yes I wonder if they haven't finalized their software for it or if you should only turn it on in certain situations or what.
Anyways, I haven't seen many videos but here's one that shows the super steady and well exposed video the G3 can shoot, along with no audio issues. Pretty impressive for indoors video so far:

Looking good, the audio cancellation issues aren't great, but I hope it is software related somehow. I really dig the "magic focus" feature. Much better implementation than HTC.
The real question is if they have improved the camera in low-light conditions with moving objects. The LG G2 stock camera suffered BADLY in trying to shoot pictures of moving objects in low light conditions.
In addition, the stock G2 camera denoising algorithm was way too aggressive leading to watercolor-like pictures, again especially in low-light.
Glad they tried to address the slow focus issue with the G2 by implementing laser focus.

Photographer here -- unfortunately, in low light with ANY smartphone you'll have difficulty capturing a moving object. With low light, you require a longer shutter speed, and depending on how fast the object is moving, you're guaranteed to have blur. Whether your phone is hand held or on a tripod does not matter -- the motion is relative to the camera, not the camera itself.
In low light to be able to effectively capture a moving object with no blur you will need a large sensor camera (e.g. DSLR APS-C or m4/3) and fast (large aperture) lens. Smartphones have small sensors and can't capture as much light which therefore requires lengthening the shutter speed to allow enough light in to expose the scene properly. Similarly, they can't use higher ISO (sensitivity) to keep the shutter speed short either due to having excessive noise at comparable ISO levels.
The exception to this is a good flash. With a good flash you can use a faster shutter speed and be able to "freeze motion" better. Of course, the flashes on phones are underpowered and will only help you out if you're reasonably close to whatever you're trying to capture.
Just to give some examples, in lower light situations small sensor cameras pretty much have to use a 1/30s or longer shutter speed. Any object that's moving faster than a snail's pace will therefore have blur. On the other hand, with a large sensor camera and fast lens, you can realistically increase your ISO to say 6400 if you have a fast moving object and set your shutter speed to 1/200s and fire away.
Another issue is that we really don't have effective control over shutter speed on smartphones. Hopefully this will come eventually with Android's new API (along with RAW support). Sure, most people don't know how to shoot in manual mode but for those who do it's very helpful. I believe many phone manufacturers include a "sports" or "action" mode that will prioritize shutter speed over ISO (and no idea if the G2 has a similar mode), but still there's only so much it can do with a small sensor in a situation where the physics just aren't in its favor. Smartphones are great in good light, but if low light is a priority, a dedicated camera is the only solution.

With all that said, what do I think of the G3's camera so far? Well first off, OIS is critical when you're not shooting outdoors and not using a tripod (due to the shutter speeds as I explained above). No other Android flagship has OIS which is quite a shame, so based on that the G3 is already starting ahead of the pack. The benefit of this is clearly demonstrated in PhoneArena's samples compared to the Galaxy S5. Due to the indoor lighting, the S5's shots appear to lack detail because of the blur induced by a long shutter speed that's not stabilized optically. Meanwhile, the G3's are tack sharp. Their samples are more of a "real world" demonstration compared to many smartphone camera reviews where they have the indoors shots stabilized on a tripod. Having the phones on a tripod eliminates the reviewer's shaky hands from affecting results, but it also hides the necessity of OIS for low light photos. 99% of the time we're not using a tripod with our smartphones.
From samples I've seen so far, LG appears to have gotten their software processing down pretty well -- way better than the G2. White balance and exposure seem to be handled well, and photos seem to have better saturation than the G2.
The G3 also appears to have a wider angle lens than the S5, and I appreciate that its sensor is 4:3 rather than 16:9. 16:9 may fill up your entire screen when framing the shot, but if shooting in landscape mode you're really losing out on vertical height (and vice versa if oriented in portrait you're not getting much horizontally). The G3 without a doubt fits more into the frame due to both the lens angle and 4:3 aspect ratio.
With the OIS and good software processing, at this point the G3's camera looks to be the most promising of any Android device. I'll wait for more samples to make a firm conclusion, but again, the G3 is more compelling than anything else right now.

HTC One M7 also has it, M8 lost it coz it didnt play well with the duo camera setup apparently.
My view on G3,Sorry to break ice about camera but here are facts :
1. There is no laser in g3 but laserish IR light that gets detected by camera to focus for near objects.
2. No practical use in daylight.
3. Useless to detect & focus on far objects - let's check when reviews comes for range. Depends on how powerful ir included.
4. Same camera hardware except Lewis software promotion.
These are simple practical physics facts of camera working.

Hi all, I 've been thinking of buying a new phone & I really like the g2 very much but the only thing that is stopping me is the camera performance.
Can someone please tell me after the Jishu/xdadebb mod how is the camera performance under low light, how is the autofocus in low light also is the continuous autofocus in the video problem resolved. How much is the shutter lag after the mod.
I really want to buy this device for the camera & its under my budget if the camera ain't good enough even after the mods I may go with oppo find 7a/oneplus one which are in the same budget but have better camera.
I dont capture my photos in low light. But the camera is pretty amazing with xdadebb mod, and Mi2Raw enables the G2 to capture raw footage as well.
The G2 and G3 has the same camera sensor, just that the G3 has a Z-Axis image stabiliser and laser autofocus. So if I were you, I'll go look at those camera comparisons on review sites comparing the G3, OnePlus One and the Oppo.
Edit: Video performance is pretty good too. xdadebb camera mod allows for tap to focus in video to focus your subject and it works well. It has object tracking too!
Edit 2: With dorimanx's kernel, I was able to turn down the mic gain when I was at a concert. That + the stereo recording = pretty awesome recording

I haven't tried taking pictures in low-light conditions yet, I should, will do and compare later but under bright, sunshine outdoor, with Normal mode, I see virtually no difference in term of performance and image quality. There are several features that I haven't tried out yet.

The low light camera quality is good. The mod makes very little difference to low light pictures.
Thanks guys for your responses. I think I might go with oppo find7. It's better than the g2 in every aspect except battery life & OS updates. Which can be taken care by the VOOC charger & custom roms respectively.

I received my LG G6 today, and I loved it. Until I turn on the camera. OMG. Before I had a Nexus 6P, I do not know if it is the Nexus that was exceptionally good or the LG G6 which is exceptionally bad, but I am overly disappointed.
What the hell is this camera quality on the G6? The only interesting thing is the wide angle. But it looks like all the pictures are smoothed out. And I'm not talking about the front-facing camera ... The 2013 flagship were doing better ...
On snapchat it's even worse. The app uses the ratio 18: 9, is made of 2.1 MPX photos with the front camera. And we can not fix it.
Is anyone now if it's the sensors who are completely ****ting where if it's optimizing and working the photo by software that destroys everything?
What is the best way to fix the snapchat quality?

Not sure what the problem is for you guys. I'm very satisfied with the camera quality on my G6. Coming from the G5, I was a bit hesitant after reading reviews, but I have no complaints.

This. Snapchat is a useless pile of do do software which unless you are under 16 you shouldn't even be using lol.
As for normal rear facing photos the quality trumps my S8+ as I now have both phones and the G6 photos are absolutely top drawer.

Wow I never knew that, that's just terrible. I know the quality isn't great, but I had no idea that was the process the app takes.

I went into a store today to play a bit with the LG G6's camera and was also very very disappointed. The light wasn't too good, and only artificial light was available, I took a few shots of the label describing the phone from a distance of about 30cm with both the G6's f/1.8 OIS lens and my 4-year-old Xperia ZR. I set both of the phones' cameras to the highest resolution setting available, took a few shots making sure that the focus worked well, and then zoomed in on both to compare the photos side-by-side. The quality of the G6 photos was horrible, when I zoomed in it looked like really bad compression artefacts. I couldn't find any settings for picture quality, and the guy working there was trying to convince me that switching to 16:9 mode would improve quality, because "it's better". Right! (He also tried to convince me that the quality wasn't good, because it was only 13MP instead of 20MP (or more) like in other phones. I thanked him for his advice and left )
Based on the low-light photo comparison available on gsmarena I was very positively surprised by the picture quality of the G6 and was actually going to get it, yet it seems I've drastically changed my mind after this single experience.
Was I doing something wrong? Are there actually some hidden settings where you can adjust the compression quality like in other phones? I'd love to give it yet another try, if it makes any sense at all that is.

The G6 tends to focus relatively slowly in low light. Also the low light photos tend to be a little noisy and have a white balance shifted a little to the red.
G6 IQ is really nice actually, Sony processing is easily the worst but see here, I think its pretty decent.

Try cleaning the lens first
The biggest issue in my mind is the inconsistency in performance. Under the same conditions of good light, in auto mode, I'll get either a soft dull photo or a sharp and bright one. Manual mode gives a little more consistent results-- my best outdoor shots are taken with -1-1.5 EV, then brightened post processing. Low light photos are pretty crappy overall-- pretty much like snapshots taken on flipphones from 10 years ago.
Its disappointing that I can't dependably get a great photo right "out of the box" (like you can with Samsung's S series) and that I have to fiddle with settings or mess around with modded Gcam software.
I agree that LG could have chosen a better sensor for their flagship phone, or fixed their processing algorithm.
Maybe this is one reason that Samsung has beat LG so badly in sales.
I think we keep coming back for this, but as far as i can say:
LG G6`s camera is pretty good, but tends to have problems with oversharpening, in the dark the pictures tend to looks too noisy, but using google camera app with G6 for low light conditions really does wonders.
About snapchat, as somebody mentioned, snapchat really takes a screen from camera preview, for most the part, the snaps were a so so ok, but after recent updates i also noticed, that front camera in snap has become significantly worse, and also the back cam seems a bit choppy too, so it sure has something to do on their side.
I know I'm late but I also have a G6 and found out how to fix the problem with the camera quality. Snapchat, however will still be as terrible as it is due to the developers trying to make snapchat compatible with all androids using a single app on the Google Play store (smarter if they broke the apps into different phone types likes Samsung and LG). Open up your camera app, click on the cog/settings icon. Change the photo size to 4:3 (13MP) or (5MP) for both front and back facing camera views. For video resolution, change it to FHD 16:9 (60fps) for the back facing and FHD 16:9 for front facing. Hopefully I wasn't too late.

me the quality on snapchat do not bother me especially against I really would like to have a way to select which camera sensor apps should use, I would like to make a snap wide angle

Unfortunately, I have resell my G6 for that bug. I bought the S8+, it was better but not good. It's due to 18:9 ratio, who seems uncompatible with snapchat. There is the same problem on One Plus 5T, and on all phone who have a 18:9 ratio.
For this reason, I have resell my S8+ and then buy the Pixel XL.
I didn't find any solution for any concerned device. I think we have to wait Snapchat fix.
Snapchat will normally be full rebuild for android on january. I hope it will fix it.

Use a ported version of Google camera even tho in my opinion the stock is still very good, and nothing will fix the Snapchat camera til they update it optimised for lg g6

Yep, I did. I'm coming from Nexus 6P, and the LG G6 caméra, except Wide angle, was bad. S8+ camera was good, except the 18:9 ratio who's doing **** on snapchat and all photo apps ( instagram, messenger,etc..).
But I've broken the screen, so I've looked fort the best camera on 16:9 ratio : The Pixel XL. As good as the S8+ for rear, and not ****in zoomed and blurred front facing camera.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto Z2 Force come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

So far I'm pretty pissed off with the camera. I recently tested the LG G6, Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 5, and now the Moto Z2 Force which I was hoping would be my dream phone. I owned the Z Force and so far and a bit disappointed. The Camera seems to have potential but the software is terrible, at least on my specific device. The camera is plagued with shutter lag which really seems to take a toll on picture quality. Pro mode is what really upset me with only having the option of 1/4 for shutter speed as the longest time for exposure. I have taken a great deal of pictures to compare with the phones listed above, so far the Huawei Mate 9 has had the best camera in my opinion. Obviously, this is totally objective as views will change per individual. I am by no means a photography expert, but I am always in search of a great camera in a smartphone. The biggest reason for my angry toward the quality of the Z2F camera is the retail cost of the phone, I really thought this would be a camera I would have loved. It seems like I may wait to see how the Essentials Phone turns out and am very curious about the Nokia 8, both in terms of camera. To date I think the use of a dual camera, one being monochrome and the other RGB, is the best implementation. Please let me know if the inconsistent shutter I'm facing is just a problem with my unit or if other's share it as well. I really had my heart/mind set on this phone being able to go toe to toe with others in its price range. Side note, the LG G6 wide angle lens was great for taking pictures, I was surprised that I liked the secondary camera being a wide angle lens as it allowed for unique perspective. I let go of the LG G6 because my father broke his phone and really thought the Z2F would be the phone of my dreams.
Update: Twist for camera sometimes hangs and after some time force closes. This has also happened on 2 occasions when opening camera app, viewfinder is black followed by hang and crash.

Camera shutter speed seems to be a stock app issue mostly. I have CameraZoom FX and that works better at taking the picture quickly. I do expect this to improve as the device matures and some updates get pushed out to it.
That being said, the overall photo quality seems to be pretty good overall. The S8 I am leaving does a better job of handling multiple light levels (like say bright window light in an otherwise dimly lit room), but I do think the Z2F has some promise for sure.
I do agree that I think the shutter lag is very 2015.....so hoping Moto does fix that

I agree with this. The camera app is terrible. I came from the HTC 10 into this phone and the HTC blows it out of the water as far as camera quality goes, and I doubt there's any reason for that as far as the sensor/hardware goes There are also other apps that don't seem to access the front flash on this phone, I.E. Instagram, snapchat, etc. could be a driver issue or something, but motorola needs to get it together with the Android O update.
Has any compared picture quality with Open Camera and the google camera app?

I just noticed that they added two features to the camera app. Object recognition and landmark recognition.They said that they included some bug fixes but did not elaborate. Hopefully they will continue to work on the app and image quality will improve as the phone matures. I think there is potential to improve low light photo's seeing that the black and white sensor should aid low light photography.
So far I am very happy with my photo's. I am a casual user and happy with the images. Realistically I do not think one can expect DSLR quality on a mobile phone. Maybe one day....
I've used several third party apps, and this camera is total trash compared to even my nearly three year old Galaxy S6.. I have to place dramatic Instagram-style filters on everything to hide how crappy this camera is.
I took this picture with full manual mode and it's quite good for me

Google Camera port is your friend when it comes to the Z2 Force. Also, Snapseed is a great editor.

So, I'm reading through this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/themes/app-modded-gcam-hdr-t3735494 ; there seems to be no gcam available for Z2, which would be fully functional. Are you saying you solved this issue and have one that works? Perhaps you can post to the thread with your findings if you did?

Images are not very sharp. If you are looking for good camera, look for another device. Panorama mode has low resolution, even when camera is 13MPx panoramas are usually smaller than that. You can fix this by changing camera application. But this only helps with panorama. But overall image sharpens will not improve with any app.
Post capture processing really sucks!!!

Agreed about the post processing - makes pictures very soft. Colour rendition is really good. White balance, contrast, dynamic range all reasonable. Focus a bit slow but ok. Correctly exposing for backlit subjects pretty good.
Video is good, except sometimes looks like it's lacking in bitrate. Will try OpenCamera and see if I can tweak this.
Overall rating: 5 out of 10. Would go to 7 if Moto fix the image softness.

I'm impressed with the dynamic range and colours, which seem to be very good. The main issues with the camera are lack of detail and poor low light performance. I'd imagine the first one is fixable via software but I have doubts about the sensors low light ability.
Overall photos are well exposed and colours are good, but my main issue is grainy images when you zoom in on photos.
This camera is horrid. Granted, I'm coming from a 6p, but found some pics taken with my old old droid x, and they were miles ahead of this thing they call a camera. Time to break out the d5100 again!
The camera is disgusting. I was so ambitious about the camera and it disappointed me miserably.
I don't know what some of you are expecting. Its the best phone in the mid-range, compared to its specifications. BUT somewhere the missing money, becomes visible. In this phone its the cam. The cam is useful if enough light is present.

For some reason I got confused and posted about how impressed I am with the photos from my Moto G5+ here, I didn't realize it was the section for the newer S model until after posting.
I've heard the dual camera thing with the S hasn't been so great in the real world, and the sensor in the regular G5+ (which is similar to the one found in the Galaxy S7) may actually be capable of better shots. But I think its because Moto is weird about the software that runs the camera, with over-processing and highlight clipping that can be avoided with better software. Using an app that handles Camera2 makes a huge difference on the G5+, which I was originally posting about until I realized I'm in the wrong place. Sorry guys!
The problem with the camera in this phone is almost 100% software. The automatic settings of the Moto camera app generate horrible photos.
Look at your photo information (when viewing the photo in Google Photos, tap the "i" icon at the bottom) and specifically note the ISO. With this sensor hardware anything over ISO400 is going to be relatively unusable (mottled/blurry detail/sharpness with image noise). If you shoot the same photo in "Professional Mode" manually setting the ISO (at or below ISO400) and the shutter speed, the results are actually quite acceptable, if not even very good.
The flash on this camera is a much more natural color (somewhere in the 2000k range rather than the usual bright white LED >5000k), so using the flash (when feasible) in combination with better manual settings will also help.
Even using manual settings there's still some post-processing fickery going on, but that's still all software. I wish Moto would add an option to turn post-processing off. I think they don't have that option though because most people use the camera in fully automatic mode and the pictures would be REALLY bad if they weren't post-processed when using that mode.

Hi, a friend's of mine buy the moto g5s plus thinking it's gona be better for the photo of the moto g4 he still have.
Result that the photo are not so good, moto g4 it's better.
But someone have already try to install a custom Rom on the moto g5 plus, maybe with Oreo, and result any improvement on the camera and photo?
Or try a different mod for the camera app that result in a improvement for the camera?
If anyone have try that way and can share it's result and opinion about it I will appreciated. My friend don't want to avoid the warranty of the phone for nothing.

Are you talking about g5 plus or g5s plus? Because you mention the one with the s.
Hi, yeah I'm talking about the moto g5s plus. I saw in the xda forum that are present a tread about camera mods, and for use those mod need to enable the full access to API2 cam. But looks like that the main problem with the moto g5s plus camera it's not solved in that way.
For that I though that maybe install a custom Rom, possibly with Oreo, helps or solve the camera issue, considering that the real problem it's software not the hardware. There are many Rom with Oreo to try, for that I'll ask if someone already try that way and get the problem solved, or better wait for an official update from motorola-lenovo and see if they solve.
in low light conditions the result is really bad, with the light discrete but not excelled
Camera is mid range and awfull fotos.... For me isn't very good. Videos are much better

Taken with gcam on g5+ I had my A7RII with me on this trip, but took some shots with my phone as well because the HDR+ effect in camera is just THAT good.
Even records raw so I can edit later, but these are straight out of camera. Have some great shots even in lower indoor light from the trip, but they are of family members I'd rather not post on the internet. Even compared to my "real" pro camera, if used properly this is capable of some excellent shots.
