I have noticed my screen changing brightness depending on how bright the picture is on the page. A good example is reddit, when on the home page the screen slowly steps up its brightness so far, after clicking a link to an image or other dark website the screen slowly steps down the brightness. It does this regardless of what the screen brightness is set at as I have tried different values and on auto and it always does it. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?
Thanks,
Mike.

Possibly not a solution, but I use this free app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDMsInNvZnQua2lub2tvLnNldGJyaWdodG5lc3MiXQ..
I set mine to 20% and just leave it alone, I never use auto.
I have the same problem at Paranoidandroid 2.99.
None of the above worked.
Anyone else have an idea?
Bump, still got the problem
I think the TV light makes a difference to the Nexus 7 brightness, as the TV alternates between bright and dark lighting.
I read my Nexus 7 without glasses, and so I can hold it very close to my face thanks to my short sightedness. This means the Nexus 7 screen light reflects off my face and affects the autobrightness. I suspect that black warpaint smeared on my face might be a solution.
But the real solution should be simple - Google need to average out their sensor readings and transition screen brightness changes smoothly and less frequently.

Not sure if it will help, I use
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.pruss.superdim
Unfortunately none of these solutions have worked.
It does not seem to matter whether or not the screen is close to my face and thus sees the reflection, I can do it in a constantly bright room with nothing in front of the device and I still have this weird change in brightness.
Any more ideas?
Thanks,
Mike.

Hi, MikeyUK...
I had the same problem myself for a long time, until I stumbled on this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815414
It describes the cause, and offers a solution... unfortunately, it does require you to be rooted though,.. but it worked, (at least, it works for me)... no more screen brightness fluctuations.

Thanks for the response. However, I would like to keep my device unrooted if at all possible. At this rate I might try and return it to the store because it is not right. Another family member has the same device with no problem which makes me a little bit suspicious.
Thanks,
Mike.

hey guys!
im a proud owner of a n7 since tuesday.
setup:
after the first setup of the n7 i unlocked the bootloader and flashed superuser. (did setup again after unlocking bootloader)
problem:
the screen turns off after a few minutes playing with the device and can not be started again.
turned out that the problem was the brightness (i was scared to have bricked it )
i could reflash the factory image, and set the brightness to manual setup. (rooted again, because factory image did not fix the problem)
the device works fine (except of some flickering and auto brightness), but its annoying.
it seems that some more owner of a nexus 7 have this issue.
see the folowing youtube video:
*/watch?v=enzWLwVKSHs
(sry, im not allowed to post links, so just replace the "*" with "youtube.com" )
is there any solution for this issue? (i think its software related, because the manual brightness would also let you disable the whole background lightning)
thanks in advance, lucas
nobody has a fix or a suggestion to fix this issue?
bump
I would return it to Google and get a new one. I had a screen flickering problem as well as image burn and they sent me a new one now problem.

I not think they will send you a brand new one, they just give refurbish. As told me someone, the auto brightness problem is not hardwares problem.

i do also think, it is not hardware related.
so i think, i will wait for a fix.
anybody found a fix already??

After upgrade to 4.2, the problem became more apparent, cycling from dim to a bit brighter every one minute or so in a pretty constant ambient lighting. Called the customer service, told to do a factory reset, did that and the cycling is much less frequent. But factory reset method is too painful: lost all my customizations and files. It got to have a simpler solution, clear some setting property, perhaps.
And more specifically and as far as I can tell, if the phone is freshly booted then the functions listed above work. However, after several hours on I go to adjust the brightness and the screen does NOT change its brightness no matter whether i set auto-brightness or adjust it manually.
Let me preface this topic and let you all know that I still have my stock screen protectors attached and I've installed the light flow app if that matters.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I such at naming titles.
same here, just wiped. no clue what's causing it
Same for me I just noticed this. Hope its something fixable in an update.

Have you tried wiping? I haven't had any issue since
Ugh never mind, brightness got stuck again.
Wow am i glad to have found this thread, i have been battling this problem since day one with this phone, and i have been trying to track it down with usb debugging but have been unsuccessful. What happens is that my screen will randomly shut off and be non responsive for 5 seconds and when i can turn the screen back on, i can no longer adjust the brightness and only a reboot will solve the issue. It also occurs when i am not using the phone so i think it is a hardware issue but i am uncertain.
Things i have tried to fix it:
Factory reset
Fastboot flash factory image
Flash cutom ROM & Kernel
Didn't realize it before but yes, my screen randomly turns off, then the brightness gets stuck. Thought it was timing out

You guys use auto brightness? Maybe that might be it
This happens to me occasionally too, haven't been able to determine what triggers it. It's almost as much fun as the magical battery levels. Plugged in the other day, went from 4% to 100% in a nano second.
interesting...my auto and slider work just fine
ugh still getting this problem daily. does't matter if auto brightness is on
There is no solid way to reproduce the problem, so I am willing to bet its a hardware issue. I will be calling T-Mobile this week to replace it.

Of the people who are experiencing it, how many have a notification drawer widget (Widgetsoid, Power Controls, et al?) and have a brightness toggle on it?
I've removed brightness from Widgetsoid to see if it's a conflict of some sort.

Might be a hardware issue? If it was software I think a lot of people would be complaining about this.
Edit: ugh as I was typing this post, screen flashed and turned off with broken brightness. I just rebooted like 5 min ago too

Not sure. Here's one report on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40378
Edit: could just as easily be a OS issue, if it decides to stop polling the light sensor for some reason. Many people have the battery bug as well, which seems to stop polling the battery for some reason.
Evening all,
I've had my nexus 4 for around a month now and I've only just noticed that the Auto Brightness does not work what so ever. It's set to automatic as stated - but no matter what the surrounding light is - it just never changes!
I've scouted the forum and can only see people stating other problems with there Auto Brightness, none that are relevant to mine. But I do apologise if it has been mentioned before, I just couldn't find it.
Thanks for the help.
Jay.
I used to use Velis Autobrightness before I moved to CM and a Custom kernel.
It's free in the store. You can adjust the sensitivity as well so it changes more/less instantly.

You can try downloading lux from the play store and see if that works. It can tell you how much light your ambient sensor is reading. If auto brightness works with lux, it's a software bug so flash a custom rom or re flash your rom. If lux says your ambient sensor doesn't read different values, you probably have a defective sensor.
Light sensor not working or a system issue?
hey guys i noticed a couple of days ago that my auto brightness is not working as it used to i.e. it doesnt change at all....i figured that this might be a system software issue so i tried a couple of auto brightness apps and one of them worked for like half a day and now even that wont change the brightness at all...now im worried that there is a problem with my ambient light sensor!!! can someone please help me with this??!! thanks!!!!

I have the same issue Jay. I can't get any help with it either....i tried a couple of autobrightness apps from the play store and one of them worked for half a day and then even that stopped working...so im in a dilemma of whether it's the system software or the phone's sensor which is the problem. I don't even know if my eyes are cheating me, or the tablet is indeed have a problem.
(If you followed my previous topic, this is the second tablet I got, brand new.)
Noticed the issue in Hangouts first, with AI keyboard and dynamic screen mode.
Disabling dynamic seemed to fix the issue.
But yesterday I saw it again... at least I think.
It was only a Chrome window, and I was reading news.
The screen went from lighter to darker while I did nothing with the tablet.
Anyone else seeing/having the same issue?
It's so damn annoying.
I mean, I never had such issue on my displays on any device. That's why I think it's not my eyes...

Try turning off "Reading Mode": [Settings] -> [Device] -> [Display] -> [Reading Mode = Off]
Just a thought.
This may be a silly question, but, is your brightness set to auto?

Yeah, did that yesterday night as a last resort. Didn't notice the issue happening since then, but I will keep an eye on it.
By the way, now I have a working tablet, I'm quite satisfied. (Except this.)

I believe it happens whenever an image is shown. So you will probs notice it when text takes up the entire screen and as you scroll down the page and an image comes into view the screen will change brightness.
Just have to get used it a guess. I kinda am lol.

the tablet has dynamic backlighting that i haven't seen anywhere to turn off (it's not the screen mode, i have that set to movie). there was a thread about it earlier and i think only the OP and i were able to see it. it's a lot subtler than other devices but when you have a dark scene the screen dims a bit, then when you have a "bright" scene the screen increases the backlight a bit.
I have this issue and its especially noticeable with gifs on screen.

Well, at the moment I contacted the local consumer rights service and will try to use the law against the carrier.
Which basically means that they will have to refund me for both the tablet and mobile data fees.
Yeah, this provider got the best prices. And the worst customer service.
And yeah I waited YEARS for this tablet to arrive (I missed the original 10.1 bandwagon)... and it's riddled with bugs. Don't even know what to do if they do refund.
Should I buy an iPad? But that's dumb as a rock. A normal tablet? What's the point in that?
So yeah. Wait for the Note Pro? But who knows if it won't have the same... or even more issues?
Yeah, #firstworldproblems, I know.
But I had a Latitude XT2 laptop with a pen. Most magical thing ever.
I just wanted to write again. ;_;
pls sammy why u do dis to us...
@madsquabbles: Nah. I disabled dynamic, set it to normal or what. Auto backlight is off ... I checked everything.
This is not a feature, but some stupid power management or firmware issue. Not that Sammy would address either. (See the lack of 4.4 or multi-seat support. The tablet is far from brand new.)
ps.: I don't think it's that two of you could see it. You two had the same panel issue as I do. (Remember, Apple also loves to mess up things like this. Like their latest problem with the Retina MBPs had the burn in problem. It was the same machine, but two companies were shipping the LCD panels. One was faulty, other one was perfect. I suspect the same.)
@Geordie Affy: I found this issue happening on news sites. But now it happened on a wall of text (it was a news site again, but without any images.) And today, even in LectureNotes. Not that it's bad, BUT it's annoying as hell.
Baaah. Sorry guys for "mentioning", I just tend to use this stupid mail symbol to refer to people.
Silly internet. There are no symbols left that would cause no harm. ;_;

Use the law against carrier? Good luck.
If everything else works, as you said, then why don't you fix this issue (not sure if it's a bug, as you call it).
Turn the auto brightness off, control it yourself.
Or install lux, if you're rooted, and you have much better control.

This is different. It's not auto, it's not scene mode, it's not what you think it is.
Uhm... okay how can I explain this.
If you don't have it, you can't guess what we mean.
It's like... you are reading some text, and it goes darker, then brigher, then darker. At the very same screen, even if you stop scrolling.
Then if you got images, it can become worse.
It's terrible because you spend like 10 seconds each time to check if you eyes are bad or there is something fishy going on.
As I said it's possible a faulty panel provider or something.
Now I'm on the carrier-war. If I lose that, I'll send the tablet back to Sammy for LCD replacement/repairs.
I have seen this exact issue and have been able to reproduce it on my friends unit as well. Open up snote.. Start recording a voice memo and watch.. The screen flashes dim and bright. Dim and bright.. It drove me nuts.. Then I noticed.. It was actually doing it in unison with the red blinking dot of the voice memo. So I think it's something where there is an animated gif/pic on screen. I will test turning off reading mode to see if that fixes it and report back. I think I also have mine set to dynamic

it's more of a gimic than anything. it's a way to boost contrast numbers without any real benefit to the end user, imoh.
Hi guys,
I have to fire 7 in tablets both bought at the same time from same place. Both are running the same Lineage-12.1 ROM (12.1-20170802-Unofficial-ford)
But for some reason when i keep them side by side one of them has a very dull screen brightness where as the other is nice and visible. I am not sure if this has to do with the hardware or some missing setting in the one that is dull. I tried making both 100% bright from the upper menu but the screen difference is still the same.
The bottom image is the brighter one. Any idea if some setting somewhere is causing this?

On checking further I noticed that the tablet which is showing dull color seems to show the exact same even when I adjust the brightness slider in the top menu. When the slider is on 0 or 100% its the same. that tells me that the software slider is somehow broken?

Known kernel issue with custom ROMs. Symptoms typically rectified with a reboot. If no joy try a full power down with a 5 sec pause before restarting.

Probably not. Likely have to sideload a full version of FireOS to refresh/replace the kernel - then start over. There is no known 'fix' for the problem other than keeping memory load to a minimum (or using the swap tweaks that I outlined elsewhere).
