Hi guys I have a problem on my s8.
Auto brightness always worked for me, but I just noticed that now it stopped working at all. Like, usually if i set brightness to max and then set autobrightness on, it auto reduces it to like 25%, meanwhile now it doesnt change the brightness ever. I have the feeling that auto brightness stopped working after i installed the last patch with odin (the UK unbranded one) since I patched it like 4 days ago and in the past weeks it worked fine. I dont think its a hardware problem because I tried sensor box app and in a black room it shows 0 while in a light one it goes to over 100 and next to a lamp over 2000.
Any idea what could be the problem? And how to fix it? I really would hate to do a hard reset since i'd lose too much stuff... could it be the patch that has a bug? Thanks in advance!

I have similar issue with my phone after latest update. I did hard reset without luck. All we have to do is to wait until new patch will be released and hopefully fix this issue. Regards

I'm really surprised that Samsung will go live with a firmware with bugs like this, I guess they really dont test anything.
I think is the same for me ! With AQG5 firmware (the last one) when you change the brightness with auto brightness on, the phone memorise the setting with the ambiant light condition : you can see it by doing the following : turn auto brightness on and then set brightness up or down. Then uncheck auto brightness of and place the curser at the opposite. At last put auto brightness back on and the brightness will jump where you put it before like the phone memorised it.
Also with auto brightness on you can put your thumb on the sensor in the upper left side of the phone to simulate darkness. The screens goes darker and as soon you remove your thonger he goes lighter.
I dont understand why just some of us have this problem. They should released a fix soon because its really annoying not to have it working, I dont want to have to wait a month or more like this...
It pissed me off so I downgraded to AQF7 : the issue is now gone =)
Same thing over here!
The AQF7 update was by far the best and most stable one to date. Now my home button problem is back and lag also!
Before it I had home button issues with response and lag whille scrolling. Whit the current update everything came back!
Samsung really needs to get their s*** together!
Well... when they released the AQH3 in the changelog it said they fixed the auto brightness thingie, yet I just installed it and guess what? I still have the same problem. Auto brightness still doesnt work, like in the firmware that came out a month ago.
Anyone else tested it? What the **** is Samsung doing?
No one tried yet?
I agree with you, the autobrightness still doesn't work.

Any way to fix this? I am using an app called lux, but it's not perfect, still better than nothing
I have the same problem. I saw another thread that said it's not a bug. They made it that it learns your patterns, so it won't change when you hit the auto brightness button, but it still does become brighter when you go outside, and dimmer when you go inside.
I'm not happy with it though, as it worked perfectly for me before this update, and this is just very annoying.

not the auto backlight is the only issue , but the backlight driver aswell , it dosn't dim backlight gradually when not used for some time , it only shuts the screen off
Personally,I would love to know if a CIFS module is being looked at or if Bluetooth HID will be added to GIT kernel.
Would be nice to have a TO DO page to check that stuff.

You can follow twitter @ http://twitter.com/htc_linux and http://twitter.com/CotullaCode
Cotulla's twitter says september will be a great month..
Christmas might come early this year..
Oh btw; the backlight not going auto is courtesy of the ambient light sensor driver not being present.. Don't think it is high on the priority list atm.. Still lots of other bugs to go, including the touchscreen/G-sensor problem.
Personally would like to see that one fixed first, because that's something that's actually more useful than auto-backlight adjustment if you ask me.
Hi,
I've experienced that after update to 2.3.3 automatic brightness is not working anymore on my Nexus. I checked with GPS Status and it is confirmed, brightness can't go up than 160 lux, even if I hold it under strong light. (it is only 10 or 160 lux)
Has anybody experience the same or is this my problem only?
thanks for responses.
[edit]
I've managed after a restart to reach higher value (2600 lux), but I still don't see to change the level of brightness during moving the phone between dark and light.. Am I too fast now? I remember, I don't have problem with this before 2.3.3
[edit2]
sorry, I figured out. If I hold it under very strong light, brightness changes, but remains on higher value until I turn off/on the display again. Is it normal?
Mine works better than before actually. Maybe wipping everything and reflashing the ROM can fix it.

thanks for the advice. Can I reflash 2.3.3. onto 2.3.3 without any problem?
yours is changing dinamically moving between dark and lighter conditions?
hey guys!
im a proud owner of a n7 since tuesday.
setup:
after the first setup of the n7 i unlocked the bootloader and flashed superuser. (did setup again after unlocking bootloader)
problem:
the screen turns off after a few minutes playing with the device and can not be started again.
turned out that the problem was the brightness (i was scared to have bricked it )
i could reflash the factory image, and set the brightness to manual setup. (rooted again, because factory image did not fix the problem)
the device works fine (except of some flickering and auto brightness), but its annoying.
it seems that some more owner of a nexus 7 have this issue.
see the folowing youtube video:
*/watch?v=enzWLwVKSHs
(sry, im not allowed to post links, so just replace the "*" with "youtube.com" )
is there any solution for this issue? (i think its software related, because the manual brightness would also let you disable the whole background lightning)
thanks in advance, lucas
nobody has a fix or a suggestion to fix this issue?
bump
I would return it to Google and get a new one. I had a screen flickering problem as well as image burn and they sent me a new one now problem.

I not think they will send you a brand new one, they just give refurbish. As told me someone, the auto brightness problem is not hardwares problem.

i do also think, it is not hardware related.
so i think, i will wait for a fix.
anybody found a fix already??

After upgrade to 4.2, the problem became more apparent, cycling from dim to a bit brighter every one minute or so in a pretty constant ambient lighting. Called the customer service, told to do a factory reset, did that and the cycling is much less frequent. But factory reset method is too painful: lost all my customizations and files. It got to have a simpler solution, clear some setting property, perhaps.
Evening all,
I've had my nexus 4 for around a month now and I've only just noticed that the Auto Brightness does not work what so ever. It's set to automatic as stated - but no matter what the surrounding light is - it just never changes!
I've scouted the forum and can only see people stating other problems with there Auto Brightness, none that are relevant to mine. But I do apologise if it has been mentioned before, I just couldn't find it.
Thanks for the help.
Jay.
I used to use Velis Autobrightness before I moved to CM and a Custom kernel.
It's free in the store. You can adjust the sensitivity as well so it changes more/less instantly.

You can try downloading lux from the play store and see if that works. It can tell you how much light your ambient sensor is reading. If auto brightness works with lux, it's a software bug so flash a custom rom or re flash your rom. If lux says your ambient sensor doesn't read different values, you probably have a defective sensor.
Light sensor not working or a system issue?
hey guys i noticed a couple of days ago that my auto brightness is not working as it used to i.e. it doesnt change at all....i figured that this might be a system software issue so i tried a couple of auto brightness apps and one of them worked for like half a day and now even that wont change the brightness at all...now im worried that there is a problem with my ambient light sensor!!! can someone please help me with this??!! thanks!!!!

I have the same issue Jay. I can't get any help with it either....i tried a couple of autobrightness apps from the play store and one of them worked for half a day and then even that stopped working...so im in a dilemma of whether it's the system software or the phone's sensor which is the problem. Let me know if you find something out... thanks
Just wondering if anyone has heard if Samsung plans on ever fixing the auto brightness bug that so many of the edge phones are experiencing. I have seen the methods for fixing it by replacing the services file in framework, but do not want to root my phone as of now (not even sure if there is a root out for a SM-G928V yet). Anyone heard anything new? Got a software updated just this morning (10/21/2015) and it did not fix the problem. For anyone who doesn't know, the issue is that even though auto brightness is turned off, the phone screen dims whenever in unlit areas and brightens once light is present. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
i had the same problem and i didnt want to fix it myself for same reason u have and today i tooked back to samsung store and i got new one in return but when i get home i saw this one also has the same problem

That's basically where I'm at now, they want me to bring it in. I will and if they say they'll replace I'll say I want to see the phone to make sure it does not have the glitch. Why they can't just put out a patch is beyond me.
