After updating to nougat my upper speaker start sounding really bad. It has a permanent rattle/buzz when the sound has mid frecuency that is very annoying. It is just a coincidence and my upper speaker just broke or it is software related? It let the phone unusable to play youtube videos with people talking at high volume as it sounds like s**it. Atached a video of the problem. Also, is it easy to replace the upper speaker?
The example is this video at 4:07

I will be really gratefull is someone with Nougat can help me with this. I am thinking on buying a speaker replacement and back cover adessive to fix the issue but i don't want to loss time and money to realize that the problem is software related!
Thanks a lot!

I have experienced this with all, but only, nougat ROMs. I believe it is software related. I think the gain is high to compensate for low volume in nougat. If you go back to stock does it still do this? Mine doesn't.

I meant going back to either stock and trying it. But specifically, for me, my region didn't have official stock nougat yet so personally trying it was done on official mm. What I meant was, custom nougat ROMs seem to be the issue. I can't confirm a non-issue with official nougat.

There isn't stock 7.0.1 - nowhere.
You can try to clean speakers with vacuum cleaner or compressed air very carefully.
I don't know how much loud it was - I heard something like a buzzing (resonance) sound in your mp4.zip.
If it is what you mean - rather speker/s is damaged, or its attachment.
You can also try twrp+root+viper4a to check it.
I had the same problem after updating to official 7.0

Allready try cleaning it with air, isorpopyl alcohol, etc.
In M.M i wasn't having that problem. Efectivily is like a mega saturation in the mid range especter, really anoying.
Thanks for the answers! So it seems like it is a Nougat Problem?

Just for the record, i installed dirty unicorns 11.7 (it's nougat) and my problem with the speakers on that is nonexistent. I wonder if it's only certain custom nougat ROMs sharing the same audio source?
I actually had this problem on MM. Did you try to remove the "effects" in the Equalizer? Also try to to suck the dirt with mouht (оtherwise will push the dust inside and will make it worst (and of course try with thin cotton and alcohol to cleen the grid carefully )).
My Pure has been doing that for as long as I can remember. I can press down on the center of the top speaker and it stops. I think, for me anyway, that the speaker is bad or the grill is loose.
I think mine started doing that with Nougat update but maybe i break de grill when cleaning it. Anyway it is not loose and i allready clean it with hair, isopropilic alcohol, also tried to aspire with mi mouth with no look . The sound eq is disabled and has no effect on the phone, it is disabled by motorola and there is no app that can change general sound seettings. So i am now more loose, don't know if changing the speaker will help or not .

Hello,
This is my first post so sorry if something is done wrong or whatever. Ive been having issues with my front speaker. I dont think i did anything to break it (i drink a lot though) but its been completely useless for the past week or two. I have the latest cm 10.2 and franco kernel nightlies. I thought updating them might help but it didnt. I also can no longer talk to people on speakerphone like i could before (while the speaker still didnt work). I also tried headphones and now they dont with either. Does anyone have any idea what it could be and/or different ways to fix the speaker?
Thanks in advanced!

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.
Here's the thread I started: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502265

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

FWIW, I haven't had this issue at all since the update came out months ago. Maybe they just haven't updated the demo model in the store.

All I did was accept the 12B update. 24A (Kit Kat) is rolling out now, I believe.
I'm sorry for bringing this from dead, but have you guys found any solution for this? Or it's not fixable once it occurs? charging + headphones +v4a developed this bug this evening on my g2.

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.
Hey guys, recently just picked up an S4 from a friend after my HTC One battery kicked it. I have a random problem with the phone that I'm hoping someone here can help with.
When using a stock or TouchWiz ROM, I have zero problems with both the top and bottom microphones. I can speak to people in calls or record voice using apps and it's loud and clear. When I install a Cyanogenmod of any version (I have tried 10, 11, 12, 12.1, and 13) the bottom mic drops it and becomes very muffled to the point where you can't hear anything on the other end or in a recording. Speaking in to the top mic works perfectly though. Bluetooth works fine too and I have no issue speaking to or using A2DP with it.
Has anyone seen this before, and if so, has anyone fixed this? I'd much rather use a Cyanogenmod ROM instead of TouchWiz but at the moment it seems I have no choice ...

Are you sure you don't got dust in the two holes? Sound to me you have to clean the two holes.
Nope, I had the phone apart and cleaned both holes, no difference.
The confusing part is that on a TouchWiz ROM the microphones work as they should. It's not until I'm running CM or AOSP that I get this problem.
It's almost as if the microphones have been switched and the top becomes the voice mic and the bottom becomes the noise cancelling one.

I've lost count of how many times I've pointed out this problem. No, changing gain value will not solve the problem. This has been a truly dealbreaker for me, as this affects every cm based rom. @AntaresOne said that this problem comes from using caf drivers and I think it cannot be fixed unless Samsung releases its own source codes.

It's not that hard to believe, seeing as there are over 40 different S4 models. You just can't make a rom to work perfectly on all.
I never had any major problems with any of the roms I flashed, yet other people seemed to have serious issues with the same rom.
I don't know why Samsung can't make just one model. It splits the user base, it gives them more headaches because of updates and such.

Yes, I agree on that. It's crazy to make that many models. I made the assumption that he has an i9505 but maybe he has a different model.
Try to record a voice message with Whatsapp using TW/GE rom and then with CM/AOSP rom, you will clearly hear the difference. jfltexx here.

Hi guys. Need your help. Ever since I updated to MM I keep randomly interrupted by crackling sounds during phone calls that last for 4-5 seconds than the sounds go away. I had the same issue on B560 but now that I updated to B565 I keep having the same problem . Tried to a hard reset but that changed nothing. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Haha... I'm pretty sure that no one is tapping me. I didn't do anything yet. I'm somewhat lazy these days and don't want to reinstall every app just to do a firmware change or downgrade. But the problem is most likely the firmware. It's not the speaker and it's not water damage. The issue occures only during calls(and even then not on all calls, about 70% of them) and only temporary, lasts 4 to 5 seconds and then I get maybe 3 minutes of talk time without any issues. Does the same on earpiece and speaker so I'm inclined to think that it's software issue. I've messed around a little bit with the firmwares both single and dual sim. I couldn't make MM install for some reason and I kept jumping from single to dual sim roms trying to fix the problem. Eventually I got it working on single sim B560 I think (my phone is single sim) but realized after a day that I had the sound issue. The next day I received the B565 OTA and I did the update but it didn't change anything . I'll try to change the baseband these days when I'll have a minute but it's somewhat of a hassle with the P8. I come from a Nexus 5 where changing roms was the norm and it took 30 seconds to do it without any hick ups. Now with the P8 a lot of the times I cross my fingers and hope for the best when changing firmwares. Anyway, I'll let you guys know how and if I manage to fix the issue
I have had my A2017U since October of 2016. The vibration was okay until B19 came out, then I started to notice this rattling noise accompanying every phone vibration. My phone has never fallen heavily or anything. Initially, I thought it was the build. From my observation, the vibration on B29 (the first Marshmallow build) is a lot softer than the Nougat and onwards builds, which is why I didn't notice it back then. So I'm guessing the motor might be a bit loose and the stronger vibration on the subsequent ROMS are triggering this loud noise?
If anyone has experienced this or knows how to fix it, please let me know, as it is quite annoying and I plan to trade it in and get another device next year. This problem could be a deal breaker and it renders the vibration almost unusable in quiet places; draws unnecessary attention.

That's normal, it happens once you crank the vibration force up. Shouldn't happen on stock ROMs but it does. I have that on Oreo even though i never had that problem on other builds. I suspect it's the bonding between the vibrator and the daughter board that's bad for some reason, though maybe it's just the vibrator itself

If anything, I recently downloaded the Vibration Tuner Xposed module to try to tone it down. The results are a bit so-so, and the rattling sneaks in every now and then. On Oreo, it doesn't even work. I'm guessing it has to do with the rw issue we're currently experiencing.

No connection whatsoever, rw is because it's a closed beta.
You'll have to find a custom kernel thay works with your ROM and tune it down from kernel adiutor
Thanks for the info. Do you know of any custom kernels for stock? I am yet to see one that works on stock ROMs. CAD, Llama, HellsGate all seem to work only on custom ROMs

BeastMode worked with U stock but it's not updated anymore. Worth a try anyways.
Otherwise just go custom or install one of the Oreo betas (i recommend B01 w/ hdr+ patch), because someone is gonna publish a kernel for it sometime soon
Yeah, the only thing keeping me away from custom Oreo is the dual-SIM bug, but a comment I just found on AEX suggests that it works on the latest build. I'm going to give it a whirl when I get home on Tuesday.

I meant Oreo betas as in B01, non custom, but yeah, AEX has dual sim since long ago anyways

I´ve got the same issue here with my A2017G running Nougat B12. It suddenly appeared. Phone has never been dropped or handled roughly. As far as I understand its an issue with a badly constructed or weak holder of the vibration motor. It rattled itself loose. On the upside it seems to disappear by itself as I am not encountering that issue any more.

Good for you, mine has been bugging me for months. I'm dreading having to open the phone to fix it; I might do that when I'm ready to sell.
fixed it
I found an easy fix for this
