Going back to stock for warranty from custom rom - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I have an international version phone and I need to get it back to stock and I have flashed to a custom rom.
Is it possible for me to get the phone back to stock so it would be able to be repaired under warranty?

So far i know Samsung is able to see if your mobile was flashed or not. And if i remember right Knox gets triggered and this is a very obvious sign for a warranty losing manipulation. Only if you flash ORIGINAL firmwares the warranty is still valid. Hope you can somehow sort this issue out mate.

Go to download mode to see if knox is tipped. I think yours is. If so no warranty. Google for instructions.

If you've flashed a custom rom and Knox is tripped its impossible to go back to pure stock. Samsung will always see knox has been tripped and this invalidates your warranty.

Where are you from? According to EU regulation in EU modifying software does not affect warranty on hardware (unless manufacturer can prove that software damaged the hardware).

I have International version and also before this the same on S7 which I needed fixed and didnt happen lol so yes it triggers knox and warranty is void they wont repair take it back or basically do anything to it unfortunately bro. You cant hide, change or do anything to fake the knox etc lol so pretty screwed tbh

Not true mate, mine was a faulty screen from the phones own doing and straight away they check knox and give it back lol sucks

According to the European Directive 1999/44/CE, replacing the original operating system with another does not void the statutory warranty that covers the hardware of the device for two years unless the seller can prove that the modification caused the defect.
More info http://fsfe.org/freesoftware/legal/flashingdevices.en.html
I actually got new screen on S6 edge with custom firmware without any question

Not in UK, they check and if knox is tripped they wont repair it (although the UK isn't really in the EU anymore).

Good day.
I'm from Portugal and i had to send my S7 to Samsung for repairs after i bricked the phone with Xposed.
They repaired it without me having to pay a thing.

Just flash stock firmware and see if you're lucky.

If the motherboard is fried... samsung won't know if knox is tripped. So you know what must be done...

And how can you do this?

Connect the usb wires straight to the wall outlet? Be careful though, you could also be electrocuted.

In UK too. Heck...i even returned a knox tripped Galaxy S7 to Carphone Warehouse within "2 weeks return" policy. And was still with a custom rom and twrp installed. I didn't bothered to return to stock because I knew what my rights are.

Not sure because brexit, but in the rest of the EU I don't care if they want or not, they have to repair it/ take it back. It's got nothing to do with what Samsung thinks how important Knox is. It European law.

My G4 was bootloader unlocked and developed loop boot fault and LG said they would not honor warranty.
I therefore claimed through my phone insurance and they exchange the phone with a new unit. They said that root status or bootloader unlock did not void any insurance cover as per EU regulation.
P.S the UK is still in the EU until March 2019...
Thanks

I can only go with what Samsung told me last year when I tried to get my S7 fixed when it wouldn't switch on after 4 months. I sent it to them under warranty and they sent it straight back saying knox had been tripped and warranty was voided and they wouldn't repair.

Anyone know what the rules are for Australia and if there is a law that means they have to repair it? Did buy it off ebay..

DO NOT FLASH THE NEW BOOTLOADER - Unless you know what you are doing!
MJ5 Bootloader is safe to downgrade and the wifi works on this bootloader.
XXUEMK4 Bootloader is not safe!!
My friend says that he can not downgrade, because after he tried he got "Kies Emergency Mode" and his odin failed.
After he installed MK4 back everything worked again.
DO NOT TRY TO DOWNGRADE IF YOU HAVE THE NEW BOOTLOADER!

Yeah I have seen that too so tried with wifi patched and worked fine.. So still wifi patch will wifi patch should work but I will try to look to this bootloader when time permits. But still I doubt this new bootloader may have blacklisted old bootloader and it may make irreversible changes. Also if downgrade remain successful, further upgrade may cause issue.

to fix odin fail, we have to back to 4.1.2.
first, good thing that there is 2 stable leaks without this flag.I guess we should all stick to MJ5 for a while.
But now i'm thinking what should my nest device be? I loved Samsung devices, because they are so easy to root, flash roms and still you can save the warranty. Now my blacklist contains, HTC, Sony, Motorola and Samsung.Do Asus and LG lock their bootloader too?
And there is some bad news from Google itself. seems they came up with methods to help OEM for preventing unlocking bootloader in 4.4 KitKat.

Is there a way I can downgrade this bootloader?
the way they took time to slowly yet steadily introduce the Note 2 forums to the full force of the Knox poison you would believe how much control they already have over these forums.
it can only be LOVE, true love ;p
May their conscience trouble them over this; if they have one, that is.
My note ii is owned by me, bought it and not on contract. Flag is now 1. Still runs fine, and I don't need knox stuff on the phone.

[Q] knox warranty void 0x1 after official update ?

i updated with Kies3 from 4.3(sweden) to the new release of 4.3(sweden) that was suppose to fix some bugs etc.. but during the update i noticed that the knox was triggered ? how is that possible ?
since its triggered now, do i have to care about it anymore ? i dont need warranty since i repair myself but the updates will still come or not ?
Hmm, i didnt root or anything just because of not triggering it but now i got nothing to loose :S or should i report it to samsung/my provider ?
Q1: how did this happen ?
Q2: can i still update thrue knox when 4.4 release ?
Q3: does this mean i can root again without loosing anything ?

OK, so you have not rooted the phone before, but after the official update via Kies you have the Knox screwed up.
Well, the explanation is simple: Peter Pan had some... intense relationship with the dusty Fairy and this is the result.

my i9500 is KNOX 0x0 and i'm updating my official firmware on weekly-bases every time a new official firmware arrives.
i hope it answered your question.

So this "official" update is triggering Knox for some people. I have emailed Samsung in regards to this but they want me to call to talk to someone in their Voice department. Wish there was some way to contact a manager or VP to inform them.

Refurbished GT I9500 INDIA 4.2.2

Guys i am new to samsung and buying a refurbished S4 9500 india version with 6 months warranty from samsung with 4.2.2 firmware on it for Rs 20,000 actual price is now for new device is Rs 28,000
so i wanted to know that is it safe to upgrade and root it to 4.3 without having knox bootloader ?? ( dont want 4.4.2 because some people said it cant write to memory card + we cant downgrade then)
i dont want to get into knox thing and dont want to void the warranty also. so to avoid knox should i do this ?
1. Root 4.2.2 + install custom recovery ( dont know how to do that because its old firmware and all i can find info is about new firmwares)
2. flash 4.3 knox free stock rom ( i want only stock rom no custom rom because stock rom offers better camera features and shutter speed etc. etc.)
3. if i dont root or install custom recovery in 4.2.2 and simply flash via odin 4.3 stock firmware 2013 December 4.3 I9500XXUEMK9 will it contain knox ???
the main thing i want is to have 4.3 stock firmware with Root + custom recovery But no knox
is this the only things i need to do ?
do i need to keep in mind something else also ?
i am from nexus 4 so u guys must be knowing how we are addicted to flashing roms and kernels everyday but its not at all complicated like this

its surprising that the device is still on 4.2.2
I will prefer checking binary counter and knox status first,it may happen that its already tripped..
if its normal, then check for a Knox free rom then flash it,u can root it later.
also,it will be better if u go to Samsung and get it checked, whether its still in warranty or not(just ask.them for a software upgrade, and when they say all okay, give any excuse and leave..)

it means all those people who are on 4.3 are either not rooted and those who are rooted have void their warranty?

It depends on local laws. In the US, if you trip Knox Samsung can void the warranty at their discretion. I've heard that in some European nations, Samsung is required by law to honor the warranty for physical defects even if Knox is tripped.

May you have a list of that nations? Any idea about Italy? Because i'm not scared to software problems but i would not pay again an intervent to fix some hardware part, like happened with my S4 where the HDMI output and the antenna stopped working.... But i was already out the maximum time for the warranty...
Anyway is there a way to reduce the Knox counter?

i have the tmonile version which apparently cannot be rooted right now because of a locked bootloader. but in the developer options there is an option that says "OEM unlock" which is turned off by default. i assumed turning it on would solve the locked bootloader issue. can someone explain to me what that option is for?? what am i missing??
also, the only phone i've ever rooted is my htc one m8...and it was well after its release so there was no issue. what is the likeliness that that the S7 US version will be rootable?? is this a normal thing...if i cant root this i will return it promptly

Despite the presence of that switch (which is there merely as a standard part of Android's developer options), your bootloader cannot be unlocked and your device cannot be rooted.

People forget there's the G9300 and G9308 Chinese/Hong Kong S820 variants. Would be interesting to hear if they're also locked or not.
Going back through TEKHD's deceased T-Mobile S7 rooting thread, I think this is one of the truly saddest things I've seen on XDA:
TEKHD said:
Well... it all comes down to this...Locked Bootloader = total system/all partitions lockdown... (apparently our device is 100% locked) and that means our only hope is something like this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/root-pingpongroot-s6-root-tool-t3103016 (as an example)basically, we need to find a vulnerability "Bug" so we can at least get a chance to attempt an exploit... (and ultimately gain root)... assuming there is such "bug" / vulnerability... , that will most likely allow us full access to the system partition only... meaning, no kernels, no custom recovery (no TWRP)...also... IF... we can find that bug... and IF we can actually root thru it... that "bug" will be corrected via OTA/Update....and that means...for example... with Firmware G935TXXXXXX0001 we can all have root... but maybe with the next Firmware G935TXXXXXX0002 ... we are all back to square 1... with no root... so... we have to be reaaaaaaally careful when updating/OTA's, etc... basically... this is really really sad/bad news for us... the device has NO DEVELOPMENT FUTURE guys...

I feel terrible for all the guys who trusted T-Mobile and bought the S7/E from them thinking that the bootloader would be unlocked.
For now, the only hope for the Snapdragon version is:
1. Spam John Leger's Twitter account demanding that T-Mobile walk the talk of being the un-carrier.
2. Look for an exploit like PingPong root on the S6. However, that will be short-lived since Samsung will patch the exploit on the next security update.

Thanks and have a nice day!

People forget there's the G9300 and G9308 Chinese/Hong Kong S820 variants. Would be interesting to hear if they're also locked or not.

The S7 edge HK dual sim is the G9350, bootloader is unlockable however there are no english guides on it currently and reported problems through using xiao1u's method. See this thread
Great thread...so many other threads to follow to the status of the Snapdragon yard sale. Thanks for putting this together. Please keep updated!

This is the most hopeful thing for TMo so far.
any updates here?
I'm watching every day and haven't seen anything new yet :/

What "Warranty void 1 (0x0)" means ?

I bought a new S7 edge from a local website.. it came 100 % sealed but my Warranty void = 1 (0x0)
what does that mean exactly ?? I know about samsung knox tripping but it is not (0x1) and I'm not able to use MyKnox app
Why that happened ?? mine was 100 % sealed
by the way I do not have "2G" network option.. only 3G and LTE.. maybe someone with odin tried to flash modem for LTE bands in my country or something!!!?
is there any solution to make it back to "0" ?

Very well.. but in the download mode the value is 0×0
What does that mean ?
Maybe a refurbished device? The box can be sealed easily again and the stickers are also not hard to reapply.

Installed this app, pretty usefu! One question I had though, does the option IMEI Backup act like a EFS backup? Like in the event I loose my IMEI, I can restore it using that backup?

1. I don't think so. You have to be rooted for the EFS backup anyway. One good tool is this ONE.
2. Take a look what @Tectas told you before. The same app that you installed can tell you if your device is refurbished or no (Image attached).

So download mode shows 0x0 and the phone info app shoes 0x1?...Definitely weird..... What about refurbishment check? Should say original..... Also I live in Alaska, USA and my carrier didn't catch on too quickly to the knox after the S4.... So when I received my S5, S6 they had put their own boot animation and flash a debloated rom on them.... Which tripped Knox.... Apparently someone told them about this cause when I got my S7 it was 0x0 and they didn't bother with putting their animation on the phone.... Maybe the phone you got was from a carrier and they tripped it by flashing something besides stock firmware?

IF KNOX is trip means the phone being alter and it can't be un-KNOX back and all KNOX features is gone include Samsung Pay.

It is showing 1 means the KNOX is trip. Your device is alter, it had been root before and alter something.

Ye download mode definately shows that Knox has been tripped. I'm rooted and mine says the same. If this was brand new I would suggest returning it.

Just checked my download mode also.... It shows 1(0x0500) but I'm also rooted with a tripped Knox....
Galaxy S7 edge
Ohhh that's really bad
If I will root it again the value will be "2" ?
Nope, it's an on/off indicator which can't be disabled once turned on
