Hey all!
I purchased the Sprint Galaxy S4 (SPH-L720) off of Craigslist for a screaming deal of 30 bucks in April. It was a great device and at first I didn't notice the issues. After awhile though, I began to notice that it would heat up doing very menial tasks, such as web browsing. This would cause excessive battery drain and also performance issues. I have also noticed that during undemanding gaming it would heat as well. This issue isn't seen as much on the stock Touchwiz ROM (seen most obviously in custom ROMs) but is still present. So, I've a few questions for whoever is willing to help me out a little:
1. Is this issue always present on this phone, despite condition? Or is it a result of years of use? Or neither?...
2. Would a new S4 (preferably GT-i9505) have the same issues?
3. Is this a result of some difference between Sprint's variant and the i9505?
Thanks for any responses. FYI, I only use the phone over WiFi (Sprint isn't my carrier).

No; most of the reviews for them on Amazon say that they enlarge after a few charges. My sister has an S4 with that issue, and it's literally ripped her phone apart over time, separating the screen from the body and even causing the home button to fall off. If you could provide a link to a new stock battery that'd be great.

I had 6 different batteries for my S4 and never had that problem. Best thing to do is buy an OEM Samsung battery or one from a respected 3rd party such as Anker. I swear it does wonders. Especially on a device as old as this. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.

Lol, the inflating battery my sister has is from Anker. So I'll probably stick with an OEM battery.

Performance, no. It's a battery. It powers the device, that's it's only purpose. Battery life, yes. For performance, I would recommend trying a different ROM. A new battery should help with overheating, but could also be being caused by a number of things like apps running in the background and many other things. I recommend using Greenify if you aren't using it already.

Is the Team Wicked X ROM banner a little hint-hint?
I've found CM13 to be the best performer for me. My main concern is overheating while doing simple things like web browsing.

On my PC I have a signature, the app doesn't allow you to use banner signatures anymore. Use whatever works best for you, but if you haven't tried it I guarantee it is the most updated TouchWiz ROM for this device by far.

Finally below 10% juice left. See images. This is the battery from Verizon's site. If ENOUGH of us buy this battery, they'll make cases for it. Right now, they claim there isn't enough of a demand. I see sooooooo many people complain about battery life, but don't want the 3500mAh battery, due to its size. This IS the happy medium. Lets go folks!

This battery is only a little more than 1/3 added juice than the stock battery, so if I can get 3 days, stock users can get almost 2! The key is to use setcpu and create a profile for"screen off" and set the max cpu in that profile to 460 or so.
Good luck!

You guys are smart! I have the 8/1 leak but just about to upgrade to the new "official" leak. Yes, it's the hydra v1.0 ocuv kernel @1.15GHz. S-off, with clockworkmod 2.5.0.5. The theme is the manup revolution theme, but I'm not sure I'll use that one again because the battery meter in the notification bar is not accurate and when I try to change it, I get issues.
The main thing, besides a good bump charge, is the setcpu profile. I'm running setcpu in "on demand". Make one profile for "screen off" and make your max cpu 460 and leave the minimum at 245 or whatever. I made a 2nd profile for battery less than 25% that makes the max 560MHz. I've had NO non-responsiveness. Just always there when I need it and even with the "screen off" profile set to low CPU speed, I still hear my phone vibrate before I get the email in outlook, at work.
Any more questions, just let me know!
P.S. Check my sig to see if it answers anything else you want to know about my set-up.
EDIT: XDA members can get SetCPU for free here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419

This battery is a great piece of hardware. It allows the phone to lay flat while protecting the camera lens and as jermaine151 mentions, there is more phone to hold onto while typing. This is a great buy and I say that even though I paid the extra cost by going through HTCpedia prior to Verizon making this available.

i did this today with 1700 battery and setcpu to 460 screen off. it doesnt last that long with normal use....
A simple way to put this:
Heavy use - 1 Full Day
Medium use - 1 1/2 Days
Light use - 2 Full Days
Stand by/very light use - 3 Full Days(easy)

A few other factors that contribute to my battery life are custom ROMs and custom Kernels. I, personally, run SkyRaider 3.5 with Lou's # 8 kernel. Results may vary.
Don't be afraid to test out these different kernels that are out there, you never know which one will match your phone perfectly till you try them all. I reflashed Lou's #8 in the end after going through 11 different kernels
Verdict: 2150 mAh HTC battery = Good to Go
Glad to see it lived up to expectations

Not to be a spoilsport or anything, but I own the 2150 mAh battery and I have NEVER used the stock battery. I have noticed that it takes less than one day medium use for it to die. Is this because of my rom choice? Because it did this LONG before I ever rooted it. I admit, the first two months, these speculations of battery life are spot on. But after that, it seemed to just die faster and faster.
I don't know. Maybe it is just me.

My 2150 hasn't been holding a charge all that well to be honest. The seidio 3500 still works great. I like the 2150 best as the size is perfect and had just the right capacity when new but I'm a little bummed at how its been lately. I've had mine pretty much since I got the phone right after it launched. The seidio I used in my Eris too, so its been around the block a couple more times

1. Buy / prepare more battery. three batteries for 6 hours, means for 12 hours you will need 6 batteries.
2. Buy $15 phone at walmart as suggested by alewis2k12, so you will have spare phone if the note goes dead. :victory:
3. Try other ROM + Kernel, to find the most suitable to your device.
I have everything updating at minimum times and BT.GPS Wifi and data on all the time and don't go through a battery in a waking day. I went through one and a half on a flight from SC to LA Using the phone the whole way for internet access and a movie.
Im thinking the OP needs to switch ROMS or buy a Nokia 6126 which lasts about a week

No..all Samsung batteries.
Screen was biggest user....and brightness was set at 20%.
Governor was 'powersaver'!
Data usage/battery drain is huge at events like that where tower usage is saturated and your taking pictures and sending etc.
I knew that...but this drain was unreal.
Granted, its an exaggerated example of how poor battery life is on this device...but a viable example nonetheless.
The Note's battery life sucks.
The Nexus 7....bigger screen, also rooted with same custom Rom puts it to shame.
Wise up to it Sammy.
good point, however powersavor governator is not a powersaver lol, but as you mentioned not main cause.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
1. Not Samsung's fault. You're on a ROM that Samsung cannot be held directly responsible for.
2. Nexus 7 is a Device with a different spec, for valid Comparison use another GT-N7000.
3. Go Stock and Report Again - Use the Original Battery.
If you're building case remember to make sure you're under Samsung's Terms of usage. I hope you all remember about the phone that blew up and user brought it up to the media's attention, and later on it was discovered that it was the user's fault (As he was trying to heat a soaked phone from an Oven).
If you're looking for help or assistance, Then I suggest you take it to the Paranoid Android Thread. I'm sure, there are users besides the General Audience that can help you out or users that may share the same issue that you have faced.
Just my N7000 cents.
Well, tablets have considerably larger batteries than smartphones, so that's not really fair.
Also, It's probably safe to assume you aren't running the same apps on either, so apps could easily be blamed.
Instagram, for example, has been known to be a battery drainer unless killed.
As others posted, I also get all day, in general, using PA - although you didn't post which version.
If you have screen display set that low, and your screen time is still the largest (what % is that, by the way? largest could still be just say, '30%'),
then I'd put your batteries under suspect. Some of the knockoffs have very little charge, regardless of what they advertise.

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
nexus 7 doesn't have 3g, turn airplane mode on the note, and battery life will double as well. Also, if you're on paranoid 0.5 and not jb, try AniDroid 0.8 kernel, you'd be surprised how your battery life improves
yeah.
I think you should bring up this issue on the Paranoid Android forums.
They sure can help you regarding this battery life issue, especially the developer, coz he will know the tweaks and changes he made on his ROM.
Rather than you blame on the device, which at the end, sammie won't held any responsible for using a custom ROM.
It has been observed that the MediaScanner is taking most of the battery in ParanoidAndroid Roms. Try stopping that.
Also you can replace the kernel and use Asylum insanity kernel to get better battery life.
So I took the leap to the S6 edge. Took the test drive for 8 days and had to return it. I couldn't do it. It was too small for my taste it felt like I was texting on an iPhone (coming from Note 3, 4, and Nexus 6). The battery life was horrible and the feel from the sloped glass felt off in my hands kind of a sharp uncomfortable feel. Now don't get me wrong the phone is sexy as hell and the camera was a beast but the essentials just wasn't there (battery replacement, SD card, large screen). I was also shocked that it lagged at times. I gave it more than one chance but I just couldn't do it. So I'm back to the Note. And it feels so good. You'll never miss something till it's gone. True Story. Waiting on the Note 5 and hope it comes with a replaceable battery.
Ditto. Everything you just said sums up how I felt after a week with the edge. Although battery life was due to the root method I used removed the stock recovery (or something like that) so the phone would never go into deep sleep. But even on stock battery wasn't anything compared to the note 4. Not to mention I have a spare battery so as soon as one dies, fully charged one goes in phone and dead battery goes to charge. I haven't plugged my phone to charge since like December lol.

Welcome back. My thoughts were the same. The only thing superior is the camera and manual mode . . . But outside of that i view it as a inferior device to the note 4. Its a well made phone though but no expandable memory is a huge fail since we are in the hd and qhd era for content. Streaming is and cloud is not always a reliable solution for many too.

Ah. It all makes sense now.
I thought you were on lollipop as well.
Kitkat is where the battery life is at.
I'll tell you how to get 6 hours on screen time... Turn your screen brightness all the way down and turn on power saver mode. Heck even ultra power if you want.
Everyone user who posts absurd battery life in comparison to almost everyone else is more than likely running some kind of power saver setting all day. Unless you post some kind of time lapse of your settings throughout an entire day of use I'm calling bs.
No way you get that battery life under some what normal scenarios.
For information...
I installed the latest c firmware (d in build prop) with LG flash tool (NOT UPGRADE), a CLEAN install.
wiped(factory reset) before flashing, then in flash tool cleared and made a CLEAN install and factory reset after to be safe (3 resets) .
Now I get very few screen misses, and screen on time 4.5 hours.
Before this I got screen on time maximum 2,5 hours.
Just wanted to let you guys/Girls in on this as it worked perfect for me and my wife.

I was wondering if you are on the Euro 815 version of the G4? Based on your post I'm guessing you are? As a guy who knows what he/she is doing, I was wondering if you could make a flashable zip of the version d firmware? I have a mac and my understanding is you need a pc for the LG flash tool?
Figured I would ask and would greatly appreciate if you could help!!
Do you have the same set of apps installed as you did before the firmware and resets?
I saw better battery results on my second G4 vs my first, some of which I assume was because I installed a lot less apps on the second unit. Which seems reasonable to me.
What device is the OP using?

I'm on international 815 (Euro).
Still using the exact same apps(didn't use LG backup Restore as it brings back the old draining Barry problem from my old backup).
And NO I can't make an zip, as it would skip some important steps. I mean I can make it, NO problem, but then you will end up with the exact same problem add the old.
hey Smaberg, can you outline the step to flash the new version? I'm using 815, but since i'm residing in Asia, my phone is not seeing any upgrades.
Yeah i also like to get exact steps you made to flash

lol at 3 factory resets..just makes me want to skip the whole ordeal
it's 2015 and google (+manufacturers) still can't get their **** together even when using the most powerful hardware available
android 5.x has been utter failure imo.
@smaberg, 4.5 hrs screenon is nothing to be specially proud on, yesterday i had 6hrs with 12.5hrs on battery. Device is H815 and firmware is v10c howecer, i got my device on saturday and did just root it this night... we will see how it behaves now.

Me too, but I did one before flash, one with the flash tool as I chose to make a CLEAN install, and the last mostly to be sure.

I know, but compared to before, with only 2 hours, sometimes even less worth stock a and b I'm pretty ☺ happy, now I'm going to deactivate some junk and see the results, and when I'm done I'll share it.
I'm trying to get the best battery without root, then with root and some of mine scripts and files mod. And we'll see where we stand. In the end maybe an ROM pure made for battery as in the old days. If some still want this? I thought/think people mostly want bling bling and speed...

Hi,
I would definitely be interested in a battery life based ROM. I find that premium phones have more than enough power you need (if youre not a gamer) so as long as the UI is smooth battery life is more important to me.
Regards,
Ravi
Only used 4% battery and got this screen on time. With everything on.

That's weird, you have the economy saver logo activated but still have 62% of battery life...

You can turn it on manually which some people do to prolong battery life rather than just when on low battery.

Correct I have it on pretty much all the time. It doesn't effect anything I do on the phone and I get a lot better battery life as you can see combined with the use of App Ops, DisableService, and greenify

I don't use it because of the annoying orange colour change... How did you get rid of that??
