Why are all custom rom's not as smooth as OOS - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

While we're at a point that all customs roms are pretty much bug free, I notice not a single one has a smooth ui as oos. App opening and all is still the same, it's just the ui that is not as smooth. Will this ever change?

What roms are AOSP and what are CM ?

What roms are really AOSP ? i want those really smooth experience with no random reboots and non stable modifications. Those who are not cm based.
In my experience, the most stables roms are stock Samsung followed by custom ROMs based off stock ROMs.
With AOSP and CM, it really depends on the apps. in that some ROMs are stable with some apps but not others. Kernel versions also play a role in stability.
AOSP is the base, the backbone and Cyanogen is based on AOSP. However this doesn't necessarily mean that both of them are in line for their stability, I mean AOSP is stable as hell obviously, AOSP is how Google wanted Android to be, which you can find on Nexus phones, or Motorola ones, which are almost AOSP (except Motorola's own apps), and Sony phones too, but Samsung, HTC and LG decided to put their own skins.
Now I personally don't like TouchWiz, it's definitely significantly heavier than AOSP, and thus lags time to time, but at the same time its significantly more stable than the Cyanogen ports for Note 3. So if you want real AOSP experience then you will have to opt for Nexus or Motorola or Sony.
Well ... my depends on the hardware, too. Seen my note randomly crashing running stock rom. Got the motherboard exchanged twice which reduces the reboots. The
stagefright update disaster made me switch to cm 12.1 and this is the most stable rom (nightly!) for me so far. So I think there is no such thing as an answer to your question. It really comes down to the hardware in many cases, too. I know loads of 9005 owners who experience crashes on stock rom, me one of them. To me it seems the note 3 is a crashy phone by design. Good luck!

I have the sm-n900w8 and it's been very stable. No random crashes or reboots using stock KK and LP.

Exactly same here. With the OF3 ROM I hit my maximum up time ever, for over 21-22 days, if this is not stability, nothing is.

Look and Feel of Cyanogen/ AOSPA based ROMs compared to Stock ROMs...

Hi All,
I have flashed a lot of ROMs on my OnePlus X, but every-time I decide either to go back to the stock Oxygen OS or OEM based ROMs such as Flyme/ H2OS or Color OS.
The reason behind is every-time I flash Cyanogen/ AOSPA based ROMs, it doesn't feels as Solid as the stock ROM, looks like something is missing (the UI doesn't feels polished, the colors don't seem punchy).
Everything is cool with Cyanogen/ AOSPA like battery usage, smoothness, customisation etc., but the feel which the stock/ OEM based ROMs have is missing from these ROMs.
You may have observed the differences between the two.
It can be my feeling only, but I wanted opinion from you guys about this.
I'm using OxygenOS 2.2.1-X with Android N-ify and PerfectColorBar Xposed modules.
Thanks in advance.
I think what you are experiencing is a placebo effect that stock is more refined than CM and AOSPA. Regardless of whether this is true or not, I believe that for you it is a placebo effect because if you really do think CM and AOSPA have an unmatured UI, then you should not be using PerfectColorBar because that too has glitches. PerfectColorBar isnt so perfect, in some instances the colour is incorrect. CM and AOSPA are the more refined custom ROMs anyway, which to me seem equally matured in terms of UI as stock. As for some other custom ROMs i do agree they they seem unrefined, such as AICP where the bluetooth share button is coloured in the gallery while the other buttons are in white.
What OP has said is so true, as it is also happens to myself. All this time, I thought it only me that have that feelings.
So, beside the weak LTE signal bug that plagued almost MM ROM for OPX (at least for E1003 in Asia region as confirmed by a lot users already), the half-backed feelings of custom ROM is what makes me always going back to my OOS TWRP backup.

Thanks for your opinion mate but PerfectColorBar is working absolutely perfect for me. I was using FlatStyleColorBar before but that plugin was causing slowness while opening apps, that's why replaced with this one.
Anyways, the placebo effect thing might be true for me
luckily (?!) i only booted oos once to enable usb debugging etc [emoji16]

Well I do agree with OP. You have to realize OOS and H2OS are especially made for oneplus devices. This means full work on this devices. They HAVE to make it look good to sell it hehe.
CM on the other hand is generic for all devices. Also any variant coming from it.
Just with one feature which is tristate key states on H2OS show how specific the ROM was built, on CM I don't use them for nothing at all. On h2os it has a beautiful UI when changing modes, and those modes actually make sense and are useful.
The thing here is OOS is really bad in my opinion. H2os is really really good, but for some reason I keep coming back to AOSPA or Sultans ROM hehe. It's more customizable and has some really handy features.
But with ROMS is all about taste. Each person has a different opinion, so just use the one you like the most and you'll be happy

Yeah, OOS on the OPX feel like a beta test rom. I switched with sultan cm13 three week ago, i'll wait OOS 3.0 but for now i stay on it, it work well enough for a daily use. In fact there are some bugs here and here but it's like nothing compared to OOS 2.2.1-X...

Well, the reason of flashing custom ROMs, mods etc is that you want to take control of your device. You get barebone stock android. You can easily theme, customize icons, fonts etc. Want better sound quality, flash somethings, use greenify with all its feature working etc.
I remember the first time I flashed custom ROM on my note 2, it was kind of shock to me because of so much changes in look, but smoothness was what kept me there. Sometime later, I could not imagine myself going back to TW.
There are some very good ROMs and with proper theming, you can not even tell the difference (except smoothness in Custom ROMs ). Rest is your opinion, if you don't like something, noone can make you .
But the strange thing is, I don't have this kind of weird feelings of half-baked ROM when I flashed Pure Nexus, Cataclysm, or CM variant on my Nexus 5. Even everything seems better than stock ROM from Google.

It may be because Nexus are made to be used with stock android and flashing other custom ROM based on stock android doesn't makes much of a visual difference.

Looking for Rom like PureNexus, fast, clean and smooth

Hi, i've counted about 30 roms in the roms section... I'm looking (like the title) for a rom like purenexus on nexus but for oneplus 5... For who don't know what i'm talking about, it's not full of customization and it's very fast... Suggestion?
The stock ROM?
It offers a slight bit of customizations, but not too much. And it seems pretty fast to me.
Your only other option may be Slim. They don't have many features and pretty much no bloat.
When I say they don't have too many features I mean in comparison to ROMs such as Resurrection Remix which is loaded.
Dirty Unicorns is on par with PN in terms of stability, performance and features. Sadly is not on XDA but you can grab it from devsbase or their G+ community page.
Omnirom with pixel launcher
thank you all... i really love how fast the freedom os is and no other rom is so fast but i really miss substratum for themes... i've tried the resurrection remix is amazing but too much options for me and it's not fast like oxygen/freedom.... i tried also DU and PA but they're too laggy and too slow for me... I will try Slim7 and OminRom, thank you

fps lag

I'm experiencing famerate lag. Changing orientation, opening apps and transitions through the ui.
Anyone else is experiencing this? And if so you know what's causing it?

Yep, its a serious problem with the OnePlus 5.
Animations, scrolling, everything is a mess on Oxygen OS, to the point where I have unlocked my bootloader to try non-OOS based ROMs.
This thing stutters more than my old S7 Edge, and the Note 8 is significantly smoother than this.
Awesome example of how poor OOS is currently:
Go into Pocket Casts, subscribe to a podcast, open your subscriptions, tap on a tile. The simple animation will stutter like crazy as it opens. Same with play store.
Scrolling is atrocious for such a high specced device. 8GB/SD835 means nothing if smoothness is the worst by far out of any android flagship.
I couldn't even get an answer out of OnePlus support if Oreo would fix things.
Yup, the overall is experience is kinda jittery and laggy, my iPhone 6 and even my Nexus 5 are way smoother.
I've found OOS to be a lot smoother with Blu Spark kernel but even then OOS is so unstable that several times out of nowhere some system wake lock would suddenly go wiggy and prevent the phone from going into Doze. It's happened on three different builds of OOS and it was a different wake lock each time and caused massive idle battery drain. I haven't found any way to fix it other than doing a clean flash of OOS and fresh install of my apps. OOS isn't stable enough to be the stock operating system on any Android phone, let alone a $600 one that advertises itself as a flagship killer.
Don't know what you talking about, I never see a single lag/stutter in my OP5 and actually like OOS even coming from Stock Android (Nexus 6P)

Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with this phone. I also flashed to LineageOS to see how it would perform compared to OxygenOS, but have you noticed what I noticed? It's still Jitters bits. I have eventually got it smooth with tweaking the kernel settings around until it would scroll smooth. What has me confused is that it happened when I switched rom still, and even after trying a different kernel it still would stutters while scrolling.. so it has me really confused as to what the problem is.
My kernel setup is butter smooth in LineageOS, but only help OxygenOS a bit as it still slightly stutters. It's smooth in chrome, but certain apps like Instagram still stutters on OOS

yeah noticed this also on stock OOS. IDK whether this is just placeboo effect or not, but it feels much smoother now on my current set-up (xXx ROM + ElementalX Kernel)
Running stock oos with simple gx wouldn't be happier I actually came back from the non oos roms because I missed the smoothness and app opening animations from stock oos .... could you give me an example of UI jitters or where it occurs because I haven't run into any problems . Speaking of chrome smoothness scrolling could be better but I am fine in instagram Reddit (boost app) and wouldn't complain as per opening of play store is also smooth with opener game of apps from play store is fine as well .

Ok so I uninstalled some apps and it's smooth more ?
This is lame because I installed a "million" apps on my 3t and this NEVER happened. But anyway
Do you have the elementalX app installed or did you just flash it?

Did a speed test after getting rid of some stuff and my OP5 running xXx Rom is faster than my bro 0P5 running stock.

I installed the app but just for display color tweaking. I leave the rest untouched. This is the smoothest kernel so far at least to me, our experience may differ tho.

Ok I'll use it when xXx 4.2 is released. :highfive:

What rom is the smoothest and stable? Did anything come close to stock?

I've tried AICP and lineage, both Oreo. Both had just don't run well when compared to stock ROMs. I see an OG pixel with similar hardware operate as smooth as butter. Any smooth ROMs?

Hi. I am currently with aosp extended 5.4 and it works very well between this and Validus 1.7 I think they are the best I've tried, in my opinion.
Oreo for our device as of now isn't in good state if you want the stability. Big battery drain and some minor different problems here and there are present in every oreo rom.
I'd suggest some stable nougat roms like omnirom, mokee or paranoidandroid. Battery life is good and phone feels perfect in everyday usage.
Aicp is one of the smoothest very good in nearly every way as is aosp extended, lineage,RR,aosip, validus and some I've missed (all oreo)are really good.I don't experience the lag and instability and battery is pretty good too.
