Came Back to Note 4 from S6 Edge - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

So I took the leap to the S6 edge. Took the test drive for 8 days and had to return it. I couldn't do it. It was too small for my taste it felt like I was texting on an iPhone (coming from Note 3, 4, and Nexus 6). The battery life was horrible and the feel from the sloped glass felt off in my hands kind of a sharp uncomfortable feel. Now don't get me wrong the phone is sexy as hell and the camera was a beast but the essentials just wasn't there (battery replacement, SD card, large screen). I was also shocked that it lagged at times. I gave it more than one chance but I just couldn't do it. So I'm back to the Note. And it feels so good. You'll never miss something till it's gone. True Story. Waiting on the Note 5 and hope it comes with a replaceable battery.

Ditto. Everything you just said sums up how I felt after a week with the edge. Although battery life was due to the root method I used removed the stock recovery (or something like that) so the phone would never go into deep sleep. But even on stock battery wasn't anything compared to the note 4. Not to mention I have a spare battery so as soon as one dies, fully charged one goes in phone and dead battery goes to charge. I haven't plugged my phone to charge since like December lol.

I feel like I should take a rock and toss at you both and yell "go back where you came from!" lol
but welcome back to the BETTER side

Lol. My S6 has no issues. Everything on my Note 4 was transferred to my S6 with 41.2gb left. Battery life is great.

actually just plugged it up.
I guess it's all about the user.

I still like my Note 4. I am also using Galaxy Alpha on Tmo. Tiny phone and cute and I use it when I go jogging. Its only $10 more after the 3rd phone.

Welcome back. My thoughts were the same. The only thing superior is the camera and manual mode . . . But outside of that i view it as a inferior device to the note 4. Its a well made phone though but no expandable memory is a huge fail since we are in the hd and qhd era for content. Streaming is and cloud is not always a reliable solution for many too.

Am I reading that right 6 hours on screen time? I was only getting 3 on a good day. If thats the case then it was me as a user. I had all push notifications on with 50% screen brightness with WiFi always on. I hope the S6 continues to work out for you. :good:

Same here lol. Same here. Came back for the same exact reasons lol

the only good thing about the s6 is that i just read they aquired root without tripping knox, that's still not enough to trade my Note 4!!!!!!

It says 4 hours and 2 minutes, not 6. I don't think 4 hours of SOT is that impressive. I get 6 or more on my Note 4 without even trying.

I'd do it if I could. I sold 200 s6s.
All we could put on them was this:
Those guys rock by the way.
But there's just nothing there.
It's harder to hack.

Custom on the TEKHD rom. 3
No games at all mostly spotify or web browsing on team stream. Kernel apps show that the battery is in good condition and it's only about 4 months old.
No wireless charging here and rarely fast.

Ah. It all makes sense now.
I thought you were on lollipop as well.
Kitkat is where the battery life is at.

I'll tell you how to get 6 hours on screen time... Turn your screen brightness all the way down and turn on power saver mode. Heck even ultra power if you want.
Everyone user who posts absurd battery life in comparison to almost everyone else is more than likely running some kind of power saver setting all day. Unless you post some kind of time lapse of your settings throughout an entire day of use I'm calling bs.
No way you get that battery life under some what normal scenarios.

This is from a normal usage of my phone. As you can see from the graph the last few hours were me connected to wi-fi constantly, tweeting, fiddling and browsing forums. Yes a quick drain but this is a phone!
My point of this post is compare this to tablets and netbooks. The majority last 6 hours, tops. The SGS II is a dual core, amoled phone. It was always going to be a beast on the battery. However if you use it wisely, ie only have Wi-Fi on when necessary, the phone lasts as this phone should.
It out performs most tablets and for the relative size of both screen and battery I would say that's hugely impressive.
Looking forward to your comments.

Your post is refreshing because of the following:
1) Clearly shows the display is the biggest drainer of battery. Anything else means you simply didn't setup your phone right or have some rogue app chewing stuff up.
2) You're not going bonkers with "OMFG my phone only lost 0% over 4 hours" and then post a graph that shows the screen was on for 2 seconds. Uh, well... duh! Completely stupid and pointless, glad your graph actually reflects real usage and battery drain.

now im gonna say this,
you people really shouldnt compare battery time like tht. Its the screen on time you should compare!! its far more accurate than this. i can get around 3h of constat use and connected to wifi. this is screen on time.
what's average screen time in hours for most users? i've been reading about 4 hours plus or minus 1. 8 hours is unreasonable on one charge? i like to read books so i am wondering about this. i highly anticipate this phone but the n9 kind of looks hot too if the rumor is true alien dalvik allows android apps on meego.
So what? You kinda never used your phone. Surf the internet connected via 3g and come back to tell me
So you use your phone less than my grandma and hardly get two days out of the battery?
Great, that's nothing to be proud of.
With this usage my Omnia7 lasted for a week but the SGSII drains harder than my kitchen sink.
I noticed light consumes unusually lot of power too .. I recommend not using it as torch. White screen works just as fine for me (in total darkness). It seems they put in even stronger LED then in previous models .. and it better be used just for the moment as photographic flash. Battery voltage drops significantly .. and it slowly returns after the LED is turned off .. which means it's really strained a lot.
I bet i can get 2 days of battery in the way you used your phone. Screen was rarely on, so you just showed us that you can get a day and a half of stand-by.
At the risk of being accused of grandma phone usage im actually fairly happy.. The wifi sharing thing is a ***** so axed that.
This is with stock but rooted ke7

I'm getting pretty good battery life aswell with stock kf2. The only thing I did is deleting some of he crappy samsung apps and froze wifi sharing. I get about 2 days of battery with normal use. And yes i do use the phone in these 2 days.

Battery drain

I notice my battery life varies a lot. Sometimes it lasts more than a day. Sometimes I'm in the red by 10 pm, with more or less the same usage through the day. I notice when the battery is draining fast, I can reboot the phone and get the normal, long battery life back again. I hope this helps anyone who has the same issue. It could be the apps I have and/or android itself doing the draining after having been up for a while. A reset refreshes the processes.
I have had random wakelocks off and on since I got this phone, but since I rooted with kingo the wakelocks and battery have been much much worse.
sEnt from thE noTe 3
My battery was flawless until I rooted with DD's process. I went from 2d+ battery lasting down to 24h just like my S4. Pretty disappointing. It appears to be something interfering with the kernel or something, I have no idea. My phone was taken off the charger at 100% while turned off and when I unplugged it and turned it on it was already at 98%. 4 hours later I'm at 63% after very minimal use.
Same here. Wakelocks everywhere after I rooted with Kingo

I agree, I have definitely had an abundant amount of wakelocks killing my phone since I rooted with Kingo... I used to defend Kingo but when I rooted with DesignGears method everything was flawless. I was able to get around 2 days and 6 hours of on screen time before.

Yeah definitely going to have to agree with you Rippley. At first I was in denial that it was Kingo, and I still don't believe the allegations of malware and all that but it definitely is giving wakelocks. You can try to root with Design Gears method and see if that helps. It helped me it just takes a little longer.
I may just figure out how to go completely back to stock without root. Without the ability to flash roms, I don't really need it.

That is actually bad battery life.the phone on a bad day should get about 4-5 hours of screen time.

Greenify is kind of generic. It doesn't identify and tame wakelocks from what I see. It just has a list of apps that apparently get greenified?
5 hours of screen on time is realistic unless you're gimping your phone by turning brightness down and everything off. 2-3 hours isn't that great..that's Nexus 5 level

Rooted with Kingo, definitely not complaining. Was able to limp it for 1.5 days.
Using Battery Doctor + Greenify, screen on auto, wifi/GPS on. Not sure what the on screen time was tbh, but was on for a few hours minimum.

Now lets see how the battery handles while playing Ingress!
I would be very happy with this if it is typical usage!
If I can actually get anywhere near this I will be very Happy.
Not as good as I was hoping, but still reasonable. That's right around what I've been averaging with my Moto X.
Not good at all.
The wake locks are horrible!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I think that is looking decent, with 13% of the battery used being on 'Cell standby' it is clear that reception was not good during the day. On my nexus 5 when cell reception is good Cell standby barely registers on the list. Max of 5% usually. So would we be looking at 6.5 hours screen time if reception is good? Also no indication that battery saving has been used or not (doesn't look like it is, on the screenshots as the notification/nav bar are not orange). Or what screen brightness set.
Who knows. It is all guessing until more reviews are out.

Just what I was thinking
Sent from my Nexus 7
Yes, same with me. On my Nexus 5 with quite good reception the "mobile standby" is less than 5%.
With that in mind, we will have more than this.
And see those wake-locks, horrible.
Probably some apps, services, or accounts need to be properly setup and configured.
More battery life from that.
And for more extreme, we can use darker theme
So, I am OK with this early report, it's a GOOD BASE!

I'm seeing similar wakelocks on my nexus 5 with the last preview. The one before it had much better battery life, at least for me. I think kitkit has better battery life than lpx19D. so much for improved battery savings in 5.0.

Yeah me too. My N5 was charged fully yesterday morning and it just sat at my house untouched all day, and by the time I went to bed it was at 75%, which is pathetic. That's the last dev preview. On KK, it still would have been at 100%, or at worst 99%. I didn't investigate what was causing it, but that was bone stock without a single app installed. It shouldn't be like that. Hopefully the final version won't have that issue.

The first time i did the "return my phone then get a replacement" deal, but that took close to 2 weeks. I'm doing the send at the same time and put a hold on my card. This is getting ridiculous. I will have some fun with the survey I was told i would be receiving!

What do you think 5.1.1 might bring to our shamu when it finally drops? I think, and hope it will finally put an end to all the variants we currently have in 5.1, i.e. D, E, H, M and I. It would certainly curtail a lot of questions users are posting here. But who knows, Google could start the whole saga over again. Does anyone think that things are changing with the Nexus line catering to the different carriers now as opposed to the way things were in the past?
Also, this update may address the memory leak plaguing some devices. Have any of you seen or experienced this leak? I have not. Are there any other bugs you experience that you hope are addressed?

I know that there are different versions of "Google play services" and that there is a potential problem with one of the versions causing battery drain. Can someone point me in the direction of which version I should be on?

Awesome... That is the one that I am on! Thank you!
I absolutely LOVE this phone and its huge screen, but the battery is a complete disappointment. It can't give me a complete day of use... I could use my old OnePlus One for 2 days with 7 hours of screen on time, but my Nexus 6 can't arrive at night before being charged with just 3-4 hours of screen on time.
P.s.: now I'm on stock + Lean Kernel, but I've also tried different ROM + kernel combinations...

What other have you tried?
Which rom/kernel combo gives you the best battery life?

I'm 100% stock and I easily get 5 to 6 hours SOT every day. Plus, with turbo charging, if I get too low, 15 to 20 minutes on charge and I'm good for whatever time I need.
Everybody uses their phone differently though. Perhaps you should look into a wakelock detector and see what it is, specifically, that's raping your battery.

ROMs: stock, Chroma, Euphoria, OptiPop... and others, maybe.
Kernels: stock, Code_Blue, franco, Lean.
A great phone with a disappointing battery life... shame on you Google/Motorola! :crying:
I am enjoying the phone, too. My initial hesitations were the size, and the display not being as bright as others (especially since I use it in my car a lot for GPS navigation). Neither has been much of an issue. The size and one handed use issue is so overblown compared to the Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus.......
One little issue --- the phone has completely frozen up on me two or three times in the month or so that I have had it. Anyone else experience this? Is it the memory leak?
Listening to Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff". Reminds me of touching the back of the Nexus6 while charging!

New update coming that should fix battery drain

TMO is pushing version PC8 now and reddit users are claiming that the battery drain is fixed. Hope VZW follows soon!

be nice if they fixed the crappy FFC too. they say video improvements, so maybe they fixed the snapdragons problem with 240fps slowmo and choppy 60fps 1080p too

You mean it is fixed in the TMO update? If so, really hoping for a fix in the VZW one whenever that comes...
It will be fixed with the next Samsung update...TMO just pushed PC8 to their users... Now they love the Phone. International users have had it a while and PC9 has been spotted in China. Good time are coming cause the performance sucks on PB5.

so who has proof ffc was fixed? sorry, but some random guy on a forum saying it has without showing any proof isn't really proof enough.
especially when I think it was phandroid.com that did an article saying slow motion still isn't fixed with that update...

My new S7 has better battery life than the POS Note 4 i traded in, usually the battery is depleted by the time i get home from work every single day in the last 2 years, now I have 50% left with the new S7, loving it.
I just picked up an s7 on Saturday. I'm not impressed with the battery life so far. Android system is the top battery consumer. I came from the nexus 6p and Android system was never high on the list. Also, it doesn't show up as a top battery consumer on my girlfriends s6.

I REALLY like this phone size, speed, screen, camera, etc. Almost everything is great, which is saying a lot because this is my first non-rooted phone and I was nervous about it. I've disabled the Verizon and Samsung apps I don't care for, so I am good there. The problem is, battery life is pretty bad considering how much it was raved. My LG G3 could easily get the same battery life/SOT. I'm on wifi 85% of the day, good signal strength, yet I barely can get 2.5-3hrs screen time and ALWAYS have to charge during the day. Like others, the Android OS is what's killing my battery. I am within my 14 day return window, and I am starting to think the issues won't be fixed, so it might be time to consider a different phone. Hoping for some help or suggestions here.
Just got this phone yesterday this is my first cycle. I'm not sure why you're getting 2.5-3 I almost got 6hrs and all LTE too... Mostly gaming and browsing some streaming YouTube to my car with blutotooth. I'm very impressed so far even though Android system still showed up on mine as a top consumer. I'll try to get 6hrs screen time if I turn on power saving maybe

+1 my battery usage looks a lot like this
Looks about right. That's what I get. It's great battery life for usage. People just get paranoid about Android system using power in standby. Hopefully the next update Congress to Verizon soon and helps the battery get even better.

Did you guys do any disabling? Do you have push email or push exchange, location, etc? I have moderate battery life - about 2.5 hrs SOT on a 17-18 hr charge cycle. I would expect to get better SOT if I used it more often, but obviously at the expense of overall battery life.
I think Android System hides a long t of battery hogs - I think lots of apps will wake the phone to sync or perform background activity or notfy, which gets caught as Android system.

Disabling apps that aren't really needed really help in my opinion with battery life. Disabling location history helps. Turning off some of those unneeded wifi search settings helps too. I turned off the always on display. I think my record was something around 4 hours of screen on time. Using the gear s2 smartwatch I got in the mail from Verizon really decreased my battery life. I am exploring ways to fix that since i really like the watch.
