EDIT: Despite what the CSR below told me, they do offer exchanges. You can do an 'advance return' where they will put a hold on your CC for the full amount of a new device, give you a code to buy a new one, and release the hold when they receive your old device so you're still only charged the original discounted amount. However, you can not exchange a discounted Moto X for one of the new Bamboo ones (read here)
************
I've been looking into the details on exchanging a custom Moto X and was just told via chat that they do not do true "exchanges". Rather, they just have you return the phone, refund you, and have you buy another. So you wouldn't be able to get an exchanged one with the $150 discount. Here's the transcript.
Desiree: Hi, my name is Desiree. How may I help you?
Me: I have a question about the 14 day exchange policy
Me: I am planning on buying a device tonight with the $150 off promotion
Desiree: I will be more than happy to assist you on this.
Desiree: Go ahead, please.
Me: If I don't like my design and want to exchange it within the 14 day window, will I still be able to get a redesigned device at the discounted price?
Desiree: My apologies, the $150 off promotion will not be applicable to the exchange device,
Me: Ok so then you don't really offer exchanges, just returns?
Desiree: My apologies about this but that is how it works.
Me: ok thank you

However, Motorola Support's twitter contradicts what this CSR said:

I've been looking into the details on this, and apparently they don't really do a true "exchange". Rather, they just have you return the phone, refund you, and have you buy another. The one re-design mentioned above applies to when you buy it on contract and get a Moto Maker PIN (in that case, you send the phone back and they give you a new PIN rather than a refund). I just confirmed all this in chat:
So if you don't like your design or were hoping to switch it out for a wood one (if they come out in the next 2 weeks), you're going to have to pay full price for the new one.

Good to know! Just ordered a phone for my brother, hopefully he will not be disappointed with his choices, hahaha.
We here's the real fact if you happen to get a defective one. They do an advance return if you choose it. They are authorize your card just like the nexus exchange after they send you a link to a new build with the same specs (you customize it but it locks in whatever memory config and model you chose before). They then go ahead and build your replacement and ship it. After they receive the return (that they pay to ship back!) They will remove the charge for the new device... Or the authorization. So really, with defects you don't lose out on your deal. I don't know about voluntary returns... But with defects, I'm in the process of it right now and paid the initial order with a coupon.

Updated the OP, it's possible that that CSR was wrong as their twitter states you can exchange it (likely via the method mentioned above). Eitherway, it's annoying their own support can't give consistent answers.
Yeah, I suspect that you can get it exchanged and that their support is either confused or misinformed.
They state that you can exchange your device. Whatever internal process they use for that is not your problem: an exchange is an exchange, and it should result in zero dollars being paid.

Well, maybe, but that has nothing to do with the Cyber Monday deal - which was the original question.

They would not do an exchange for me when I had camera issues. I was told their process is to return the unit either for repair or refund, no exchanges.

What, exactly, does that have to do with exchanging a Motomaker device for a different color?
Motorola explicitly states that they will exchange a device within 14 days for a different color configuration. The point is that it doesn't matter how Motorola looks at an "exchange" - any discounts to the original sale would still apply.
My advice: don't waste your time with the chat reps.
As Jayrod said, they do exchanges. What they do is they send you a new "special pin" through email that lets you re-order on MotoMaker (you input the pin at the end). This can be accomplished without a charge on your CC (they give you two options: advance replacement, or regular replacement).
You can replace OR refund even if it is not defective and if you just don't like the colors and even if you open the factory sealed box.
Well the Moto FAQ on the Bamboo back has answered the question a lot of people have been wondering:
I purchased a Moto X from Moto Maker using the a holiday promotion code. Can I switch it to a Moto X with Bamboo?
If your phone falls within our return period, you can return it for a refund of the original purchase price and re-purchase a Moto X with Bamboo. However, the Holiday discount you received will not apply.

Yikes... so then, it's $250 more for Bamboo. Your head would have to be made of wood to exchange for the wood phone.

Pretty much. Maybe if the phone had a Snapdragon 800 and a much better camera I would do it because the phone would be a little more future proof. As it is though, I doubt I'll keep this phone much more than 6 months and definitely not more than a year. As good as the phone is, there is plenty of room for improvement and if I was paying $250 for wood, I wouldn't want the phone to become outdated as quickly as this might.

I agree.
If this phone had the latest and greatest then I can see shelling out that much for a Bamboo back. The Snapdragon 800 should last you a long time into the future. It's too expensive for me is all I'll say. Someone out there will definitely want a phone with a natural back even at the price it commands. I'm sure the process to make these type of backs was very complicated, but it would had made sense to have these out from release date. Hopefully the next version of this phone isn't too far off. The concept of it is really awesome and even with now mid range specs the experience is truly amazing.
I don't see the Moto's X specs being a hindrance to moving forward to next year. Slow down? Maybe a bit, but not too much as to say you will want to scrap it right away. After all the X8 chip is something done right.

I think everyone is needlessly scared about the specs on this device. I just purchased a Moto X and have been using it for 2 weeks now, and have seen no reason to believe it will be out of date before the 1 year mark of my ownership. You really cannot compare the Moto X to other smartphones out right now. It's doing at least two things that no other phone is doing (touchless control, always listening and the active notifications), and it was built with those features in mind. That "crappy" 720p AMOLED screen is such that it is because if you went with a 1080p AMOLED or LCD screen, it would blow through your battery. The "slow" dual core processor runs the OS just fine, and the other CPUs handle the special features instead of the main CPU. Have naysayers actually used the Moto X and compared it to the Nexus 5 (arguable the best comparison of KitKat vs KitKat)? I have. I see absolutely NO performance difference between the Moto X and the Nexus 5, based on things I actually do day-to-day (none of these silly numbers only benchmarks that don't really give you a real representation of how the phone will perform for you).
From a financial perspective, maybe at this point, sure - be skeptical about if it's worth the money to get one, or just wait until September to purchase the next iteration. Then again, if you wait even longer, something even better will be out.
Not being made of money, I have started just purchasing the device that I think is the best device available to me at the time and sticking with it for a year (or longer, if it keeps performing well, and nothing else at that time interests me). Any "flagship" device that you purchase right this minute should last you one year just fine, even if it's already 6 months old. The Moto X should perform just fine until at least next October when we can start thinking about the next big update to Android.
Anyone had luck getting them to do an advance exchange on a dev edition?

Very well stated and I agree. I have been bouncing around all of the flagships of late (N5, G2, HTC One) and finally landed on X. I am surprised at how peppy it is and do not notice any difference in performance next to the N5. Now I don't game at all on my phones but for everyday use the X is fantastic. I like the features and the fact that I can be rooted and still under warranty. Also I love that I don't have to obsess over roms like I was on the N5 and HTC One. Go Moto!!!! Obey Google Now!

I was SO READY for a device that just WORKED. One that I didn't feel obligated to unlock, root, and flash a ROM every other weekend to keep it updated with the developer's bug fixes, because it lacked features I wanted or had a terrible OEM skin on it. I haven't even considered rooting my Moto X. Finally, a device from a manufacturer with a UI that's just barely kissed by OEM features, and features that are actually relevant. Coupled with the fact that Motorola usually has the best radios? I'm sold on "good guy Moto" again.

If I decide to get it, I'll let you know. :good: You helped me get my 2nd Moto Maxx last year.
I still love my XT1225. It's the first phone in a long, long time I've been tempted to keep two years. Comparing the Quark to the Kinzie... We have 3GB RAM, we have Qi, we have turbo charging, I have ballistic nylon over kevlar. Yeah, the new XT1280 has microSD slot, but has a SMALLER battery! I'm conflicted. If they had put in stereo speakers and rear camera OIS, I would be sending you money IMMEDIATELY.
But Google messed up yet again with the 2015 Nexus phones, just like they messed up with the 2014 gen6 Nexus phone. If they had made the LG 5.2" Nexus phone be a top tier phone (with at least the same CPU/GPU/RAM/RESOLUTION specs as the larger Huawei), and included Qi charging, it would be a no-brainer. I would be getting the 2015 LG Nexus phone! But just like last year I didn't want a 6" phone, I don't want even a 5.7" phone. And I do want Qi wireless charging.
I'll need to see the Verizon version (Droid Turbo 2) in a store, hold it, look at the display, to see if I want it or not. At least one reviewer said the all the layers for the "shatterproof" screen made the colors look muddy. I also want to see if the phone is too big for me. I held the 5.5" LG G3 a year ago and I even own an LG G4 (I won it in a contest and am going to sell it; still new) and it's at the edge of my comfort level. I know 5.4" is "smaller" but depends on the bezels. Ah, found the measurements...
LG G3 (5.5" 1440p): 146.3 x 74.6 mm
LG G4 (5.5", 1440p): 148.9 x 76.1 mm
Moto X Force (5.4", 1440p) : 149.8 x 78 mm
See what I mean? The Moto X Force has a SMALLER screen but is a LARGER phone than either of the two flagship LG phones -- for some unknown reason. And the LG G3 and LG G4 has rear camera OIS. The LG G4 also has microSD slot.
One nice thing about the new Moto X Force -- since it will be sold everywhere, XDA support for rooting, TWRP, custom ROMs should come faster and stronger. Thanks to the pioneers last year who got us ROOT, TWRP. But until @Skrilax_CZ came along there were no custom ROMs.
Motorola typically has some of the smaller bezels - I assume the shattershield display explains the size.

Exactly my same thoughts, bezels are HUGE and it lacks the fingerprint sensor. I think I'm more interested in the Nexus 6P for the moment, more because of the support and updates part.
Still is an option to consider, but honestly I don't know if I should give Motorola another opportunity because of the crappy support, lack of service and slow update times with the Maxx.
Why do I see some sites saying the camera has OIS?

It doesn't, Motorola never used OIS on their phones with the exception of Nexus 6. Probably it has EIS, but still is not the same as real OIS.

Having just bought the Moto X Force - I'm curious if there will be much of an XDA community for it? There's no section made for it yet. I've spent the last 4 years or so with Samsung Galaxys and always enjoyed a good bit of CM or AOSP once stock gets stale (already out of date with this device only being 5.1.1!)

You'll probably have to do what we all did -- invade the sibling forum until XDA creates a separate forum for all the Kinzie variants.
For several months, all the Moto Quark threads (U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, U.S. Droid Turbo XT1254, International Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx XT1225) were in the Moto Droid (XT1254) forum, even though that model was a carrier-specific Quark (Verizon). Finally the Moto Maxx/Moto Turbo got it's own forum, even though technically there's two separate Moto Maxx models --- the U.S. XT1250 Moto Maxx (which is identical to the Droid Turbo XT1254, even sharing the same FCC ID) and the "international" XT1225 Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx (which does not have CDMA and slightly different mix of LTE bands from the XT1254/XT1250). But our models in this forum have un-lockable bootloaders and can be truly rooted. Verizon's Droid Turbo does not.
So, until a new forum is created specifically for the Moto X Force, then all Kinzies get to post in the Droid Turbo 2 forum! :good:
Bought the Moto X Force via Hantec.co.uk shipped to Canada, love the phone but my biggest concern is lack of factory rom available from motorola. Motorola's support has confirmed that they won't be releasing the factory rom as it's not a dev or pure device. Makes me a little nervous to root/tinker with it considering how pricey it is and no way to return it to stock.
Also, my first impressions of the shattershield is that I'd pretty much sooner have gorilla glass back, as the top lens is SOFT. You will need to get a screen protector on there stat! Also, currently the only place I've been able to find replacement shattershield lenses is via the Motorola website and they only ship to US addresses. Even with a reship company, you need a credit card with a US address. Don't know if anyone has any advice on this topic, but I've phoned motorola US and they refuse to ship outside the USA, and I've phoned motorola Canada and they are adamant that they cannot obtain this product...weird as they're the same company?... Had to find someone who knew someone in the USA to buy them and ship them up to me.

I think that no one here is happy with the service and support that Motorola gave to this device, and most of us won't ever buy a phone from them again.
The phone is really solid, but if you don't get the proper service to your more expensive phone, for sure will be consequences.
I have to say I stopped using this phone and I got a Huawei G8 some weeks ago. Probably for most of the folks out there is kind of stupid to change this beats for a mid-range phone, but at least I'm getting nice Android version out of the box (5.1) and Marshmallow coming soon according to Huawei; this phone is really nice, full metal design, it feels wonderful in hand, with fingerprint scanner, nice amount of RAM, the processor is not the top but it makes a nice job and the price is pretty decent.
The battery last the same as the Moto Maxx, and I have no more bugs or battery draining issues like on Maxx buggy 5.0.2.
It is really hard I will buy Motorola again, if I'm going to have a crappy support and service, then I prefer no to pay so much money in a device from a company that doesn't give a 5h1t about their customers.

This was the MOST EXPENSIVE PHONE, full featured phone Motorola sold in the past year, and Motorola gave updates to all their cheaper phones but ignored us. Is that any way to treat customers who give you lots of money?
Luckily the devs here at XDA stepped in and supplied the support when Motorola failed to live up to their promises. We have 5.1.1 with tons of features on FOUR custom ROMs, plus a custom kernel. I can't thank them enough. (and I've donated money to show gratitude).
Even with the lack of updated software, it's still a great phone. And, as ChazzMatt points out, the software issue has work-arounds! Now that it's a year old, it's also at a much better price point. In fact, I just bought one for my girlfriend. Although, it's an XT1250, so I'll have to wait a bit for the custom ROMs, but I don't think that's a concern for her.
Hey everyone,
I need some opinions from the community on what to do here. I currently have a Galaxy S6 that I got in August. Although it's a great phone, I feel as though it is extremely weak, especially in the battery life category. I just got offered a discount on the Moto X Pure, unlocked so I can just go switch my SIM, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go ahead and pull the trigger on this deal? It is about a $100 discount on the phone, with customization still an option. Let me know what you guys think!

Of the two, the Moto X will have better longevity, as it is using a fairly established chipset and Motorola have open-sourced the kernel (more custom ROM's, and therefore updates, for a longer time). The Moto X also has removable storage support, is completely unlocked, and support pretty much every cellular band known to man.
However, it is also significantly larger than your current phone, and the display is not quite as good (this can be argued one way or the other, but I think Samsung has the best displays right now, hands down).
For me, sweet spot on a phone is 32GB of storage, so with your proposed discount that'd be about $350+tax from Moto Maker. Honestly, that's a really good deal for what you are getting. Just make sure you can handle the size.
The s6 and the mxpe are two very different phones. I prefer large phones, SD card, front facing speakers and lcd. But be prepared to take a step down in the camera department, and you're losing a fingerprint scanner. The mxpe is the best phone for me, but I know its not for everyone.
I made this trade and never looked back at s6...!
I've had much better luck with Moto products then Samsung ones.
Got a moto G5 plus amazon edition, but am concerned about privacy and slow android updates. Also, decided I didn't want to spend that much money.
Considering returning the phone and getting a moto G4 or G4 plus. Leaning toward the G4 since processor and ram are identical with the plus. Anyway, the G5 plus doesn't seem to be a huge upgrade.
I don't play 3d games on the phone but run many apps. Real-world performance wise g4 and G5 plus don't seem to differ that much. I'd rather have speedy(er) updates, no ads, ostensibly more privacy, and the option to root easily in the future, even if it means getting last year's model.
What do you guys think?
What privacy and security issues are you seeing on the g5+?
Just get the non Amazon version of the G5+ then. Although I don't think there are any privacy issues on the Amazon version. The Amazon version tends to get the same updates as the unlocked version too.
I agree, the Amazon version shouldn't have any privacy issues and it will get the updates. Lenovo says they usually get the updates last but they will get them.

Having owned the G4 plus for a very short while (ran it over with my lift at work...) I'd say downgrading is close to a wash, except for a couple things.
The battery life on the G5 plus is superior than the G4 plus. Or just about any phone for that matter. The battery life I've been getting out of this thing is just amazing. Also worth mentioning is the much better fingerprint reader on the G5 plus, which has gesture support. With the G4 plus, all you're really getting is a slightly better screen, IMO anyway.
All in all, unless the moto G4 plus will have more ram and/or is unlockable, I don't think it's worth the downgrade. The battery life is just too good.
I owned a G4 Plus also. It was a fine phone but with a few serious flaws: the most important: 'ghost touches': on certain brightness levels the phone went 'haywire' with random 'touches' on the screen. Also (in my case) the headphones only gave sound in the left ear. That was easily solved by buying bluetooth headphones, but nevertheless...
Screen(size) and camera were better on the G4 Plus however.
Other things why to stay on the G5 Plus: the amount of ram (3 vs 2 gb, in my case) and the internal memory (32 vs 16 gb).
Overall: the G5 Plus is way more 'snappier', battery life is way more better and there are no flaws like 'ghost touches' etc. I would never downgrade!

I own g4 plus. Having screen burn issue. So visited service center. Surprisingly they refused to give service with reason that my ph had been rooted. Actually i have not rooted my ph. So i called to Amazon customer care. And as per their advise i got sheet mentioned of out of warranty letter from service center and send photo of letter to amazon. They now going to refund me money. Now should i go for mot g5 plus???
In my opinion and 9 month of use, moto g4 plus is a very good phone in terms of performance. Only issue is with display which is having hardware issue. So dont go for it.
And pls suggest should i go for g5 plus?

Imho: go for the G5 Plus! The common retail version! Not some Amazon bargain...

What privacy and security issues are you seeing on the g5+?

Security as in slow updates...it's still on Android 7.0.0
Privacy as in - with all the Amazon apps that are on my phone and wide range of permissions required, some of which seem overboard - it just makes me wary of being monitored by Amazon. Also, it's not like I can uninstall the apps and revoke the permissions.
1. If you cheap out and buy the Amazon, this is expected to be advertised to. It's the Nature of the phone... Just get a non Amazon phone.
2. The stock non Amazon is in 7.1.1 with the latest OTA, and a SW patch from March. not really that old... Custom roms bring you the ability to always be up to date on security, and rooting let's you remove whatever the heck you want from the phone.
Your hated of this phone seems to be because you didn't want to spend the extra $50 and not get all Amazon's crapware. It's a bit like picking data points from a large study to prove a theory

Thanks for the clarity. I must be seeing things or losing my mind or something!
I'm on my G3 right now -- happily using a rooted stock-based ROM from our very own XDA. My battery life has been decreasing a while now for years, so I think it's just time to replace my phone.
I was excited for the Pixel 2's, but all the screen problems have me worried. I think I've narrowed down my choices to:
Pixel 2
Moto Z2 Force
S8
Essential Phone, with the Price Drop
So I'm wondering which do you think I should get? This is on Verizon btw. I'm really torn and love my G3 so I'm really hesitant to get fully convinced to buy one.
Pixel 2: Better camera, fastest android update and "exclusive" features. Many of which you can install apps to get those feautures and eventually google will make them public, just like the assistant last year.
Moto Z force: Smaller battery than the Essential but you have many mods available.
S8: Samsung bloat is just horrible.
Essential: Hardware and build quality is great but we have very limited accesories. Stock android out of the box is amazing, no need of custom roms at the moment.
Ok, so want a new phone coming from my current Nexus 6P, which I love, but battery issues, and the speakers have gotten bad, so need a new phone in the next month or so. I originally liked the Pixel 2 XL, but for $950 for the 128GB version, I find that outrageous, especially with the poor bad displays most are shipping with, and news today they are failing Quality Control tests from Google too now. I paid $499 for my 64GB Nexus 6P brand new from Google, to me the Pixel 2 XL is what a Nexus 8P could have been, and would have priced like $599 or so. Out of principle I won't give Google the cash for a Pixel. But let's not go there with this discussion.
- Essential @ $499 ( root and ROM's supposedly should start coming in November )
- OnePlus 5T @ ? $550 ? ( 6" display, fingerprint scanner on the rear, 18:9 aspect ratio. Officially announcement due soon )
I want a stock Android type OS, with good battery life, that will get me 6h Screen On time or more. I want a bright display, and smooth OS. I always root my phones, and maybe a custom ROM too. And I want the price under $600. So Essential or OnePlus 5T ?

I came from the 6p then HTC u11. I love the essential. I always root and flash latest and greatest but that is not available and we may never see a strong dev community. With that being said the essential is amazing stock. Between the one plus and essential I think it'll come down to preference. The essential looks and feels great while the one plus looks very Samsung like. I do not regret the 700 I spent on the essential and might cancel my pixel 2 xl order after seeing all the screen issues. But I'll for sure keep the essential

I think that we all are missing an important feature from Essential, mods. Yes, we only have on the moment but maybe in a few months essential and third party will bring great features to the essential phone using mods. That for me gives an advantage to the essential over OP5T, because software and hardware are almost the same.
Little worried buying one from Best Buy, scared it may be old original manufactured units, and the ones bought directly from Essential themselves would be newer manufactured phones, with fixes ?

At least if you get it from Best Buy you can pick it up or they will actually give you shipping information. Ordered one from the Essential website at 7am yesterday, got order confirmation, they took the money and I have heard nothing since about shipping.

What is wrong with the older batch of essential phones?

Got my info late yesterday as well. Mine is also Friday by 10:30. Seems they have no warehousing in the US since they ship from China.

I purchased mine form Best Buy yesterday and it seems fine. I haven't even looked at the speaker grill and I'm not going to. My phone seems perfect so far, and if something goes wrong in the future, I'll just send it to Essential. All of the problems I've had in the last month with other flagships, the Essential phone is a breath of fresh air.
Edit...This phone against other flagships. I would either get this phone or the OnePlus. But I chose the Essential because of the beautiful hardware, and big screen on a small frame.
Old essential phones

There have been complaints about the speaker grill on older phones. Apparently Essential used a piece of fabric as the speaker grill. This fabric seems to be damaged easily. If you get a newer phone, this fabric has been replaced with a something else, maybe metal, I don't know. I'm not going to worry about it though. There have also been reports of the newer phones having tougher ceramic on the back, more scratch resistant. That is pure speculation though. I say don't worry about these things, and enjoy your new phone. If you have a problem later, surely Essential will fix it.

I see. Yes mine is definitely "metal" I'm guessing titanium? It looks no different than the rest of the side band.
I've keep hearing speaker grill issue and I just got one from Best Buy the day before. What exactly the speaker grill issue is? Any photo?
THanks

I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is a thread with photos on Reddit about this. Essential was replacing older phones with new phones with an updated speaker grill, but now someone said that they are repairing the phones instead of replacing them. I don't think it's a big issue myself.

Edit...FYI, the speaker grill on last year's Pixel is also fabric.

My phone has the old style speaker grill, and I could really care less. I'm not sure why so many people think this is an actual issue.
