Bluetooth on Android O Beta - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Ever since opting into the Android O beta, my Nexus 6p has been working fine, except for connected to my car via BT. It connects, but just shows 'Unknown Artist' for any kind of track info, and if I switch playback apps (for instance, from Pocketcasts to Google Play Music), my phone disconnects from the car for a second or two, connects again, and still doesn't work. The car in question is a 2016 Mini Cooper S. Anyone else seeing issues like this? Works fine on 7.1.2.

ive got the same issue vw polo. audio plays via bluetooth but no artist info it just shows im connected to 6P and skip track controls dont work just mute and volume

Yeah, I don't even get audio. Nothing actually plays, car displays "unknown artist".

I have this as well on a 2017 toyota, calls etc work fine, just music dips out

Thanks for the setting tips, I'll try them out tomorrow and report back.

No luck, same issue persists. I even tried usb-c to usb-a, but my Mini doesn't recognize it as an audio device that way Time to get a new head unit possibly.

No luck, still 'unknown artist' and no audio, even though my phone thinks it's connected and playing.

Do you have this issue on 7.1.2 as well? Don't forget Android O is still in "beta" and I wouldn't be surprised if the BT is a little screwy still.

Everything works fine on 7.1.2, I had to decide what was more important: working car audio or a much faster OS experience. Hopefully this is something that's either fixed in the release of O, or something my car manufacturer can patch into their system.

Not sure if this will help but my car seems to have pretty good luck with this technique and BMW/Mini ICE systems are similar. I use the aac codec keeping everything else default. I've had the issue a well where it's playing on my phone but not the car; the info also doesn't show. Restarting the phone right before starting the car or soon after seems to be relatively effective as it would then connect after the restarts and actually play the music correctly and show the info.
Not the best solution but hopefully this ends after the final is released.

Hi! I hope this helps. It seem like changing the setting (unchecking) for AAC audio helps with the issue. This seems to be a new feature in Oreo, so go to Bluetooth settings and in the little gear next to device it will popup with a couple of options, uncheck AAC.

Initial A2DP findings

Using the M3100 with the itech clip S35 Headset
firstly i've been using the fit4cat tweaker which has an A2DP quality improvememt tweak - unfortunately the tweak makes the quality worse so i've tuned it off and the music quality is not too bad when playing through my car stereo. However, I need to try some decent headphnes with the unit because the ones supplied sound very tinny!
Secondly, when you first pair the device, media player plays through the headset ok. If you then go out of range, when you return the headset re-pairs ok for the phone but the media player doesn't and it plays through the loudspeaker. You have to enter BT settings and recheck the stereo music option to have the sound through the headset again. Anybody getting this with the same or other headsets?
Thirdly, I have the S35 outputting through my car stereo. When people are calling me they can hear an echo (of themselves speaking as the sound comes out through the car speakers). There is some sort of delay i suppose but this is very annoying. I'm not sure why its happening because when I tried the headset using my Sony Ericsson W800i there was no such echo!
therfore, is the echo problem an A2DP thing (as the w800i does not support it and this works ok) or is it a m3100 thing? To test this I could turn off A2DP and ry the headset again - is this possible?
any suggestions appreciated
I have the Jabra BT620s headphones and I have indentical problems.
After install all works well but as soon as you disconnect media player just plays via the phone speaker
at least you guys get it to work once. WMP never plays through my iPAQ bluetooth headset. AVRCP controls work fine though. TCPMP plays fine through the bluetooth headset as long as I pair it up before I execute TCPMP. This is exactly how it worked with my 8125.
The WMP issue is very strange and is likely yet another example of the lack of QA testing in the A2DP portion of the TyTN's implementation. I would expect that these issues will all be fixed in a subsequent TyTN ROM update.
I'm getting on ok with this
quality is pretty good both using the headset with my own sony ear buds. Vast improvement over the itech supplied ear buds.
A2DP - no skipping during normal playback and it works well - quality is not an issue through the car stereo either - not bad at all . I've even been listening to music over A2DP and running sat nav using a GPS BT receiver. A slight pause in music when GPS connects but then all runs well.
My only 2 gripes are:-
1. When you disconnect or go out of range of the headset, it reconnect perfectly with the phone application. This isn't the case with the wireless stereo. I have to enter BT settings, uncheck the wireless stereo setting, save then recheck the setting before it reconnects. Slightly annoying but accesptable (for now)
2. the echo using the headset through my car stereo. People calling me can hear themselves again (about a 0.5 second delay) through the car speakers! Just to repeat my earlier post, this does not happen with my W800i. not sure if its an A2DP problem or something else.
Similarly here, I don't seem to be able to make A2DP (and the handsfree profile, for that matter) work.
Using HTC and an Itech clip, I am able to pair the "wireless stereo" and then play music for some 10 seconds on the GS Player, after which the Wireless Stereo symbol disappears from the top bar and the connection is interrupted. I actually believe that the Itech clip is 'shut off', as I have to turn it on again.
When I try to reconnect the headset, it just won't work and the whole machine is slowed down. Only a soft reset helps.
I hope this is a ROM problem (and not mine) and it'll be fixed soon...
WMP and the Itech clip work fine for me, with the current German ROM.
a2dp issues w/th Hermes
With the CHT9000 WWE rom I had the wireless stereo drop off after about 1 minute, then I would have to reconnect. I flashed to the other dopod WWE ROM (latest) and the problem is gone....sound is comparable to my prophet. Reg tweaks suggested in other forums definetely make the sound quality worse for either ROM version. I think further updated ROM's will improve A2DP reliability (or someone may find a reg hack)...as with the prophet A2DP it just takes time.
Hi guys, I've got the vario ii and the Sony Ericsson HBH-610.
I can add the headset fine and make calls through it, but I don't know how to get the music in wmp to play through it.
If anyone has a few mins spare and could explain it for me I would be really grateful
Headsets..HBH 610...
With my CHT 9000 I use an OMIZ 5660...works great for calls and wireless stereo. I don't have any other headset to compare it to (since I only have used this brand)....I believe that if your "options" do not list wireless stereo then you can't use the A2DP function on your device, at least as it is designed to be used.
I'm not aware of a one-piece headset that supports A2DP that is available (all should have either 2 headphones or two wired ear plugs)..
THE ONLY WAY, I FIND :
I have a 590A Plantronics Bluetooth HeadSet
You must refresh Services of your iTech or your Plantronics !
Go Parameters, Bluetooth, Select your Headset, Refresh.
Then reselect services and Save !
Each time you lost the link (Bluetooth turn off or ...) you will have to Refresh, reselect and Save !
I am searching for a Solve but not find another !
I forget something else !
It is the same thing with my Bluetooth GPS (GNS).
I have a spv m3100 and jabra bt620. They both work like a dream most of the time apart from having to go into bluetooth settings each time I want to connect to the stereo headset option.
I have noticed that when in my garden or at home (a quiet environment probably) that I have excellent streaming but when I am walking around, particularly in built up areas like shopping centres, high streets, tube trains, that there is some loss in the streaming which would seem to point towards some kind of interference.
Why the wireless stereo is set as mono as standard I can't understand. I'm sure its to do with improving the streaming quality, but they are supposed to be STEREO!!! Also I set the quality to 58 instead of 48 and there was a definite loss in streaming quality so I switched back to 48.
The AVRCP also works brilliantly in WMP.
The wireless connection also plays havoc with the bluetooth stereo connection with the buffering of stereo constantly dropping. Also noticed that AVRCP wont work with TCPMP, but as there seems to be some major issues with TCPMP and the Tytn I have uninstalled it for the time being until the guys at CorePacket come up with a fix

So far A2DP has worked fine for me with my Nokia HS-12W. I have applied some registry settings and optimised my SD card and so far it has played with hardly a skip. Definitely better than my previous BA with WM5.

This is the biggest problem for me with my M3100 at the moment. I'm guessing it will only be fixed by an updated\alternative ROM(?!), any ROM's out there I could try that might get round this problem??

This is probably headset dependent because with my Nokia HS-12W if i need to reconnect i just press the Audio button and it re-establishes the A2DP connection. No going to BT settings at all.
Interesting, can you just confirm what you mean by the Audio button. Is that just hitting 'Play' in WMP?
Thanks
No, the Nokia has a Music key (not Audio, my mistake) which switches from A2DP to the built-in radio. So if i have lost the BT connection pushing the Music key to select the Audio player will re-establish the connection and music is streamed to the headset. You will see the A2DP icon on the today screen when it has connected and get the chime in the headset.
Ok, thanks for that.
Just one last point, if the connection is lost while music is streaming, does the audio switch to the phone speaker instead??
My problem is I'll be listening to music on the subway then or some reason I'll loose the connection (interferance, low battery...whatever) and immediately music starts coming out the speaker, much to my embarrassment!
Thanks again!

[Q] bluetooth headphone don't work with Netflix app

Motorola bluetooth headphones work perfectly while listening to music but not while trying to play a movie in Netflix app. The audio is heard through the external speaker. any ideas?
same issue problem here with external bluetooth speakers
not working here too....
I guess it's an app problem. May be Netflix needs to send the output to the default audio output device instead of the (hardcoded) speakers?
I use a mac and had the same problem. So I used the Line In app for mac and Sound Flower.
Once Soundflower is installed, go into the mac sound settings, and change output to Soundflower (2ch) or (16ch). Whichever you want
Turn on the Line In app, and divert the Soundflower channel to the Bluetooth headset.
The sound quality is crap, but it's a work around if you need it. Also, my headset turned off a few times after about 15 mins of use. Guessing the mac or headset is recognizing a signal since it's kinda sent sneakily. So it probably registers as idle.
What does a MAC's BT issue have anything to do with Windwos phone's problem?
BTW, I did some testing. Even with NoDo update, using the built in Zune Video player, I can't send the audio via A2DP to a BT headset. So, it seems the limitation is inside WP7 OS. There is NO A2DP support for any video players.

Bluetooth Audio Support?

Does the Nexus Player support Bluetooth audio? I'm designing an HTPC for my folks and I'd like to go as cordless as possible. The speakers are across the room and are Bluetooth-capable.
Has anyone tried BT audio with the Player?

I tried Some headphones jabra revo and could not get them to show up when discovering
I tried with the Vamp and could not get that to show up when discovering either. I was hoping to do something similar, really hope this can be added with a firmware update or custom rom.
Couldn't get my bt skullcandys to connect either
Same here, cant find my logitech bluetooth audio receiver. This is huge disapointment but i hope google hears us and can fix this with an update.
Pairing Successful!
I found a workaround to pair my LG HBS-830 since doing a regular bluetooth search in the nexus player doesn't detect any headphones.. However, I'm now looking for another workaround to actually route the audio to the headphones!
To pair your headphones, just install ES File Explorer, and when you open it, there is an option to use bluetooth to connect to other devices in order to transfer files. However, when you do a scan for devices, the headphones actually show up (when set in pairing mode), and by clicking on it, it will automatically pair and appear in the nexus player's list of paired bluetooth devices.
By switching your headphones off/on, it automatically connects to your nexus player and even shows connected under the list of bluetooth devices, however no audio is routed to the headphones by default.. it is still routed to TV speakers.
So here you go, pairing is done.. let's now try to route audio to those headphones!
Hope this helps!

I just installed SoundAbout on my nexus player.. I tried routing the media audio to my connected A2DP Bluetooth headset, but unfortunately I'm not getting any sound
Besides, the application is throwing some exception every time it's started.. maybe this is the reason..
I literally just hooked my player up for the first time and the very first thing I tried to do was connect my jaybird x headphones to it and they won't connect. I just assumed since the box had bluetooth and was an android device that it would support bluetooth audio. My quick search just now has revealed there is no bluetooth audio function enabled :crying: I got this explicitly for this function, so this is useless until someone finds a work around or google enables it. Anyone want to buy a brand new N player from me?
I'd try this trick from the FireTV forum but don't have the time right now.

ES File Explorer can only pair your A2DP bluetooth headphones with the nexus player.. Make sure you set your headphones in pairing mode before you do a scan for bluetooth devices.. Once found, just click on it and that's it, pairing will be made immediately.

Okay so, I found out that the current SoundAbout released on the Google Play Store is still not compatible with Android 5.0. However, they added the support for that in the latest beta version. I'm unable to post the link, so just search for "SoundAbout beta" and you will get it from their official user board.
I tried sideloading the beta app on the nexus player.. Good thing: no more exceptions showing up.. Bad thing, still unable to route audio to headphones even when forcing media audio to use A2DP bluetooth.. plus, playing videos like youtube simply fails!
I tried that SoundAbout app too - but no luck.
I can't believe they don't support Bluetooth headphones. The only reason I was still using the Roku 3 is because the remote has a audio jack. I thought I could use the Nexus Player with Bluetooth headphones :/
Android M has got native support for A2DP Bluetooth streaming. You can flash the developer preview right now or wait for the release version in October/November. I wish Lollipop had this feature for AndroidTV to start with.

Marshmallow 6.0 bluetooth headphone problems

headphones: beats studio wireless
2.4ghz band stopped working when headphones are connected
-temporary solution: switched to 5ghz band. no issue
netflix would buffer to 99%, audio would start playing but screen was still buffering
-temporary solution: turn off headphones, let video play, turn headphones back on
kodi, hulu and youtube worked fine.
overall i was pretty happy with my experience. im most proud to say that the nexus player is not plagued with the audio lag that come with other devices.
I've had issues with BT headset quality too, since trying post Marshmallow update.
It would have of course been best, if there was a headphone jack in the remote, like Roku and Nvidia Shield have.
It seems the use of a BT headset, somehow puts a burden on the overall Wifi connection of the device, or something. Given you found 5Ghz works better. With Roku and Shield, the headphone jack works great no matter the connection, if you can get it to play on the TV, it will play with no issues via the wireless headphone jack of Roku and Shield.
I don't know why Nexus Player BT headset audio is so unstable. But it's disappointing. That the claimed benefits of Marshmallow for the Nexus Player, are found to be less than stellar once put to use.

I just got the OTA update to 6.0 and yes, while I was thrilled to get bluetooth headphone capability this problem with Netflix takes the fun out of it. I'm not convinced it's really buffering, I think it's just refusing to switch to the video framebuffer output for some technical reason when the bluetooth audio sink is selected, so the buffering spinner never goes away.

It's surprising how well this works in terms of being consistent and repeatable (usually these kinds of tricks result in hanging or crashing if you use them more than once), but unfortunately it only works until you have to use the UI to skip or even pause, then it's gone and you have to do it again.
Update: There is also a bluetooth audio problem with Kodi under 6.0: While UI sounds and at least some local files play back fine with bluetooth audio, in certain other streams, including all the YouTube videos and World News Live channels I tried, bluetooth audio is absent unless you do the above trick where you connect the bluetooth device after it starts playing.
The symptom is almost the exact opposite of what you get with Netflix in that, unless you do this trick the video streams but the audio doesn't, where in Netflix the audio streams but the video does not appear.
It's also pretty ridiculous that there is no way to disconnect a bluetooth device from the Nexus side, which means that once it's paired, the headset will connect to the player whenever you turn it on. Which is irritating if you have other devices you want to use it with, like phones and tablets -- all of which do let you disconnect a bluetooth device without unpairing or turning bluetooth off.

Bluetooth with Android Oreo Final

With the final Oreo final, is anyone still having the BT issues from DP4? I think the issues still exist for me (playing music over BT in the car) but so far, simply turning the bluetooth off and then back on seems to fix it; this was not the case during DP4.
Yes, lots of issues with BT audio in the car for me. Doesn't work at all.
BMW 2-series, 2017
I'm trying wiping the phone entirely to see if that'll fix it.
Yeah, it auto connects to my head unit but doesn't play audio. Opening up Bluetooth, it shows the name of the head unit and says "connected (no audio)".
I have to unpair from my head unit and re-pair. Then it works normally.
Still annoying.

May be an isolated issue related to the new audio codec. Everything is working the same for me in all my cars. I would dig around in Dev Settings and try toggling some of the BT audio settings. There are at least 6 BT settings and a BT logging tool there. For example, under BT Audio Codec there are MANY different codecs to choose from. Mine is using the default SBC now. I would start there. May be an easy fix. You may also RTFM (haha) and see which BT audio codec is preferred by this BMW head unit. @dan_delaney
