I have the same issue. I have no solution. Did you find anything. It just started for me a couple of days ago. Also had the phone since launch.
I want to try som electronic cleaner spray, just need to find some.

Tried using electronic cleaner spray and had no luck. No matter if I let the stuff seep into the gap it doesn't fix it, the rocker rolls, but needs to be pushed harder than necessary to even change the volume. Not sure why it happened.

Volume button is loose

Today I noticed that the Volume button is loose. Is this normal?
My Touch HD's Volume button is firmly in place.
How loose? Might has a little give in it but i wouldnt call it loose.
It's quite loose, I can move it with slightest touch .
My volume up button didn't work out of the box. There are a couple of threads about the problem but no solution that I saw other than take it back for a replacement which is what I did this week.

Thanks for your input. Anyway my volume button works fine, but it's just loose. I'm not sure I can get a replacement for this reason.
there is supposed to be a little "play" in all of the buttons. Its the same with PSP, DS and other portable gadgets. With a little give they won't break as quickly if they get snagged on clothing for example because they are not rigid and consequently have a little bit of "give". Hope that makes sense!
My first one had a solid volume button, the button on my replacement is very loose. Whether they will all get looser over time is another question...

Faulty volume button.

Has anybody have the same problem I have with the DHD volume button? My device has the bottom part of the button jutting out a little bit, and I am worried it might fall off. I have only had this phone for 2 and a half weeks, so before considering an exchange, has anybody had the problem and fixed it? I would hate to take the button off and not be able to put it back on properly.
Can you take pic and upload it?

I had the same problem. I sent mine back to Phones4u after about a week.
Whether it would have fallen off or not, I don't know - but as mine was like that after a week or so I didn't want to take any chances.

Here are the pictures, hope they're good enough quality.
Mine's the same, it's going back when vodafone get more stock.
I also noticed the top of the screen clicks and creaks as if its loose.
Mine is the openmarket version and vodafone only have the branded handsets in stock anyone know the difference?
Just return it.
Hi all,
I've my phone about a month now and I have almost the same problem with the volume button.
Actually it isnt that bad as the pictures above but you can definetally feel that the vol-down button sticks a litle bit out while the vol-up is very hard to press.
(The powerbutton is also hard to press but that seems to be with everyones phone)
It seems HTC is very bad in making hardware buttons, I had also button problems with my Touch HD and my HD2!
What do you recommend me? Should I return it or not?
Ps for htc maybe:
The main reason why htc makes hard to press (power) buttons is to avoid acitentally turning the device on/off while its in your pocket or wathever.
I have a solution, make good easy to press CAPACTIVE (power) HARDWARE buttons.
I think that should solve a lot of problems
The bottom bit of the volume button comes out a bit too on mine but not that far!

From the pictures, i had the exact same problem. On day one, i was so happy to have the phone i looked passed it ( it was the very slightest bit sticking out ), then eventually a week later it really started coming loose, when you press volume up for example the bottom of the button would literally pop out and dangle.
In the end i arranged for a replacement the next day as i was illegible as i only had, had the phone for a week. What struck me is the elastics holding the volume rocker in place? thats the last thing i'd expect something made out of "metal" to be locking it in place.
Hi all,
i have the same problem. the volume rocker is not sticking to much out but you can definitely feel the difference between the upper and the lower side of the button. the upper side is like pushed in and kind of hard to press and you don't fell the "click" when you push the vol up. the lower side i slightly sticking out but you can fell the "click" when you push the vol down.
how do yours fell when pushing vol up?
i don't know if i should replace the device or not???
here are some pics of my problem
thanks

I returned mine and I think you should too.
Works perfectly now, but not sure if it can last 20 months as my old one broke so early. Taking the greatest of care whilst touching the volume rocker now. Kinda sad that a device so expensive has quite a few cosmetic flaws.
Exact same issue with mine i dabbed some super glue ont he plastic and the metal. Its alot better now. Seen new buttons on ebay, has anyone tried these yet? How do you install them?

In the picture you attached, the volume key lok in the correct place. However, the Aluminum or battery cover is not in the correct shape. I can see some distortion.

Volume down button getting flimsy

Seems the button wont work unless you apply some pressure. It got worst and worst. It still works, just not as easy as volume up. Should I RMA it? Should I unroot before I do? Still have access and it works fine. Just the damn button sucks.
funny you mention this.
i noticed by volume up is a little "looser". its got some wiggle to it which concerns me will wear out after some usage.

Loose buttons?

Just wondering if anyone has slightly loose buttons. As in, if I tap them lightly I get a tiny metal on plastic sound as if it the button itself wasn't attached to the sensor on the inside.
I'd like to have a perfect device but I'm afraid of RMAing and getting a screen issue or something worse.
Yeah I noticed that too, not really an issue. Also if you press lightly on the power button wothout activating it you can feel it spring back...just an fyi

is the volume button springy as well? just trying to make sure I got a defect-free phone. I haven't had a phone yet with springy side buttons. Seems like they might not last that long??
Not like the power button.
Mine are loose as well but I think it's common across many devices. I've had loose volume and power buttons on my Note 4, Moto X 2014, and even the HTC One M9. I've checked on these occasionally and have been told that a little "play" in the buttons is normal.

volume button feel NOK

After 2 weeks usage of my new Z1 the volume up/down rocker button has become "spongy" with no feel or travel when pushed.
Volume up/down still works (for now) but I fear it is going to degrade and perhaps stop working all together.
Also the power button feels sticky from time to time ... like there is something up there too.
Anyone got any idea what is going on with the hardware here?
Mine no problem. Hard use since November.
My only problem with this phone was USB cable. Sometime doesn't charge. Replaced with another one and perfect.
