Proximity Sensor - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Is there an app which toggles proximity sensor to turn on/off the screen?
I'm currently using a book case cover and wanted my tab to have an option so that when I open the case, it'll automatically turn the screen on, and when I'm done, I could just simply close the cover and the screen will shut off, it'bb be useful for thos who loves sending SMS and have to manually trun on the screen (although it will be ON when you received the message) and turn it off once you're done texting (I know the screen will turn off after a few seconds or so)
Thanks

just saw a app doing this job weeks ago, in the android app section, but forgot the name, so i think it can be done

Like the last poster, I saw a similar app in a blog last week. I think it was either Gizmodo, Lifehacker, or Engadget.
Anyway, dunno what it was called, but a quick google search yielded this: link
EDIT: Found it! Here you'l definitely find what you're looking for, if I understood correctly.

This is awesome. Thanks!

I gave Smart Screen Off a try and while it's promising, it's just too darn sensitive. The slightest shadow from your hand will turn the screen off. Needs more work IMO.

The market says this is not compatible with my Samsung 7.7. Maybe it works but not on this device.

It works flawlessly

It works fine for me.

Didn't works with book cover...
To fix this, I patch the cover with a little bit self adhesive in the sensors area

Research 'build.prop' and [your device]. You can probably fool the market into thinking it should in reality work. Or it could be that your build.prop has a mistake in it.
Or, if it's free software, download it to your PC and install it manually.
Google 'how to install apk android', if you don't know how to do this.

I'm interested in a reverse app, a one which turns the display on when you cover the proximity sensor. What use does such an app have?
On the Nokia N900 there was an app called Proximity Clock, you'd turn it on at night, lay the phone by your bed, switct the screen off. Then when you wake up, just put your hand over the phone, not searching for the phone's power button or anything, and it would bring up the display and show you a fluorescent night clock. Then after a configurable delay, the screen would go off again. Ingenious.
Anyone know of such an app for Android?

This made me lol. This post could've ended here and would have made my day.
Wow. That sounds absolutely absurd. With this my phone could always be on and consuming precious battery when I don't need it to be, in my pocket for example (jk, I get it).
Sorry to say, I haven't.

The point is, you turn this functionality on for the night. That way you don'tmhave to struggle to turn the phone on to see what time it is, if you wake up mid-night...
You don't have it (the phone) wake up during the day when it's in your pocket.

Yeah, like I said... I get it. But I really have never had a problem finding the power button on my phone (or any of my past phones), even in the dark. Hell, I can press it while it's in my pocket and I'm riding a bicycle. I guess it's a super-power that I've been blessed with.
I also have a clock radio that has an LCD display, which is easy to see in the dark.
I was just pointing out that this functionality is a bit of a uni-tasker, and probably lacks mass appeal, if I am indeed in the majority.

Hahahah... Congrats on the Super Power )
Anyhow, I wake up quite often in the night before meetings and stuff, and wanna quickly check the time, and as you're sleepy, the phone slips and what have you.
So that app for me, though it sounds corny, was the most beloved app on the phone, I really found it Super useful. I'd like to have it back...

In fact there is one nice application. It's called smart screen off. There is a lite and a pro version. What it basically does is turns off the display off when the proximity sensor is covered and turns on when the sensor is not covered. Well work great with your book case.

I even suggested it to a bookcase seller

OT, but a follow up to my question, I'm currently testing ProximityScreenOff, which does turn the screen off an on based on the proximity sensor, even unlocks the device whi9h is key ifmyou wanna see other clock than the one on the lockscreen.

Just confirmed this issue on my Omnia7.
This is retarded. Capacitive screens don't work that way.
not having any problem on my omnia 7...tried everything to try emulate some of the effects reported! not seeing any deterioration in sensitivity!
Not a pickle from my Omnia 7, Still as lush as ever and responsive as it should be, i've been mostly USING in on a pillow/soft surface when it's laying down next to me when i'm home and sitting here for hours on end.
Loving it even more when all these bugs/glitches come out and it's stomping them down.
I feel I should come back to this and apologise as I have found a pillow which messes up my phone's touch responsiveness too. Interesting.

What kind of pillow? This smells of static to me, seeing as capactive screens rely on the tiny electrical charges in your body. Polyester fabrics getsquite static, do they not?
It happens to me when I place it on my desk...

I believe the manual is a load of BS. My iPad works fine when connected to my powerpoint. I've noticed that when the Omnia is charging via powerpoint its screen sensitivity does go down, BUT, when you hold the phone with your other hand, or even just touch part of the rear/side with one finger, the screen starts working flawlessly.... imo it could be some design flaw regarding conductivity
When I place my Omnia 7 on my car phone holder (from Capdase), the screen does not respond at times, and I can't seem to find any pattern why or how this happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Once I take it off the phone holder, the screen is working fine again.
I wrote it in the other thread... but I had this problem too and after I flashed the newest firmware it was gone. Now the screen responds perfect no matter where I place the phone.
You should check the thread with omnia firmware out
Another solution I found is that you would need to Hard reset your device not through the settings but turning off and than press/hold volume down + camera and power on. Than press the middle button twice and than you will not have anymore problems with touch screen.

o really?! I thought it was just magic and the magic couldn't work when the phone was placed on soft things! im so glad someone with intelligence could teach me about this capacitive thingy whoever he is!
you have completely cleared this up for me - i now see the error of my ways. must have been having hallucinations or something. sorry for this disruption everybody!
i hope the next version of our phone uses magic because that would be really cool!
on a side note to that, after updating my firmware yesterday this dosnt seem to happen anymore. stupid hallucinations!
Had this before, after the firmware Upgrade the Problem seems to be resolved but after some time ( 1 week or so ) it's back again.
Looks like there is a fix for the laying-flat-issue for the Focus:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11077163#post11077163
Maybe it works for some issues with the Omnia 7 as well. Did anybody already try?
Yes, have the same. If I put it on my couch, or bed. Sometimes also on hard surfaces. Doesn't bother me too much though, but it is weird.
I'm not trying to toot my own horn here...but I was literally the first person (or one of them at least) on Microsoft answers, Youtube and forums alike to raise concern about this issue.
It's a conductivity problem. As long as one hand is touching the back of the phone (sometimes near the top or sides too) then the touch screen will operate normally.
The reason it stuffs up when you have it flat is because you're not touching the back of the device, hence the conductivity flaw.
Check all this, it's a problem with the Omnia 7's, deal with it or chose another handset. I ended up keeping mine, I can live with it.

[Q] Wonky Proximity Sensor?

Hey guys,
I've bought a slightly used myTouch 4G off of Craigslist to replace my Vibrant.
I've rooted and modded the MT4G and I'm currently running CM 7.2 RC0. I followed the step-by-step directions from the CM Wiki.
I've found what I think is a problematic proximity sensor reading. Every time I place or receive a phone call, the screen blanks out. The only way I've found to bring the device back, is to wait for the phone call to disconnect and then receive another incoming call. This _usually_ will reactivate the display. As long as I don't answer that phone call, the display will remain active.
I downloaded a proximity sensor app off of the market and according to the app the proximity sensor is engaged 100% of the time (which explains the behavior a little bit). But I don't know whether or not to trust this app.
I've tried tinkering with every proximity setting I can find, both in the phone's settings and in the extra settings that CM ships with.
Edit: I'm sorry for not mentioning it earlier, but I have done a bit of research on the proximity sensor. I don't think there's any kind of screen protector that might be obscuring the sensor.
What are the chances that the phone's proximity sensor is damaged? Is there any way to spoof that value and override what the sensor is repeating back to the OS?
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?
For what it's worth, here's some information from About Phone:
Android Version: 2.3.7
Baseband Version: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.14-cyanogenmod-g295e82f [email protected] #1
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RC0-glacier-KANG
Build Number: GWK74
Thanks in advance for taking a look
Are you using a case? My wife bought a cheap case that covered the prox sensor and it behaved exactly how you said.
Edit: I found an app in the market called Hardware Disabler. It scans your device for drivers and disables whatever you select. The problem is it only gives you the driver's name, not what it works for. If you can identify the driver (perhaps a knowledgable dev could help) you could kill that baby on startup.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Yeah, sorry I didn't mention it before. I've got nothing that I can think of that would be interfering with the proximity sensor on the front of the phone; no screen protector, no little case. Nothing at all.
Tonight I've been monkeying around with a few different things, just to see if I got better/different results:
Tried a couple of the different/newer radios from the radios post in the dev forum.
Wiped cache and Davlik partition
Reset phone back to factory defaults.
Flashed back to one of the T-Mobile Froyo ROMs.
None of these helped, but on a lark. I decided to go ahead and shine a big flash light at the phone while I was running the Proximity Sensor Finder application. If I shined the light directly on the proximity sensor, then the proximity sensor would intermittently blink on/off.
It doesn't really help me all that much, but it looks like I definitely have a flaky/bad proximity sensor.
In order to help people down the road who might have the same problem, here's some things I'm going to try:
Deny permissions to the device's file in the /dev directory
Try and use an app like Tasker to disable the sensor.
May flash MIUI, it sounds like it has an option to permanently disable the proximity sensor.
An app on the market called Proximity Screen Off
I'll keep the thread up-to-date with what I wound up doing. It's a bit of a bummer, I got this phone to last me until my contract expires with T-Mobile in a few months. But it was hopefully going to be a definite upgrade over the Vibrant. It's a little aggravating that I'm going to spend the next few months heating the side of my face when I'm on the phone and/or accidentally hanging up on people when on the phone
Last reply to my own thread, I promise. The MIUI's disable proximity sensor setting worked great, although I wasn't really crazy about the look & feel of MIUI (this isn't a dig on the ROM, just a personal preference).
We wound up using a Hex Editor to edit the file /system/lib/hw/sensors.glacier.so, we searched for "cm3602" (the proximity sensor) and changed it to "xxxxxx".
The one downside is the phone doesn't turn off when you hold it up to your face, but that's certainly better than a phone who's display likes to power off when placing/receiving phone calls.
Thanks for comments mines also have this issue too.

MyTouch 4G: Don't Stand So Close to Me
Just a quick update, I've been re-flashing different ROMs and had to re-make this change. Which helped me spot some typos in my blog post (woops) and I took the time to write something more close to step-by-step instructions. Hope this is more helpful:
http://blog.brianmoses.net/2012/01/mytouch-4g-dont-stand-so-close-to-me.html
Get ADB Functioning on your desktop computer.
Download and install a Hex Editor
Use ADB to pull down the file sensors.glacier.so (adb pull /system/lib/hw/sensors.glacier.so)
Open sensors.glacier.so in your Hex Editor
Search for the text "cm3602" (no double-quotes) and save your changes. Please note, case sensitivity is important. If you're paranoid, it's good to check that the file size is exactly the same as it was before your edit.
Re-mount the /System folder as read-write using an ADB Shell (mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system)
Open up a new command window and use ADB to push your edited file (adb push sensors.glacier.so /system/lib/hw/sensors.glacier.so)
Reboot your phone.
For whatever it's worth, I flashed my first ICS ROM a week or two ago. I totally forgot about my defective Proximity Sensor.
I thought people might like to know that the same steps I used to disable the proximity sensor previously still works in ICS.
thank you thank you thank you for this thread, i have the exact same problem i couldnt answer calls cause i use gv and i cant call where i have to press a number aftewards!
so glad it still works for ics. thank you again! posted this problem in a few forums no one could help

Thanks for this post. It has been a big help. I was having the same issues.
Did this work for anyone else? It did not for my phone. The phone goes black and can't access the dial pad.
I have the exact same problem after recently i replaced my broken digitizer touch screen & LCD.
I just realized that during the call , when the display goes totally black , if i push the UP-LEFT corner of the screen of my phone (just beside the proximity sensor) , the screen comes back again.
That's because the "adhesive" i used under the lcd screen , is more thicker than the original adhesive.
So the sensor is ok , the distant between the "touch & LCD " and the sensor is the problem.

[Q] Turn off faulty sensor?

Hi, just bought a cheap iconia a500 with a dent on one corner so obviously been dropped. It works fine however.
Only issue is one of the sensors seems faulty. I installed a custom rom and still same so not the rom at fault.
I only noticed it after installing words with friends. You can shake to shuffle tiles but mine just shuffles em continuously unless turned upside down. Not sure which sensor which sensor it is as rotate works fine.
I guess the drop caused it but is there a way of turning it off?
Anyone?
I can imagine it would have an impact on battery life also.

I posted it once before in the wrong section so posted it here. I would delete the other post if I had the option like other forums but alas I can't.
I can live with it actually especially at £40 and an answer to my question was all I wanted not an arsey comment dude.
No one told me it can't be switched off and I could find that answer nowhere after a long search of the forums, hence why I asked

[Q] Proximity Sensor Problems

My proximity sensor just suddenly started to half work. When on a phone call I would cover the sensor with my finger and the screen will shut off. When I move my finger away, the screen won't turn back on. I got into the test menu to test the sensor and notice that the adc reading seems to track my finger fine but once the sensor detect my finger it always stays at "1" (with a green vibrating screen) I am close to restoring my phone back to stock with Odin to see if it will fix it. But if anyone has any other suggestions it would be much appreciated. I have an i337m running stock rooted.

If you have AT&T, you can call their warranty center and they will send you out a refurbished phone. If you let them know that it's a brand new phone and you take care of your devices, and that you shouldn't be given a used phone after such a short period of time, they can also send you a brand new one. They'll include a pre-paid shipping label so you can return the old one once you've transferred everything to the new one.
Screen protectors and covers to close to the sensor would add craziness in the past.

I am in Canada, so I guess I will try to go back to them and see what they can do. After testing the sensor I found out a few things. The proximity sensor will work indoors but when I go out doors it doesn't anymore. With that said, when indoor lights are really bright, it also stops working.

In the past, having a case that was next to the proximity sensor was enough to illicit some odd behavior. If you have any kind of case with a lip, you should test without it on

I do have a case but it's the original Samsung protective cover case.
But have you tested the prox sensor without the case?
You have not confirmed that either way. If you want to exchange go ahead, but if it were me I would test everything I could first before I go to all the trouble of an exchange to find the problem persists.

Also, look into turning off the gesture and any in pocket detection to see if that makes a difference.

Hi, yes I did test without the case as well and all my gestures are off except smart stay (which I turned off to test as well) I actually went to a shop around here that had two live S4s on demo. I went into that test menu *#0*# and looked at their proximity adc values. Both display models were nearly identical in values.... (would start from 2 onward to 255 when fully covered) as mine idles at 46+ when not covered. To me, it just looks like my sensor lost its calibration, but I don't think there is a way to calibrate it. I looked through the build prop.. even tried this through the terminal :

Still no luck. I think I am going to reach out to Samsung as I found a walk in service depot near my area. This issue only really started the last few days...and it is driving me nuts

Thanks for confirming... I know these were simplistic suggestions, but some phones in the past had really touchy sensors if anything was even nearby. Hopefully you will have good luck at the service center. I didn't know Samsung even had walk in centers.

[Q](cm11) phone app freezes, screen becomes unresponsive

Hi all,
Im at a loss here, I dont know how to move forward with this problem so im asking for help lol XD.
I just gave my nexus 4 to my gf ( just got my opo last week). The phone was running cyanogen mod 11 ( some nightly version between m6 and m7).
So when my phone came in the mail, I dropped her sim in my nexus 4 (witch was working perfectly) and after making a phone call with it, she tells me she thinks the phone app is broken or something...
So I have a look at it and this is what its doing now. When I call someone, as soon as you click call the screen goes black. To bring back the screen you need to click twice on the sleep/wake button on the side ( kinda like if you were closing the phone and re-opening it) just for the screen to show again but none of the buttons work. Well none of the phone app buttons work, I can still click back/home/previous app buttons or slide down the top menu just fine. just cant click any of the number keys, hang up, hit speaker phone or anything related to the phone app. So in order to hang up I have to click home and then use the drop down menu and click hang up under the phone notification.
Before droping her sim card in the phone I did a standard wipe/factory reset on the phone just to give her a clean platform. So since that was already done I've tried updating to a stable ( M9 in this case) release, problem is still there, so I tried to wipe dalvik, cache and done a data wipe/factory reset from the CWM recovery and flashed a fresh cm 11 M9 with gapps and I still have the problem.
Im at a loss at where to begin looking for a fix for this situation, I've looked on the xda and cm forums and ran plenty of google searches for this problem but im coming up empty ...
any help would be greatly appreciated,
regards
Chris
Edit: omg screen protector was interfering with the proximity sensor... Is this a common problem with nexus 4 or could this provblem still be related to my hardware/software ?
(I've never used a screen protector before).

If the screen protector isn't applied carefully, it might interfere easily with the sensors. If you want to check, then download a sensor tester from the play store, and use it to see if the sensor is working without any protector over it.

haha thanks for your reply, I've been trying to solve this issue for a week, been looking on the cm nightly and stable forums and here on xda trough all the posts that sounded closely related to my problem and didn't find anything... as soon as I post a questions 3 minutes later I found the problem.
To test it, I simply peeled the screen protector off and held it there while I made a call and it worked perfectly !! Then I cut out the part that goes over the prox sensor and its perfect again ( looks like crap but works ). Still gonna download that sensor tester ( curiosity XD).
P.S: totally unrelated to this post, I've been reading some of your "how to" posts here on xda, just wanted to say thanks for all the info you have put out there XD.

Hehe No problem
This happened with my co-worker's Nexus 4 (which is now my Nexus 4). She had been complaining about this for like a month, until I actually saw her screen, and that the corner of her screen protector had flapped loose and had a bunch of crud built up underneath it. It was a forehead smacker for me when I realized how obvious the cause/solution was. Not so obvious when I took possession and replaced the screen and had the same problem.
