Hi,
I'm currently still on the Galaxy S4 i9505, running a ported GPE firmware.
Sadly, Samsung never came through with the Galaxy S5 GPE, so I'll have to make a difficult decision for my next Smartphone.
I was hoping for the new Nexus, but it's just too large for my taste. The Moto X 2014 is a great phone, but the small battery and less than perfect camera are making me a bit reluctant to buy it. Sony Xperia Z3 is a good device, but they have never been the fastest updaters. Also, the Camera on the latest Sony phones is not so great, the sensor might be OK, but Sony kills details with their over-aggressive noise cancelling tech.
So, that leaves me with the "old" Nexus 5 (old processor, small battery and mid-range camera) or one of the Galaxy S5 models.
Now here's my problem: I could get the Galaxy S5 SM-900F, or the S5+ SM-901F. The 901F is the obvious choice, because it comes with the newer Snapdragon 805 SoC. However, I'm not planning on using Touchwiz for more than 5 Minutes, so I need a phone with good CM/ASOP support. I'm a bit scared, that the S5+ will be a "niche" product and won't get many devs. Since Google Play Edition probably won't be happening for the S5 in any of it's shapes, that's my only chance.
Now, what do all of you think?
Do I have a chance with either of the S5 models or should I rather comprmised and go with the Moto X 2014 since that has a clean android interface and will get updated at about the same time as the GPE devices? Might there still be a GPE Galaxy S5? Will Samsung eventually relent and slim down Lollipop and tighten their Update schedule? Rumours point at a 2014 release of Android 5 on the S5 and Note 4, but does that include the new S5+?
Thanks for your ideas!
Get the 901F, I have it for about a month and it's the best phone I have ever used you won't be disappointed
Thanks. I'm not worried about the phone performance, but about dev supporz, from Samsung and from XDA...
Has this been rooted, debloated and/or Cyanogenmodified yet?
Plus is a wasted space tbh. G900F is the way to go in term of develompent. Roms. Programs and so on.

From Samsung, no worry, it will come as for others products.
From devs support here on xda, there's nothing yet:
- root is ok (see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/sm-g901f-to-s5-how-to-root-t2882104)
- custom recovery not properly yet (only one chinese version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55667472&postcount=175)
but it does not support aroma interface
- custom ROM does not exists yet
If you only want custom ROM with S5, choose G900* model but product is not as good as G901F.
If not, best product is G901F but need to wait for Devs.
Best regards
Franky

bear in mind
once you flash cyanogen or anything not touchwiz based. you losed camera functionality. 120fps slow mo and 4k will not be in cyanofgen as the samsung camera app is based on the touchwoiz framework
I can live with losing slow motion and 4k. What I really need is HDR in Google Camera. This is a problem on the S4...do you know how the S5 does here?
I really y hate Samsung for dropping GPE devices, and Google for not making an updated Nexus 5...?

HDR works in google camera. apparently though the quality isnt as good as stock as per usual
well thats what ive heard anyway
personally id rather wait until the camera CM provides can match the stock in terms of modes. or google camera can use extra modes
Never ever ever ever go with Plus-phones from Samsung. They never have as much development as the non-plus versions.

That's what I'm afraid of.
Well, I'll wait a bit longer, tilp the official Lollipop rollout begins, maybe there will be some surprises. After all, there is that picture of the S5 running stock Android on www.android.com which might mean there is a GPE phone coming...

Hi, you are thrue, but 900F will be stopped and replaced by 901F in europe, so devploment would come quick
And snap 805 on 1920 screen geave a beast ! ^^
We already have the first custom rom for 901f with tw or nova launcher and most important fully debloated. Check the android development section.

why do devs never buy plus versions? also why cant they dev for phones they dont own?
The problem is some of us dont have a choice, EE is by far best provider in uk and they no longer supply 900f, much of europs is also exclusivy 901f now.
at&t sprint etc. got own section on site but not 901f.
Before I've got my OPO I have owned nexus 1, 2, to nexus 5, so basically I've kinda used to fast update, unbloated OS and speed that nexus gave.
OPO on the other hand is kinda like nexus. It has cm based, good battery, screen, and speed. that's why I get this.
But when marsmallow comes out, I really felt left out, like I really regret by getting OPO on the first place, because I think It will not come to OPO.
And now, thank to awesome dev for bacon, we have masrmallow homemade, omni, cm13.. next will be slim and teameos, and possibilty of oxygen 2.1 or 3 hopefully..
It's like by having OPO I can choose for aosp based, or cm based, or oxygen based. you can choose kitkat, lolypop or marsmallow.
Now we got Op2, opx, nexus 5x, nexus 6p.. even though they all have better hardware, do you guys think it will be lots of rom choices like OPO has? please give your feed back
and to sum up.. I am happy with my OPO afterall
you shoudlnt feel left out of latest for this device atlst... it has got dev support as good as a nexus might get... marshmellow has already strted to become more bug free n daily driver.
We can just hope this continues after official support cycle ends next year
Even though I "want" Nexus 6P, there is not really some advantage for me to change my OPO. I really like it.

There's a thread already here for opinions on the Opo,

Hello everyone, i just wanted to ask is S7 edge getting 9.0 update? If not will it be possible to port 9.0 from Note FE cause its almost the same as S7 edge? Tanks ?
Unfortunately, S7 and S7 Edge are not getting Android Pie ? .. and bout porting 9.0, I really cant tell. It's not my domain of expertise, but I hope someone start doing it already cuz porting is all what xda developers bout.

But this gives a little bit of hope... Or it is fake, who knows...

Wow, well that's odd
I really doubt that there will be a official 9.0 "Pie" release for the/my/our beloved S7 Edge. If for no other reason than this insane policy of 2 major android updates per device. Plus, Samsung- with their lackluster sales/support for flagship devices- wants to sell new phones to boost profits- which, for flagship devices- has suffered big time. They are not too concerned about retaining existing customers.
One can only hope/pray that some developers will be able to port Pie for us. One thing is for sure, based on the rumors of what the S10 will offer- and COST-, I just might keep my S7E a lot longer, even if I only get to keep rooted Oreo.
Wait and see...
It's common for the mobile manufacturers to test the new firmware on some of the older devices. This does not guarantee that it will see the light of day.
what u mean rooted oreo i got oreo on my s7e will my phonevbe ok n just stay on oreo or will i have issues?
Hi, I would like to purchase a new phone soon or later and I still cannot decide whether OP6T is worth buying, I condider OP7 more expensive and OP6T is right in price where I would expect my future phone. Can it be my new daily driver for several years? Thank you
Had same dilemma 6t or 7! for me it wasn't really much of an improvement to justify the extra picked up a mint unlocked 6T for 249 still a grate phone and will be for a while yet plenty of development going on , unless willing to shell out for the pro then 6T is the one,

I'm happy with my 6T and I haven't seen any compelling reason to upgrade to a 7 or 7 Pro. I'm running the beta, which gives me a peak at new additions before they are rolled out to the public release and my phone is running great.
The 6t is a excellent choice.
I'm loving my 6t, granted I stepped up from a Moto e4 plus.. so a big jump. I haven't really found anything that truly disappoints me to the point of wishing I had something different or newer.
Thank you so much for answers! And what about end of support, is there any year when the phone stops being supported with updates?

Considering that that OnePlus just rolled out security updates and feature updates for the OnePlus 3 thru 5 this week, I'd say you've got a few years of updates to go before EOL
I have had rooted phones since the LG g2. Stuck with LG up until I made the mistake of getting the k20 plus and, lastly the V20. LG broke too many promises. I and, others hung LG up. We were stuck with being able to trust another manufacturer and, hope that source codes, etc be released so that development could be active. I don't know if you plan to root or run mods or anything, if you do this device won't let you down. It is virtually unbrickable. Excellent daily driver that surpasses all of my previous devices.
I bought 6T and have no regrets
OnePlus 6T still rocken!

What about camera?
I too will be buying a 6T from a friend who keeps changing phones so I'm hopefully getting a good deal. Is the stock ROM great or is there some sweet custom ROMs that you think I should try? This probably the wrong thread to ask that.
