Is anyone else noticing brightness issues with the OnePlus 5? For me it goes way too dark a lot of times in a lit room and goes all the way down in a dark room. It just seems like it's always favoring the lower brightness. I'm getting fed up wth having to manually adjust it.
I had the OnePlus 3T and it didn't behave this way.
Anyone else?
Yeah, OnePlus seems to have some work to do on their brightness curve.

has been fixed with 4.5.5 for me
Has anyone looked into the screen_auto_brightness_adj setting in AutoTools custom settings? You can modify this value.....but I was curious if anyone has tried this to fix it.

Not sure what this means.
Anyway, problem has been resolved by returning the phone.

Oh I'm sorry.. I meant that there was a thread already in place for this issue.. - and you returned the phone? What did you go back to? Please tell me not Sam suck or icrap
Did you set it on auto?
I am at the moment testing disabling content adaptive backlight. So far I am liking the behaviour of automatic screen brightness.
I downloaded MyAndroidTools from PlayStore. I changed the tab position on these three locations:
1. [Service>System>Content Adaptive Backlight Settings>CABLService]
2. [Broadcast Receiver>System>Content Adaptive Backlight Settings>CABLReceiver]
3. [Activity>System>Content Adaptive Backlight Settings>CABLPreferences]
This tool needs ROOT to work.
Related
And more specifically and as far as I can tell, if the phone is freshly booted then the functions listed above work. However, after several hours on I go to adjust the brightness and the screen does NOT change its brightness no matter whether i set auto-brightness or adjust it manually.
Let me preface this topic and let you all know that I still have my stock screen protectors attached and I've installed the light flow app if that matters.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I such at naming titles.
same here, just wiped. no clue what's causing it
Same for me I just noticed this. Hope its something fixable in an update.

Have you tried wiping? I haven't had any issue since
Ugh never mind, brightness got stuck again.
Wow am i glad to have found this thread, i have been battling this problem since day one with this phone, and i have been trying to track it down with usb debugging but have been unsuccessful. What happens is that my screen will randomly shut off and be non responsive for 5 seconds and when i can turn the screen back on, i can no longer adjust the brightness and only a reboot will solve the issue. It also occurs when i am not using the phone so i think it is a hardware issue but i am uncertain.
Things i have tried to fix it:
Factory reset
Fastboot flash factory image
Flash cutom ROM & Kernel
Didn't realize it before but yes, my screen randomly turns off, then the brightness gets stuck. Thought it was timing out

You guys use auto brightness? Maybe that might be it
This happens to me occasionally too, haven't been able to determine what triggers it. It's almost as much fun as the magical battery levels. Plugged in the other day, went from 4% to 100% in a nano second.
interesting...my auto and slider work just fine
ugh still getting this problem daily. does't matter if auto brightness is on
There is no solid way to reproduce the problem, so I am willing to bet its a hardware issue. I will be calling T-Mobile this week to replace it.

Of the people who are experiencing it, how many have a notification drawer widget (Widgetsoid, Power Controls, et al?) and have a brightness toggle on it?
I've removed brightness from Widgetsoid to see if it's a conflict of some sort.

Might be a hardware issue? If it was software I think a lot of people would be complaining about this.
Edit: ugh as I was typing this post, screen flashed and turned off with broken brightness. I just rebooted like 5 min ago too

Not sure. Here's one report on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40378
Edit: could just as easily be a OS issue, if it decides to stop polling the light sensor for some reason. Many people have the battery bug as well, which seems to stop polling the battery for some reason.
I have noticed my screen changing brightness depending on how bright the picture is on the page. A good example is reddit, when on the home page the screen slowly steps up its brightness so far, after clicking a link to an image or other dark website the screen slowly steps down the brightness. It does this regardless of what the screen brightness is set at as I have tried different values and on auto and it always does it. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?
Thanks,
Mike.

Possibly not a solution, but I use this free app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDMsInNvZnQua2lub2tvLnNldGJyaWdodG5lc3MiXQ..
I set mine to 20% and just leave it alone, I never use auto.
I have the same problem at Paranoidandroid 2.99.
None of the above worked.
Anyone else have an idea?
Bump, still got the problem
I think the TV light makes a difference to the Nexus 7 brightness, as the TV alternates between bright and dark lighting.
I read my Nexus 7 without glasses, and so I can hold it very close to my face thanks to my short sightedness. This means the Nexus 7 screen light reflects off my face and affects the autobrightness. I suspect that black warpaint smeared on my face might be a solution.
But the real solution should be simple - Google need to average out their sensor readings and transition screen brightness changes smoothly and less frequently.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Not sure if it will help, I use
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.pruss.superdim
Unfortunately none of these solutions have worked.
It does not seem to matter whether or not the screen is close to my face and thus sees the reflection, I can do it in a constantly bright room with nothing in front of the device and I still have this weird change in brightness.
Any more ideas?
Thanks,
Mike.

Hi, MikeyUK...
I had the same problem myself for a long time, until I stumbled on this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815414
It describes the cause, and offers a solution... unfortunately, it does require you to be rooted though,.. but it worked, (at least, it works for me)... no more screen brightness fluctuations.

Thanks for the response. However, I would like to keep my device unrooted if at all possible. At this rate I might try and return it to the store because it is not right. Another family member has the same device with no problem which makes me a little bit suspicious.
Thanks,
Mike.
Evening all,
I've had my nexus 4 for around a month now and I've only just noticed that the Auto Brightness does not work what so ever. It's set to automatic as stated - but no matter what the surrounding light is - it just never changes!
I've scouted the forum and can only see people stating other problems with there Auto Brightness, none that are relevant to mine. But I do apologise if it has been mentioned before, I just couldn't find it.
Thanks for the help.
Jay.
I used to use Velis Autobrightness before I moved to CM and a Custom kernel.
It's free in the store. You can adjust the sensitivity as well so it changes more/less instantly.

You can try downloading lux from the play store and see if that works. It can tell you how much light your ambient sensor is reading. If auto brightness works with lux, it's a software bug so flash a custom rom or re flash your rom. If lux says your ambient sensor doesn't read different values, you probably have a defective sensor.
Light sensor not working or a system issue?
hey guys i noticed a couple of days ago that my auto brightness is not working as it used to i.e. it doesnt change at all....i figured that this might be a system software issue so i tried a couple of auto brightness apps and one of them worked for like half a day and now even that wont change the brightness at all...now im worried that there is a problem with my ambient light sensor!!! can someone please help me with this??!! thanks!!!!

I have the same issue Jay. I can't get any help with it either....i tried a couple of autobrightness apps from the play store and one of them worked for half a day and then even that stopped working...so im in a dilemma of whether it's the system software or the phone's sensor which is the problem. Let me know if you find something out... thanks
Hi guys I have a problem on my s8.
Auto brightness always worked for me, but I just noticed that now it stopped working at all. Like, usually if i set brightness to max and then set autobrightness on, it auto reduces it to like 25%, meanwhile now it doesnt change the brightness ever. I have the feeling that auto brightness stopped working after i installed the last patch with odin (the UK unbranded one) since I patched it like 4 days ago and in the past weeks it worked fine. I dont think its a hardware problem because I tried sensor box app and in a black room it shows 0 while in a light one it goes to over 100 and next to a lamp over 2000.
Any idea what could be the problem? And how to fix it? I really would hate to do a hard reset since i'd lose too much stuff... could it be the patch that has a bug? Thanks in advance!

I have similar issue with my phone after latest update. I did hard reset without luck. All we have to do is to wait until new patch will be released and hopefully fix this issue. Regards

I'm really surprised that Samsung will go live with a firmware with bugs like this, I guess they really dont test anything.
I think is the same for me ! With AQG5 firmware (the last one) when you change the brightness with auto brightness on, the phone memorise the setting with the ambiant light condition : you can see it by doing the following : turn auto brightness on and then set brightness up or down. Then uncheck auto brightness of and place the curser at the opposite. At last put auto brightness back on and the brightness will jump where you put it before like the phone memorised it.
Also with auto brightness on you can put your thumb on the sensor in the upper left side of the phone to simulate darkness. The screens goes darker and as soon you remove your thonger he goes lighter.
I dont understand why just some of us have this problem. They should released a fix soon because its really annoying not to have it working, I dont want to have to wait a month or more like this...
It pissed me off so I downgraded to AQF7 : the issue is now gone =)
Same thing over here!
The AQF7 update was by far the best and most stable one to date. Now my home button problem is back and lag also!
Before it I had home button issues with response and lag whille scrolling. Whit the current update everything came back!
Samsung really needs to get their s*** together!
Well... when they released the AQH3 in the changelog it said they fixed the auto brightness thingie, yet I just installed it and guess what? I still have the same problem. Auto brightness still doesnt work, like in the firmware that came out a month ago.
Anyone else tested it? What the **** is Samsung doing?
No one tried yet?
I agree with you, the autobrightness still doesn't work.

Any way to fix this? I am using an app called lux, but it's not perfect, still better than nothing
I have the same problem. I saw another thread that said it's not a bug. They made it that it learns your patterns, so it won't change when you hit the auto brightness button, but it still does become brighter when you go outside, and dimmer when you go inside.
I'm not happy with it though, as it worked perfectly for me before this update, and this is just very annoying.

What build/baseband/firmware are you running?
Hi guys,
I have to fire 7 in tablets both bought at the same time from same place. Both are running the same Lineage-12.1 ROM (12.1-20170802-Unofficial-ford)
But for some reason when i keep them side by side one of them has a very dull screen brightness where as the other is nice and visible. I am not sure if this has to do with the hardware or some missing setting in the one that is dull. I tried making both 100% bright from the upper menu but the screen difference is still the same.
The bottom image is the brighter one. Any idea if some setting somewhere is causing this?

On checking further I noticed that the tablet which is showing dull color seems to show the exact same even when I adjust the brightness slider in the top menu. When the slider is on 0 or 100% its the same. that tells me that the software slider is somehow broken?

Known kernel issue with custom ROMs. Symptoms typically rectified with a reboot. If no joy try a full power down with a 5 sec pause before restarting.

Sorry for the late response Davey126, for some reason it didn't post my reply when I used my cell phone the other day. I tried to restart a few times but still have the same screen issue the brightness controls dont respond. Will upgrading to the latest release help with this issue? Is there any other fix to permanently fix the problem?
Thanks for your help.

Probably not. Likely have to sideload a full version of FireOS to refresh/replace the kernel - then start over. There is no known 'fix' for the problem other than keeping memory load to a minimum (or using the swap tweaks that I outlined elsewhere).
