Stop hard reset when new SIM card - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello,
I'm currently travelling with a not yet unlocked Samsung S8. I got the unlock code but I am not sure what will happen when I'll put the new SIM card. I'm sure it will hard reset. Is there a way to block that?
Thanks.

So you have the code, but didn't yet unlock the phone? If you put a sim card it, do you expect the "enter unlock code" message to appear?

Yes. But since I'm travelling I don't want to lose everything because of an hard rester triggered by the new SIM

Insert a microsd card and put your contacts on there through backup. Or alternatively try it through the cloud. You can also make a backup which will authenticate by your account name.
So if your phone does a hard reset, it's back on it's feet within an hour.
Google drive will store your contacts list also, and your apps are registered in Playstore, also in your account name.
I migrated through several Sims and phones, and while it does consume some time, I always have it back in no time.
Flashed my phone 3 times and in-between a couple factory resets, and it looks just like when I had everything installed the first time.

Why would it hard reset? I've unlocked phones before and it didn't happened.

I believe there is a way to dial a special code to make the "enter unlock code" dialog to appear, then you can type in the code and your phone will be unlocked. Possibly after that it won't reset even after putting the sim card in.

[Q] no service

I have just received a Nexus 4 off ebay today. Said it was a month old, unlocked etc.
I got it for the Mrs. She powered it up, and inserted her O2 sim and it said "no service".
We haven't done a thing to the phone but turn it on. Is there a reason for this?
I've attached the software details.

Have you tried to set the Settings->Wireless&Networks->Mobile Networks->Network operators on "Choose automatically"?
It may have been set to another carrier by the previous owner.
Clicking set automatically doesn't seem to do anything. And when she clicks mobile networks, which usually shows a list, nothing happens.

Have you tried adding your APN manually

http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/chapter/595-04-how-to-set-apn-settings-for-the-02-mobile-network
Take the sim out and make sure its in properly, then re insert and reboot, and try again to find network, try choosing o2.
I had this problem and it just seemed to fix itself while doing the above
Wait is the IMEI present in settings?(don't post a photo)

It does come up with a IMEI when I go into settings. As you can see from the attached, there is no signal at all. I've tried mine and her sim. This phone looks brand new, the guy said he used it for a month, it's running 4.3. Everything works but this.

Did you update the APN or are you just going to keep telling us that the guy used it for a month and that it looks brand new?
Whats the point of even putting in an APN when I have NO signal and it can't even scan for networks.
Secondly, I think it's faulty. I noticed the sim tray isn't sitting flush, with or without a sim card inside. And more worryingly, I just tried the to add an APN, it didn't even save, and there is this rippling effect on the screen if I press the back of the phone, or front. It's in the exact same spot. Even holding the phone in the hand and gripping causes the effect, It's like an invisible stick is poking at the screen, distorting it. Hard to explain.
Maybe all this is irrelevant, but I'm suspicious.
Have you tried performing a hard reset? It could possibly be blacklisted, amongst other things.

Looks like the IMEI is blocked. This can mean the phone is reported stolen and therefore the IMEI is blocked.

Really? It's there a way I can check without first accusing this person?

one way, but i dont know if this will help you http://www.t-mobile.com/VERIFYIMEI.ASPX
heres another way https://prod.eie.net.au/portal/template/MYMIMEIInquiry.vm
Thanks for that. Both tests included a seperate paid one, show no problems, no blocked IMEI.
The only road I can think of to go down now is the whole unlocking bootloader, flashing other modems/roms etc.

is that micro sim working in another phone? if your sim card works in anotger phone, then the n4 itself is the issue. my first n4 i returned within a day, it wasnt reading any sim cards at all.
Both sims work fine in other phones. I'm so annoyed by this, it's near mint condition. This guy had to know it was faulty surly.

it could be the phone itself then. the n4 has a known issue with faulty sim readers. btw, was your sim cut down to a micro size or is it an actual micro sim?
btw, this simms works fine too
It's a proper micro sim. I just want to be sure that it's nothing my end before I start moaning and getting refunds. But at the moment I think there is no other option. Would trying to flash another radio make a difference? Or is it futile?

the radios might play a role for a little better or worse reception, but one wont not give you a connection and another will is highly improbable.
It's imei related. Since you stated it's present & not erased, that means it can't register with the network due to a possible blacklist.
Also micro Sims and normal Sims that are cut will both function in the nexus(I've tried both).

[Q] Bought a Stolen Nexus 4. Now what

Ok stupid me. I bought a Nexus 4 from a guy off craigslist. He turned the phone on and all functions worked. I didn't have the sim pin and nor did he so I was not able to insert my sim card and check. Once I got home, and put my sim card in the phone keeps deleting everything. ESN check on Swappa is clear. Now the guy does not pick up my calls texts and his phone is off. Am I stuck with a paperweight? What are the legal ramifications?

Is Bootloader unlocked? Are you able to boot into bootloader and unlock with a toolkit and flash factory images?

The phone is plain stock without any modifications. I will try and load a factory image on the phone. I just don't want the cops coming after me or someone capturing my data.

That is probably your only option since you don't know the sim pin
Unlock the bootloafer then flash factory image. Then pray for it dont be IMEI locked. Its sad when people scam us.

if the ESN/IMEI checks out with swappa you don't have a paperweight. call T-Mobile and register your device.
factory reset every and if it still isn't working try installing factory images.
you're only stuck with a paperweight if its reported stolen (which only works if the phone was bought from T-Mobile directly.) or if it doesn't work whatsoever

Lost phone

Hey guys,
I work in a shop and like two weeks ago one girl lost her S3 Neo there, as she never came back I would like to find her to return the phone. But I can't access to any info bcs phone is locked. Is there any way to remove password without performing hard reset? If i do that, she will lose all her data and is is highly unlikely that I will find something on her phone to identify her.
Also I have her SIM and and I'm going to try with her service provider if they have any information about her.
Thanks,

Can't you get the sim out, put it in another phone and call someone in her contacts list to let them notify her?

That won't work if the sim card is locked, though. And does anyone even copy contacts to the sim card anymore?

open phone without password

I am looking for a way to open my son's phone. He died 2 months ago and I would like to get his pictures and music off his phone. The problem is I don't know his login password I have tried several but did not work. I only have 2 more times I can try before his phone resets which I don't want it to do! I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I am not much of a technology person. I am just a very sad mom who would like to unlock her sons phone:crying: Can anyone help me? his phone is a droid razr m.
Thank you,

Unfortunately I don't think that it is possible
unless bootloader is unlocked?
Is there a SD card? it's possible that some photos are on that,
if it's not encrypted, you can remove the sd card, and us an adapter to connect to pc

Just curious is the phone service still active on the phone? If it isn't remove the sim card. It is located on the side opposite of the power/volume buttons the micro SD card is right next to it under the same panel. Be sure to power the device off before removing either cards! The only reason I say remove the sim if there is no active service I have seen Verizon try to lock a device out if it has a not active sim card in it
There are a couple of ways that it is possible. The best way is to log in to the device manger via the computer hopefully you know his email address and password or he set the computer that he would use to auto login into his gmail account that is attached to his phone.
Link to device manger

Just what ever you DO NOT FACTORY RESET the phone.
Check this site for a few more possible ways to unlock/bypass the Lock screen.

Once again DO NOT FACTORY RESET OR WIPE THE PHONE!

If there's a pattern lock on the phone I might have a way to unlock it but it would require the phone to be rooted at least, preferably bootloader unlocked (but not essential).

Protect Galaxy S10 Plus from Factory Reset how to?

Honestly I want to understand how to protect phone from someone who get my phone to factory reset and setup with his own account. What is best way to setup and protect phone from this happening?
I know if you want to reset you have to receive email from samsung one time verification, which is linked to my google account. So for that moment if you want to reset go to email verify and it will reset. This is so stupid. Maybe I'm doing wrong with this? I'm using email on phone so how to protect this?

so, if your phone has a lock screen on it and someone ends up with it and is wanting to use it for themselves or sell it or whatever, so they want to factory reset it, the phone has a FRP (factory reset protection) built in to it. There are ways around it to get the phone to boot which i wont get into, but i will say that it requires wiping all user data from the phone first, so the most valuable asset about the phone, your data, is secure as bone stock
But how to protect phone from FRP in wrong hands?

YOU CAN NOT!!!!!
I know it's scary, but even the infamous APPLE security can be bypassed!!
If a person with the time or skills gets a phone, they can reset, unlock and use the phone, or sell it....
And if the data you have is not encrypted they can have access to all that before the reset if they want.
It's like asking, How do you stop a professional car thief..... The manufactures will keep trying but the crooks will keep learning....
Hell, even reporting it STOLEN does nothing. A lot of people have the information needed to change the numbers it uses to register on networks...
