How good is the camera when someone is moving, specially kids?

So I myself own a Z3 compact that has been amazing, I love everything about it, now, I have an aunt that wants a good phone to take pictures of her kids, but the issue is that kids are always moving, so with the ads that say this has the fastest auto focus, and specifically the video ad shows a parent taking pictures of his daughter jumping around and while for me, I enjoy the Z3c, the camera it's not that good when someone is moving. Can anyone with little kids confirm this, all she wants is non blurry subjects on the photo.
I was considering the gs6 but I would rather go with Sony to support them.

In my experience with a 4 year old, pictures turn out blurry if she is moving. I've only used automatic mode as most of my shots don't allow me the time and luxury of setting up an ideal manual mode. Perhaps manual mode can handle action better, but auto mode is not good for action.

The camera is extremely blurry and the horrible shuttertime makes this otherwise fantastic phone useless for taking pictures of kids. The moment will pass and a blurry useless picture will be the result. I have these 3 phones which all take fantastic pictures of my kid.

I've got both S6 and Z5c. You have to turn Sports mode on to capture movement, otherwise both phones will result blur. Focusing indeed S6 faster and more accurate because of existing Z5c software not yet a mature version, I think it will get improvement when Android 6.0 to arrive later.
The best thing on Z5c is the stock camera remember your last setting, so you can always set Sports as default(I think I'll more recommend Z5c for this reason). On S6 every time you have to click on Mode and pick Sport, pretty time consuming.

Camera is useless with kids, takes great pictures if you can make your kids sit still. But that's not the shots you want, you want to capture moments and thats not possible.

I will pitch in, Yeah the camera is cack. Any less than full daylight and they just come out blurry or noisy. Can't say I am surprised. At least I won't rue loosing the DRM keys when I unlock the bootloader, as I don't see how the camera could be much worse.

Recording video is better than my g4. However, photos are better in g4

Coming from a LG G2, I am pretty happy with the Z5C. But if you have a Z3C, I think you'd be getting pretty much the same experience. It is unfortunate that the shutter speed can't be set manually in the standard camera app. I haven't tried 3rd party apps, as I mostly get the photos I need of my kids (also indoors) with Sonys app. Of course, blur depends on shutter speed which depends on the amount of lighting that you have - possibly I have more lighting where I live compared to the posters above.
On my G2 the problem was that it had OIS - knowing this, the phone defaulted to a slow shutter speed to take advantage of the OIS. Which obviously doesn't work when it is the subject and not the photographer's hand that is moving...
Will try Sports mode more myself after reading the suggestion above.

Luckily Sony's open source camera driver will allow to fix all the... strange decisions they've made in the default camera app.

The focus problem on Z1~Z3 finally get fixed and with camera 2.0 image quality is reasonable now, just the video quality still not clear enough which clearly a software issue. Sony tends to has realistic WB and exposure which I much prefer over Samsung/LG/Apple, others phone always with over saturated color(though some actually like it).
It's already the best camera phone without OIS I've ever used, overall it's still worth to upgrade. Sure it won't beat S6/G4 with OIS at low light. I understand at this price a new phone now have no OIS is very suck, this is my last Sony too if no OIS.

Agree. By far an away my biggest disappointment with this phone. I have now resorted to the machine gun principle - if I have to use this camera. Take loads of shots in the hope one will be OK. However my preference is to avoid using it altogether.
To my mind a decent phone camera has to be point and shoot, with a high rate of keepers in the shots. Unfortunately I find most of the pics from my Z5C are plain average. I have nothing good to say about it.

I bought Lg G4 very much for its camera, but my Nexus 6 still takes better pictures...........
First pic is from g4 and second is from Nexus 6. G4 is picking up sunlight and making pictures to bright......very dissapointed.

They look about the same to me. Try some different shots I guess.
I am quite impressed with G4 camera, beats the S6 edge and Priv we have.

You can see the sunbeam on the back of the chair on the G4.
Here is two other examples. First one from Nexus 6, second one from G4. Nexus 6 pic is much more vivid and clear, LG G4 is to bright and catches all sunlight on the picture,

Ohh yah I see it there. Have you tried dark shots with out sun light.
I don't have a Nexus 6 to compare but I do wonder if maybe you got a bad camera on a G4 (if that is possible).
Are you on the latest version too, M?
It may make a difference where you touch to focus too.

This is just different focus points. G4 has laser focus and probably focuses on another area. Indoor pictures are crap anyway especially when shot against bright windows.

Yes i am on Marshmallow. Still picks up every sunbeam there is, doesent matter where I focus. Here is another example. The sunbeam looks like a white mark across the picture, my Nexus 6 does not pick up that at all

You have full manual controls with RAW capability. Regardless of how auto works, tweaking manual settings will produce far better shots than the Nexus 6 would ever be capable of producing.
Now for the helpful less "fan boy sounding" response: LG tend to blow out highlights in the background to produce a proper exposure for the main subject.
Even the G5 looks like this will be the case, as sampled here
Personally, I think Samsung nailed the auto camera experience with the S6 generation phones. LG have more capability, but it's lessened by the fact most users are not photographers.
Kind of looking forward to the S7 for this reason, it brings back all the features I couldn't tolerate losing with the S6 and enhances the camera even more.
To fix your problem (particularly in environments like your photos)
Turn the brightness up to about 80% with auto brightness disabled
Switch to manual in the camera
Keep everything auto, but fiddle with ISO and exposure time.
Keep the ISO as low as possible while making sure you can take a photo without motion blur from hand shakes (1/30 is as slow as I go usually)
When it looks right on screen, take the shot.
If in doubt and you're feeling technogically empowered, enable RAW.

Thanks all for your replies. Its going back. I want a phone with a camera who can take ok pictures without having to fiddle with manual settings. I am no photographer and have no interest in changing settings for every scenario.

Good shot is it automatic or Manuel if Manuel than if u was try to ISO 50 and 4second exposure u can get gread pics u can also check my photos if u want

I went through my gallery to check indoor pictures. Definitely a faulty unit/optics/glass you have there, did not notice the same effect here.

Maybe you (OP) are looking at it from a wrong angle. I think the G4 camera just records what is sees. It's not its fault that there are sun rays. On the other hand, the N6 doesn't capture what there really is. Besides, the net is full of tutorials how to catch sunbeams. With G4 you get it out of the box.

This must be a problem with dirt on the lens or the protective glass, nothing to do with the camera, the camera is awesome. Could even be on the inside so it might be hard to remove without disassembling the phone.

Yeah the OIS is frankly terrible. I don't take any video with my G4 because of it.

Yep, looks to me like the lens had a smear or something on it.

I have 505 serial dual h818N. Having a vignette effect when on 60 fps mode. Some users reported that they have no issue like mine. Ois is terrible on my device IMHO.

I just own the G4 and I have to say hat video quality exposure and all that stuff its the best. maybe you need to learn a bit on how to use a proper camera.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto Z2 Force come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

So far I'm pretty pissed off with the camera. I recently tested the LG G6, Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 5, and now the Moto Z2 Force which I was hoping would be my dream phone. I owned the Z Force and so far and a bit disappointed. The Camera seems to have potential but the software is terrible, at least on my specific device. The camera is plagued with shutter lag which really seems to take a toll on picture quality. Pro mode is what really upset me with only having the option of 1/4 for shutter speed as the longest time for exposure. I have taken a great deal of pictures to compare with the phones listed above, so far the Huawei Mate 9 has had the best camera in my opinion. Obviously, this is totally objective as views will change per individual. I am by no means a photography expert, but I am always in search of a great camera in a smartphone. The biggest reason for my angry toward the quality of the Z2F camera is the retail cost of the phone, I really thought this would be a camera I would have loved. It seems like I may wait to see how the Essentials Phone turns out and am very curious about the Nokia 8, both in terms of camera. To date I think the use of a dual camera, one being monochrome and the other RGB, is the best implementation. Please let me know if the inconsistent shutter I'm facing is just a problem with my unit or if other's share it as well. I really had my heart/mind set on this phone being able to go toe to toe with others in its price range. Side note, the LG G6 wide angle lens was great for taking pictures, I was surprised that I liked the secondary camera being a wide angle lens as it allowed for unique perspective. I let go of the LG G6 because my father broke his phone and really thought the Z2F would be the phone of my dreams.
Update: Twist for camera sometimes hangs and after some time force closes. This has also happened on 2 occasions when opening camera app, viewfinder is black followed by hang and crash.

Camera shutter speed seems to be a stock app issue mostly. I have CameraZoom FX and that works better at taking the picture quickly. I do expect this to improve as the device matures and some updates get pushed out to it.
That being said, the overall photo quality seems to be pretty good overall. The S8 I am leaving does a better job of handling multiple light levels (like say bright window light in an otherwise dimly lit room), but I do think the Z2F has some promise for sure.
I do agree that I think the shutter lag is very 2015.....so hoping Moto does fix that

I agree with this. The camera app is terrible. I came from the HTC 10 into this phone and the HTC blows it out of the water as far as camera quality goes, and I doubt there's any reason for that as far as the sensor/hardware goes There are also other apps that don't seem to access the front flash on this phone, I.E. Instagram, snapchat, etc. could be a driver issue or something, but motorola needs to get it together with the Android O update.

Has any compared picture quality with Open Camera and the google camera app?

Camera App Update
I just noticed that they added two features to the camera app. Object recognition and landmark recognition.They said that they included some bug fixes but did not elaborate. Hopefully they will continue to work on the app and image quality will improve as the phone matures. I think there is potential to improve low light photo's seeing that the black and white sensor should aid low light photography.
So far I am very happy with my photo's. I am a casual user and happy with the images. Realistically I do not think one can expect DSLR quality on a mobile phone. Maybe one day....

I've used several third party apps, and this camera is total trash compared to even my nearly three year old Galaxy S6.. I have to place dramatic Instagram-style filters on everything to hide how crappy this camera is.

I took this picture with full manual mode and it's quite good for me

It's only useful for its optical zoom.

Does anyone have problem with autofocus....? The autofocus on this device is absolutely terrible.

Google Camera port is your friend when it comes to the Z2 Force. Also, Snapseed is a great editor.

So, I'm reading through this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/themes/app-modded-gcam-hdr-t3735494 ; there seems to be no gcam available for Z2, which would be fully functional. Are you saying you solved this issue and have one that works? Perhaps you can post to the thread with your findings if you did?

Oh it's atrocious. I don't know how LG is satisfied with this compared to pretty much any other phone out there.

I don't think it's software. They're still using a 5mp lens. You know it's bad when an iPhone had a higher mp count than you. Once again LG continues to shoot themselves in the foot.

Yeah, I knew it was 5mp. I didn't understand when this was touted as such a high end camera phone, why they screwed the pooch on the front cam. I don't use it often, so it's not a deal breaker to me, but to sell phones you have to appeal to the masses. Snapchat and instagram are moderately popular I would say lol

Once I got it tweaked and Incorporated some of my favorite workflow, I'm actually pretty happy with the results. First thing I need to mention is I never leave an image as is, every shot can use some massaging. Second, the very first thing I recommend everyone do is set both "skin tone" and lightning to their bottom values. Seems someone decided to rename that atrocious skin smoothing to skin tone. Absolutely misleading. Once you do that and do a little processing, you can get some pretty good results.

Yeah, by all accounts is not a great front camera compared to most phones especially flagships. An $800 flagship device really should be better than this.
But I rarely use the front camera, so not a big deal to me.

It's a major step back from even the G4 and G5. There's really no arguing, it's just a bad camera.

I love this freaking phone!!! This is the only major thing I dislike about this phone. If the front facing camera was about as good as others, then honestly this would be like the perfect phone. It has everything else you could ever want and more.
At least this is mostly seeming to be a software issue from my experience. For example the Galaxy S7 and even then Galaxy S6 both had 5 megapixel front cameras too, but their front facing cameras were still really good! So LG could make this camera a lot better if they focus on it with their software updates.
Does anyone know a good place we can voice our opinion and thoughts to LG on the front facing camera? If we all voice our opinions somewhere LG can see and hear, then they are likely to do something about it soon.

It's gotta be better than the Nexus 6 Im waiting to shelve .....

my came out clean, not the best but its good. as a photographer so far the detail
during daylight the quality is good, evening shots, better use your rear camera lol, but then that paint look appears on both.

It does have the wide angle. I haven't noticed any poor quality with it. Like a previous post, I took the skin smoothing and light down right away, because I don't care about those things. Overall though, I'm happy with it. I don't use Snapchat very often though, so I'm not sure how its screenshot of the screen processing interprets it.

This. It comes with some high skin smoothing out of the box for some reason. Adjusting those makes things look very good.

It's not glamorous. I have no idea what softness people keep complaining about. If you look at those on a desktop and open the larger view, you can see way more detail than I would prefer people seeing most of the time, pores and lines and all. Those who are complaining about softness either haven't reset the weird skin smoothing settings to zero or... I have no idea what else they are expecting. No person I've ever shot a portrait of would ever want that much detail showing on their face.

I'm a photographer, I always apply a tad sharpening to any photo. But you can't sharpen what isn't there. The information has to already exist in the file. I also bump contrast a tad in B&W. Modern sensors come out too flat. The V30, my mirrorless, and my full frame DSLR, they all come out too flat. The dynamic range freaks are making images too boring and useless. Sometimes you just have to let things get clipped.

my V30 is arriving today, but the only thing that deferred me for so long was the horrid front facing camera 5mp vs 8mp or higher of others as well as no stereo front facing speakers.
LG is marketing this phone as a media production and consumption device, but it can't even output stereo audio out of its speakers.

Extremely Disappointed with the Camera

I come from LG G4 and the only reason to buy this phone was the camera for me and boy do I hate the goddamn camera on this phone! I loathe both the Rear and Front camera shots. I hate that their image processing is terrible. Their implementation of noise reduction algorithm is horrible for the front camera, and the lack of OIS doesn't help with the shots.
So I guess I am stuck with using pro mode - clicking RAW and processing just to avoid their horrible software implementation.
I just want to get rid of this phone or I prolly will end up using this as a backup phone just for its dash charging ! That is the only thing good thing about this device.

Dont you go for reviews prior to purchasing anything.
The camera isnt that bad, has got better with updates, and here at XDA, smartphones are a lot more than just a camera device.

you bought the phone because of the camera but didn't do enough research for it.
Most people buy this phone because of the Google stock feeling or the overall performance and dev support of the phone.
If you bought it just for the camera might aswel return it ^.^

Agreed with the users that have replied thus far. If you read enough reviews you would know the camera didn't live up to its hype post launch. That's not to say it's a bad camera by any means, but it should have given you a better idea of whether or not this device is for you.
If your primary purchasing factor is the camera, the Google Pixel or Galaxy S8 would have been better options.
Personally I don't find the camera to be that bad, it's really solid in good lighting as well, but to each their own!

The front camera is one of the better ones I've used, and the rear camera isn't "bad" (though could be better).

Who buys a phone for its camera? Its not a primary feature of any phone seeing how its so small it will never receive optimal amounts of light or have a large enough lens to get quality shots at all in any circumstances. Buy a phone for software not hardware. If hardware is nice consider it a bonus. A really good camera is only about 150 dollars. Just carry a nikon around.

Actually, OnePlus heavily marketed the camera; even making a note of it on the sides of the box. It's no surprise at least some people would have bought this thinking the camera was top-notch.

I come from LG G4 and the only reason to buy this phone was the camera for me and boy do I hate the goddamn camera on this phone...
I just want to get rid of this phone or I prolly will end up using this as a backup phone just for its dash charging ! That is the only thing good thing about this device...

It's a SMARTPHONE camera. It's never going to replace a DSLR. Its actually a good camera. I don't have a problem with the quality at all (though I'm an enthusiast Photographer and know that no phone camera will like a DSLR). Most of the reviews flame the camera as much worse then it really is. That being said... It's totally the OP's fault for there are 50 or more YouTube video reviews on the camera.
To say it's the worst phone you've bought... lol you sound bitter as this phone is the fastest, smoothest phone out there with the best battery and fastest charging phone out there. It's got a very good display, but not the best. I think that is really the only area this phone lags behind flagships... the display.

Im finding it about on par with my I7, slightly worse in low light but focuses much faster.
Worse than my note 8, better than my XZp

It's like the only device that had day 1 reviews from tons of known reviewers so you had all the time in the world to research about the product you're buying and yet you didn't. Yeah camera is crap compared to other flagships, we don't care, move along.

I don't mind the camera, it's decent.

How can you be "extremely disappointed" ?
I receive my OP5 about a week ago and is by far the best smartphone I ever had in term of photos.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S6 how he's a "one of the best photos taker". He has a better camera that the LG G4 if you read the reviews. The best part it's that I think the S6 has a decent rear camera and a awful front camera who made your skin like a doll. Do you know why ? Because Samsung use a simple trick to avoid the noise in the photos : blur all the picture in low light and we can tell that our phones are really good in low light. I can tell you that this phone is really, but really better that my previous S6.
But I have compared with a S7 too (the S8 have the same lens and is considered one of the best photos takers of the market) and a iPhone 6s. He out-performed well all this phones. I don't even talk about the front camera who is simply the best in the market.
The only issue with the rear camera is in the low light, but this can be fixed with the Pro mode or the Google Camera modded with HDR+.
