High RAM usage - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hey everyone. I have the 32GB/2GB RAM variant of the Moto G5 Plus and I'm noticing that, occasionally, the RAM usage spikes and the phone lags and even freezes. Is anyone else having this issue? I'm running the stock ROM with an unlocked bootloader.

make sense 4gb version uses 2.2gb on average

Are you using the experimental night mode? It was causing a memory leak in my device. Just turn it off and everything will be normal again.

Not really, Android just all other operating systems will scale the RAM usage to how much the system has.

I've heard from more than one place that Android 7 needs around 2GB minimum to function smoothly and I can kind of see how that is. I had exactly what OP is having on my Nexus 5 with 2GB no matter what Nougat ROM I used. The only way I could reduce how much it happened was by making the out of memory killer pretty aggressive.
Windows "adapts" to low memory conditions by moving things to virtual memory; Android adapts by killing apps and processes, both of which causes lags and stutterers. Unless you set the memory killer to be aggressive enough that it never has to find an app or process to kill upon opening a new app or process. One of the big reasons I wanted 4GB when moving to a new phone, I only see this "problem" getting worse as Android continues to mature and use more RAM.

hmm i always thought there was a lite and full version of android , but if android scales then u should be fine since android 7 runs ok on 1.5gb ram, check apps running in your background n see whats going on

Hi,
This isn't a positive commet. However, I want to advise people to not buy the the wrong device: The Moto G5 Plus with 2GB of RAM is a joke from Lenovo! Purchase only the model with 3GB or 4GB of RAM.

My 3GB Moto 5G Plus never seems to go above 1.8GB of RAM usage.

Just saying...I have the 2gb version and it is smooth af.
I have no freeze slowness issues that you speak of... Battery life is outstanding....I've posted in lineage thread and viper thread if you want to check my screens. I have been watching vram last few days and looks like this on average.....

I noticed my RAM usage would always be within spec, actually low around 1.2GB out of 2GB, but when I open the process monitor in the developer options, the cached apps would leave almost zero remaining free RAM. Cach is different in that it isn't actually "using" the RAM and is free to be released, but that's when I noticed little skips and lags here and there.
Edit: developer options, running services, then click the top right to view cached services. I'd have times when it would actually be a negative number in the free section, such as -25MB free. My Nexus 5 was always smooth as **** also, but it would get to where an app that usually opens instantly takes up to 5 seconds. Not a huge deal, but slightly annoying.

All day no recent killing

I have Magisk with Viper4Android FX module. I didn't use SU for G5 Plus, but it always worked for me on other phones.
I guess you have properly installed busybox, SELinux set to permissive and disabled or removed Music FX?

I know! And this the reason to say that is a joke from Lenovo... that model should never have existed. The minimum RAM for Android Nougat is 3GB of RAM. Only entry level devices have today 2GB of RAM... and the Moto G5+... is not a plus?
In fact, the Moto G5 regular and plus with 2GB are both "minus"!
Tock, tock, Lenovo... are you listening?

What would you like to see in a custom ROM?

As you know, the fact that bootloaders are unlocked leaves an open door for third party firmwares (custom ROMs) to be applied to the phone.
Usually custom ROMs expand the functionalities of the phone and correct some of the software shortcomings. Even though the phone is only recently in the market, there may be some feature wishes and some complaints already.
In short, what features shoud a custom ROM add and what shortcomings should it correct?
I will start:
With the not-so-last gen processor the Play has, it is probably necessary to be able to overclock it.
I would like a minimal ROM (aka without bloatware) as it seems that the booting time of stock ROMs is incredibly high and it is caused by bloatware.
I don't have the phone yet (it's on its way ^^) but I have read things about the brightness setting being too dim and not changeable.

Doesn't sound right. I usually have over 200 free when the phones idle and no where near full when using FPSE etc.
Disable auto brightness and can set it manual (and increase more brightness).

As mentioned, a bloat free rom. Pure Android port maybe?
There should be another loader than play, something thats able to load psx, snes, mame (single games) and every other games u installed by opening the pad. With the possibility to add/remove stuff after u install it.
Overclock is mentioned. (Only 1500 in quadrant original??) FPS is okay though.
(I hope wolves - sunderland is canceled, so we have something to look forward too.)

I think he's refering to Internal Storage rather than RAM.
Since we suffer from very low internal storage, it would be great if a new ROM would provide something similar to the app2sd application (forces apps to install all data to SD). Might be a big ask though?

Sure you can move most app data to the SD from settings AFAIK. Bit of a pain though so installing to SD automatically would be nice.

Yuck, I got that wrong I thought app2sd allowed the footprint part of the installation to be mostly moved to SD. Kinda hoped the 30Mb of Asphalt etc cud be reduced to <1Mb or sumthin. Daft now that I think of it.
I agree then, no point in app2sd cuz I manually move the data when I install stuff anyway.
Admin, can someone wipe my replies to this cuz it's only taking up space on what shud be a valuable thread!!
1, faster boot-up time.
2, ability to pick the games you want to have in the games launcher (or a new launcher).
3, widgets from desire.
4, R/L buttons as camera buttons when active.
5, R/L buttons as volume when camera not active, i find the original volume buttons a pain, even more when you have a case/shell on
6, brighter screen for them sunny days.

Nope im talking about ram. If you guys have issues with storage, fire up adb, connect your device. And input.
adb shell
$ pm setinstalllocation2
$ exit
This will force all apps to be allowed to install to the sd card, and games like ashpalt take less than a mb

App2EXT
As I hate the original android app2sd... as all widgets get broken by this method...
From what I've heard, since Verizon has fallen asleep.
1. Bare bone rom. Like to where you have to install gapps and other stuff. Only to have the apps android comes with.
2. R1 as take picture and L1 as focus.
3. Ability to add any shortcut to the "game app," forgot what it was called. Whether it be a app or game.
4. No overclock applied. Let the user add a overclocking app if they want.
5. Power control widget in the status bar.
6. And supper user of coarse

i want a stock android tbh, STOCK; and of-course, an overclocking module
id love an option to disable data traffic automatically when the phones screen is turned off, if this could be built into a custom stock gingerbread rom. the reason that would be awsome is cause it would double your batterylife and save using a widget and having to manually turn it on and off wasting time.
also R1 for taking picture and L1 for focus
having a battery percentage in the status bar would be amazing ( i know theres apps to do this but again if it was built in the rom as stock)
I would love a better keyboard, i came from an iphone and androids keyboard is just not accurate enough.
thanks in advance whoever takes the time to make this possible i understand it takes alot of time and effort to help others but rest assured it also makes many people happy . I wish sony would have released this phone in a more polished state it feels half finished and fragmented with all the apps and games markets

I can agree with that

WTF with the ram

i can only open about 3-4 app before my ram is full and its forcing to closing app . seriously ? wtf is this .
i feel like this phone is worse than n95 .
if i open a web page one youtube link and i still have in memory my message app it will start closing app and sometime it even close the Touch wiz widget so they have to re appear and load for 4 second . i cant believe they only putted 1gb of ram with all there touchwiz bloarware.
Ram issues
Check what apps are running on the background, i would check primarily things you log into that are always logged in like FB, Gtalk, Skype. although even with all those running you shouldnt have issues, maybe try doing a cache and dalvik cache wipe reboot and check changes.
MY BEST FIX is rooting, flashing an AOSP based rom that normally for me they use 350 to 400mb on a normal basis instead of 550-600mb in a sammy based rom.
mine is usally 800-1g and im constantly clearing memory. I dont get it either.

Jeez 1gb is more than enough
Problem is with the Samsung bloatware. Kies, Remote Controls and all those other services. Delete kiesexe and freeze the Samsung crap inc SVoice..
I see no need to sync to Samsung and Google. The Google services are enough.. The Samsung store is only worth unfreezing for those free offers. The four tracking services ain't needed etc I use Avast to do that etc.
Getting 285M free apx after bootup, same as ICS, on 4.1.2 now. 12 widgets, FB, G+, Fancy widgets, Jorte etc
Also make sure not to run supercharger. It kills multitasking!
Disable all the Bloatware or freeze it using link2sd.

My 2gb i747m really makes use of the extra ram. It not only can handle 50 background apps with stock rom as apposed to 15-20 for the 1gb version (assuming there is enough ram), but it will boot with about 1.6-1.7gb available, about 700mb used, and 1gb free, and will use memory up to about 200mb free before killing apps to make room for new apps. Bottom line, it multitasks like a S.O.B. My opinion based on 2.5 years Android experience...is that 2gb ram helps big time...especially if you do not optimize your system.
If I had the 1gb version, I would consider a lighter rom as some have mentioned, but also the V6 Supercharger app with specific settings to allow maximum multitasking while remaining stable...which might take some experimenting. I would install Titanium Backup Pro and freeze as many non needed apps to prevent them from loading at boot and using up precious ram. Also, for some apps, I use AutoRuns to prevent them from loading at boot time.
Also remember...that some apps will stay in RAM when it's plentiful. But other apps are programed to allow Android to kill them after a certain length of idle time when they haven't been used.
Ram management is fine on the S3.
If you are not happy with it use a task killer, custom rom/kernel and/or supercharger v6 script.
Also if your ram<100 then you should start making complaints.
My free ram is at 120mb-160mb and i'm happy,no lags,no slowdowns, nothing at all.
Android preloads apps in memmory in order to open faster when we launch them.
Free ram really is wasted ram...it cancels multitasking and if you've bough a 600$ phone and can't multitask with it then you're worth of your fate.

The fact that an user has to get task killer and manage memory by him own: FAIL!
I know android pre loads stuff in memory, but it got the priority all wrong.
Why does it keep killing msging, phone and the GODDAMN launcher .
While it never kils the stupid stuff like "Google Book mark Sync", unless you freeze it.
There's no denying that 1gb has crippled S3 badly.
You can claim "Free ram is wasted ram" and throw down links, but at the end of the day it is giving me a bad experience.
Case in point:
1) Launcher Redraw:
Two points to it:
->Bad priority (I'm not sure if it's either a Samsung fault or Android; OOM 6 isn't the way to go).
-> Less ram.
The fact that browsing through play store for 15 mins and then hitting Home button results in launcher redraw is pathetic.
Less ram is the culprit( atleast one of the).
On such an expensive device this is just EPIC FAIL.
Sure we can do Super recharge and try removing the bloatware, but these are quick fixes and doesn't get rid of the main problem.
Not to mention not every one finds all this stuff easy.
The fact that you have to do tweaking on the 'supposedly greatest android phone' to make it work smoothly is an EPIC FAIL.
Custom Roms for an device as expensive as S3, should be there to enhance functionality and increase features. Not to make it works the way it should have out of the box.
2) Sh**ty Multitasking:
Trust me, my iPod touch does better multi tasking that S3 for day to day experience. (I am not an apple troll, btw)
And it doesn't even have a true multitasking and the specs are no where near S3.
When I pause a game, and resume it after an hour it starts from exactly same place . Try that with S3.
Try to use your phone when many apps are getting updated and notification bar is constantly changing.
It'll lag the hell out.
There's no defending to these points.
This is where Apple excels , by giving user everything perfect from out of the box.
Sure you can't do much, but what ever you can, you do it smoothly.
What makes me sad is that Samsung is so close to it, yet they screwed the experience.
And I'm not even going to talk about Contacts and Phone apps.

Sorry but this is complete and utter drivel. Stop quoting websites and Google and start wising up.
If you have a game that needs to run and it uses 100mb and the phone has no free ram it kills something else.
This would be fine if the phone loaded the apps quickly but it doesn't.
Custom ROMs do not fix the lack of ram and neither do any of the memory management scripts.
My phone has around 200mb to 300mb though and it still loads and reloads phone and messaging and browser randomly.
Sgs3 is useless at memory management and anyone who says otherwise is living in a dreamland.
No lags and slowdowns is just blatantly not true as your messaging app and phone app will frequently take up to two seconds to load if you are using any Samsung ROM.

True that.
I have no idea what is stored for 500-600Mb ram if not the important things like Phone, Msg and Launcher.
Useless stuff.
It is just marketing and business politics, Samsung knew that 1GB is not at all future proof but that is exactly what they need so they can sell the Note 2 and the i9305.
And still they sold over 30M i9300 devices.

Man, Android loads that stuff itself based on usage, OOM settings and Minfree values. The other stuff is services that need to run full time so that Kies sync, Location and other Samsung bloat that is really not doing anything most of the time.
Ya I know.
I wonder how can the most important thing, launcher, has an OOM of 6.
Stupid really.
Is it a fault of Android or Samsung messed it up.
In all the galaxy nexus videos I've never seen launcher redraws.
So maybe Samsung messed up for whatever reason.

that remark has been misused greatly by people that can't code for ass and fail at memory optimisation.
It was originally in reference to the Superfetch feature in Vista/7 storing frequently accessed data in ram for faster application startup. It wasn't meant to be applied to applications that use huge amounts of memory for no good reason.
much of Androids poor memory management is Java related, who knows, maybe Google will get a clue and dump the Dalvik VM eventually for a native operating system.

Maybe the reason why Samusng put 3gb of RAM on this phone is because the software is so bloated?

That's normal, and infact good.
When you close an application, it leaves a bit of footprint in the RAM. So when you open it the next time, it opens faster. Incase the RAM starts running out, android removes the earlier apps from it.
Stop blaming Sammy for just about everything.

Is it safe to use these app killer things or should we just let Android take care of it automatically? I thought I read somewhere that these things are bad and can make corruption?
Over 90%? I rarely go past 50%... Perks of running CM11
I rarely go past 50 and I use a TW based ROM..

Might wanna check what apps you are using and have installed. Uninstall apps you don't use etc.
If you have root you can freeze apps you never use and I disagree it doesn't affect the system performance. On a boot up just about every application loads into memory and that's plain stupid, since most of those apps I never ever use. I was actually shocked when I looked at application manager and everything was loaded into memory. It was main reason I rooted my phone, to freeze all the garbage and bloat on my phone. You can also delete some of the stuff, but it gets little complicated if you delete wrong app and then other things don't work no more. I don't know if they load all programs into memory because of "just in time" compiler, another idiotic idea, why compile program once, when we can compile and waste time, every time we start the program. When new, my phone would use about 70% of memory right from the boot and would go to 90% over time, now I freeze just the most obvious stuff and start at 40% memory load. There is a spreadsheet listing all apps, what they do if they can be safely removed, it could help you get better control of your phone.

Which spreadsheet do you mean? Is it an accurate spreadsheet as to what we can freeze? Oh, do you need root to freeze?

I've just recently installed boot manager(requires root + xposed framework) to combat this very problem. It doesn't stop system apps from starting just user downloaded ones. TBH I haven't noticed any effect on the battery or the speed of the phone. Just when I restart, the phone has more free memory.

I was on 4.3 MJ1 rooted and every day I would go up to 90% as it would notify me on the bar to clean.
Now I'm on 4.4 NA6 rooted and I don't get the popup anymore, the 340mb RAM bump is quite useful.

here is the spreadsheet listing apps, what they do and if they're safe to remove or freeze, it is not complete but good starting point. Just be careful, don't touch stuff you're not sure about.

Since Google, just like Crapple thinks all their users are idiots and should be saved from themselves, yeah you need to root to just do anything on your phone. You can go to Application manager and force close programs you don't use without root but:
1. you need to do it every time phone starts one by one
2. some programs will restart by themselves anyway
When you freeze, you do it once and that's it. ROM Toolbox has pretty much all you need.
As far as 4.4 goes, yep you may get some RAM back but pretty much loose access to your SD card, if you have one, something like going from shower into the rain

MicroSD works on mine. Maybe its because of different variants. But I run custom ROM X-Note 8.0, and most of my media is in MicroSD.

KK introduces new permission for SD card usage that breaks writing to SD for most 3rd party apps, you can fix it if you're rooted or run custom ROM, like above poster, but I don't think there is a way to root KK without tripping Knox flag and so you may be loosing your warranty.
I'm rooted on 4.3 and my flag is x0, so for me this is the way it will have to stay.

Just to add to this.
Here's another app I've been using to clear ram.
Advanced Task Cleaner Pro (doesn't require root)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bright.taskcleaner
The advantage this app has over the regular way of clearing ram is that you can create an auto-kill list, which will stop apps from reloading back into the memory after being killed. It will show system as well as user apps and processes currently running.
Digging through the settings there's also a setting to clear ram on system startup(non-root alt to boot manager)
I myself have never got the "full or almost full" memory notification, so I quess I've never maxed out the ram. I think most of these memory/app killing apps(including the one above) are aimed at low and middle tier mobiles which don't have sufficient memory to cope with multitasking and background processes, without stuttering and slowing to a halt.
Since my battery life is good, and I'm more than happy with the phone's speed, I haven't got a real need to clear the memory all the time. I have a habbit of closing apps after using them, although leaving apps in the background and/or not clearing memory after closing will result in faster opening times. There are quite a few claims that these ram killer apps save massive amounts of battery and what not, from my end I don't see this, although its important to check for yourself and come to you own conclusions.

[Q] Why is my S5 sluggish?

I got my S5 nearly a week ago now and I am not overly impressed. When I signed into my Google account it never auto installed my apps and I still haven't got around to it so only minimum apps installed, I have installed Clean Master and its constantly reporting slowness and to boost etc. Put it this way when I press the home button the home screen redraws most of the time, I had similar issues on my old Moto G, ram usage was nearly always full and its the same with the S5. Every thing seems slower than my Moto G which ran stock android, the camera esperically is slow.
Any ideas? I put it down to TW
My phone doesn't act like that, I don't use any apps like clean master either. Since you don't have all of your apps reinstalled do a factory reset. Maybe you have a lemon, maybe just glitches.
Get that clean master garbage off your phone, will do more harm than good.

Yeah Cleanmaster is garbage. I use CCleaner on mine and my S5 runs smooth. Also what ever you do, don't use Advanced Task Killer.

Agreed
Got to admit the GS5 is pretty poor when it comes to RAM usage. Mine is generally idling at about 1.10 GB and i don't have alot of apps installed as i only started using it this week. My GS3LTE was usually idling at around 800MB.
Your comparing phones separated by years and completely different hardware and functionality. Why would you expect them to be remotely the same as far as RAM usage?
I uninstalled Clean master and installed Nova, yes it has helped, I don't know I think I expected this phone to be blazing fast and its not, I think that might just be Android though.

I don't expect them to be similar, my point was surely RAM usage should get better with progress not worse., especially when the S5 mentioned is basically still stock and the G3 was two years old, and thus filled with apps that were using said RAM. Surly background usage shouldn't be so high straight out the box.
I understand what you are saying, but the s5 has more ram so Samsung was able to add more bloat and Samsung apps. The only way to reduce ram usage is to debloat your phone.

Nah my GS3 was the LTE version which had the same amount of RAM as the S5, ie 2GB.
Been considering removing all the bloatware, took a few of the service provider apps off and a couple of Google apps so far, but it's something I have to look into more before I get a bit too delete happy with it. Need to find a thread with a decent guide to what you can and can't delete. Don't want to brick my brand new phone.
Even with Bloatware though, it really shouldn't be a high as it is, when, like i said, my GS3 was idling at 200MB less and was loaded with apps.
There is a list here somewhere of apk's that are safe to remove. There are quite a few apps that the s3 didn't have that run in the background.

I have a list of things like Amazon, Amazon music, Pinterest, that I don't use but I can't uninstall without root and they are running in the background.
I am not having this issue, even when i was on stock it didn't seem bad(to me at least), i am on a rom and I have greenify and this that and the other, and i can idle with almost 600 or 800 free.

Are you sure that is stock Android on your K8?
There is not any root method at least not here, only for 2016 model, I doubt it will work with 2017, it will probably harm device.
However it can be possible that phone is lagging it's not flagship but it's not weak device my 2016 K8 works very well. Would you mind to explain lag and when it happened?

Its not exactly stock android but the design kind of is. My mom is using the k8 2016 and its way faster than my 2017 version. i figured out the lag issue is because android system itself is taking up 800 mb (this is without me installing anything at all. basically after i formatted i checked and it was 800 mb) and the ram is 1.4 gb so only 400 ish mb remains or 500 which makes it really slow. Also sorry for the really fast reply :3 didn't have an internet connection for a while.

I don't think I understand you or you don't understand something. I have 2016. K8 and system is taking up 2.6 GB and I have 1.5 GB of RAM so not ever will all system will go in RAM it's not even possible. Are you talking about 800 mb of RAM is taken by system? 700 MB is fine for apps except ones who need a large chunk of RAM, but even then Android will push out something out of RAM to make place for that app. Check for OTA updates, i still doubt phone is lagging, I mean it is budget phone but still..

To be honest I think something isn't right here. Because that is not how LG phone tiles look like, indeed this look like pure Android without UX on top of it, I don't know if LG started shipping phones with pure Android on them or is something else, would you mind go to settings and take screenshot of software info page?
However on these screenshots you provided it's average use in last x hours(to me there shows that chrome use 2.9 GB which is not possible), to see current go to developer options and to "running services.
It is K8 2017, idk why LG decided using stock-ish UI instead UX4.0/5.0 like K10 2017. It has the same (if not better) spect as 2016 version, and I don't know what causes the lag. Either some junk app/screen overlay app/bad software optimization.
From my experience, 2016 version has performance problem with some screen overlay apps like easy touch, bluelight filter, etc. But even on low ram apps still runs quite smooth.

Yeah I see, I did some digging and in YouTube there is two kinds one with UX and one without it, maybe I'm mistaking maybe both are stock I'm not sure how nougat under UX looks like. However they released k8 2017 and mediatek version runs nougat as I can understand (Russian edition and some other countries) and qcom versions runs nougat. LG never fails to amaze me with their actions, I mean seriously?
Any update in this tread? I've bought k8 2017 just a few hours ago. Besides the lag it also have this pop up ads which i cant get rid of even after removing their free apps.

Wait, so you bought brand new phone and it started to show popup ads, you didn't install any apps? I can't believe what some carriers do to the phones. Wait what stock browser? LG browser? I didn't seen it a long time on LG phones the seems to be moved to chrome. If it isn't new than you should flash stock firmware. Model number: LG-X240k .I don't think it's the carrier's fault because I bought the phone in an LG store it self. The UI is the same as op. I also notice that Android OS (Android 6.0) takes about 900mb~ of memory without any running apps I have J5 prime with the same os only take about 300-400mb.

Well you are right it's not up to carrier because you didn't bought phone from them so it's not under contract. It seems they have ****ed up heavily.
Don't look on that, that information is not reliable.
My mom got this phone too, just a couple of days. She asked me to install facebook and messenger app. To be estimated, I finished it for almost two hours. Becuase I need to install shareit and play services as well before shareit will work. Damn phone very laggy or may I say very slow. One app took more than 3 to 5 mins to finish. She got LG-X240.

Pretty sure, mine is K350K it lags a lot when scrolling on recent menu/multitask manager/whatever you called it is which is painful. Must be some lazy ass rom developer from my country's model. Hell not even any updates since sep-15 2017 (v10d), which is worse btw coz system root cannot be modified. This phone is officially abandoned I believe.

LOL, I even play DriftSpirits and Dirt Rally with mine while using an app called "Dimmer" (I stopped using Bluelight filter because it had ads) and I do have a lower fps while using it, but its nothing terrible.
About updates, I dont update since I installed its day one firmware and rooted it, so I can't tell if mine's still gets updates or not.
My main problem with my k350z is that I can't write or delete anything on my SDcard since I started using link2sd.
since then, I had to use my PC every time I need to manage my files.

Is there any bugs in doing it? I think it might not be a good idea since my 32gb card is a class 4.
would you help me in doing it? I already know how to do it but it is good to have someone that did it near in case I screw my phone up.
