I didn't think this was possible, but I got a replacement Pixel XL from Google months ago (They even had to manually add the phone to their network since it was from Google) to replace my VZW Pixel XL. I had no problems, OEM unlocking toggle was always enabled. Recently I went to OP3, and was trying to pass the Safetynet check and as a troubleshooting step I locked the BL thinking I could unlock it again since I did NOT have a VZW Pixel XL. To my surprise I'm now SOL, and unable to unlock it now it appears VZW is checking their IMEIs and rather the Pixel is from them or not they'll disable OEM unlocking on Android 8

Yeah it was modified but I was trying use Magisk for the root then lock the BL to see if that would make it pass. Just messing around not expecting to be locked out like I had a VZW device
I feel like an idiot I bought mine 3 days ago and it was on 7.1 . I put my VZW sim In and it just went right into the update I'm so pissed it did that.. I really wanted to run Pure Nexus.
I'll put $25 in toward the bounty.

I wouldn't mind putting cash down either but when its a workaround and the same device being sold without a permanently locked BL, its gonna be super tough for a dev to think its worth it. Most likely we'll have to get new devices from Google....somehow

Like Bobby janow said, it's been tried and it doesn't work. I'm with TMO now and it is just as locked down as ever. But this is the first time I'm satisfied with stock and don't care about unlocking it. If I didn't like it, I'd sell this one and buy the GPE.

Verizon doesn't lock down Google Store bought Pixels. I had my Pixel on Verizon for months and never had an issue.
If you phone IS malfunctioning in any way (cannot unlock bootloader), you should have no issue getting a replacement from Google.

Technically my phone was a warranty replacement from Google. The initial purchase was from Verizon then Google replaced it with theirs. That still should hold true tho

And to that I'll add when I received mine it took 2 days to activate because they said since it was from Google it had NOT been added to their network. They had to add the phone by IMEI manually then activate. I believe I was one of the first to report this but it happens if you get a Google RMA.

So the way I figure it the devices all come from Google. When devices are shipped directly to Verizon as they scan them into their system. Devices that come directly from Google don't get that chance to be populated in their system because they have no manifest or physical interaction with the device.
How is your device labelled in your account information?

You can view your devices from the verizon webpage. When you log in and look at your account, there is likely a page for device info.

I was just on the Verizon Wireless site looking at the new Nexus 6 that was released today and it prompted a live chat with a representative. I decided to go ahead and ask her if the device was locked and if so, did it support Fastboot OEM Unlock. She said went to check with her tech team and they confirmed that it was able to be unlocked with that method. Finally, and unlocked bootloader

I'm really hoping that someone who's buying the phone from Verizon soon can confirm on here if this is true for sure. I won't be upgrading for a couple months but I'm really curious!
They'll tell you anything you want to hear to get you to buy something.

The galaxy nexus was, right? Is Verizon even getting a unique part number?

To anyone doubting.. Every single Nexus 6, regardless of where you bought it, will be bootloader unlockable with fastboot oem unlock. End of speculation.
I think the biggest question is will there be an OEM partition filled with a bunch of garbage like the ATT version.

What he said. A Nexus is a Nexus and will always have an easy unlockable bootloader. I've been tinkering with Androids for many years and this one is written in stone, Verion can do nothing to change it.
I should find out by Thursday.
All verizon lte phones are sim unlocked and usually have global bands. ATT is the absolute worst carrier.
Apparently Google can "forget" to register devices on a carriers which will mean there will be a 1 to 4 days activation time after you get your phone. If you had a backup device and turn it off before you power on your Pixel you got in the mail, then power on your Pixel it will not activate. Mine kept saying something about needing better coverage to activate. Then it said an error happened during activation and I needed to call customer care. So basically they have to put in a request to Google to activate the IMEI on Verizon's network (Make sure you give them the right IMEI & SIM #) which will take some time. The associates I spoke to didn't seem like it was a rare occurrence for manufacturer warranty replacements.
Doesn't really make sense to me. Why would Google need to activate a device on a Verizon network? Think about it.
In the past I've heard of newer Nexus devices not having their IMEI registered on CDMA networks so the said phone couldn't be activated but that was a Carrier issue and was fixed after they added it to their network.
Seems to me that the Verizon rep lied to you and placed the blame on Google when in fact it's Verizon's fault. They want you on their version on the Pixel with a lockable bootloader anyway.
Don't always believe customer reps, they will say anything and everything to avoid a conflict and get you off the phone quicker.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
You take your SIM card out, put it in the new phone and go. There is no activation anymore like the olden days of CDMA phones. The only reason it would need "activated" would be if the IMEI was blacklisted or flagged as stolen, and I doubt Google is shipping out stolen/flagged phones.

And it'll do the exact same thing if it was a previously activated phone that was factory reset. I don't know what is doing, but it isn't activating of you're just swapping SIM cards. In that case, registering on the network would probably be more accurate.

In the bootloader, the code at the bottom will say whether the phone is locked or not. Also, the OEM unlocking switch in Dev options will be tinted out so you are not able to unlock the bootloader. An unlocked Pixel gives this ability (as shown).

it has nothing to do with firmware version. if it's network unlocked so is the bootloader toggle.
I had to warranty return my Pixel, I now get OEM option on Dev menu
Just got my EE Pixel unlocked, thanks for the info.
I filled out the online form for the unlock but nothing happened within 10 days. Phoned EE they said they have a few issues with it but they would put it through for me now would take 24 -48 hours. I decided to run a basic packet logger to see what happens when the device unlocks, It shows Device Setup getting a connection from afwprovisioning-pa.googleapis.com on port 443 for 42ms then another after to Google Play Services from cloudconfig.googleapis.com on port 443 for 117ms, then a notification came up from Device Setup saying "Carrier lock removed, The device can now be used on any network", I checked OEM unlock and I am now able to toggle it on and off.
Its a shame I couldn't get any more info from the packet capture but being non root was the best I could do, as i have no wifi card in desktop so couldn't do a mitm and wireshark it. I hope this helps or at least gives some more info on what happens when the device is carrier unlocked.

That is awesome, real proof it is Google's servers. Thank you, I know there is a thanks button but this info is pretty cool.
I'm pretty much sold on the thing, since I can unload my 3T at the same time--but a few questions first.
1: Can anyone test Samsung gear watches with the phone? I've read Samsung pay only works if you sideload the gear app, but would prefer it working 100% since I plan on staying unrooted.
2: VPNs have caused some issues on past carrier phones, basically using hotspot data rather than regular data. Can anyone just run a quick test to make sure this isn't the case? Mostly for use of Blokada.
3: Does RCS work? I know TMobile was rolling it out by device, but it seems this would be the perfect time to add it with the 6T.
Thanks!

1. Setup my gear s3 and it works perfectly. Everything is sideloaded as you install from the galaxy Wearable app.
2. This device already seems to have a private VPN set up as default, didn't touch it but it gives you the option to add.
3. RCS I'm assuming does not work and depends on tmobile actually activating them over an OTA update.

So, can someone confirm who is correct with this because i wont like my brother to buy me the phone and then cant use it because of locked sim..

I guess the 300 dollars goes towards savings on the bill. I read comments on here saying even if you buy the phone from TMobile, in order to "buy it outright" you still have to pay the full price of the phone. I need an unlocked bootloader and root so I guess I'll just pay OP directly.

Yeah it's really only a good deal if you're already or going to stay a T-Mobile customer. You wait a couple of months for the billing discount to kick in and you pay off your device in full. After that you'll still get your discount every month and you'll be able to unlock your sim card and unlock your bootloader.

I am a TMobile customer and plan on staying with them. Flashing the latest updates is kind of a big deal to me....I've been a Nexus/pixel user for years and am not use to being locked down by carrier restrictions when it comes to unlocking devices. I just don't feel like dealing with the clutter and hassle of having sift through the carrier's rules before doing what I want with my phone.

I agree, and I'm the exact same way. I've been on T-Mobile forever and have had a Nexus device since the Nexus 4. I had a Galaxy 4 for work and hated it.
This is my first carrier device pretty much ever. Before the Nexus 4 I was using the HTC HD2 and before that I was using Palm Windows and Palm OS devices.
Pretty much the way I see it is if this is too much of a pain, I can always sell it and go with my original plan of getting a used Pixel 2 XL on swappa.
I'll give it a chance. The price was just too good to pass. And I'm fairly confident in OP's laziness on locking down this phone. I have a feeling it will be pretty simple to swap over to the international rom, and if not, at most we'll have to wait a day for someone to repack the official rom removing the modem and/or bootloader. And if not, on to swappa it goes.
I got an S10+ as a gift. I asked T-Mobile support to unlock it and they said no problem and that it would take 72 hours.
Well it's been over a week and I've been back and forth with support trying everything up to and including a factory reset all with no luck. They're now saying that they've "exhausted their efforts" and that *some phones can't be unlocked".
I've never experienced this with support before and am not sure what to do next. I'm pretty sure Samsung is just going to refer me back to the carrier if I try them. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

How do you know it's still locked?
Do you have an account with T-Mobile? Contact their Twitter at TMobile help they are usually way more helpful then calling or chatting thru their website and I've personally unlocked dozens of phones like that, paid off or not.

When I go to Settings and click "Permanent Unlock" I get an error message *Your phone isn't elligible to be unlocked. Reason code: 999".
However, you're right that I haven't tried to put in a different SIM maybe it already unlocked?

If it is a Tmobile branded phone version then it is locked. Tmobile can unlock it as long as your account is 3+ month old and in good standing I think.

Again, their support said they entered it in the system to unlock and it's not working so I don't know what to do next. It's a weird position to be in.
It's my understanding that they used to unlock with an app, but that now it's built into the firmware? In any case, can't get it to work and they have literally said there's nothing else they can do which is really strange.

If the person that gifted it to you got it from T-mobile store then it would be quick, but if they got it from elsewhere, T-mobile always has trouble finding that order and IMEI and takes forever to actually unlock it.

It's directly from T-Mobile, and I gave them a screen shot of the IMEI which they confirmed over and over.
If they can't unlock it, can a third party?
No one knows?

Try with a non T-mobile SIM and if it is still locked, take it to the T-mobile store and have them call customer service to unlock. This way the store representative can let them know it is in fact locked.

Having the same issue with TMobile always get my phones unlocked via Twitter s8, note8, s9, note 9, onplus 6t all on JOD one thing they all had in common was the unlock app with the new S10 they having build in into the system and I have spend 1 month trying to unlock it even have gotten the phone replaced thinking it was defective , T-Mobile chat has said multiple times they did a override to unlock and still nothing I feel like there is an issue with the new build in unlock process vs the unlock app
Do we know if we can use a code to unlock the phone with different firmware? Are we stuck using T-Mobile's unlock protocol/app?

That's my experience too... there's no app and T-Mobile seems to have no solution.
So what do we do now?

I traded in the S10+ to the LG g8 just to make sure is the phone since the LG still has the unlock app I'll test and see
Edit: asked TMobile via Twitter for the unlock and when through the app , pressed permanent unlock and walla
I was able to successfully unlock my phone through T-Mobile on twitter. They just need your IMEI and will whitelist it. There is no unlock app anymore. I did have to chat with another rep however because the first rep that tried to help me did something wrong on their end and they tried to tell me to use the unlock app which the S10's don't have.
Locking a device with zero EIP balance should be illegal.
I went through this when I bought a 128GB S6 Edge outright. The phone was paid in full at the store yet they wanted me to wait 40 days to unlock it. I tried 3rd party unlockers and they said they couldn't unlock it. (all attempts with codes failed)
It was a real cluster-f.
I just buy my phones from ebay now. No carrier junk or branding and none of this nonsense either. Paypal is great if a seller tries to jerk you around. Fortunately I haven't had any problems.

Yeah their training is clearly a little behind, but I went through their escalations team and everything and they literally said the had "exhausted all efforts" and added that "some phones can't be unlocked". How crazy is that?
So my current question is... are there still third party unlocks possible?
