LG G5 Camera discussion thread - Post your pictures here !

The LG G4 was one of last year's best camera phone. Let's see what the G5 has in the guts with its dual rear cameras:
- 16 MP F/1.8 - 75° field of view - laser autofocus, OIS
- 8 MP F/2..4 - 135° field of view (ultra wide angle) - fixed autofocus

Are the manual controls fun to use?

same as using a G4

Here are pictures taken today unedited. Camera seems more than capable enough, if you want legit photos buy a dslr and call it a day.

Can someone who already has the device post couple of JPEG + associated DNG files both for the regular and wide angle cameras (big files can be shared via Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive) ?
I would like to know whether LG included a flat field correction in the DNG this time (it wasn't the case at the G4 launch and was addressed months later during the marshmallow release). I had to create one in the mean time but it wasn't addressing perfectly the issues.

I've seen your posts but no longer have the pre production model which is not the same as the retail version. In the UK, the retail launch has got delayed a lot. However, I should get a raw file very soon (in 24 hours). I'll DM link to dropbox when done.

The camera on this absolutely smashes my s7

Has anyone noticed or experienced the camera distorting in lower light condition or in conditions where the subject is not perfectly still?
Some of my photos look like they've been run through a really bad water colour filter or like they have been shot through a sheet of plastic (like a protective film over the lens, but it doesn't appear to have one on out of the box), in perfect daylight photos of still subjects (building/scenery) are stunning, with both the wide and normal camera, but if the subject is moving, the wide angel really struggles with the distortion type effect. In low light, the wide angle seems basically unusable if the subject is not perfectly still.

Next time try turning HDR off and see if that helps.

I'm going to try and give it a better test this evening, I think HDR was set to auto in that pic. I'm hoping you're right and changing that to off will solve this, it really does look software over hardware though, the Google Camera app seems to handle HDR processing better (although much slower than the camera on the G5, which is pretty instant, whereas my 5X took an age to process after the photo was taken). It's a shame the Google Camera app doesn't support the HDR mode when installed on the G5 and doesn't support the wide angle camera either so can't take a photo with that to do a direct comparison.

Nothing to do with HDR. The G5 went into night mode and held the shutter open longer. Go manual and fix the shutter speed.

The camera definitely hasnt been optimised yet in auto mode. Can tell by the way it selects a high iso in night shots. But I'm not worried as LG will sort this out in upcoming updates. I normally shoot in manual mode any way, and the photos are as amazing as I'd expect coming from the lg g4.
Really happy with this phone so far.

I use Manual Camera normally for anything other than quick shots (normally on night out, so in low light where I use auto mode for speed), the manual mode in the default camera app though I'm really impressed with, especially coming from Manual Camera, this is my first LG phone so I'm loving that being available out of the box. The photos I've taken where I haven't been in a hurry or in low or challenging light have come out amazingly well. I agree though the look of the weird "shooting though plastic" or almost water colour like effect that appeared on that shot I posted earlier definitely looks like a processing issue, I just wanted to post it to see if anyone else had experienced the same or if it was a possible hardware fault (although I didn't think it was, so was more wondering if anyone had a solution to it software wise).
Hopefully though it is just software and they fix it in later updates. So far I think I'm happy to keep the phone after my few days with it so far, it really is an amazing device, fast, great build quality (fantastic to hold), great sound and what they've done to the OS is nice too, just hoping for root at some point in the future too although I'm getting used to LGs customizations now, so that's not a deal breaker for me yet (it will be more in the future if updates to Android N are slow).

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto Z2 Force come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

So far I'm pretty pissed off with the camera. I recently tested the LG G6, Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 5, and now the Moto Z2 Force which I was hoping would be my dream phone. I owned the Z Force and so far and a bit disappointed. The Camera seems to have potential but the software is terrible, at least on my specific device. The camera is plagued with shutter lag which really seems to take a toll on picture quality. Pro mode is what really upset me with only having the option of 1/4 for shutter speed as the longest time for exposure. I have taken a great deal of pictures to compare with the phones listed above, so far the Huawei Mate 9 has had the best camera in my opinion. Obviously, this is totally objective as views will change per individual. I am by no means a photography expert, but I am always in search of a great camera in a smartphone. The biggest reason for my angry toward the quality of the Z2F camera is the retail cost of the phone, I really thought this would be a camera I would have loved. It seems like I may wait to see how the Essentials Phone turns out and am very curious about the Nokia 8, both in terms of camera. To date I think the use of a dual camera, one being monochrome and the other RGB, is the best implementation. Please let me know if the inconsistent shutter I'm facing is just a problem with my unit or if other's share it as well. I really had my heart/mind set on this phone being able to go toe to toe with others in its price range. Side note, the LG G6 wide angle lens was great for taking pictures, I was surprised that I liked the secondary camera being a wide angle lens as it allowed for unique perspective. I let go of the LG G6 because my father broke his phone and really thought the Z2F would be the phone of my dreams.
Update: Twist for camera sometimes hangs and after some time force closes. This has also happened on 2 occasions when opening camera app, viewfinder is black followed by hang and crash.

Camera shutter speed seems to be a stock app issue mostly. I have CameraZoom FX and that works better at taking the picture quickly. I do expect this to improve as the device matures and some updates get pushed out to it.
That being said, the overall photo quality seems to be pretty good overall. The S8 I am leaving does a better job of handling multiple light levels (like say bright window light in an otherwise dimly lit room), but I do think the Z2F has some promise for sure.
I do agree that I think the shutter lag is very 2015.....so hoping Moto does fix that

I agree with this. The camera app is terrible. I came from the HTC 10 into this phone and the HTC blows it out of the water as far as camera quality goes, and I doubt there's any reason for that as far as the sensor/hardware goes There are also other apps that don't seem to access the front flash on this phone, I.E. Instagram, snapchat, etc. could be a driver issue or something, but motorola needs to get it together with the Android O update.

Has any compared picture quality with Open Camera and the google camera app?

Camera App Update
I just noticed that they added two features to the camera app. Object recognition and landmark recognition.They said that they included some bug fixes but did not elaborate. Hopefully they will continue to work on the app and image quality will improve as the phone matures. I think there is potential to improve low light photo's seeing that the black and white sensor should aid low light photography.
So far I am very happy with my photo's. I am a casual user and happy with the images. Realistically I do not think one can expect DSLR quality on a mobile phone. Maybe one day....

I've used several third party apps, and this camera is total trash compared to even my nearly three year old Galaxy S6.. I have to place dramatic Instagram-style filters on everything to hide how crappy this camera is.

I took this picture with full manual mode and it's quite good for me

It's only useful for its optical zoom.

Does anyone have problem with autofocus....? The autofocus on this device is absolutely terrible.

Google Camera port is your friend when it comes to the Z2 Force. Also, Snapseed is a great editor.

So, I'm reading through this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/themes/app-modded-gcam-hdr-t3735494 ; there seems to be no gcam available for Z2, which would be fully functional. Are you saying you solved this issue and have one that works? Perhaps you can post to the thread with your findings if you did?

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Moto X4's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

With flash it's 5 stars. Works pretty good without. Works as good as my S8.

I took some test shots on my phone today, using 3 different camera apps:
- The Stock Moto Camera
- The Stock Google Camera from the Play Store
- Modified Google Camera found Here. MGCB_7.0H_C2API_Full_PXL2_v.1.4_60FPS_noburst_v3
I tested in a large room with the lights off, and sunlight coming in. There are lots of shadows and dark areas, as well as very bright spots. I tested with HDR Off, HDR On, and HDR Auto (if applicable). I also threw in a wide angle, for comparison. (spoiler: Ew).
Some things that surprised me, in no particular order:
- The Stock Moto HDR actually did a decent job at brightening up the dark areas, and giving the shadows a bit of color. Not a ton of extra noise, either. However, the window was still washed out.
- Stock Google Cam didn't offer anything the others didn't, and HDR On/Off didn't seem to do a thing.
- Modified Google Cam definitely helped with the bright spots, as those are the only 2 pictures that you could see out the window, but it also introduced a LOT of noise in the shadows and dark areas. This is a known side effect of HDR in low-light, as I saw the same effect on my 5x when using HDR+ in low light.
I may try a different Modified Gcam, and try to input the settings manually. Hopefully that will result in better pics, as otherwise the Stock Moto camera seems to be our best bet for now.

The stock camera app in normal picture mode is not using good ISO/shutter speed combinations in low light at all. Take some and check the info on your images. It always goes for high ISO and faster shutter speed. It stops on 1/15 A LOT, and seems to adjust ISO from there. Switch to Professional Mode and force a slower shutter speed, lower ISO and now they look much better. HDR on this app is garbage with those auto focus settings too. It works much better with higher quality images with less noise, which the auto focus is incapable of providing in any low light situations.

I did some more tests with the v4.0 AIO modified Gcam, and there wasn't a difference.
I went back to the v1.4, and took some pics at home. These were very low-light, with candles the only light source in the room. I noticed similar trends:
Stock Cam is VERY blochy when you zoom in.
Stock HDR seems to brighten the whole image, but isn't very, you know, dynamic.
Stock Cam is way less noisy/blochy when you zoom in. It preserves much more detail.
Modified Gcam using HDR+ does a MUCH better job handling the candle light in the pic, as the light source isn't overexposed.
I may do some 100% crops and share them tomorrow, but Stranger Things 2 with the wife is more important atm. #sorrynotsorry.

If I manually set the ISO to 1200 or lower, I can still take a good photo by manually adjusting the shutter speed to 1/15, 1/10, or even 1/8 (anything lower and it's blurred). This HW should be capable of blazing fast auto focus so there is zero reason it's setting the ISOs so high. High ISO = more noise, less detail. Fast auto focus should mean that lowering the ISO in low light will focus better, faster, with less blur from the slower shutter speed. Something ain't right here.

Yeah, you're right on this. I did some more test last night, and the most consistent seems to be the modified Gcam HDR+. It preserves more detail while keeping the noise down.
Basically, I feel like these are all just playing around with settings and apks that are meant for other phones. I know the Gcam software can work wonders, and I know the sensor/ISP/DSP/CPU can support more than what the stock Moto Cam is doing, but getting a modded Gcam apk that's meant for out phones would be fantastic. Unfortunately, it'll take someone smarter than me to piece it all together.

Coming from a much older S3, the moto x4 camera is WAY ahead.
I have a small laser projector that only outputs 63 lumens.
The S3 camera could never get a photo on the highest setting.
The x4 camera does it easily.
Apples and Oranges possibly, but the camera is not nearly as "bad" as some
reviews stated.

I had an S7 for work until recently. Hated it. Battery life is worse than X4, too much bloatware, and the fingerprint sensor on it suuuuucked. Rear camera was about the same as X4 but front was inferior. No contest. Get the X4.

Please think twice believing reviewers.
Most of them hated Moto X4's camera coz it has a sluggish and mediocre quality when it comes to depth (portrait mode).
BUT I can assure you that my Moto X4 performs on par with HTC 10 when it comes to ALL lighting conditions.
I took photos side by side and the quality is the same. I even found that the Moto X4 does NOT need to auto trigger HDR in the lowlight pic I took (HTC did auto trigger HDR).
Both HTC 10 and Moto X4 have minimal noise and really looks almost the same given that they are using a different ISP (SD 820 vs SD 630).
I'll try to upload both pics so you can check them as well.

Quick one from today.

The Galaxy S7 will definitely has a better camera quality BUT the X4 also has a pretty good camera so you won't get disappointed.
BUT I'd rather choose Moto X4 since it is a new device while S7 is already almost 2 generations older (S9 is coming).

Four low light examples. They were taken in hostile lightning codtions by Gcam HDR+. No tripod. The quality and the dynamic range is at the same level as Nexus 5x, Pixel 1.

Can you share a gCam version that you use. And setting ...I try few, but for me quality of stock camera photos is better. Thx.

Has Moto stock camera app improved picture quality? I haven't updated my camera app for a long time now, even the one that changed the app icon. Are there any improvements after updating the camera app on stock ROM?

Nops only changed the icon and microphone bug. Even the pink tint is still present in high ISO setting. forget HDR+

I think that the quality is little bit better using manual mode.

Agreed. I find setting a manual shutter speed cuts down on the oversharpening that usually occurs with low light shots. I use 1/30 second for most indoor shots. The photos are usually under-exposed and require some tweaking in Google Photos or your editor of choice. I'll take that any day, instead of automatic mode's tendency to over-expose and clip the highlights.

I've got to admit, I just got this phone today and was hoping it would be at least as good camera-wise as the Nextbit Robin it was replacing. I didn't think the Nextbit's camera was so amazing, but with the right manual controls I was able to nail decent shots with it.
This, I feel like the colors are oddly oversaturated and the sharpening is ugly as sin. I did also find that switching to manual helped a bit, at least with the sharpening, but what's with the clipping highlights so early? Does this camera sensor just suck when it comes to dynamic range? Or is it just bad software?
My phone hasn't had a chance to update yet so I was hoping new software might have come along to address the shortcomings, which is how I ended up in this thread.
Are there other camera apps which might improve things? I tried Open Camera, but it seems to just behave the same as the stock app with a different UI. Has anyone tried the ported Google Camera app?

I'm resurrecting this thread in order to address your original question, which is now irrelevant to you. Meanwhile, you've demonstrated (in this thread and others) that the G5+ does, indeed, have a capable camera module that's hamstrung by lousy software. But this is for those of us who are still wimps and not yet willing to unlock the bootloader.
As others have said (and I have too) just switching the stock camera to "pro mode" seems to reduce the oversharpening effects, but only slightly. Setting the shutter speed to 1/30 also helps in some low light situations.
However, my best luck has been with the Camera FV-5 app, which I bought years ago. In addition to allowing much more manual control, it also can be set to save images in .png format, and that seems to bypass more of the default image processing. (Unfortunately, it also means no EXIF data, so no info about exposure is recorded.)
Setting Camera FV-5 to save black and white images (Settings/photo encoding settings/color channels) also produces some strikingly sharp images that I find very pleasing. I'm sure many will not be interested in that option.
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Moto is now advertising the G5+ as having the "Most advanced camera in its class"?

One more app worth trying, whether rooted or not: FreeDCam. It's free and open source. It's possible to turn off denoising, resulting in a much sharper image. Some sort of noise reduction is still needed for most low-light images, though. Even without root, I'm getting much better photos now. For those who are rooted and have access to camera2 api, raw images are supported.
edit: after more experimentation, my enthusiasm for FreeDCam is waning, at least on unrooted phones. I think it still has a lot to offer those who have rooted. And it still produces incredibly sharp images in good light. But in low light, the noise is severe and I haven't found an effective way to deal with it. For now (until I root) it's either the stock camera in "pro" mode or Camera FV-5 for low light shots.

I was disappointed with the camera too when I first got mine, but I've recently discovered it's not the camera itself, but merely the software. I've been using the 3rd-party, free, ad-free Open Camera app by Mark Harman, available in the Google Play store, & it's heaps better! 2 more days to go before I got my hands on P20, will shot and compare image with P20, S7, OnePlus 5 and Sony A7 full frame without mention name on pics

P20 vs P10 portrait mode on
Below you can find a comparison on portrait mode quality between P20 and P10.
The photos where shot with portrait mode on and from distance of around 2meters. Same lighting conditions (basically shot in the same time).
The image is cropped a lot so you can see the difference in the detail level. Also the portrait mode recognized the face better and did a better job with the blur (cannot be seen in the sample).
I can also confirm that the low light performance is ... nigh and day difference. Overall, from my point of view, the camera upgrade is very much visible and worth it under most conditions.

Posted this as a separate topic but no feedback so far, as this topic is specifically about the camera I'm looking forward to feedback here
I'm in the market for a new phone and really interested in the P20, it ticks a lot of boxes for me.
However the most important thing for me is the camera: I take a lot of pictures of my kids - often indoors
I went to 2 shops to test the phone and noticed that the pictures came out sharp but dark. The light grey carpet turned out dark grey in many instances.
Only when tapping on the screen (and focusing on the carpet) the brightness was increased but then the focus of the picture was on the carpet instead of the overall picture I wanted to take.
Also the pictures were sometimes not consistent, taking a couple of pictures in a row produced different results.
I tried switching on/off different settings but pictures remained quite dark.
The night mode really took a good picture but asking my kids to sit still for 4 seconds is nearly impossible*
Same thing for the P20 pro, pictures also turned out darker then irl.
The S9 was in the shop as well and this phone actually made everything a bit more bright then irl but the pictures seemed more pleasing.
Where I really had to focus on the picture to see what was in the darker parts in the P20's pictures, the S9's photo revealed all without effort.
Although a samsung user for a long time, I'm not attached to the brand, I was in fact really hoping to make a switch to another brand but the test pictures I took are putting me off a bit.
Anybody else experience this? Any advice on which combo of settings to try?

Does the p20 have ois or not ? Some sites say it does ( like gsmarena ) others do not mention anything.

i would say that p20 dont have OIS because there is only EIS in movies (there is a crop when recording 1080p video).
if you want a good camera i would choose the LG G6. my girlfriend bought it in the same time as i bought my p20. LG G6 is now cheap as hell, it has OIS, wide angle camea (it worth more than zoom in P20). and even that selfie camera has only 5Mpix in LG there is an autofocus (p20 dont have autofocus in selfie camera). photos from p20 are overexposed, green color is unnatural.
and LG G6 got few days ago Oreo and even that Snapdragon in LG is slower than Kirin the Andrid on LG is buttery smooth (P20 is not so smooth).

It DOES have OIS on both lenses, up to 108030fps, after that, at 108060fps it uses EIS and at 2160p it has zero IS.
Get your facts straight.

I'we owned the LG G6 H870DS variant and I won't come back to LG too soon.
While all the other flagships received Oreo, the G6 was stuck on 7.0. And you know what is more frustating than that ? The annoying 7.0 bug in which the phone idle consumes more power than the screen on time ( which was resolved in 7.1 ).
Overall it was a great phone, but you cannot compare it to P20 which is a lot better than the G6 Also, camera performance was not stelar, I was not impressed.
P.S: G6 does not have autofocus on selfie camera, only HTC 10 does

Selfie camera does much better work in lg g6. The colora are better, not overexposed, you can tap the sceen for exposure balance.
I can say that p20 is not worth the money. I bought it because of the free bose headphones but without them p20 should have price of lg g6. Not more.

Camera is basically overhyped ..not better than even old s7 edge, pixel or HTC U11 unless you love over sharpening and oversaturation..Its worse mostly when you take photos of faces look like oil painting

I like the back camera. Can make some nice pictures that are good for making edits.
Night mode is also impressive.
Overall not disappointed.

For me, the camera has given pretty good results, the sharpening is good, but in night mode is oversharpened, colors may be a little bit intense, not saturated. In video is a deception just for the stabilization (i fix that with Photos app) and the selfie is good with enough light and if you go to snapseed and use the brush tool with -0.3EV. To summarize, is a great camera if you can spend time fixing its tiny errors, but if you don't, it's just what you can expect from a high-end smartphone this days.

I have a Honor 10, and i would like to change for a P20. Because photos are important for me...But i'm not sure... my question is , Is there a big difference (in photo) between the Honor 10 and the P20 ? Somebody already tried the Honor 10 and the P20 ? I see a lot of comparaison on the web always with different results...

I quite like the camera. There are some things to consider though:
- Master AI goes crazy from time to time (too much color) but does really help in other situations (e.g. automatic bokeh effect)
- Even with Master AI turned off there are occasions where the lighting and / or the subject lead to strange effects. E.g. sometimes the hair of our dog looks like a painting when zooming a little bit into the picture.
- The image processing tends to oversharpen
Overall I would say the Pixel 2 and even the S9 take good photos more constantly but for me the combination of screen size, device size, camera quality and battery life is best on the Huawei P20. I hope that they improve the mentioned problems or that a good Pixel Camera app port arrives (not much hope as we have a different processor)

Weak point of p20 camera is video recording ..If someone liek natural looking photos then this camera is not for them
