G900V kernel with stock ROM suggestions - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my Verizon GS5 a while back using Towelroot. I turned off all the bloat I could find but I still have pretty bad battery life independent of what I do with the phone. I can have it sitting on my desk and it will be down to ~20% on the commute home not having touched it or I can use it periodically and be in close to the same situation. Using various battery tools, it appears to me that this is not a problem with a specific app and appears to be just how the phone works. Not using anything, the battery drops at a rate of 7%/hour so 5am-4pm (11 hours) will be close to 80%.
That said, I was thinking a different kernel, an upgraded ROM (running KitKat 4.4.4 currently), or a custom variant might be a good option. This is my only phone, so I'm not inclined to just jump in and start flashing it right now. If I could get help narrowing it down to a couple options, that would be great!
Current options I'm considering:
* flash Blaze or Avalon Kernel or something else on the unified kernel list
* upgrade to Marshmallow, Lollipop, or Nougat
* flash to CM or some other custom ROM and kernel

[Q] Just returned to Razr M.. Deodexed Stock Rom? Fav kernel for battery life?

Hello folks. I have recently returned to using an XT907 after I lost my original whilst doing a kegstand at the beach on the fourth of july . Anyway, I have been perusing the piles of recent threads and am having trouble finding whether anybody has been keeping an up-to-date (4.1.2) rom which is perfectly stock, except deodexed, and perhaps debloated. If anybody could just point me in the direction of a thread with that information I would be grateful. I like this style rom because I like to make my own minimal design tweaks, but most importantly it seems to give me the best battery life and long term stability. If you have a seperate custom Rom that has been exceptional in both of these catagories and you care to share, that would be appreciated as well.
I am also interested in what kernel people are using with their custom roms, and how that has affected their battery life. I was able to get at least 24+- hours with solid use roughly 1yr ago which a custom setup like I've described and a custom PB&J kernel. With stock everything now, I'm lucky if I get 12 hours.
If I missed a recent thread containing any of the information that I've just discussed, I apologize but I didn't see any. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!
if you want a good battery life, I suggest you use the CM stable rom for xt907, 4.2.2 andriod OS.
you can use dsixda's Android Kitchen to deodex the stock Rom your self if you cant find a rom you like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
you can then debloat using this safe list

Personally I'm on CM KK nightlights and have no desire to go back to a JB rom. Fast, smooth and battery life is great. I'm using CM kernel that comes built into the rom but I know a lot of people use arrrghhh's

D800 question

I'm kinda lost here. I'm looking to buy a D800, but wanted to know if root and leave the phone free to install aosp roms like CM11 will be possible and not complicated as hell. Wich are the steps I should follow to root / unlock, install twrp, and backup the original rom? (To later install CM11)...
Please any advice, links, etc will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
The phone itself is good but the stock software is annoying. There are stable aosp roms available, but they have all very bad Cameras and inferior battery life. So basically most people would be forced to use the crappy lg stock rom anyway. Rooting is very easy as well as recovery
Oh that's bad news... had the idea to flash it with CM11 (while 12 is under development), or G3 roms, some people had told me this phone were good with AOSP roms... It's only the camera that does not work as intended on aosp roms? No fix for battery?

I have D800 and it really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I can get 12 hours of usage on CM11 with 4-5 hours of screen time. Stock Rom is fine but then again I use the T-Mobile stock Rom on mine when I'm stock or CloudyG3 Rom. Right now I'm using Flyme OS Rom and I started this morning at 45% and was at 7% after 12 hours of work and had 4 hours of screen time.

Yes I'm about to purchase a d800, if it is good with CM11, then its good for me. Maybe later it will have lollipop roms and that will be another era... Thanks for the answers! Cheers.
Hey FedericoUY, I received my phone about a month ago and I'll go through my journey from all of the likely problems and what's required for unlocking, rooting, installing a rom for the first time on this device. I'll describe the benefits/disadvantages from the different rom distributors recommended for this device. Until a few days ago I would have agreed AOSP was better left avoided on this device, and why CM11 is still not recommended for the G2.
When I received my G2, while I had the intention to flash it. I was gravely disappointed with it, because of the shocking software and default setup. But it's become my favourite phone since. I too thought CM11 would do it for me, it really didn't on this phone. And the display & specs make it seem extremely outdated, not to mention none of the phone-specific features really worked.
(In order of events)
Sim Locking for AT&T (do first)
By default it's locked, as I imported it through the US and without an account for them I had to purchase a 3rd party unlock code for $2. Strangely I had to keep it unlocked on the stock firmware for a certain amount of time (tried a day) before it remembered the unlocking when flashing a custom firmware.
Rooting (do secondly)
The only method which worked on the latest G2 stock rom was to use "Stump Root" in the "Brute force" mode as the latest rom version didn't have a pre-configured rooting routing.
Installing a custom recovery (do third)
The only method which worked on the latest G2 stock rom was an app called "D800_AutoRec.apk" which just installed the latest TWRP recovery, from there I could flash anything.
Which roms are decent for the D800?
While personally I've stayed with more AOSP roms like CM and AOKP, the best rom & kernel to use in terms of performance/battery life and phone specific features is not the stock G2 software nor AOSP. I'll explain further why.
For the kernel, the arguably most matured and feature rich, battery friendly and performance suited kernel is the Dorimanx kernel. Which is unfortunately only compatible with stock G2 & G3 roms.
With this in consideration and all of the improvements in the G3 firmware, fully supporting this phone's features, makes the G3 roms peoples choice, in particular CloudyG3 targeted for the G2.
When it comes to AOSP like roms, there is two okay kernels which are compatible with CM and the other is only compatible with AOSP roms, with a few exceptions. Both of these kernels have poor battery life in comparison and produce a lot of heat, not to mention lesser abilities in terms of tweaking (overclocking, underclocking rate, faster charge, etc). It generally only gets worse from here using rom released kernels. It's fairly uncommon for features such as double tapping wake to work, and the lack of on-screen keyboard usability improvements.
However, Lollipop has turned things around. While not flossing as much battery life savings as CloudyG3 with the Dorimanx kernel, performance, design/look (can change Google keyboard to old theme) has brilliantly increased. It's been the only close to stock rom I've ever been largely happy with. Despite not having any real CM features and a few bugs at this moment in time.
Therefore, if you like the ability to tweak and charge faster and overclock a lot with great battery life I suggest CloudyG3 and Dorimanx. If you want an AOSP rom, I'd use Lollipop. If you want a full featured stock rom with a nice kernel, I'd wait awhile and opt for CloudyG3 until lollipop roms mature. For a battery comparison, the stock G3 rom with a custom kernel lasted me 5-7 days without charging, with CM11 I can only get about 1 day if I'm lucky.

[I9505] CM12 nightlies vs official stock ROM for Lollipop?

Hi guys,
Now that the stock ROM has been around for a week, I was curious if someone made the switch from CM12 or any other custom lollipop ROM to stock and would like to share their experience?
I, for instance, switched from CM11 (4.4.4) to stock and found the battery drain worse than in kitkat. Customization is also a clear drawback on stock lollipop since Xposed modules are not ported yet. Would like to know if any custom ROM matches the stability of stock and goes beyond it's features :what:
I don't usually use GPE or CM roms but I'm really really liking JFLTE-GPE 5.0.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557353.
I've using it for a week and been having great battery. Last night I just installed Xposed alpha for Lollipop with GravityBox[LP} with no issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.ceco.lollipop.gravitybox
Using the same GPE rom as posted above for about 3 months. No problems.
It also has good battery life. If you let the phone idle, it will last you around 2 weeks
That's what the battery stats reported this morning.
I used CM11 for a long time, (since it was released till now), and I have to say, I'm a fan of being technical updated. ATM I'm using the Stock 5.0.1 Samsung Lollipop (of course, with removed Bloatware), and I'm afraid. I like the Samsung UI für the Stock, thats a little reason for me to use the Stock-ROMs. I don't have any Battery issues or find it worse than CM11. And even if, I've got my JBL Charge and Charge 2 to charge my phone in city. haha.
Well, i like them both but for now, I prefer Stock 5.0.1 (and can't wait for 5.0.2/5.1.0). Maybe i change back to CM12 (Antares/Alucard) when they made a 5.1.0 Update (forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-orig-develop/rom-cyanogenmod-12-t2943934).
I too used CM11 for a while on my i9505 and I loved the customization freedom. But I was pretty miserable about the battery life and overheating issues. Also, the stock camera was MUCH MUCH better than the one on CM 11 or even the Google Cam.
I am now back to stock with 5.0.1 and the battery life and camera have revived. But I equally miss the customization, so was wondering if anyone would recommend a custom ROM over stock.
I just went through an ordeal all for Viper4Android. Tried various kernel work arounds on stock 5.0.1 to get the V4A driver to install (no luck). Flashed to CM 12.1 and thought I was set only to find that cellular service (no sim card) didn't work. Flashed back to CM 11 and had the same issue. Then tried a ROM call Triforce and bricked my phone. Ended up doing a factory reset/wipe back to Lollipop 5.0.1 and now everything works again, but I'm not happy with the sound quality I'm getting now vs what I had with V4A under Kitkat. Wish I'd have never upgraded. V4A was wonderful. Anyway, CM 12.1 seemed to be pretty good for the short time I had it.
Part of me wants to try CM again but I don't want to go through all the problems.
Viper4Android needs a permissive kernel to work. If SELinux status is Enforcing then it won't work. Generally custom kernels have it set to permissive.

You are correct. The stock Lollipop kernel would never change to permissive no matter what the SELinux setting was. Very frustrating. Only solution that I could find was kernel replacement via a different ROM. Didn't quite work out though due to the cellular network loss.
Edit: back on topic, I made the switch but only out of necessity and not desire.

[Q] SPH-L720 [Sprint] Samsung GS4- Pressing Q?s for Devs/Pros

Hi,
I bought my Samsung as an Android Newb in 2013. After enjoying the functionality and customization of the phone, I soon became aware of the ultimate power of these super customization-friendly portable devices (Growing up in the 486x66Mhz PC Days makes me appreciate this). In short, I learned to root, work recovery, flash ROMs, integrate apps and take advantage of the open-source nature of the beast.
For all that, I mainly stuck with CyanogenMod, eventually braving the Snapshot 11, and it has been quite suitable and very stable. But, it is 2015 now, and my phone is needing more and more tweaking, being near the end of it's life cycle. I am looking for a change to something more custom. Hopefully, a dev has just what Im looking for. I just have a few questions that I can't find answers to before I dive into the flash happy world of testing ROMs or nightlys. This is my ONE phone after all.
I have the Sprint S4 (SPH-L720)...It was OTA'd to 4.4.4 and i use CM 11 M12 snapshot with CMRecovery 6.0.4.7, TB, NAE Modem. I originally rooted and flashed long ago with Odin, but I am more proficient with other methods now...
With this device is think TWRP is the necessary choice, tho Odin can be used for certain purposes.
1) I need a Mod that incorporates a good balance of power saving with performance when needed.
2) I would prefer a kernel that is good, but that I don't have to mess with
3) I would like to know the best firmware choice for my device
4) I am not sure if I should go to a Lollipop port, stay with 4.4.4 or roll back to a stable 4.4.2
5)I like CyanogenMod, but I am looking for something with a little less built in, a lighter gapps, and slicker interface
6) From what I see, SlimKat looks good, but is it a good choice for my device.
7) FInally, and most importantly, What is the best process for getting my rig set up, and then flashing nightly's when needed and not having to re set up my entire device? Just a dirty flash?
Thank you, and I look forward to hearing back, and even testing in the future.

Best ROM/Kernel combination for an old S5?

Recently my phone broke. I found my old S5 (G900M, Snapdragon) in the garage and installed Lineage on it.
I'm pretty sure there's something terribly wrong with the battery. In use, it goes from 100% to 0% in an hour, and a bunch of apps have glitches. Not to mention that it's slow when browsing with FIrefox, and it likes to crash Firefox a lot.
So, I'm hoping that changing roms will make it better in some way.
But I also didn't do any research before installing Lineage, and I didn't install any kernel. I just installed Lineage because it's the one I know, I don't even know if running a newer android version and/or AOSP rom has advantages or disadvantages.
In an old thread, I heard that a stock, deodexed and debloated MM rom and the Boeffla kernel is the best way to go, and I had my eye on vincom's SuperLite MM Rom (still no idea on what kernel to use),
But I'd really like to have TwiFucker and I THINK it only supports LSposed, which requires Android 8.1 minimum.
I'm also used to having Magisk as the root, but that's a minor issue.
I'm accepting any and all suggestions, even if it's to stay on Lineage.
I'm also accepting suggestions of what governor to use, although I don't know what that is at all.
Please do link your recommendations though.
Thank you in advance!
