You could, but do you want to be that person that complains about a scratch on their unprotected phone? Unless you had it in some kind of a case of course
I have read about other people also having scratches but it not affecting the pictures/videos being taken. Do you also get similar results?
Why would you raise hell at Best Buy to get a replacement due to damage that you caused? Even if you didn't directly cause it, scratches are normal wear and tear, and are not covered under warranty.
That being said, I ran over my EVO with my car, smashed it to bits, thinking about going to my Sprint Corporate rep and raising hell for a replacement. LOL, I kid... I kid!

The lens on mine somehow cracked in the first week and I had no idea how it happened. I was able to get a replacement directly from htc.

unless you see it when youre taking a picture, it shouldnt affect it. the lens is too close to the glass to have it show up, unless it refracts light into the lens.
the lens cant focus for that short of a distance.
if you can get it replaced, do it, but i dont think it should be too serious.
i would try and get a replacement...
Mine has a tiny scratch too. When I bought a case I made sure to get one that would keep the lens off the table when I lay it down.
The good news is it shouldn't be an issue for your pictures. I'm a photography nerd and there are is a fair bit of information on the web supporting this if you care to look it up, but it would take a very significant scratch to cause any change to your pictures.
There are some variables that determine if something will show up or not, but I have seen an extreme example of someone rubber banding a pencil across the front of an SLR camera lens, and you could still see the entire image, it was just a little darker. Light bends.

My phone seems to be manifesting these bright pixels/spots on LCD as you can see in the picture.
I am suspecting it is from applying pressure on the screen but I do take care of it so I don't see why this has happened.
You can see these pixels clearly under bright/white colors/backgrounds, under dark colors you can barely see it.
I wonder if HTC will cover this under my regular warranty or will they charge me for a new screen. I had bad experience with them before and they tend to blame you at any occasion to save their costs.
quite a common problem if ya look around the forum, I sent mine back, they had it 6 weeks, then gave me a quote of nearly 200 quid to fix it....was my fault,they said it was from over heating, which I know is bull****.. their service is the worst ever sadly, so I got it back and lived with it.
I disassembled my display with the same trouble, there is a thin reflective film (aluminium coated) which have clear points, maybe corrozion caused by humidity. That points let more light to pass through LCD and looks like light spots or even lines in my case. You have to change LCD only if touch works properly.

Thanks for your advice but I am not opening my device as long as it has warranty.
The only thing I want to know is if anyone knows 100% if this is covered under warranty.
Paying 40 Euros to have someone tell me it's not covered under warranty is a waste of money for few faulty pixels.
I would only do it if it really starts to annoy me.
I am hoping it is covered under warranty and I hate to hear from HTC blaming me everytime i send a device their way.
I'm doubt this defect is covered by warranty, probabily not.

Thanks for the link. From what I read I think I have white spots on the display. Now to find out if HTC would fix it under warranty that seems to be a grey area.
I wish to hear more of people who have my problem and perhaps they can post some pics of their screens so we can compare and pinpoint what the cause of this.
If it is due to pressure, I cannot understand how this has happened as I have not used any abnormal pressure other than pressing on the touchscreen mildly for it to cause this.
On my HD2 display similar light lines and spots appeared due to tiny skratches on lightspreader film (a thin film specially designed to uniformly scatter light from backlight LEDs on the whole display surface). It's my bad, this lightspreader is made from very soft plastic and I scratched it with my fingers when took it out ;( but the screen was already pretty damaged, so it's not too big deal to me.

as pvii said, they are related to the polarizing foils used to disperse the backlight and redirect the light to a specific angle when passing through the tft matrix.
I've seen these things come out from nowhere (don't know why...?!?) but except these situations, most of them come via a mechanic shock, too much pressure on the screen or something stuck between these foils (dirt for example).
I'm sorry but as i said, there isn't any practical solution to this problem and i really don't recommend a lcm module disassembly.

I have seen post of anywhere from around $85 USD to $120 USD depending on who you get to do it, HTC $100 USD to $120 USD
Beware: the camera lens on the back of our SGS II is made of cheap plastic. I learned the hard way.
Yesterday I was using the camera and all was really good. Today all photos were blurred. I checked and noticed a small bend, yes a bend, right in the middle of the camera lens. It is not a scratch, which has been my concern since buying the SGS2, it was a bend. I may be wrong, but glass should not bend, it scratches. Now I don't have a lens anymore, I have a prism.
The phone did not fall, or was treated badly. Most probably, I put it in my pants' front pockets, as I have done for years with my HTC phones (horrible cameras btw, compared to the sgs2), there may have been a contact with a harder surface (a key, maybe, but I don't suppose so), and the lens bended. It's a real pity. I'm considering now removing the "lens" as it is not the actual lens, just a cover I guess, and see if this works.
This may be the best and most expensive cell phone right now, why couldn't Samsung put a real glass (like apple does, btw) to protect the camera?
I hope this warning helps others not to get into the same problem. Maybe using a leather pouch can prevent this from happening (I was using the mesh cover case).
A previously super happy owner, now a very desolate one...

can you post pictures taken and a picture of the lens?
I don't have another camera with me to photograph the lens. Besides, it is hard to see the bend, you need the correct angle for the light to hit it and be able to see. But attached is a picture I took with the cell. Kind of artsy...
I would have thought that if it did actually have a bend in it (which seems like an awfully difficult thing to have done), that it would cause a distortion and not just producing a blurry pic like that.
Looks more like something has been smeared across the lens cover.
It's not the lens that bended, it's the protective screen on top of the lense. Looks like glass to me, but it's possible to be plastic. Any way, i doubt it could bend unless you put a lot of pressure on it.
As I said, it was in the front pocket of a not so tight pants, so there might be little pressure, normal pressure as every cell phone suffers in this situation, but nothing exceptional, not much. Nobody sat on my lap as well... That would be a worthy reason at least.

My point in posting is that it happened. Just trying let others know to not make the same mistake. It is not as solid a construction as, say, the HTC HD2. It needs more care.

PS: And no heat also, not a teenager anymore to have so much heat near the crotch area...
PPS: Yes, it is the protective screen. My hope is I can get rid of it, and have my camera back. Unprotected, but taking photos, with lots of care from now on...
OP, stupid question: that lens glass out of the box was protected with a transparent plastic film I think, just like the screen. Did you remove it?
Can you make a shot of the lens using a bathroom mirror perhaps, in macro mode?

I agree with your here. The way Samsung designed the back of the phone makes it very easy to scratch/ even bend (like it happened to you) the protective screen. I had a HTC Touch HD before and the back of the camera could never touch the surface where the phone was put. With Samsung if you put your phone on a rugged area you might end up damaging the protective screen easily.
Have you been using the LED as a torch or anything like that? Perhaps the heat could have warped the plastic?

Sure, I took the plastic out. I saw no point in having a very good phone camera weakened by the plastic.
I tried to take the photo you asked, but was not successful. But as I said it was a very small bend, which makes the light enter the lens like a prism. Very difficult to photograph with a normal camera.
Actually, there was a power outage in the area I'm in now, but I don't recollect to use torch that much... I remember I used it for a while, the used some screen light, then on to Kindle. Id on't suppose it was torch, but could it really be so silly like this?!

Wow, I just tried pushing on mine with my nail, it moves a teeny tiny bit, but it springs right back up Maybe something in your pocket just happened to touch the middle of that little piece of plastic, and just managed to apply enough force to bend it beyond the recovery point, so your plastic piece did not spring back up.
I fully understand what you mean now. But not sure what your options are. It is clearly a physical damage. I would not advise trying to take that piece out and bend it straight, you will mess up the actual lens.

they wont know if you dont tell them plus they wont inspect the phone in that detail closely at the camera, worth a try. IF you bough it from a store, bring it back there and get a replacement.

I would try to replace it if I had bought it in my country. I bought it through a friend from Xpansys US (a UK phone), and I'm now in Brazil. I guess I would have so many troubles with customs here to send it out and back with no guarantee to have it replaced...
My idea is not to take the plastic out, and try to fix it. It is to just take out. I will have a hole there, but there will be nothing distorting light that comes into the lens. I will have to be extra careful, but considering how easy the plastic which was supposed to protect the camera was damaged, extra care is the name of this phone for me.
And I'm not complaining about SGS2's plastic finish as opposed to the metal/glass ones of iPhone or HTC. I actually like this, including the back cover. After you get used to it, it is kind of cool. And it is light. I just wished there was a cover or that Samsung used a hard glass on the camera, or perhaps that the plastic was so tiny and receeded that nothing could reach it. I always like the way Sony and Nokia used to put a sliding cover over the camera lens in their phones. With such a thin phone as ours, I wouldn't mind the extra thickness. Or like my HTC Kaiser, where the plastic was actually on the cover. If it was scratched or broken you could replace the back cover... Sorry, just venting my frustration.
Don't leave that hole uncovered. Your lens will get dirty in no time. Pocket lint , dust and dirt will accumulate in there and break the lens autofocus mechanism. Just don't even think about leaving that hole uncovered.
Thought id post here about my Xperia Z3 and how things went from great to worse. Bought the phone last November here in Finland and was a happy little peasant with a brand new phone. Loved the phone but quite early on I think i managed to break the back glass myself (?). I didn't drop it, it just cracked... The phone was denied warranty back then due to mechanical preassure (saying it's my own fault it cracked). Well that was no biggie as it was just the back cover and it didn't make hte usability of the phone any worse than it was. And it may as well be that I've broken it myself, not being carefull enough. Picture #1, #2, #3. Sorry for the poor quality, but as you can see there's no damage on the sides indicating it being dropped, but still it could be my own fault.
Fast forward half a year and I noticed that my phone had a yellow tint on it's display right next to the micro-usb port. I took the phone for warranty and waited a few weeks. The local service company denied warranty due to improper use of the device quoting the phone being bent, cracked rear cover and the LCD screen glue being broken. I was really surprised and I hadn't noticed the bending or the glueing being an issue. Received the pictures and it indeed was bent and the lcd screen glue was torn. Still, the phone wasn't mishandled in any way, well it did drop a few times but nothing major.

Well there's no denying those pictures. To be honest, I would have expected the phone to not bend (keep it in my front pocket) and havn't taken the phone with me to sports or anything like that. So my phone was denied warranty as all damage to the phone was not due to poor build quality but to improper usage of the device. Took the phone to my local reseller where I bought the phone for consumer complaint as I couldn't have in any way be held accountable for the LCD screen defect or the poor glue. Bending ok, mayby... but still think this is a little bit far fetched and the rear cover i can definately be held accountable for. But the screen? Really? The service center said that the phone would need to be replaced completely. Sony official response was that it's not due to build quality issues but to damage caused by improper use of the device. They stood behind the service center and device is officially out of warranty now.
Well I did order spare parts and replace the LCD screen glue myself, and the back cover was held tight but the LCD screen wasn't. I managed to almost pull out the complete screen without heating it up first. As a result the glue came off in a wierd way as seen in the picture here. I really doubt the way the screen was glued could be my fault and has to be an manufacturing error.
Anyway, this is my story with my Xperia Z3 phone. Now i'm stuck with a faulty LCD screen that has burnt yellow tint close to the micro-usb port and it's a really ****ty way to keep the phone for another 12 months or so untill it's paid off (24months payment). TL: DR: Phone denied warranty (yellow tint on LCD, LCD gluing broken, bent phone and cracked rear glass. Last two might be my fault, but the first two couldn't be. Warranty service and Sony claim i've caused all damange to phone. Can't say i agree
they are right... NO ONE would approve warranty when there is physical damage....
They always have to prove that the defect you want them to repair was caused by you. So physical damage is not always enough for them to reject a warranty repair.
In this case, however, I can easily imagine both defects being caused by you bending the phone, so I'm not that surprised they denied your claim...
Whatever. I spent ~$160 fixing my phone. Both sides glass broken and phone unusable. Under std warranty (bought through expansys-usa.com) sent to sony/texas, waited about 3 weeks (forever) and rcvd a brand new phone back. Back is once again cracked. I will say this. Unless a proper case comes out, I won't be buying any more sonys. The best hard case now is the lovemei ($35) imo. Carrying case? Maxpedition TC-2. With a lovemei case get a TC-3.
I have the Z3 since it came out, bought it right at release. Only use a soft case, always have it in my front pocket. It's with me when I ride my bike and I took pictures of the kids in the water. So far no issues, except two bright spots in the lower part of the screen. So far I've been too lazy to get it repaired/exchanged.
Same for me too. 5 months old and its the 3rd time I sent it to Sony because of warranty.
Screen cracked for no reason.
The reasons before were Bluetooth not working and battery dieing.
Definitely my last Sony.

Screen cracked for no reason, strange...maybe it is not cracked at all...maybe you have some sort of hallucination when you look at it, and it happens only to you and only when you look at it...

No front or back cracks or damage for me yet. I got mine back in March and installed tempered glass on the front which I broke the other day. The only issue I have is yellowing around the soft keys caused by me I think. Front pocket and I basically do parkour at work as a residential window cleaner I jump a lot of gates and fences everyday. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised the phone is still in 100% condition on the outside. [emoji12]

The point was that they pinned all of the damage on me and claimed I was responsible for the poor glue used with the LCD screen and the screen errors as well while I could in no way have done that damage by using the device. And I really doubt a cracked back cover and the slight bending could cause either of the problems with the screen. The idea was to share how it went down and perhaps to be of use to someone. Seems though it won’t be so let this post be buried.
Sure I’m a little bit surprised a device could even bend and thought it was just something that would happen if deliberately done. Never had that with any previous phone from any manufacturer. I will buy smaller phones next time or sturdier ones so I can keep them with me. Not saying it’s a common problem as it surely isn’t, just going to make different desisions in the future.

why should they replace something you broke? crash a car a week after buying and see if the car salesman will replace it for you?
the is insurance for a reason, maybe you google the difference between warranty and insurance.

i think its a great phone. fast, great design although i do have 1 complaint, it is a very slippy phone

The reason for you not being able to open the back cover is that you're not supposed
to open the cover on this waterproof phone...
Next time you buy a phone, google for "Rugged" and do some research.

If it cracks you need to remove it which is 'glued on' and the glass will make your fingers bleed when it cracks.
All this "DRM key" fuss... and low light this cam is seriously rubbish.
I have had really a lot of Sony products and the quality was always very convincing but this "Sony-Ericsson" (yes it's still ericsson as sony bought that part and then named it both sony) is just very disappointing, not even mid-quality.
So now my device is a cracked back (already the second device the first got replaced by warranty) and a permanent yellow tint on the left half of the screen which i can be happy about the premiumness for the next few years, as i don't have cash for another phone.
And when I sent it to service for replacement "oops we won't pay this, this is your demage" I had this device just around 3 months an the other which got replaced didn't also last longer than ca. 3 months. What a joke!
Just for comparing, I've had a S4 mini Samsung for one year and it even fell on the pavement and nothing happened. The screen ain't got any scratch and I even sold it again for a decent price.

So let's put it in clear way, you are a lamer, who broke it's phone and blames manufacturer.
There are things to be said. First of all, the quality of the phone is excellent, compared to other "premium" mobiles like Samsung or LG. The reason why the back cover is glued, is that the phone is sold as waterproof. Service professionals, and people who know what they are doing, have proper knowledge (!) and tools to open it.
My Z3 got yellowish area on right side of the phone around Power button after 1 year of use. I admit I dropped it couple of times, but I use wireless charging case which provides excellent protection against scratches. Display, touchscreen, glass, sides and speakers were exchanged by my provider (1&1) free of charge. Later on I discovered that using flash causes green halo effect on pictures, probably camera lenses got misaligned during repair. Again, the camera part was exchanged free of charge.
The mobile phone, specially with glass front and back, is a precise and delicate device. And you knew it before you bought it. So blaming Sony for your own disability is not fair.
