contact? It shouldn't, since logically both should never be in contact with something at the same time, UNLESS the phone is in your pocket!

Fingerprint Sensor Glitch

Currently testing on Tmo 6T - I am able to unlock my device with my middle finger knuckle -
This works 6 out of 10 times. I was also able to unlock using my daughter's knuckle. Has anyone else tested/experienced this. I saw that some other people have been able to unlock using fingers that arent registered by using just the edges.
I do not have smart / face unlock enabled. Nor my knuckles registered

Using my right hand, my middle finger knuckle works best to do this, I place at the top of the with a slight left right motion with it's lighting up.
My knuckle isn't working on my phone
Correction, its not the knuckle, the correct term is the proximal phalangeal Joint. The main bend in your finger. That portion unlocks my phone. I tried on my sisters device same thing. This is done using the skin portion, not the underside of the hand
https://www.onehealth.co.uk/orthopaedics-procedures-proximal-phalangel-joint-pip
Still not working here.
Bit annoying to test because of the awesome face unlock ?
But try to delete an retrain your fingerprints. Maybe you have a simple bug here
Only my fingerprints unlock my phone.
OP, check to make sure Google Smart Lock is not enabled. This is often the reason for cases like this so I'm guessing that's why you're able to bypass the security as well.
Discussion about this bug is going on for some days now over at Oneplus Community:
https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/fingerprint-massive-bug-other-people-can-unlock-the-phone.941931/
Only a few have yet encountered this issues, me counting
Doesn't work for me
I would guess that it's not a sensor problem but a problem/bug within the algorithm. Either this happens when enrolling the print or when the algorithm is trying to improve/learn reading your print. Maybe there is one point where the accepted pattern gets too vage, thus allowing even non-finger parts of the body as well as different prints?

have you had problems with your fingerprint sensor?

I have a Zenfone max Pro m1 (6gb ram).it's not rooted.
My fingerprint sensor mostly Works when my finger is slightly wet or should I say has some moisture. If it's dry( no sweat nothing ) it mostly doesn't work.
Also enabling camera2api makes it worse ( don't tell me it can't affect it blah blah)
Anyone else faces issues like these??? Or was my product just faulty
Any help would be greatly appreciated

It's not relevant to Camera HAL3.
Anyway, I have the similar issues and Camera HAL3 is enabled on my device. Fingerprint sensitivity is very poor from the beginning. Works well sometimes if we update or reset. But, over a period of time, the same issue appears again.
i have same problem and faces from startup
I don't have any problem with fingerprint sensor!!
It's works blazingly fast!!
I faced this problem as well but it didn't start the same way.
Its happened to me 3-4 times but every time it happened because of problems in flashing a rom.
When there were problems in flashing a rom my phone would become slow in openung apps and ram management would become **** and i would also have the fingerprint problem that you've described.
But it all goes away when i reflash the rom.

To those of you who are facing fingerprint lags, just add your finger as much as you can, I've registered my two index fingers twice.
Add them in different positions like when you are holding the phone by one hand and.... you get it right.
Just register the same finger twice from angles which you use the phone regularly.
Also when you are in the screen which allows you to add more fingers or to delete the existing ones(fingerprint settings), if you use the fingerprint sensor with a registered finger, it'll point out the one which is registered (dunno how to explain more, just check you'll get it).
This can help you understand how precise is the recording and which angles are best.

If not you could try updating manually.
Or you could revert to an older firmware and then try updating manually.

I also had this problem that fingerprint sensor needs to press harder than previously over the time but there is solution which works always.. Restart device by pressing and holding power button (not by reboot or shutdown option in menu) and if u want u can also remove previous fp and register new one neatly...

Man your trick is awesome now fingerprint sensor respond like DC comic flash.?
I bought Asus Zenfone max Pro m1 from flipkart recently, I faced same issue after enabling hal3 and Google camera mod.
I had to press the finger print sensor so hard, which made it almost unusable. I tried deleting and adding finger prints. I thought this to be a hardware fault.
Flipkart offers complete mobile protection for ₹99, so I sent this mobile back to flipkart. They replaced the sensor, and also reset the phone.
Now everything works butter smooth. I'm afraid installing Google camera again would create this problem again.

fingerprint scanner works about 1 of every 5 times

Anyone else with a similar experience? That's going to make me turn it off... Or am I just doing something wrong?
The sensor isn't as big as the interface leads you to believe, try registering multiple fingerprints using the same finger. Make sure your getting the edges of your finger print too.
I'm getting it every time. Make sure you get every bit of what you'd hit the sensor with.

I'm struggling with mine too. I've done my prints a couple times and I still keep getting press harder or couldn't read. Idk if the manufacturing of these could be hit or miss.
cant even reg my thumb, not sure if my skin is too dry, my hands are a mess. back to face recog.
I took the advice and did my prints again.. (3rd time) I scanned them more to the way I angle my thumbs and fingers. I was more thorough with the scan and it's reading my prints more consistently. Thank goodness!

I clearly face the same problem,
The captor is not verry accurate ... I'm a bit disapointed about it tbh. It was 50% of the reason why I changed, so I can use fp to unlock my phone again (at the back, next to cam is definitely not a good solution)

I'm having issues myself 1 out of 7 times, that update hasn't shown up for me, unlocked s10+
I actually followed the video on phonescoop.com about not following the instructions, as they are slightly misleading. It works better, but in general, I don't normally use screen protectors and I can definitely tell a difference, just using the phone. Also, make sure you have Touch Sensitivity turned on in display settings, which is supposed to increase the sensitivity with a screen protector.
Anyone try to use the fingerprint reader while it's plugged in and charging? Work ok?
I struggled at first. I went to software updates hoping to find one. Sure enough an update was there after I promoted it to search. It was better but still not 100%. Today however, I just realized it's been 100%. I attribute utter to me learning how to place my finger accurately. I think that's the biggest issue now. Is you need to just learn how it works.
Does anyone have an issue as the one in the screenshot
Like when trying to unlock using fingerprint we have the thumb impression over the ripple effect

Having no issues. Just did it.
Mine has failed to unlock with fingerprint a total of 1 time since I got it. Make sure to add the finger you plan on using twice and in the way that you will be comfortably using it usually. Also make sure to move your finger around when saving it, try to catch all the edges.

oh cool thanks for the info =)
The update I received yesterday was completely separate from the usual software update. It was a notification for update to just the biometrics after that it worked a lot better.
THere's something that you can do to make a massive improvement, after you get the software update that improves the fingerprint scanner. It worked for me.
Delete your fingerprints. Reboot into recovery, and delete the cache partition.
Then go back and add your fingerpritns again. Do it twice. Add two fingerprint profiles using the same finger.
For me, this changed it from being slow, and difficult to scan, to instant, and only needing to press my thumb very lightly.
