TWRP on 5.0? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've rooted my device and unlocked the bootloader, but I'm still confused about flashing TWRP; which version do I use? And will I need to back up my data w/ Titanium Backup first? Finally, what's the best way to flash ROMs in general? I'm on Lollipop (5.0), and OF1.

Any of the 3.x...-4.4 series should work, but:
- AryaMod requires a 2.8.x series because of its use of the Aroma installer, see that thread for details
- Some "hlte" unified build ROMs that are compatible with the SM-N900V (hltevzw) won't install unless you use a hlte version of TWRP. (change the link above apropriately). Alternatively you can unzip the ROM file and delete the "assert" statement in the installer script, and rezip prior to installation. Pick your poison.
- Folks that are on really old bootloaders (e.g. MI9/MJ7/MJE) have to use the -4.3 variants because of differences in DTB hanlding.

What's a good lightweight, no bloat TW rom? I noticed Omega has a lot of additional features, which I would never use like the Xposed framework.
I was thinking of going with Goldeneye, but not sure if it has been updated to support I337M again.

same here ..
you should try xposed framework ,and wanam xposed .There a lot of xposed module and i can costumize touchwiz like i want, like maximize widget, wich allow me to click on a notification without having to unlock. For shure its a personnal choice.
But in omega you can choose the app that you want ,if you dont want xposed just unselect it ,it use aroma installer when you flash it,you can remove a lot of apps

Goldeneye never lost compatibility with our phones, so not sure what kind of support you expect or require.? IB4STiD simply requested not to complain from Canadian side for known problems, like lack of 4.3 modem for our phone, which we now got.
Simply flash Canadian compatible third party kernel, (one without knox) after flashing goldeneye, that's it.

It's in GE thread, first post, Canadian fix. Guess iB4STiD opened it up for us again.
But basically go to original development and whichever tw kernel you pick, follow the links to Canadian or T-Mobile compatible version. Kernel makers usually describe whether we have our own or we should use T-Mobile one

So, as I understand, we absolutely need this Advanced CWM recovery if we are running MK6.
We can't use standard CWM or TWRP recovery?

From what I gather, we can use CWM or TWRP, it just blows the Knox counter and warranty is void. Which is why cf-auto-root can still root, and why u can just throw rom manager on to install cwm (then remove, dont install roms with rom manager). This is only for MK6 (rogers/canadian). I would try a cwm or twrp, and just use cf-auto root to reinstall the stock recovery with odin if you run into problems.

This is only relevant for GE versions 13/14. The latest is GE15. As already explained, just follow steps in 1st post. There is a section called 'Canadian install guide', can't miss it. The fix you flash after the rom is the kernel for our baseband (Step A). Easy as pie. Step B is optional, changes network icons from default to whatever your carrier uses (e.g., 4G to LTE).
I would recommend creating a backup of stock once rooted before flashing custom roms. Not sure if there's ever going to be a fix for resetting knox, but traditionally it was a good idea to have this in case you ever want to revert back to stock and unroot. Also backup EFS to be safe, for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546. I personally had to use an app for that after updating, knox kept preventing me from connecting to the program but that was when OTA was launched, might work for you.

FYI I did it the easy way using the Cyanogen Installer.
Ended with CM10.2 and CWM 6.0.4.4.
Then I flashed CWM Touch 6.0.4.4 from CWM. Downloaded TWRP but did not try it.

Rom Toolbox Safestrap Compatible?

Is rom toolbox capatible with Verizon Gs5 SafeStrap. Is it even compatible with Verizon gs5? If it is, what type of recovery should I select in the options?
Anybody that has even tried?
What is your goal for using RT? You cant flash a custom recovery unless you have an unlocked bootloader Dev edition phone. If you try to flash a recovery on a locked phone you may brick it.

Yes, but it is not the same thing as simply installing a custom recovery on your phone. Just install Safestrap from the thread you referenced.

It depends on what your using rom toolbox for,if your trying to do anything that's recovery depend ( flash roms/zips or recoverys) don't use rom toolbox use ss but for anything else it should be fine at least I haven't had any issues with the s5 or other phones with locked bootloader (dx2 & d2g) but as with everything UEMV, backup ect. and I am not responsible....

New on Note3 verizon

Hi guys,
first of all sorry to bother you i know i have to read a lot before do anything to my phone just want to do some questions... I just had a chance to exchange my Nexus5 for a verizon Noter 3, but seems like everytime i change my android root gets more difficult and "divided" because all the models available...
w/e I hope you can answer my questions..:silly:.
1) since i have a 4.4.2 NC2 build Noter 3 Ic ant use the "universal root de la vega method" right? (unlook botloader etc) right????
2) i used towelroot method, but it worked and now i have root, but...
2.1 can i install a custom recovery with that root? ( i dont think so i dont have my botloader unlocked im a right??
2.2 since y dont have recovery if i **** things im ****ed right i cant install a rom or use or do a backup with this root without recovery, Right??
Thanks for your help!!!
UPDATE: what wait... this towelroot method.... did it unlocked my botloader also??? can i install that custom recovery ??
From what i know we don't have a custom recovery for the retail Verizon note 3. Developers Editions does though. We have safestrap which was made for our locked bootloader developed by Hashcode. Here's a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610. Make sure you read his instructions carefully. Here is a link to roms make sure its compatable with retail version (locked bootloader) http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-note-3#romList
Please hit thanks button if this help
Your note 3 is more likely retail edition unless you got development edition (twrp recovery in original android development section) and there is no recovery due locked bootloader except you can use safestrap recovery by hashcode thread in development section.
For root since your mentioned then you can just use towelroot for rooted your note 3.
For ROM you can install whatever you like choice as long as it states retail edition ROM.

Yes, you can backup or restore by the safestrap recovery. You will not have any problem with the backup and restore. I have done many times without any problem.

Ok, use TowelRoot.com to root the phone, and use TWRP manager to install TWRP on your device. After that check out the development section of this very forum and flash any ROM you wish. 4.2.2 or 4.4.4 or 5.0 or anywhere in between (Just read the thread and instructions first!!!). Whatever you do, never update using the OTA updater on the stock ROM! Also, dotn ever flash an image in Odin that isn't MDL, because if you go higher than MDL, you lose the ability to have a custom recovery. You are one of the lucky ones, cherish the ability, and read through threads before flashing, stuff. Good Luck!
Also, you don't have to worry if the ROM says safestrap compatible, because you don't have to use Safestrap, you can have TWRP instead (which is better), because all Safestrap ROMS are TWRP compatible, but not vice-versa.

Most if not all. They're all built from either GPE or CM.
All good advice. Plus when you root and get Twrp recovery installed do a backup thru Twrp (Nandroid) and keep on phone and put a copy on pc. That way you have something to restore if you get in trouble. Also, your bootloader is not unlocked. No Att i337s are. Instead devs use an exploit called Loki-Doki to bypass Sammy's security checks to allow custom roms/kernels etc to flash. You can google Loki Doki and read up on it. If the rom or kernel is not loki'd you will have to flash the zip thru recovery to allow the rom or kernel to flash. You will come across this when flashing International roms and kernels. I don't have link any more so maybe someone else can link it. Keep it on SD card. Like noted read OP carefully and last 20 pages of rom thread. Builds newer than MDL are blocked by Att from using Loki and require SafeStrap. Which you don't need to worry about. Although you can read up on it. Good Luck. [emoji1]

I hope you won't mind me jumping in your thread.,
I've recently had to odin my mdl phone back to stock. I haven't done that in a long time. I have root, and supersu, and busybox. The TWRP Manager app is malfunctioning and I cannot use it to install recovery. They list the crash I am experiencing in the play store as a known problem, and they say it will take time to fix. I have a good loki'd copy of twrp but the stock recovery doesn't want to install it. I even changed the name to "update.zip" and it fails. So my problem is I need a recovery. I am considering installing Clockworkmod's ROM Manager to install their recovery, and then using their recovery to install the good loki'd twrp that I want. Does this sound like a good plan? I have been away from this hobby for a while.

ROM manager didn't work. It said it installed cwm recovery but it didn't. I was able to install the latest TWRP with this ROM Installer and it worked like a charm! I then installed my custom TWRP from there, rebooted recovery, and installed Danvh's Google edition. I'm setting it up right now. I'm so happy to get my phone back. I just hope the odin flash fixed my problems.
To the OP try ROM installer to get your custom recovery going. Also if you like simple and fast AOSP check out Danvh's google edition rom, but stick to 4.4.4 for now. 5.0 is out but its buggy. Here's a link to the custom version of twrp that I use. https://www.dropbox.com/l/iDQQqlzNbyiFbQrMF4XcRc It's already loki'd so you can flash it if you have any problems with the latest build.

Not really. It was just required for kernels with non disabled encryption but eventually it was integrated into SuperSU and now with sources we have non encrypted kernels. And why before flashing the rom?

If it's not a custom rom then yes you will need to flash no verity zip unless you plan to root in which you can flash supersu which includes no verity.
