Does my ideal phone exist?

Ok folks, i might be in the wrong spot, and yes, it's a bit off topic. But i seek your input non the less.
I currently rock a N910F. I'm extremely happy with it, apart from the fact that it gets to big sometimes. At home or in the car it's a non issue, but on the go, in the city one Handed handling is really sub optimal.
So I'm seeking a new/secondary phone. Basically any flagship to date is rather unimpressive imho. The features i seek:
- under 5.5 inch (around 5 would be ideal)
- 1080p display (less is grainy, more drains battery)
- big battery (around 3500mAh or more, bonus points for replaceable)
- flagship level performance (no SD820 i'm aware of, but 4/6GB Ram would be great plus a decent SoC)
- Some kind of development (Any AOSP'ish roms or at least some options for root are a must)
Basically a Android Version of a Iphone SE. Small form-factor with latest specs (in the iOS world ofc). What i don't want are 4k screens, 1500mAh batterys and Touchwiz :cyclops:
Currently, the OnePlus 3 seems close, although at the top of what size i'd want. The Moto G4 Plus or what it's called seems great too, although performance is a unknown.
So, what would you buy for big battery + flagship level performance in a small formfactor? Price is not relevant atm :good:

Just get the SGS7. It has a 5.2 inch display and is very one handed friendly. Personally, I would stick with the Note 4. I came from using a SGSII for 4 years, the reason I kept using my SGSII for so long is that I haven't complete my game of Asphalt 6. So when I finally completed Asphalt 6, I went for the Note 4 N910C. I got use to the size of it so easily and now I don't think I can ever get use to using a device with a smaller display.

Nice idea, but i'd say no to the S7. The normal S7 is only 3000mAh (which is rather big by todays standards) but the 2560 screen draws power like nothing else (the N4 has the same problem with around 3h SOT)...
Plus touchwiz. The Edge has a bigger battery, but on having handled it, the edge screen makes it impossible to handle (for me anyways). In addition to all this it's rather pricey. I agree that it's a great phone, it's just not what i'm looking for currently.
Also, yes the N4 is really great. Still one of the best phones i had to date. But there are more and more situations where it's simply to big

In that case check out the Huawei P9! That is a pretty nice device with great specs! However you will have to install the Google Now launcher from the Play Store as it runs on Huawei's EMUI, which doesn't have an app drawer.

battery is not all about size. it is also about ROM optimization.
so I think most current flagship will be fine for you.

Well you haven't mentioned any price, so I'm supposing that you've no budget restriction,, in that case HTC 10 is a good option. Small, great development and all. Otherwise like you already know OnePlus 3 it is. Moto G4 Plus is basically kind of an entry level phone really.

Honestly, processor and RAM doesn't make that much of a difference when they're this close.....Unless you're a gamer?
Other things to look at, that may make your decision.
Camera - OnePlus 3T wins
Audio - Axon 7 wins
How much space do you really need? My SD card died last week and I was all freaked out, but it all fit on my 64gb Axon 7 internal memory until my new card arrives.... If I had a bunch of movies to save, this would be a deal breaker. I even have 2100 songs and they only eat up about 7-8gb.
I'm an "audio" buff....So the choice was easy for me, and the camera is good enough on the Axon 7 that I can live with it and make it do what I need it to. Sometimes a little editing is needed.

Well this is my point of view, take it with a grain of salt.
ZTE:
- Better Screen (not reaaaaaally noticeable, yes it is better, but both are good enough so that you cant tell each other apart). Real difference might be appreciated with QHD wallpapers, but not much else.
- Better Speakers, and overall sound quality. This has to be the largest difference. Watching videos in the Axon vs the OP3 is like going from dial up to broadband. Plus, the Axon drives higher impedance headphones without much of a hassle.
- Better in call quality. This is a direct consequence of having better audio.
- SD Card Support. I thought I wouldn't need it too much but actually, it is a nice thing to have.
OP3:
- The fact that the screen itself is lower res, means lower battery consumption. Since I read an article from AnandTech, we might be talking maybe up to 30% less usage from the screen + cpu/gpu load.
- The camera has to be better, you don't have to work yourself out to get an awesome picture. Though, if you get it right on the ZTE you can absolutely get beautiful pictures.
- Better processor? Really? Lets suppose you actually need the difference in clocks, where the OP3 would make a difference, how long can you really keep that clock up? Maaaybe 5 minutes before hitting thermal limits where the better cpu just doesn't mean anything anymore.
- Physical button. Well this is really up to you, I prefer the fingerprint scanner on the back.
- Alert Slider. Really an advantage for the OP3, really like this feature, and if it ever becomes configurable, that would be awesome.
-6GB of RAM?? Well, I have 4GB on my Axon and never has an app crashed on me, and I was suprised to find myself having 20+ apps open without the phone even noticing and instantly switching between them with all of them loaded in RAM. So this one is up to you, but I wouldn't mind. It does make the OP3 more futureproof if anything...
- Software> the OP3s software is hands down better than the Axons and that is the best that the OP3 can pull over the Axon, by far.
About support, well I don't know how well any of them do with support so i will not comment on this.
My conclusion is then: should you care about media consumption, buy the Axon, don't even think about it. If what you want/need the best performance around and like having the best software and dev help, then get the OP3. I wouldn't look on hardware differences too much.

Axon 7 has Daydream support, also.

Now that Axon 7 is getting proper sound support on LOS/LOS based roms, it is Axon 7 hands down.

A7 has better cellular connectivity support. Has more bands than the OP3/T do.

How prevalent is this Google Play bug I am seeing on the Axon 7?

I've had three OP phones and never buying them again. All above aside, they have terrible touch screen lag which makes them unusable. Axon is also cheaper.

I have both...Also mate 9..Just bought each over this last month...I am coming from my still loved note 5..
First off...Don't think too much into 2k unless vr is your factor. I did too. But after experiencing these latest devices running 1080 with 5.5 inch to 5.9 I cannot believe I said all I did in the past...The one plus 3t is just as sharp for regular use and have not tried any VR on any device...The Axon 7 is great as well...Not as speedy as the latter but still a steal for the price...To be honest the one plus 3t and Axon 7 are both comparable however the camera is a bit better FOR ME so far on One plus but I have to say that 20mp isn't bad at all...The 1440 on the Axon isn't that noticable to me either. Really. The one plus screen looks slightly better to me I guess because of the brightness and calibration. Still miniscule ...Both perform crazy fast for their price but one plus and mate 9 are definitely smoother for me...Just flip a coin. You can't go wrong...I just could not make up my mind so I bought them all...If I have to sell one I will. But for now they are all nice and safe clean and ready for my reviews...Sort of babbling here really but if you have any specific questions I can totally help. I do not keep notifications on so I'll have to check for reply manually. I haven't been on in a year here ...But I'll be checking back for your comments. Or Inbox

I can say I was on the same boat as you in January, when I bought my first Axon 7 and I was amazed with the device. Even when I loved it, I decided to get a Mate 9 because I heard it was a great device. I used the Mate 9 for a couple of weeks and sold it and got the Axon 7 again, I couldn't stand the media consumption in the Mate 9, because of the screen and the sound. The Mate 9 has an amazing display, but I'm used to QHD since many years ago, and somehow I could notice the difference in certain situations. About the sound, Axon 7 is clearly the winner here. The reason I changed the Axon 7 was the camera, because was average and everybody claimed that Mate 9 had a super camera. Truth is, that I didn't see too much difference between the 2 in picture quality, so better go back with the Axon 7.
Regarding the comparison, 821 is less than 10% better than 820, so it makes no difference in real world usage. RAM neither, because most of the time I have 2GB free on the Axon 7, so why should I want 2GB more?, that is only pure marketing and never an app would require so much RAM.
In my opinion, the physical home button is a waste of space, because it only makes the device bigger with no need. I always have hated capacitive buttons, but what I love about the Axon 7 is that even with capacitive buttons, the aspect ratio is great. Is smaller than some of the 5.5" devices I have used before that rely only on software buttons.
The OP3T has a worse display, both resolution and quality, and the people who say that is because of the battery, is lying or they don't know much about technology. Display technology has advanced so much in these years, and even when this statement was true in the beginning, now the QHD screens out there have similar power consumptions. Also to point that the screen on the Axon 7 is exactly the same of the Galaxy S7 Edge, so I can say is really nice to have a display like this one.
As for the OP3T, is true that is has slightly better performance, camera and battery, but is no match for the Axon 7 regarding media consumption (sound, display, storage, etc.) and the difference is huge between the 2.
As someone suggested you, if you aim to media consumption, there is no better device than this one. If you are kind of a ROM addict or you are deep into development, get the OP3T.

P.D.: All the bugs and problems the Axon 7 (including Play Store) are fixed now with the update that came a few days ago, and I can confirm it.

If performance is your concern then look no further and buy the OP3, unless, since you are an XDA member, know a thing or two about tinkering with ROMs and flashing your phone. In that case then its an Audio vs Camera situation...

In had the oneplus 3 and returned it within 2days. Axon 7 has been the better phone for me.

It's really a matter of opinion. You won't find that much difference in the specs.
Battery - The charging speed is the same (see this), and this), battery is the same (slightly better on the a7). I use the phone a lot and I'm very happy with the battery capacity.
Screen is nearly the same (A7: 2K AMOLED, OP3: 1080p Super AMOLED).
Processor - You won't notice the difference. Seriously, the A7 has great speed.
Camera - The A7's camera is excellent in day light. Not in day light? Not so much. It's fine. But in day light you can take amazing pictures with it (which show great on the screen ). There are a bunch of camera samples online from each phone (and maybe even a camera comparison), so check that out.
You might also want to check some other stuff out like durability, speed, etc. In videos. But do keep in mind that in speeds as high as flagships phone you probably won't notice the difference.
RAM - The 4GB RAM on the A7 is enough for me. I don't see how anyone would need 6GM RAM on a smartphone. (I've also heard that OP3 doesn't use all it's RAM, I wonder if that's fixed already).
The fingerprint scanner on the back is surprisingly comfortable and it's really a matter of getting used to it. I got used to it very quickly and it's instinctive to me.
The stock ROM isn't that great but it could be replaced by unlocking the bootloader so I personally wouldn't take that into account here. Plus the A7 started getting a lot of attention from ROM makers and has LOS official support and other ROMs available.
Also the A7 is cheaper.
The audio is also excellent.
Design is also great, the phone is very pretty (suck it LG G6 )
I enjoy my phone greatly.

It looks like the stock ROM is probably better (built-in dark theme and accent color adjustment. Well executed)
Processor matters. Maybe not in speed but the additional features Qualcomm rolls up in the chipset can... as long as the manufacturer implements them.
For me, it came down to warranty and particularly the Dash charging is proprietary. I'd rather not buy up a bunch of chargers which charge fast only on their phones. Yes, Quick Charge 3.0 is proprietary to Qualcomm in the sense that USB-C PD is the real standard - but it's less proprietary.
My next phone must have the most standard charging available. I'm tired of this proprietary charging junk. Dicking with finding the right power adapter is annoying and just adds up in $30 and $40 costs if I want car adapters and additional AC adapters which support whatever standard.
Just think of the extra $60 you spent on extra Quick/Fast chargers for the office & car which will be obsolete on your next phone. Hidden costs are crap.

I have it on mine. Just pressed home button held it and there it is. 7.0 stock.

Thanks everyone - going to BestBuy tomorrow to get a feel for the ergonomics and then will buy from BH if it passes. Currently have VZW so I'll try to get it going and if not, off to ATT

Also worth noting that the Axon 7 can be had for almost 40% less than the equivalent 3T, which seems almost too good to pass up for an incremental upgrade.
Also, from what I understand, it only fully supports AT&T and T-Mobile in states so do beware.

With axon 7 getting proper sound on LOS and an SD card for me it's a no brainer....I like to take my movies with me when I travel so sticking everything on the 256gb SanDisk is awesome....I will never but a phone with no microSD...I don't even wanna count how many times I wiped internal storage when I was resetting for a new Roman install....Having my TWRP backups on external storage was literAlly a life saver for me personally

Hey friends in the sub $300 range!
I'm shopping around for a new device. Currently I'm using an Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5" -- it has served me well (very well) since November 2015. Unfortunately the battery seems to be failing, so it seems the time has come for me to replace my precious. I'm actually in the sub $250 range, trying VERY HARD to not go over (which is why I'm considering the Axon 7 Mini and not the full-featured Axon 7).
I've been looking at all different phones for a couple days now and I'm stuck. I'm really drawn toward the Axon 7 Mini but from the reviews I've been reading the word is that it's just not that great for a $299 phone. Is it great for a $199 phone? Should I pay the extra $50 and get the Honor 6X (which I'm shying away from because of its overall durability -- yes, yes, I know to put a screen protector and case on it but it's the what ifs that get me), or do you think I'll be satisfied with the Axon 7 Mini? Normally I wouldn't hesitate to get a phone like this because I'm no stranger to the world of root and custom ROMs, and I know the dev community is stellar in making a stuttery device smooth like butter, but I see there hasn't been much luck with this one. I feel like my Idol (and Galaxy SIII before it) have spoiled me. Both devices just WORKED. They do and did what I needed them to do with minimal fuss and absolutely no worry about installing a custom ROM. Is the 7 Mini one of those phones that you just keep saying to yourself "I know CM would vastly improve my experience with this phone"?
Or should I give up on both phones and hope my Idol lasts a bit longer to see if I can get a really fantastic deal on the full featured Axon 7?

Probably should clarify: I am not by any means a heavy user. I may have a couple apps open at the same time, but I'm not running demanding games or social media apps (unless you count Snapchat as demanding; the Idol cannot handle Snapchat for some reason and it drives me nuts).

It depends on what you are looking for. The main reason why the reviews have been complaining is the somewhat weak CPU.
As someone who does not play 3D games on a phone, the performance has been absolutely fine for me.
Just going by the rest of the specs, it is hard to find anything that compares (without heavy compromises) at a $199 price point.

Hard to tell for me honestly. Just comparing the specs, the Axon has an AMOLED screen and better sound, while the Honor should have better battery life.
I'd go by what features you prefer. (more on that further down)

Vastly improved? Not really. Somewhat improved? Definitely yes.
The stock system is not bad, but it has some quirks going against it. (somewhat questionable power management, bad stock UI)
If the Android N update goes well, I don't see that much need for a custom rom. It would of course be great to have, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
Overall pros/cons:
pro:
- beautiful display
- outstanding sound (both speakers and headphones)
- quick charge works very well
subjective pros:
- metal case
- usb type c
- overall great hardware design
meh:
- mediocre battery life (will get you through the day just fine, don't expect anything beyond)
- mediocre performance (will perform everyday tasks just fine, you won't be happy if you want to play demanding games though)
- mediocre camera (I don't really use it, but the pictures are unimpressive)
- updates happen every once in a blue moon, but they do happen
cons:
- no root
- no custom roms
- battery can't be swapped
- bad default UI (just using a different launcher will vastly improve your experience with the phone)

Check these links, nubia 17, better photography (although dslr is the queen) idk yet about the audio chip, will share it if you like. Although on 28nm, 652/653 is a nice improvement!

I came to the mini 7 from a broken Galaxy S6 ($300 to repair it so I figured I'd look at a newer phone). Now that I've got the performance improved (via a soft reset), I'm generally happy with the phone. Admittedly, my S6 was starting to get slow too, it probably also need a reset or cache cleared.
I bought the mini for $199. I think for that price it's a pretty decent phone.

The Mini is easy to get for $199, most Best Buy stores stock both colors for that price (they are quite plentiful in the Minneapolis area at least)... For $199 if you don't need Verizon or other CDMA support, it's a pretty solid device.
- The display is beautiful and the sound is something you don't expect for a phone under $500.
- Performance is good for everything but heavy gaming.
- Battery is decent, pretty easy to get a full day with 4.5-5 hours SOT average in mixed LTE/WiFi
- Camera is pretty good and quick, I'll take it over my Moto X Pure edition's 21MP camera any day
- It is a very "premium" feeling phone
- The fingerprint reader is sometimes questionable (my son quite using it because it was so inconsistent, but last few updates it's better)
- MiFavor, the UI, is really disappointing and tries to be too Applish with no app drawer. And there is no usable battery stats in settings?!?!
The custom ROM and root thing is less and less important all the time, personally I don't think it will effect my next decision to get a phone at all. I'm with the previous poster CM might make it a little better, but the stock ROM isn't bad all and it wouldn't make it "amazing" or anything like that.
Add Nova Launcher and GSAM as your first installed apps and it's a good buy at $199, but if it's at $250-$300 I would skip it and get a Moto G5 Plus.
As far as the Honor phones go, I can't stand EMUI... the software ruins what would be an otherwise decent phone. Honor devices are solid hardware, but the software ruins it especially it actively prevents you replacing the launcher or using some other customizations, it's unfortunate they didn't stay with a more simple UI or even stockish Android, they would be a real consideration then.

Just wanted to say that with EMUi 5.0, their skin has gotten a lot better. And the Honor 6X is getting it in Q2 this year. Also they don't make it difficult to replace the launcher or anything like that. Got an Honor phone for my Mom and girlfriend and I easily got them on Nova Launcher, Android Messages, Gmail, and even the Google phone app (an older version).
In regards to OP, the Honor 6X does seem like an all around better phone, if you can stand their skin. The performance seems to be better (going by reviews), battery life seems to be better, screen quality seems to be similar. I know the Axon is AMOLED and the Honor is IPS LCD, but all of the reviews (and my in person opinion) state that it is a very capable screen, especially for the price. The Axon does have great audio quality, but the Honor seems to have better performance and battery life. The design of the two is quite similar in that it's mostly aluminum with some glass. Also the Honor is currently on a flash sale for the next few days at $220 on Honor's website. So I definitely think it's up to you, but there's another opinion for ya!

Honor 8 Deserves More Love

When the Honor 8 was announced last summer, I completely overlooked it because so many tech sites and reviewers declared it to be an "also ran" in the $400 flagship category. Many would compare it to the One Plus 3 and Axon 7 and conclude that both were a better buy. Don't get me wrong, both of those phones are nice, but the Honor 8 is smaller, easier to hold, (and arguably better looking) than both of those devices. It simply punches above its weight class and needs to be recognized as the over-achiever that it really is.
Especially after the OP3T ($439) was released, far too often, tech sites claimed it to be THE BEST VALUE IN ANDROID, saying that it was smoother, faster, and cheaper than the rest. It's almost as if they completely forgot about or didn't consider the Honor 8. Once again, the OP3T is a great phone, but it's not such a clear winner in terms of value at that price.
The Honor 8's Kirin 950 is stupid fast and very energy efficient. The dual cameras produce superior images to both the OP3T & Axon 7, and it's fingerprint sensor is probably the most feature packed and versatile of the three devices. Basically, when you ignore specs on paper and focus on the real world usage, the Honor 8 deserves way more love than it's been getting. Plus, it can be had for as low as $250 these days which is a STEAL for this level of performance and quality.
It wasn't until I did my own research and tried the device in person that I finally reached this conclusion. Why weren't the other tech sites and reviewers able to do the same?

Totally agree. For it's price it's probably the best you can get for your money in 5.2" screen category.
I would argue that it even bests newer offering from huawei (p10 lite).

Having had my Honor 8 since December 2016 and running dual sim plus a micro SD card this phone does the job very well for my needs. Battery life in real usage easily get (Twin App Whatsapp) Instagram, web browsing and calls on both lines and on 4G Data gets me through the day no problem with room to spare.
Yes it's a well balanced phone in looks and functionality and there are a couple of things I dislike but that's like any device or brand.
Having been a hard core Samsung Android User The Honor 8 is well over looked by many.. All my other android devices all been rooted by myself but the Honour 8 I have kept original apart from the firmware updated B380.. Some say this phone is heavy compared to Samsung S5, S7, but at time I panic thinking I've misplaced my device but yet it's in my pocket.. Excellent phone and from a flat battery to full charger under an hour that good for me..

Personally, I'm sick of always reading rants whenever I enter this forum. It's nice to see someone focusing less on getting the newest firmware and on how their 100% awesome battery life dropped to only 80% awesome after update.
It's a great device and considering that I bought it for a song I can't complain. I'm heavily satisfied!

I am glad that someone made a positive review about the Honor 8. Personally if people would just let the phone be and stop going root/beta testing crazy with this phone then they would have less problems. I have been a Honor 8 owner for about 6 months now and I do not have any problems with it. In addition it have the best camera out there by far from the mid range phones category!

The one video that finally convinced me to get the H8 was a performance comparison to the S7 or/and the iphone 6/7, cant actually remember. But it was actual use not the retarded Benchmarks.
And in that category, at the time of release it blew everything else out of the water and it did not disappoint so far.
Although no one around here really complained about that as far as I know. Its the software, it always has been.
Thanks to Huawei Ive been stuck on their EMUI for about a year, and as much as I can say that in some respects it did very well, i never wanted it and never asked for it in the first place.
And as good as the Hardware can be the software is what I am going to use and this will definetly be my last Huawei device until they change that software policy.
Regardless, the hardware is top notch, especially for the low price ( and i paid 350€, and that still applies at that price )

Tech sites slammed it because of EMUI, which was extremely shortsighted. I've said many times in here, I've been using CyanogenMod since Android 2.2, I've owned Nexuses, and even still I'm completely okay with EMUI.
There is no better price/performance device out there right now. And the camera blows away other value flagships.

True, I'll admit that in the brief time I used UMUI 4, I found myself looking for ways to add features that it was missing. But I only had it for a day before updating to EMUI 5 and it along with Nougat seemed to solve almost every complaint I had. It's amazing how much a difference it made, so I guess I can understand​ how the reviews seemed a little unimpressed.

Got the phone yesterday and what can I say, it's an amazing phone.
Great to hold, the screen is world class, the camera's are fast and produce quality photo's even in low light.
The speed is amazing.
As for updates, it's had one already.
Highly recommended.

I've had the update just show up now - im installing it as we speak.

Google Photos and Google Play Music.. Photos wants to upload everything to cloud, you can say no or just upload it if you are ok with cloud. Haven't checked if you get unlimited Google Photos space with this like you get with Nexus. Google Play Music will automatically add stuff you put into Music folder in the phone. Tested with few .flac files and they automatically appeared in Play Music.

One thing worried me from the reviews and that was the accuracy and speed of the fingerprint sensor which was supposed to be poor. Coming from an HTC 10 with an excellent sensor I was concerned. I've been glad to find the review opinions is absolute hogwash. The Nokia sensor is every bit as accurate and fast as you'd expect it to be in a flagship.

Really want to get the Nokia 8, can someone coming from the Galaxy S6 tell me two things
1. How does the camera compare to the S6
2. In the Galaxy s6 there is a private mode where some notes and pictures are hidden from view. Is there a similar facility in the Nokia 8, not interested in a different app for this.

I have both HTC10 and N8 and fingerprint sensor on HTC is a bit faster and snapier.
As for my personal opinion about N8:
Superb build quality and overall specs. Camera is a bit dated but we will see what will upcoming updates bring. Pure android experience after coming from device like HTC M7, 10 is really meeeh. Lack of configuration, stock apps are just really simple. No weather app preinstalled. Google calendar is a complete **** as far as UI goes comparing to aftermarket solutions. Stock google dialer and contacts are also unimpressive.
Stock N8 launcher is also meh so I bought Nova couple of minutes after playing with the phone.
Hidden option to show percentage batter is a joke, you need to have magnifying glass to see the values *inside* the battery icon, lol.
So far the biggest drawback is lack of screen color calibration and night mode. This should be included in any moder phone. N8 screen should be a little warmer.
Overall I am really happy with this phone and my family member is happy even more. She can get used to all things that I consider drawbacks. If it would not be for a lack of out of the box config options I would actualy rate N8 higher that my beloved HTC10 which I consider one of the best devices ever made for my personal preferences like build quality, finger sensor on the front and hardware buttons below the screen.

I'm the opposite I prefer the pure experience. On both HTC one and 10 I ran stockish custom ROMs to keep os up to date because let's face HTC didn't. That's my hope for Nokia that maybe just maybe I won't need to do that.

I never bothered with updating every month since I was and still am running custom roms on my HTC10 and previous devices so I just wait patiently for new update and switch every 2-3 update. I think if I would run stock, for me it would be enough to have only one update before switching to new Android version. I really do not care about the monthly security updates just because I am ignorant and do not feel compromised. Having phone memory and storage encrypted + password locked device on boot and lockscreen is enough security. So I do not bash HTC for being slow and lazy with updates.
But I completely understand people, who would want to have updates as often as possible and that is why Nokia is a better choice. It is faster to update stock android rather than branded one like with HTC and optional carrier branding.

In my opinion HTC needed to commit to the monthly updates. For me being stuck on June update in November on last year's flagship was the last straw. Too many major security flaws in that period being left unpatched. HTC themselves made a point of being near stock for fast updates then failed to deliver. Google will eventually take over fully.

I've had the phone for 2 days. My first powerful Android phone, upgrading from BB bold 9000. So I might be biased. The overall experience is good.

So in the UK the Nokia 8 was £400, absolute bargain for a phone with THAT processor and THAT screen. But Nokia was still an unknown quantity with android. In the end I decided to buy the Nokia 8 with a 14 day exchange policy. It was too good of a price to pass over and I ain't letting Samsung and iPhone rob me for £600 plus.
The best thing is the pure stock android and overall performance it really is as fast as any android phone except the Pixel 2. Battery was good enough; you have to consider that there's that 2k screen. The 2k screen looks great for an LCD although there's really no need for 2k if it's at the expense of battery life. But yeah the pros of this phone are definitely the screen quality and performance.
On to the bad stuff. First thing I didn't like are the dimensions of the phone; I've used bigger phones but this doesn't feel right in the hand, too wide for the height imo. Next thing is the camera, I don't care for the extra stuff I just want a good point and shoot camera; this phone sucks in that regard. Really slow and really underwhelming quality considering how it was marketed. Next, the fingerprint sensor. It's just too small and it led to it misreading enough to become frustrating. Even when it reads my fingerprint it unlocks much slower than the competition. This the deal breaker for me. The quick glance screen was very basic, only showed text and call notifications no WhatsApp notifications I dunno it just annoyed me.
In the end I returned the phone and paid 100 extra to get the Pixel 2, absolutely outstanding phone but that's for another review.
To conclude the Nokia 8 is a very underrated phone and provides great value for money. But I wanted a phone that I can use for the next 2-3 years without frustration and Nokia just didn't do it for me.

I've had loads of misreading issues on 8.0.
8.1 fixed it.
Also, as you saying. Fingerprint sensor is twice faster on 8.1 beta.

Great great phone. And yes you can tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p. Even at a distance. Try changing the resolution to 1080p in adb using same way with xz premium to 4k, you will notice the fuzz from 1080p to 1440p

its a great phone when it was locked and without root, now that mine is rooted, lets see what it can do !

The fact you can get this now from carphone warehouse here in the UK for £300, like I did on Monday, is unbelievable. The absolutely blows anything else for that price and up to the OnePlus 5 out of the water. I haven't been this happy with a device in a long time and in 2017 I had a lot of devices. It's only £70 more than the Moto G5s plus. There's no contest.
